#BREAKING: Trump Jr. ends Secret Service protection, claims he needs more privacy: report http://hill.cm/UP8Cgj5 https://t.co/vgZPXvOw3h
Uh, okay

I SWEAR I saw a copypasta like that
It was about bannon though

Considering that a politician was literally already shot, I feel like that's either on-brand level of lack of foresight by a member of the Trump family or sketchy as hell

> In other words, even though the goal we seek may be far away, unless we name it and fight for it today, it will never come.
FUCKIN YEP

Update: NHC has upgraded Hurricane Maria to Category 5. It was Cat 1 this morning, one of the fastest intensifying hurricanes in history.
THIS ISN'T A COMPETITION, MARIA

12:41 AM
rip america

@TimStone it is

1776-2016

I'm pretty sure America is 2017 years old

There is undoubtedly multiple people on Twitter willing to back you up on that

(I'm not perfect on american history but I assume taking declaration of independency as the year USA was formed is probably not the worst idea)

12:44 AM
@TimStone Oh, The Hill with the helpful radar image of doom:

@Avery bicentennial was in 1976 so yes

luv 2 go to black Clouds of Death status

Isn't it basically Irma track too

I mean it's too early to tell but Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands are in-path
Apparently this is the first time since 2007 we've had two Cat 5s in the same season, too

"Police confiscate apple cider vinegar that helps combat known chemical agents cops spray in ppl's faces" https://twitter.com/stlcountypd/status/909607645195022336
💯

2:10 AM
@TimStone oh goddammit

@Yuuki make u think
Apple cider vinegar is standard black bloc first aid equipment but who knows what it could be

2:56 AM
@fredley I'm looking at the article on FiveThirtyEight now, and in the visualization of different country's approval of different Trump policies, it lists a single Middle East country where a majority of respondents approves of the Muslim Ban - and it's not Israel
I'm so confused

3:07 AM
@PrivatePansy Which one?
Qatar?

I don't know, the visualization only named Israel and Turkey. I could dig into the source, but I'm laaaaaazy
@Yuuki Don't think so, weren't they one of the countries affected by the ban?
Ah, no, it's "Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen"
Hmmm, I could see them supporting the US on this then, maybe?

It's either Qatar or Saudi Arabia.
Qatar is in a bad place right now, geopolitically speaking.
They're the nouveau riche to Saudi Arabia's old money.

I wouldn't call the Saudis old money
No, wait, I'm thinking of the UAE

As far as current Middle East geopolitics goes, they are.

4 hours later…
7:11 AM
wrong
If you’ve heard of Elf on the Shelf, you may be entitled to a class action settlement
there
why here? idk

7:36 AM
@Avery I've been seeing that pop up on the various things I follow lately... out of curiosity I looked it up on Google trends... guess it starts every year around this time.

why though

because people love bad/easy puns?

no like
why pop up around same time every year

> Elf on the Shelf started as a Christmas tradition where people placed an elf on a shelf and promote paranoia in their kids by saying the doll could see everything they did.

aaaaah

7:42 AM
Seems to gel with the timeline of the spike, hits the peak around the beginning of December...

and that's kinda fucked up.

It's not the worst Christmas tradition (coughZwartePietcough), physical reminder that Santa "Knows when you've been bad or good"

I'm considering making one that's "rock on a cock", but it's Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson on a rooster

I like that idea.

it's not even close to the worst I've seen online

7:51 AM
Although this may be the first year "Elf on the Shelf" has attained full-blown meme status, would be interesting to see how the trend spikes on google this year compared to previous.

@Nzall dwane johnson?
chris rock is a comedian

oh right
that's another option, Chris rock on a cock

@Nzall yeah that sounds pretty porny

@TrentHawkins not a christmas tradition

How about a pack of Pokemon cards on a male chicken? Booster on a Rooster?

7:53 AM
Best I've seen thus far was "Orange on a Door Hinge"

@Nzall hue

@GodEmperorDune I don't know how to interpret grunts, so I'm just going to view that as wholesome admiration

@Nzall hue is a a memeful laugh of appreciation, so close enough

Hue is one part of some color systems

I've also seen someone photoshop an outside water faucet on Donald Trump's forehead and call it Spigot on a Bigot

7:56 AM
@KevinvanderVelden this too
@Nzall did yall see terf on a smurf and yahtzee on a nazi?

