My city is working on creating safe injection site stuff

user15026
So far, with surprisingly little pushback

@GodEmperorDune the thing that makes the least sense about this
is like
so you don't want a shelter
so they'll be out on the street panhandling 24/7 instead
and that's somehow getting the homeless further away from you rather than even more in your face because they have no other options
???

@Ash We won an exchange as a "mobile" (a van parked at a hospital) unit, parked at a hospital far from the center of town (bus service every 90 minutes or so), and also it's a Catholic hospital so yeeeah
It's very much not as good as it could have been (fixed at the department of health very much in the middle of town)
But it's something

@quartata they want the homeless to panhandle far away from them

yeah the homeless are not going to panhandle where there are no people
sorry that's not how like
life
works
also can I just say
laguna niguel is astoundingly white

12:05 AM
Gotta keep property values up

it's really not a coincidence I'm sorry

the whole OC is a privileged mess

laguna niguel is particularly egregious imo

i want to say they got busted for bussing their homeless people up to LA's skid row years back

disgusting:
"They need to put them somewhere, maybe somewhere else in California," said [Angela Liu of Irvine], who owns a legal services company. "I really don't know where they can go. But Irvine is beautiful and we don't want it to get destroyed."

12:10 AM
@quartata yep

let's just ship them off to a big ass concentration camp in riverside

angela liu can go in the sea

I mean that's literally the way they're talking
"what if we take the homeless"
"and push them somewhere else"

@Unionhawk Oh wow look it's Rohrabacher being terrible for reasons that don't have to do with Eastern Europeans

NYPD cop rapes a teenager that is under arrest. Now, turns out he’s having sex with the prosecutor who is supposed to be holding him accountable for his crime. The justice system in New York is corrupt from the ground up! https://nyp.st/2Inr72t

Mexico formally asks Trump to clarify announcement on sending military to southern border http://hill.cm/qyENi2H
JUST IN: White House: Trump would send National Guard to Mexico border until his wall is built http://hill.cm/9dLZBLW
correct me if i'm wrong but the National Guard is still the military isn't it?
i suppose that is still a clarification

1:45 AM
@GodEmperorDune this was deleted?

@quartata still there for me

oh, maybe he just linked the wrong article or something because he reposted it
@GodEmperorDune must be cached, that link 404s for me
this one works

Shaun King and his PAC does good work
Currently endorsing Sacramento county sheriff's opponent and whatnot

When Lindsay Shepherd invited Faith Goldy to speak at Laurier it was all "oh she's not like a white supremacist or anything" but like wtf is this shit: pressprogress.ca/…

🤔
It's just science, if you call yourself a leftist, that means you can't be racist

user15026
2:06 AM
But she said goodbye to the left

@Unionhawk oh they call the left racist all the time
I mean, it's code-word for "racist towards white people" I presume

2:20 AM
@quartata lol yeah
Well
It depends

oh yeah, sometimes it can also be something like "you're coddling other races by giving them so many rights, they don't need you"
that's a particularly lol one

It's a combination of "the left is doing white genocide", which is true, and the idea that economic issues and racial issues are completely separate, which is false
That isn't to say some morons claiming to be socialists are not bad, however

@Unionhawk er are you sure you have your first one right
I don't think you mean it in the way they usually mean it

That was sarcastic but it's still a funny claim to me
Because it's just 14 words shit

no sarcasm allowed on the internet, i don't make the rules

Nooooo my work accountants strike again
God they suck

are they gonna repossess the geth pulse rifle
on a serious note -- how have they managed to screw this up twice?
i thought they had it figured out now

I have now "made" an additional four figure number to compensate for the company paying taxes for me basically for free which I noted three years ago and they said was totally expected at the time because they are, in fact, quite dumb

is this in addition to what they already screwed up

2:36 AM
Yeah it's a whole separate issue
I'm sure Monday when I go to H&R Block will be a fun day

Idaho GOP candidate suggests women who have abortions should get death penalty http://hill.cm/m1v0TK4
bet you the people who think this never consider a woman not wanting a child who was conceived though rape or think about adding murder charges to rape in those situations

3:44 AM
A woman said an http://Ancestry.com DNA test told her she had a different father — her parents' fertility doctor. Now she's suing that doctor for fraud and medical negligence. https://trib.in/2GP1hHL

I'm sorry, what?

