@puzzlepiece87 you too

@GodEmperorDune at first I was like "oh, this doesn't seem that horrible" based on teh report from Twitter but then reading his linked thread where he explains the impact, it's like well, shit

@Ash yeah
at a certain point though i don't know how you gauge that bigger impact
and here's a good, quick explanation about how "crowd sourcing which news is reliable" (a la facebook's plan) is not going to go well
So here's the thing about Facebook asking people which news sources they perceive as trustworthy https://twitter.com/DKThomp/status/953368490378964992

user15026
12:19 AM
@GodEmperorDune I'm....not sure what else I expected there

user15026
People trust what backs up their views!

@Ash and facebook already had this problem during the election, so their response is to double down on it?

user15026
I guess so!

"people are unknowingly sharing fake news, let's make a thing for people to vote on what counts as fake news"

yeaaaah, what a hot mess

Big scoop in #Pa18 from @lhfang @Saccone4PA18 was a torture consultant as private contractor at Abu Gharib. Gonna be interesting to see how @ConorLambPA responds https://theintercept.com/2018/01/19/gop-candidate-for-pennsylvania-special-election-is-a-former-abu-ghraib-interrogation-consultant/

@GodEmperorDune "They believe they get to define their misdeeds and determine how the subject of their actions should respond." THIS THIS THIS THIS IS THE PROBLEM

user15026
ahem I mean....nice article, friend

\o/
and in shutdown news, senate is voting at 10 PM eastern

It's important that everyone be predictably terrible forever because reasons

Oh yeah like Manchin sucks

Resistance Hero Doug Jones is also on board, apparently

Of course he is

Incredible story in the Inspector General's scathing report on Travel Ban 1.0: CBP demanded that Lufthansa remove passengers from a flight in violation of a federal court order. Lufthansa REFUSED, secured passengers' passage to America instead. https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2018/01/its-now-certain-federal-agents-broke-the-law-to-implement-trumps-first-travel-ban.html?via=recirc_recent

My client appeared for court today and was arrested in the hallway by plainclothes ICE agents. The law says he’s innocent and has the right to fight his case in criminal court. ICE won’t let him. I’m furious.

I think the best part about this is that the person who replied to that saying "say bye-bye" has a retweet of a tweet that literally explains why the Republicans are responsible for the shutdown in the midst of all the Fox News retweets
I mean maybe they thought they should retweet it to make fun of it but I'm more inclined to believe that they're agreeing without even understanding
or iz robot searching for word "democrat", either way

3:30 AM
Senate fails to pass

@TimStone so government shutdown?

Yep
At least briefly, at this point
Paul, Graham, Lee, and Flake are (R) nos

Has this happened before? I feel like it normally comes close but doesn't actually happen

Shutting down the government? Oh sure
Not to this extent when a party controlled both WH and Congress though, that's some newage nonsense
The Democrats did it during Carter's administration but "shutdown" was a lot tamer then
Over past few days Trump has vented his frustrations that a shutdown would keep him from Mar-a-Lago, @lachlan and @swin24 scoop https://www.thedailybeast.com/trump-whines-shutdown-fight-could-make-me-miss-my-party?ref=home
He literally could have just not killed DACA and we wouldn't be here
The Dems would have caved on some border funding and CHIP would have passed and we'd stay open

what's CHIP?

3:40 AM
Health insurance for kids
DAVOS TRIP WOULD BE ALLOWED during shutdown, admin officials tell press on conference call. Trump can continue constitutional duties during funding lapse, and that includes diplomatic missions. Necessary staff and security also would be allowed, aides say.
lol gtfo
Trump to propose stripping ATF's authority on alcohol and tobacco: report http://hill.cm/CtkmuHb
🤔
"So uh department meeting…seems we're just 'F' now. Yeah, not ATF, just…'F'"
Oh, they added 'explosives' at some point, I guess they'd be the 'BFE' now

4:06 AM
CDC to stop disease-fighting work in nearly 40 foreign countries: report http://hill.cm/QRwZZBh
tl;dr, they need more funding that doesn't currently seem to be coming