@TrentHawkins hmm I can't find anything definitive, our government basically said 2 years ago that they won't get involved in private institutions
Well, in this one at least

There was also this Dutch song 15 years ago that goes "Ik heb een toe-toe-toeter op mijn waterscooter", which translates loosely to "I got a ho-ho-horn on my jetski", but because the rhyme in Dutch works so well, I'm reminded of the song

a year ago? Isn't it more like a decade and a half ago

oh right, a decade ago
or even 15 years ago

2003 apparently

8:01 AM
Close enough

Then why did they release a 10 year anniversary version in 2012?

Because money
Wait no google lied to me
Released in 2002, in the top 40 in 2013, I don't know why google said 2013 was the release date

Yeah, I doubt they're going to release their 10yo anniversary remix after 9 years, that would just be dumb
Aand I got sucked into the Dutch Parody Song rabbit hole

... they've made a song called "toeter op m'n waterscooter", of course they're dumb

8:06 AM
So apparently someone already did one of those suggestions above:
I assume that's Dwayne Johnson?

8:18 AM
@GodEmperorDune terf on a smurf got so controversial

9:17 AM
@Yuuki Could be Saudi, the muslim ban gives them a platform to expand their own nationalism

2 hours later…
11:36 AM
These idiots are going to get owned in court and it's awesome

2 hours later…
2:08 PM
Oh, is BakedAlaska a white supremacist Twitter?
And some guy was trying to trademark Pepe memes?

It's his current grift yes
His previous one was BLM

@bakedalaska @Cernovich Are you a fucking moron

In case you were going to confuse him for someone with actual strongly held beliefs

@Avery hue

that's not how it works
even I know it

2:14 PM
These idiots are going to go to court and they're going to get owned and it's going to be awesome

:joy:
also I'm not even on vpn why can't I see that twitter pls

This is why when twitter says they can't ban nazis they are lying because they literally do

@Unionhawk yeah they don't have a good success rate in courts

@GodEmperorDune I think Baked is also in another DMCA case
He's not a smart person
as it turns out

hate makes you dumb

2:17 PM
@Unionhawk who would've guessed

He maced himself to own the left and uses his mom's uber account
And is now facing 2 distinct DMCAs
Divine justice or something

> He maced himself to own the left
what
I'll need article links

@Avery He got maced in Unite The Right, as he switched from facecam to regularcam on periscope, and there were periscope cameras all around yet somehow we didn't actually see it happen
All we saw was him switch, 1 second, then it switches back and his sunglasses are off and he's begging for more milk

oh is he The Crying Nazi?

@GodEmperorDune no, he's a different guy who got maced

2:22 PM
@Unionhawk makes you think

in other news
Trump using his Kim Jong-un nickname in address to UN: "Rocket man is on a suicide mission for himself and his regime.

@Avery I mean it is technically a conspiracy theory, but they also don't have footage in all those cameras
Somehow
@GodEmperorDune Can someone tell him that Kim Jong-un probably loves the nickname "rocket man"

this all reminds me that I should contact the artist and get the copyright passed over to my name or the license to use it as I want to be declared non-revokable
(talking about my profile picture)

@Unionhawk I mean, the law might be different under the DCMA.

digital copyright maga act

2:30 PM
donald covfefe maga act

Watching the President of the United States mispronounce words live to the UN General Assembly is cringeworthy

I choose not

@PrivatePansy relevant message

You get to drink whenever he messes up
Actually, just take a sip. Don't want to die of alcohol poisoning

> Cooountributions

2:32 PM
Half drink

> us pays most money to UN

We pay 22%... we pay far more than anyone realizes...

um, you formed it? you're one of the richest countries?

That's... a contradiction
Ewwwwwww
Paraphrasing: We believe human rights and dignity is important, but it ain't important enough for us to pay for it

WHY AREN'T WE PAYING 1/211 AKA 0.47%
MAKE U THINK

2:37 PM
America first but not when paying for UN

Is the US a neighbor of Venezuela?

people starving is bad
except when they're in SF

How did he flip into US trade with Latam countries? Then back again?

@PrivatePansy Trump-phrasing: I believe human rights— I love human rights, everyone knows I love human rights— and dignity is important. Everyone knows this. You know it, I know it, everyone knows it. But we're paying too much, too much. My uncle, J. Donald Trump, he was a genius, he went to MIT you know, he said we're paying too much. He's a smart guy, a really smart guy. It's too much, they tell me, it's too much. You know what else is too much? How many electoral college votes I got.

that wasn't very nice
he sure do talks about middle class a lot as someone who never experienced a life as a middle class person

2:41 PM
Well
Everyone in America is wealthy by aspiration
So the estate tax is a middle class issue
therefore Trump is middle class
QED

> speaks about sacrifices for country
> bans certain groups from army

That's actually how estate tax arguments work, "I hope to have a big estate one day!"