> The couple requested a donor who was in college and taller than 6 feet with brown hair and blue eyes - and Mortimer told them that he had found a donor matching their description, the suit says.
but did the doctor match these?

4:09 AM
In a county shaken by Scott Walker’s fiscally-, environmentally- and developmentally-dysfunctional Foxconn deal (Racine), the historic township of Yorkville votes (very) overwhelmingly to become a village so that it can prevent encroachments on its territory.
lol

4:30 AM
@TimStone so.......why does a being a village stop this? as opposed to apparently whatever it was before

4:41 AM
@Memor-X villages/towns/etc usually have authority over the land within their borders
> According to information provided by the Town of Yorkville, incorporation will give it governmental autonomy over planning and zoning and enable it to utilize economic development tools like tax increment financing. Incorporation would also protect Yorkville’s borders from annexation by adjacent communities.

Under state law, cities and villages have more statutory power than towns, including the authority to annex land from towns.

Yorkville will need to have an election this summer to vote for a village board, to replace its existing Town Board.
it doesn't stop the thing from happening, but it reduces some of the damage

@GodEmperorDune announces steel tariffs affecting everyone and causes people to start freaking out when entire idea was to apply to china just to make himself look good by giving everyone "exemptions" so he could start a trade war with China (saying that the tariffs wouldn't start one) which he says he'll win
yeh, no such thing as a casualty free war

12:47 PM
everything about the KY teachers stuff is so frustrating ugh
"wait and vote" is a garbage ask KEA
some more radical teachers are talking about working with AFT instead of KEA
I think we're going to get the fund up to support wildcats
yeah that sounds like the consensus on a what now from us

1:35 PM
@fredley In today's edition of people voting against their own best interests...

1:47 PM
@fredley And also soy.
It's possible that US production of soy could drop 70% due to the tariffs.
@Memor-X Even if the doctor matched the description, I think it's still a pretty big ethical violation.

@Wipqozn BUT. HER. EMAILS.

LOCKER UP BUTTERY MALES

@Unionhawk Same with Oklahoma
The legislature just has absolutely no interest in working with the teachers

2:25 PM
I mean yes, that's the thing
KEA is focused on it not mattering to be out now since the legislators aren't in session
like, do you honestly think it makes a difference if they're there or not
the purpose is to make the stakes and the terms very clear, and by asking their members to back off, KEA is undermining any momentum their members had built from friday to monday

2:50 PM
yeah the KY120 UNITED page is shutting out wildcats
asdfoh
really cool in the context of how WV happened

loool

3:16 PM
@TimStone tbf, DMARC is a pain in the ass to set up, but you'd figure the best people would've figured it out by now

@TimStone ... huh?

@TimStone wut

Look just wait and see it'll be fine don't worry
Narrator: It would not, in fact, be fine

Building on the "Hogwarts students were fully armed with lethal weapons" hot take from a few days back, leprechaun gold is fake and evaporates within hours.

@Yuuki literally "tricksy, false"

3:17 PM
SOUNDS LIKE THE GOFUNDME IS READY
oh almost

@GodEmperorDune Yeah, I'm not really surprised or concerned beyond usual about this, since it misses the larger point that everything in tech is in fact terribly constructed
@Yuuki I mean also presumably the gold is only at one end of the rainbow anyway, so what happens if you go in the wrong direction?

Also, that's a neat way of justifying literally everything because "it works in the end".
"So yeah, we're going to take all of your money and give it to big corporations but don't worry. At the end of this whole process, the end of the rainbow, there's a pot of gold."
"That we're going to give to big corporations."
"wait no"

ICE ignoring Mattis order to not deport veterans: report http://hill.cm/t3X1YlP
The only solution is, as usual, an ICE v Army Thunderdome

@TimStone So what happens when an agency doesn't listen to the chain of command?
Wait, is ICE under DoD or Homeland?