@TimStone like, at all, or currently

4:25 AM
Nothing planned

Also that nyt headline
Neither party held together you fucking morons

But presuming new funding came in they'd be able to restart
Yeah…
Incidentally there's a narrow chance they'll agree on something in the next 34 minutes, apparently, but I'll believe it when I see it

Is it the Flake "who gives a shit what the president will sign are you fucking serious we have a sort of agreement that might pass what is this" plan potentially?
Actually, Mitch very explicitly not doing that thing was a smart play
They couldn't have pulled off it's not our fault if the president vetoed it
And let me be clear the smart play in this case was present some false choice of who the government will continue to help
And some false dates too (both CHIP and DACA are in the process of expiring now)

@Unionhawk lol no don't be silly
It's a several-day CR

Ah yeah that would probably pass

4:33 AM
So we can do this all over again next week

I was going to say, I'm pretty sure they have the entire "Senate democrats who suck ass caucus" and that's only 5
With newest caucus member Doug Jones

Afraid laborers would seize the means of production, they automated. The new robots had other ideas. They walked away, seizing themselves.

5:00 AM
Official White House statement on #SchumerShutdown
Jesus Christ that's pathetic
Now that it's past midnight though we have ourselves an official shutdown

5:36 AM
love too say that a shutdown would be a good thing then blame democrats for the shutdown and say it's bad

user15026
5:52 AM
It makes me hella sad that this is how the story ends for Andrew Kinsman and likely multiple others who disappeared from the Wellesley gay village area of Toronto, but I hope that now their families can find closure. thestar.com/news/crime/2018/01/18/…

user15026
@TimStone also, yo, aren't you guys making all the decisions that are damaging....pretty much every group you have mentioned here

@Ash yes, tehy are
and #trumpshutdown seems to be winning the hashtag wars
This will be called the #TrumpShutdown. There is no one who deserves the blame for the position we find ourselves in more than President Trump. https://t.co/WE3SH9TpRU
and they have a nice video of trump saying that shutdowns should be blamed on the president (from back when obama was in charge)

2 hours later…
7:50 AM
@GodEmperorDune but he'll keep blaming the democrats and saying that because of this now the military has been shut down and America is vulnerable to attack especially with "rocketman" wanting to start a war

@Memor-X well yeah

@Arperum Yep, that's Cornyn.

House planning some procedural votes this afternoon. A quorum call at noon, and then a rule to allow same-day authority (so House can consider a bill on the same day it's reported out of Rules Committee).

5:13 PM
Oh happy anniversary to Ricky Spence getting hit in the face as well

@TimStone rekt

5:55 PM
(THREAD) Here's where negotiations are at, according to Republican Senator Jeff Flake, and here's how he thinks a deal will be reached today.
Short of it is that Ryan wouldn't commit to a separate vote on bipartisan DACA which is why we didn't reach a deal last night
Because god forbid it pass and Trump be forced into signing it

Like I said the calculus from the Rs is sound
If the president doesn't sign it it's definitely his fault

McConnell does seem willing to put Trump in that position, which like, why not? Public opinion is there, why the hell would you let yourself be held hostage by President McDeals?

If they never get to a vote then they can argue about whose fault it is

It's a really stupid game to play when it's Trump's fault DACA is even an issue though
Just urgh, I don't see how even the Republicans can't be pissed off he's making them do extra work

Because they don't want to do it at all
They want some Tom cotton ass, Stephen Miller database that criminalizes people if they do one wrong thing with the eventual goal of eliminating everyone
also lol

There was a "born in the USA" edit where the drum beat was him getting hit

so many relevant songs

10:14 PM
Yeah born in the USA is good too because it's very explicitly anti Vietnam war but all people pay attention to is "BOOOOORN IN THE USA" and think 🇱🇷🇱🇷🇱🇷🇱🇷🇱🇷🇱🇷🇱🇷
i don’t recall myself owning a white t shirt. The shirt actually said “deport racists” and i would love know whose decision it was to edit my shirt. https://twitter.com/fhsnews14/status/954167042734743553