> Donald Trump at UN: US may 'have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea'

@Avery afaik the pentagon is not doing the thing
for now

still ironic.

2:43 PM
I think the pentagon told people they should reenlist if they want even

woke america

@fredley RIP my city

I'll be honest.
His speech is good.
it's full of lies, it's inconsistent, but it's, well
he's a businessman

All of Trump's speeches make more sense if you just think of them as aural shitposts

speaking in a way that cause people to feel close is his specialty
his (former) job, even.

2:46 PM
it's a con artist trick
basically fools you into doing what he wants
and somehow people think it's "authentic"

yeah

It totally rules that we elected the dumbest man on the planet

@Avery my personal favorite reply:
@MattBors @bakedalaska @Cernovich If copyright was never applied for and paid, then no, he doesn't. Even if, he has… https://twitter.com/i/web/status/909928319805566976

When you hire your lawyer from r/legaladvice

> I'm a professional artist, I do this everyday
cool story
@Unionhawk IANAL but I'm a lawyer

2:50 PM
@Unionhawk This actually isn't true, but he's top 5

ooh boy that person's twitter bio is really spicy

Damn, this chat isn't moving automatically anymore
I think

> FREE SPEECH IS MORE THAN A LAW
no it's not
well
it is

I mean it's a series of 2 words

@Avery I AM THE LAW

2:52 PM
It's a philosophical concept

but it's bound by rules of the law

It's an assembly of 11 characters

> pro-private property
not a fan of parks apparently either

Trumps talk of socialism being a dangerous ideology brought me back to the height of the Cold War
And I wasn't even born back then
So Trump is making me feel @Sternold

Yeah we're real dangerous

2:54 PM
"Commie" is making a comeback too

There was a tweet earlier some time saying something to the effect of "communist/socialist" is the only ideological label where people go "hell yeah seize the means of production" instead of "centrist is a slur"
which, yes
but yes donald you're right the decomodification of healthcare is a dangerous proposal
after all how will people die from not being able to afford healthcare if it's decommodified
the free market is the only way because it's totally good that insurance companies have a goal of making a profit

3:09 PM
I've been out and about so I assume the President has made an ass of us all at the UN again but also lol at this:
My letter to @BillCassidy explaining how his bill uniquely and disproportionally hurts his home state of Louisiana. https://t.co/5re6ETMMiw
Love to get told by the Health Secretary of my own state

3:25 PM
Should screenshots of headlines be considered news items?

Sen. Kennedy (R-LA) says he's submitted amendments to Graham-Cassidy that would bar states from using $ to create single-payer systems

@Unionhawk what a jerk

Okay, I'm going to vote no then.
Speak now or forever hold your peace.
Or your piece. But if the latter, preferably not in public.

@Yuuki hue
@Yuuki i think so

@Unionhawk And what do the states have to say about this? I'd be surprised if that wasn't an unconstitutional violation of the division of powers between the federal and state governments

3:45 PM
@MBraedley the only people who actually care about Whatever amendment are libertarians who want to destroy department of ed

@Unionhawk Ed has his own department? Wow, he must be special :P

Nah, special ed is way underfunded

@MBraedley I mean it's federal money so they can add whatever stupid regulations they want since the states can just refuse to take it, but meh
It's still a super dick move

4:50 PM
@TimStone I mean, if NY and CA implement single payer, then people will move to NY and CA!
It's clearly a potential attack

I don't know what I expected
Is that just a 300 header

@Unionhawk No, since PC would pick that up
I found a new way to redirect that I didn't know existed
It will redirect even if you have javascript totally disabled, in fact I don't think there's any way to prevent redirection
Hooray for unused and basically forgotten about features of Hyper Text Markup Language

@fredley thanks

5:12 PM
Oh, the meta refresh tag
The meta tag basically allows you to specify HTTP headers in HTML
It's not uncommon if you need a redirect and have no way to use headers or HTTP status code, eg. on Geocities

@fredley I'm assuming it's meta refresh?
I always add one of those in because some really old browsers don't understand Location:
bad habit

@quartata I mean, really old in this case means Netscape old

Yeah, I know

Or @Sternold I guess

that's why it's a bad habit
don't really need it anymore
but I do it anyways because why not

5:16 PM
I mean, a 3xx response doesn't need a body, no?
So adding a body would slow it down, although the difference is academic