3:25 PM
Homeland
> The Post reports that Xilong Zhu enlisted in the Army and enrolled at the University of Northern New Jersey, a university that which was allegedly created by the Department of Homeland Security to appear as a real school in an attempt to catch people who issued fraudulent student visas
Uhhhh
And how exactly was that going to work out?

So... what if a citizen applied to that university?
@TimStone I think you're supposed to give visa information to a university if you're an international student.

They set it up to catch people who had gotten fraudulent visas, not the people who supplied them, because they're monsters

Oh, I see what you mean.

The tone was funereal last night in the media when the news broke that President Trump is not being investigated for crimes associated with Russian interference with the 2016 election. I thought some hate-Trump commentators were going to cry.
You will be shocked to discover that's not actually what the news said

@TimStone Look, Bill O'Reilly lives in a reality where we have yet to discover gravity and its effect on lunar tides. Clearly, that's the news in the universe he lives in.
CROSS-DIMENSIONAL LIVES MATTER

3:34 PM
strike fund in KY is going live shortly, will post both KY and OK in one big thing
these are being run by local chapters, not national, so the funds will go where they are needed
(>_> national's cville fund)

@TimStone honeypot university....
abolish ice NAO
@TimStone shhhh, as long as trump thinks that and agrees to grand jury testimony
@Unionhawk interesting article, ACA is kind of a mess because that's how compromise works
and if we had a congress/administration that was actually interested in fixing for real they could probably resolve this

Good thing they compromised though and got a lot of good will and votes from across the aisle

Here's your map of the day: One look at where soybean grain elevators are located shows exactly the part of the country that China is threatening to hit. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-04-04/brewing-trade-spat-takes-aim-at-u-s-swing-state-soybeans-map via @CescaAntonelli
Price is Right failhorn plays

it was not politically feasible to pass anything more left than what it is

@TimStone lol at the single soybean elevator in Oregon
silly billy what are you doing over there?
Organically grown artisan edamame, I guess?

3:49 PM
We grow soy here but have no dot so I dunno how that works out

Elevators are where massive amounts are stored so I guess it's shipped elsewhere for storage?

Yeah, seems so
Police are investigating reports of "zombie-like" raccoons in Ohio. One animal followed a man to his door, where it proceeded to stand up on its hind legs, show its teeth, then fall over backward into an almost comatose condition. http://cbsn.ws/2GQAyur
Seems normal
NASA awards $250 million contract to build plane for supersonic air travel http://hill.cm/C31jlpM
lol gtfo we're building Concorde 2

@TimStone y tho

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@TimStone Cool
@TimStone Nah, read the article. The point of this one is to be able to fly at supersonic speeds over land
Instead of just over the water

4:00 PM
The US intentionally didn't continue its supersonic program because the shit was just too loud to be used
@SaintWacko I know, but I don't see that actually happening

@TimStone Exactly what this program is trying to fix

wtf?
Obviously I think everyone should want to support these things but being forced to provide lip service is a bit fucked

They're asking for government money, nobody's forcing anyone

@GnomeSlice I feel like they must be oversimplifying the attestation

@KevinvanderVelden the signing was never a requirement before, just seems a little like favoritism

4:12 PM
Waze is sending unwitting drivers onto a street in Los Angeles with a 32% grade — one of the steepest in America. "The car came through our garden, went through two fences and ended up backwards hanging over our driveway.” http://www.latimes.com/local/california/la-me-lopez-echo-park-traffic-20180404-story.html
CDC finds "nightmare bacteria" that can resist most antibiotics spreading across US http://hill.cm/muaKcms
May the nightmare bacteria-infested zombie raccoons come and consume us all with haste

@GnomeSlice the specific language they are objecting to is "Both the job and my organization's core mandate respect individual human rights in Canada, including the values underlying the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms as well as other rights. These include reproductive rights and the right to be free from discrimination on the basis of sex, religion, race, national or ethnic origin, colour,
mental or physical disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity or expression"
Which I'm pretty sure is just a copy-paste from the Charter and the Human Rights Act

@TimStone No

@TimStone love to beat uber down the stairs car

@GnomeSlice calling this a "Liberal purity test" rather than what it actually is (one of the country's founding documents, and a major federal law with wide and multipartisan support) is disingenuous at best, and it does not seem unreasonable for the government to make government funding for organizations contingent on those organizations being willing to at least pinky swear to abide by the Charter and

@puzzlepiece87 Well that's no fun

4:19 PM
the HRA.

