My latest for @readsludge: Tulsi Gabbard took thousands from leaders of the Hindu American Foundation, a group with ties to India’s right wing Hindu nationalist movement https://readsludge.com/2018/12/26/tulsi-gabbard-took-thousands-from-members-of-right-wing-hindu-group/
🤔

> Involuntary manslaughter: a killing that stems from a lack of intention to cause death but involving an intentional, or negligent, act leading to death
Seems to fit the actions of the police in this case, just saying...
I mean I'm preaching to the choir here with that

Not really, this would be negligence at most.
And like mentioned before, the police do not have a duty of care to individuals.

@Yuuki Negligence is one of the reasons listed

@Wipqozn Yes, but involuntary manslaughter is typically a charge leveled at the individuals directly responsible for the death, like a person driving a car while intoxicated.
The proximate cause, so to speak.
Or at least, that's my understanding of involuntary manslaughter.

@Yuuki I suppose "Directly" is a key part here, then

> Qualified immunity: a legal doctrine in United States federal law that shields government officials from being sued for discretionary actions performed within their official capacity, unless their actions violated "clearly established" federal law or constitutional rights.

@Unionhawk wooooooooooooo

@GodEmperorDune On the one hand, those growth rates on China are ridiculous. On the other hand, China was dirt-poor in the 70s.

(though I'm not sure they have qualified immunity, the standard is more like "does a reasonable officer believe they acted reasonably if they were in that exact situation")
(which always ends in "you can't prove he wasn't scared")
"clearly established" is always fun, especially here, since it basically gives the government a mulligan

DC federal judge refuses @TheJusticeDept's request to pause deadlines in suit challenging Trump's asylum rules. Order cites DOJ stats on non-furloughed employees:

5:12 PM
Ohio house has performed a veto override on heartbeat, now moving to senate
Ohio is soon to become a forced birth state

5:52 PM
Actually wait it looks like the veto survived
Yeah ok, overridden in house, failed in senate

Imagine passing your super restrictive law by putting up an even more extreme version to move the window and then being dissatisfied you merely got away with that con

@GodEmperorDune What does this mean

@Ash My understanding is that the Court imposed deadlines on the DOJ to produce certain briefings. The DOJ attempted to delay/pause these deadlines, citing the government shutdown. The Court notes that the DOJ's Office for Immigration Review has 48% of its employees exempted from the shutdown as well as 91% of CBP and 81% of ICE.
And therefore, due to these numbers, cannot be reasonably hampered by the shutdown.
Correction, this is with regards to a current suit on Trump's asylum rule changes.

Yep

@Yuuki this is my understanding as well

your periodic reminder that populism isn’t an ideology and means nothing in a vacuum

@Unionhawk Sometimes I hear "populism" and sometimes I hear "botulism".
