A collaborative thread among @washingtonpost, @chicagotribune, and @baltimoresun about the timeline of events after the killing of #MLK

The Caravan is largely broken up thanks to the strong immigration laws of Mexico and their willingness to use them so as not to cause a giant scene at our Border. Because of the Trump Administrations actions, Border crossings are at a still UNACCEPTABLE 46 year low. Stop drugs!
So if I followed correctly in the span of like four days he invented a caravan of people coming to the border, signed an order deploying National Guard troops, and claimed credit for the caravan being "broken up"
@TimStone actually you forgot about the first bit, he did this shortly after Fox News reported it. so he was probably watching it before tweeting about it and from what i saw on the Philip DeFranco Show no one knows any specifics
running the country via watching Fox News and Twitter
Tomorrow, April 5th, is the 8th anniversary of the Upper Big Branch (UBB) mine tragedy, which took the lives of 29 coal miners. You can read my statement on the anniversary here: http://bit.ly/2IuExKr #wvsen
As US prepares to sanctions Russian oligarchs (a big step), Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters today: "The phrase āRussian oligarchsā is considered inappropriate. The time when there were oligarchs in Russia passed long ago, there are no oligarchs in Russia.ā
Criticism of Pruittās $50 a night housing deal is unfair. Thereās a place within walking distance of EPA for that amount. Granted, itās a youth hostel and you have to sleep with 9 other people and share a bathroom. But breakfast is included.
also we're reading "What You Are Getting Wrong About Appalachia" and it's real good
> The press attempted to analyze what it presented as the extraordinary and singular pathologies of Appalachians, scolding audiences to get out of their bubbles, and embrace empathy with the "forgotten America" before its residents elected Donald Trump. After the election, when it became too late, the pendulum swung in the opposite direction .... Appalachia, political commentators proclaimed, could reap what it had sown.
> The [Appalachian Regional Commission]'s definition of Appalachia includes 420 counties
Some poor accountant is in big trouble this morning. https://www.opensecrets.org/news/2018/04/exclusive-robert-mercer-backed-a-secretive-group-that-worked-with-facebook-google-to-target-anti-muslim-ads-at-swing-voters/
McConnell boasts that blocking Obama's SCOTUS nominee "was the most consequential decision Iāve made in my entire public career" http://bit.ly/2GzezZu
Like, there's no continuation there, that's it. The entire purpose is to make people afraid that there's all these children who will become gang members, not suggest any actual solution
@TimStone So... instead of fostering unaccompanied minors with stable households to promote a healthy childhood, we'll be sending them back to their "shithole" countries where they have a higher chance of becoming gang members who might then be sent to infiltrate the US?
Okay before I post this I need to clarify that the tweet is actually extremely wrong in its wording because I was trying to figure out how the hell this would even be possible, but
"Fox & Friends" host suggests Kimmel's impression of Melania was racist http://hill.cm/dDZGh5R
They said that the manner in which he did it, if a white commentator had done it about Michelle Obama, would have been racist, which is a confusing and dumb take but not quite the same thing as saying what he did was itself racist since they're both actually quite white
@Yuuki She's Slovenian, which is Italy-adjacent
Sandwiched between Italy, Austria, Hungary, and Croatia
@Unionhawk I'm not sure why but "My latest:" like I give two shits always bugs me, as a general thing
An article being worth reading isn't because a particular person wrote it, though certain people have consistently terrible takes so I guess it can work in the opposite direction
@TimStone Job security in today's media world means brand-building. You don't have to be Andrew Sullivan to want people invested in you personally as a writer unless you enjoy pink slips.
@puzzlepiece87 I don't really, at least not for the purposes of caring about the next article they themselves write
But more about the phrasing, I guess, where there's an implicit point that it should be read because they wrote it, or something? I'm not entirely sure why it irks me
@TimStone i follow some writers i like so them saying "my latest" indicates that it is a thing i would enjoy
what annoys me though is when they send multiple tweets about the same article over the course of the day, but not threaded so i can't immediately see that they are linking the same article
So, I dunno if it's been mentioned in here or not, but the owner of the waterpark where the kid was decapitated last year has been charged with murder, along with the designer of the ride. Second-degree murder.
That's a whole discussion, but one part of it likely centers on the fact that danger inherent with guns is kind of "on the tin", so to speak? The ride was just manifestly unsafe, which wasn't self-evident by virtue of them letting people get on it
There was a whole incident where the raft went airborne previously and someone hit their face on that pole, and rather than saying "hmm this is a problem" they destroyed the incident reports, had lifeguards write coached statements, and altered the medical records
It's just, completely insane vs firearms manufacturing being slightly less completely insane (and also explicitly protected from liability)
Or the sequence where some dude smashed all of his toes and while he was lying there in agony the owner was like "pretty sweet ride huh? Yeah I helped design it"
didn't they also put it specifically on the KS side of the border for regulatory reasons or something stupid like that
also woo we have over $5,000, we can fulfill 11 suggested cap of $500 requests
including INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY AAA
lol
Kevin Williamson has been fired from The Atlantic.
From Jeffrey Goldberg's letter to staff: "The language he used in this podcastāand in my conversations with him in recent daysāmade it clear that the original tweet did, in fact, represent his carefully considered views."
this almost certainly releases a bunch of actual criminals. But the alternative would be to lock up innocents. You really need to spend the money to at least randomly cross check samples in other labs
CNN: President Trump considered replacing Attorney General Jeff Sessions with Scott Pruitt as recently as this week, despite the EPA head's ongoing scandals.
@quartata Yeah but you'd think given Jeff Sessions not doing anything recently and Scott Pruitt doing all these things needlessly like he'd just not bother and yet here we are
@GodEmperorDune I mean he clearly perjured himself during his confirmation hearing, but I don't think anything else since then
@MadScientist the sad thing is that even if you were somehow able to impeach trump, pence, and all of the cabinet, the next level officials are just as bad
@GodEmperorDune Impeachment would mean they're all lame ducks. And any investigations that actually produce an impeachment would almost certainly take down a lot more people than just Trump
@MadScientist i have a feeling if dems take the house in 18 they're going to vote to impeach once a week much like the republican house voted to repeal obamacare 400 times
Five EPA Officials Challenged Spending, First Class Travel, Security Demands re Pruitt. Then they were demoted, transferred, removed or asked to leave their jobs. with @kenvogel @LFFriedman https://nyti.ms/2EnPGKf
"Look what I was doing wasn't unsavoury I just had to fire a lot of people to get my way"
Aboard Air Force One, President Trump told reporters that he did not know that his personal attorney paid adult-film star Stormy Daniels $130,000 days before the presidential election. Trump also said he doesnāt know where Cohen got the money.
I mean Cohen told us all where he supposedly got the money so it seems like that would have been a good place to start but sure pretend you have no idea at all what's going on it is all a mystery
@TimStone coupled with him giving inappropriately high raises to buddies
> Mr. Weese, the security official, questioned Mr. Pruittās desire to use flashing lights and sirens in his motorcade ā a perk more commonly associated with the presidency ā according to three of the people who worked with or for the E.P.A.
this dude is a piece of work
> There were also questions raised about a request that Mr. Pruitt be issued a bulletproof sport utility vehicle with so-called run flat tires, which keep a vehicle moving even when sustaining gunfire. And they challenged Mr. Pruittās expanded security detail of approximately 20 members, three times the size of his predecessorās. Unlike his most recent counterpart under Mr. Obama, Gina McCarthy, Mr. Pruitt has security officials follow him wherever he travels, and also stay on duty overnight.
it sounds like this bro has watched too many action movies
Daily Mail, so all the usual caveats, but theyāre reporting that MBS is bragging about getting hand-delivered US intel that aided his power consolidation... from the presidentās son in law, who doesnāt hold a clearance http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5575395/Saudi-crown-prince-brags-Jared-Kushner-handed-U-S-intelligence.html
Wikileaks founder Julian Assange never reveals his sources. Ever.
We now have evidence that during the 2016 campaign, Assange actively sought DNC emails from a Russian government persona.