@GodEmperorDune lol true
The crazy thing though is that Waze made up some excuse about how it would have to "change the algorithm" or some nonsense to exclude the street
But like
Just mark it as not a street

@ToxicFrog Just as I thought. That article in the paper is over-simplifying it in order to get a reaction

@SaintWacko this is true of most stuff GnomeSlice posts so I'm not surprised

@ToxicFrog Yeah, true

user15026
I get that religious groups want to be able to loudly declare that they don't support these things, and that's fine, okay, they can do that, but they need to realize that taking those stances (which are in direct opposition to the HRA/Charter's statement) are going to come with consequences.

user15026
4:22 PM
Sorry, its 2018.

user15026
@ToxicFrog A lot of these are like random opinion pieces, and quite frankly I'm kinda tired of them overhyping things that are quite logical :(

MISTAKES WERE MADE

user15026
@TimStone O.o

... why does this street exist?

4:25 PM
The article explains that it was originally designed for goats

Also, you'd think that companies based in California would realize that there are some really steep streets.

@Ash So much this
And they go out of their way to phrase them in such a way that it sounds outrageous, to the point that it can't possibly be an accident

And then we were all "What if we just pave over it now that we have cars?" and no one thought twice about this decision

user15026
I think the real thing that bugs me about this style of journalism is that like...it gets to throw a lot of facts and logic out the window in favour of "BUT MY THOUGHTS THEY MATTER" to like....light indignant fires under people

user15026
@TimStone wait what seriously what no goats are nimble and cars are not

4:27 PM
Everything you want in a beer, and less.

@ToxicFrog So it's basically like a business requiring companies it contracts with to follow their ethics guidelines (i.e. Whole Foods requiring farmers to produce products organically)?

user15026
@Yuuki this, but I think a little moreso, because like...these are protected human rights things

@Ash Yeah, way too much journalism has become about trying to influence opinions rather than presenting facts
@Yuuki Yeah, kinda like that
They're pretty much just saying "We're not going to give you money unless you agree to respect human rights"

@Yuuki yeah, except instead of business contracts it's government funding for an org

user15026
I am a faithful human, I get that churches are a thing that are useful to people and they can do good in their communities, but like...I am increasingly tired of this idea that they are exempt from treating people decently and get to do things like ignore HRA/Charter rights because they don't believe in the things.

4:29 PM
@Ash I hate church exemptions so much

user15026
Fine, don't believe in them, but then accept that in this day and age, that is going to come with consequences. Either be okay with the consequences, or adapt.

They never should have existed in the first place
And that includes tax exemptions

@TimStone What?

user15026
I'm guessing this is related to Delta somehow?

4:32 PM
@TimStone PICK AND CHOOSE WINNERS

@Ash Indeed
Look it's not a tax break for Delta if we don't mention them by name

user15026
I forget exactly why this is a thing tho

user15026
Other than Delta is big and ATL is like their home base but I feel like there was more going on?

The Lt. Governor got Mad Online about Delta pulling its program for NRA members which an entire 17 people used

user15026
Riiiiiiight

4:36 PM
To be clear, AFAIK this isn't a complete backpedal of the "penalty", but obviously still beneficial for Delta
@TimStone The funniest part about this is that I completely forgot that Larry Kudlow is now National Economic Council Director
We're in a good place, surely
A settlement with Bill O’Reilly required one of his sexual harassment accusers to “lie – even in legal proceedings or under oath – if any evidence becomes public”. http://money.cnn.com/2018/04/04/media/bill-oreilly-defamation-suit-denied-settlement-under-seal/index.html
Pretty sure that's not how the law works

@TimStone according to that article the lawyer also switched sides. The whole thing doesn't sound even remotely legal and ethical

That's great, just go "I'll agree to that for 20% more"

@TimStone Fuck off autoplaying videos
I can't wait until Chrome blocks that

Because it's completely unenforceable

@SaintWacko Right? I don't know where we went wrong on that one
They always seem to start after you're like half way through the first paragraph too, not even timely to try and trick me into watching them

4:45 PM
@TimStone Also, what a piece of shit

@SaintWacko isn't there a chrome setting for that?