Hmm actually
I usually just give a Location: and I don't specify a status code so I'm guessing PHP sends 200 OK
I wonder why this has been working for so long
yeah ok it works
function redir($str) {
     header("Location: $str");
     echo "<meta http-equiv=\"Refresh\" content=\"0;url=$str\">";
}
this is what's in my folder of boilerplate crap
I commented out the Location one and Chrome still redirects me
now
I do actually have Netscape on my O2
but it's in storage so I can't test it :(
why are we talking about this in this room again
maybe move?

no

holy shit/cc @fredley

> A joint resolution condemning the violence and domestic terrorist attack that took place during events between August 11 and August 12, 2017, in Charlottesville, Virginia, recognizing the first responders who lost their lives while monitoring the events, offering deepest condolences to the families and friends of those individuals who were killed and deepest sympathies and support to those individuals who were injured by the violence, expressing support for the Charlottesville community, rejecting White nationalists, White supremacists, the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis, and other hate groups,
> urging the President and the President's Cabinet to use all available resources to address the threats posed by those groups.

I see you also get ProPublica notifications on stuff that actually got signed like 5 days late
probably

yes
also integra which I believe relies on propublica

lol
I saw those emails like "oh fuck what now" then I saw "SJRes 49" and was like "oh that's old news"

if you know anything better I can nag the dev of integra and stuff

7:45 PM
So I found a fantastic tech talk that kinda touches on controversial news items... TIF or bridge?

I don't, I specifically looked up SJRes 49 one day and it happened to be the day he signed it

@Ash hue

Because I didn't expect him to sign it

I'm going to assume that there's someone new here and I would like you to read the room description. You don't need to say anything, you can stay anonymous or whatever.

@Unionhawk That's just free CommieSocialist removal tho

It's taxpayer removal is what it is

Equifax says 100,000 Canadians affected by data breach. Says they'll be notified by mail and offered protection. BG: http://cbc.ca/1.4295357

user15026
@Avery I'm curious if it is just people with ties to the US stuff or if it's any Canadians affected. It's a relatively small number considering the population size, so I suspect it's very specific criteria they're looking for

user15026
Guess there's not much you really can do other than the usual "this is how to be safe with credit" things until they possibly send you a thing in the mail

@Ash idk but I suppose best way to know is waiting until mails start to arrive

user15026
Yeah, exactly

@Avery I wonder how the UK faired in this
I heard they were affected too.

wait
how
like sure you might lie but...
trump... apologizing?

@Unionhawk lol what the shit

@TimStone Donald Trump loves authoritarians
Who could have guessed
earpiece we are getting word that literally everybody should have guessed this

<insert alt-right-y quote in a sarcastic manner as a response to uni>

pfft you alt left idiot erdo is a PRESIDENT not a dictator
Owned by logic
If I get flagged down for that it'll be better than the time @ori got banned for calling himself an idiot after changing his name to gnomeslice

11:24 PM
@Unionhawk well yes

You can't be a president and a fascist folks it's against the rules

the stuff that passed that allows dictatorship gets into place after next elections
which I'll be able to vote on, yaysers... except best alternative is a turk nationalist lady which is like ugh
well, that is if erdo doesn't go for early elections
but yes legally currently he's not a dictator
but practically he is because he pretty much controls everything even if it isn't that visible

I think "dictator" is generally more of a de facto description than a legal position
And quite a few dictators throughout history were legally elected

well calling him a dictator requires a tinfoil hat, though not an extreme one
I'm not sure if I could stick together enough legally obtained proof of it.
Though with illegally obtained ones... that becomes a little easier (there are leaked phone calls etc).

11:42 PM
You don't actually have to have a bulletin board to figure it out though
He's making moves to increase and elongate his power

yes
like I could say that I'm 99.9999% sure of it

Historically, the point where you no longer need a tinfoil hat to think a leader is a dictator is the point where they have accumulated enough power that they are comfortable exercising their authority without worrying about losing that power

Here's a hot take: maybe they don't have enough money for that avocado toast.

@Yuuki hue

Stop spending money on your home mortgage and maybe you can buy some avocado toast, millenials.

I both eat out less and buy fewer groceries than the average person because I eat so many meals at work

nope nope nope

@murgatroid99 So what you're saying is that millennials are increasingly being employed by Google?

11:55 PM
@Yuuki Google employment statistics support that hypothesis

Man, I want my Google job...
And my Soros bucks.
And my avocado toast.

Of course, there are probably other companies that also offer that perk

And my license to kill industries.

@murgatroid99 hiring millenials?
that's like the time i applied to a company with a website that listed "complies with OSHA" as a benefit