have gotten multiple reports that Dropbox SF is on lockdown due to an active shooter in the area. if you work near that area of SoMA (2nd and Brannan), stay indoors.
@TimStone SFPD tweeting that the reports are without merit thankfully
Thieves are intercepting debit cards in the postal mail and replacing their chips to steal funds once the cards are activated.
I'm not even mad. That's amazing.
https://krebsonsecurity.com/2018/04/secret-service-warns-of-chip-card-scheme/
They take the new unactivated chip, steal it, then replace it with a dud, send it on to the company, who activates it, allowing the thief to use the new chip until it gets deactivated
Since there's no verification of the chip during activation (over the phone or whatever) no one notices until later
Yeah, it does seem like a lot of effort though given they could just make a lot of online transactions without the chip, but I guess they're probably taking out cash
lol, this, a thing that has no chance in hell, is being brought to the floor because of an agreement Ryan made with Walker. But what about all those other agreements? š¤
> The amendment, introduced by House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), would require a "true majority" in both the House and Senate to pass tax increases and a three-fifths majority in both chambers to increase the debt limit.
3/5ths to pass debt limit for things already authorized

Kudlow just said yesterday that it was all hypothetical and a negotiating tactic, no worries
Narrator: It looked like we would indeed be going ahead with the tariffs
I have no idea when they'd start, technically, though
The problem with Trump using anything as a "negotiating tactic" is that he doesn't have any idea what he wants because he doesn't understand what reality is so there's zero chance this doesn't end poorly
Oh my goodness I have just seen two insanely dumb things on Twitter and my brain is broken
Want to see Indiana Jones as a woman? Spielberg: "Weād have to change the name from Jones to Joan. And there would be nothing wrong with that" http://thr.cm/GqS7NJ
DC government issues citation to owner of apartment Scott Pruitt rented because they did not have proper license to rent the unit. Possible fine of $2,034