> Incredibly, the filing asserts that Mackris' attorney, Benedict Morelli, switched sides and agreed to become O'Reilly's lawyer while negotiating the agreement.
how is that allowed?

I wish corporate tax breaks weren't a thing. It's turned it into a big race to the bottom for who can offer the best tax break, which then leads to situations like we have in Oklahoma where the coffers are empty because when the oil companies were making the most money the legislature gave them huge tax breaks
@GodEmperorDune It's not, it's a massive conflict of interest. I hope he gets debarred

@GodEmperorDune Anything is allowed if you have enough money and no one can talk about it under fear of lawsuit but oops it's out now

5:22 PM
@Chippies I think so, it might be in chrome:flags though

5:44 PM
Ah, yep, found it

@GnomeSlice Some context of what this is and why people should read it would be good

user15026
(Also, friendly reminder, please only use stars for news stuff.)

7:29 PM
@Ash it's a really long, well researched, and really interesting analysis of some aspects of race tensions as they exist right now in the US
Not really 'news' but I didn't feel it was appropriate for the bridge

7:46 PM
Scoop: Here are details from Trump’s dinner with Safra Catz and Peter Thiel last night. The big govt contract that Oracle and Amazon are competing for was discussed. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-04-04/oracle-s-catz-is-said-to-raise-amazon-contract-fight-with-trump
Ah. Well
I'm sure this will in no way influence the outcome

which contract even is this

@Unionhawk Apparently for DoD cloud storage

Wait Oracle has cloud storage

Yep

Cool to hear that DoD is going to start using Oracle's cloud platform, which if it's like everything else they do, is a really bad cloud platform
which I suppose is likely an improvement over whatever DoD is doing now anyway so

7:59 PM
@GnomeSlice not read it yet, but the title "As America Changes, Some Anxious Whites Feel Left Behind" always makes me feel like "Well fellow white people, tough shit, maybe we shouldn't have f-ed everyone else over"

8:15 PM
@Unionhawk at least that will limit our ability to start wars, right?

lol
no

"i'm sorry sir, i keep trying to open first strike.doc but it says the file is unavailable"

@GodEmperorDune they'll just be even more expensive

weeeeeeeeeeeew

8:18 PM
@GnomeSlice is this michele norris from NPR?

@GodEmperorDune Maybe we'll run into licensing restrictions and go to court about whether the President can start nuclear war without paying for the add-on

@TimStone clearly the DoD stole API names and owes oracle $40 trillion

@KevinvanderVelden "Whites Feel Left Behind" always feels less like "whites are being left behind" and more like "minorities are catching up". Like if you have 80% of <stuff> while two other people have to share the remaining 20% and then you begin to lose <stuff> down to 33% while they get up to 33% each, that might feel like you're being left behind. But that's also because you started way ahead.

@Yuuki when your group has always been in charge, equality feels like oppression

Maybe my perspective is skewed because I'm a minority.

8:36 PM
@Yuuki it's probably also that being poor sucks, no matter the skin color.

@MadScientist If you can buy a pair of bootstraps at Walmart, that's all you need.
Just get some and then use them to pull yourself up!

@MadScientist its also easier to blame someone else instead of doing introspective work and changing yourself
> The irony is evident to Yale. Her grandfather came to Hazleton from Italy in the early 1900s and became an insurance agent and Americanized his name from Yuele to Yale. She knows the same stereotypes were hurled at Italian and Irish immigrants when they first arrived in Hazleton.
so if she understands the irony, where is the compassion for the newcomers?

immigrants in the past had it bad too therefore,

@GodEmperorDune "I had it so hard so you need to have it hard too otherwise you don't deserve it."

@Yuuki but it wasn't her, it was her grandfather

8:41 PM
Or rather "my ancestors had it so hard and I derive an inflated sense of importance from their suffering".

> While the angst over the coming demographic shift might make for more uncomfortable race relations, it might finally usher in a reckoning in which America faces hard truths: The Founding Fathers built white dominance into the fabric and laws of the nation, and a country that proclaims to love freedom and liberty is still struggling with its roots in the original sin of slavery.
too true

@KevinvanderVelden the article is more or less in agreement, although it's presented fairly unbiased. It was a good read
@GodEmperorDune don't know

@GnomeSlice she says it later in the article, it is
@GnomeSlice yes this was a good read, thanks for posting it
"Israeli military officials have announced in advance that, like last Friday, soldiers will again use live fire against demonstrators — even if they are hundreds of feet away from the fence." Again: That's on the PALESTINIAN SIDE of the fence. https://972mag.com/btselem-to-israeli-soldiers-refuse-orders-to-shoot-gaza-protesters/134398/ via @972mag
this thing is so fuct
and i know the trump admin is not going to condemn it
(to be fair, previous democrat and republican administrations have been extremely weak at calling on israel to stop doing bad things)
(like literally calling the PM and saying "cmon, please" but not doing anything with teeth until the obama admin DECLINED TO VOTE on a UN thing on israel's behalf)
personally i have the somehow controversial stance that you shouldn't attack/mace/shoot/hit with a car/spray with water in freezing temperatures unarmed protesters

8:58 PM
@GodEmperorDune I saw some group post that they're starting a newspaper ad campaign in the country like "I can not fire commander" urging idf soldiers to refuse to follow orders to fire at unarmed protestors

@Unionhawk i mean israeli troops hiding behind "just following orders" is horrific considering the history of the thing

They also hide behind a very South Park "they're coming right for us" attitude too
there might be a rock in the region they could have picked up

GoFundMe for KY teachers | GoFundMe for OK teachers | DSA is raising a strike funds to support teachers. Your support will go directly to local chapters, who will ensure funds are disbursed in a timely manner. DSA Metro Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky and DSA Louisville are handling the Kentucky fund, and Green Country DSA is handling the Oklahoma fund.

The situation in both states varies greatly:
In Kentucky, the Kentucky Education Association does not support any strike action until the legislature returns to Frankfort on 4/13, and the KY120 UNITED Facebook group which started this movement is working with KEA to shut out wildcats. Your support will be a signal to anyone who wants to take action that they have people behind them.
In Oklahoma, educators and students are currently marching from Tulsa to OKC, as part of an ongoing walkout.

I'm not sure what that really does to help figure out the why. I mean most of this is just scrutiny and speculation because...well, she's dead.

(I always feel weird about people's lives being hyperanalyzed after their death)

Mostly because people make a lot of unfounded assumptions based on usually not a lot of actual hard data

yep
i've seen right wing sites claim she was left wing and left wing sites claim she was right wing
only thing that seems to be accurately widespread is that she was angry
(TERFs are claiming some other bullshit too)

@GodEmperorDune as any normal person does

@Unionhawk TERFs never miss an opportunity to spread transphobia

@Ash oh, it seems her motivations were because of recent youtube policies removing some of her videos and affecting her revenue where she began to hate the company from what i heard on SkyNews
ofcause this does just demonstrait how stupid it is to rely just on youtube for income. as Phillip DeFranco says even before youtube's recent unpredictableness in it's policies and algorithms you should be diversifying youself and have other ways to bring in money

@Memor-X US capitalism is great at convincing people to pour a lot of time and effort into something on the extremely small chance that it makes a ton of money

@GodEmperorDune i always thought it was people being stupid in seeing a top youtuber come out with how much money they are making and go "oh that looks easy to do for good money", you know, the mentality of alot of wannabe critics
like that Ninja guy who was streaming Fortnite on twitch and the news outlets point out how much me makes. he doesn't make that just from playing games but a whole bunch of people will think that

@Memor-X the whole "rags to riches" meme is endemic and not at all accurate. For every person that works out for, there are many many more who stay in rags because the system is cruel to those in poverty
