@CaldeiraG It's one of those 'team building' meetings. My company likes team-building, in your free time of course, and I've been sorely lacking participation XD
@CaldeiraG It's an interesting theory... but not much more than that. If you have a team of consultants that are all working on different projects for different clients, that's a whole different team than the team that works together daily. I feel this wheel is much more applicable to day-to-day work than to 'spare time team building'
I don't like team-building theories. When you use the word "team" you utilize social groups as a a way to an end. Contrary to social group being the end. Like you do using the term social capital.
@ArthurHv I like the theories... but as just that, theories about how teams form ;) The problem with team-building theories is that they are often used to develop team-building frameworks or practices that try to enforce the things the theory noticed as happening naturally in the forming of teams.
@CaldeiraG I'm probably one day going to switch from being a 'consultant' to just a dev too. I just want to postpone it a little until I have my own place and gotten into a comfortable financial routine there, so it will be easier to estimate the effects of giving up or acquiring extra benefits.
Idk I never felt part of a team. Even when playing a team game which I absolutely hate. To me, you have friends, enemies, and you have circumstantial allies.
@ArthurHv 'Feeling part of a team' is also very different from 'being part of a team'. I am a part of the teams I work in... but the work I done is done on such an individual level that it's indeed a bit harder to 'feel' part of a team. That feeling mostly happens when work is spread across multiple people, and one can't do their job without the other doing theirs... and everything goes right :)
@Tinkeringbell It's interesting because it shows how inconsistent business expectations can be at times. "We want well defined responsibilities for everyone but we also want you to do the other's job when they don't because you're a team" kind of bs
@ArthurHv Eh, I can live with both of that :P They want me to stick to my tasks, but they also want me to take on my co-worker's when he's on vacation. At that point though, rule nr. 1 (stick to your own tasks only) is no longer applicable :P
@Tinkeringbell In a sense that is fair, I also do step outside the box if that's necessary, but let's be clear, I do it because I also want the credit for it
@Tinkeringbell To me it's more complex, because if I didn't I would do voluntary work anyway. I enjoy socializing at work, and doing something useful, but I'm not dumb when it comes to money. I reason in shares. If you make profit I want a share that reflects my investment.
My sister is putting her 4 month old son into unusual (but safe) situations I disapprove of. (think things like baby pageants. it isn't that but it's similar.) I want to take an interest in my sister's and nephew's lives. Is there a way I can do that without encouraging the behavior I disapprove ...
@Tinkeringbell Do you consider being a moderator a volunteer job in this context or not? It fulfills your requirement that you prefer doing on your own schedule because it is asynchronous, nobody expects you to be checking in nine-to-five :D but still, it is something to do, I mean, like a job isn't it?
@Tinkeringbell Oh they absolutely do, Tinkeringbell = best moderator ever on SE :3 please print this message with my compliment on some fancy paper, go shopping with this and see yourself! Using real money wouldn't buy you any comparable amount of awkward giggles, uncomfortable smiles and embarrassing laughs :D
And these messages about shipping costs remind me of a joke: a drunk man walks into a taxicab and says "to the Acacia Avenue please!" the driver responds "we already are at the Acacia Avenue!" and the drunk man shouts "wow, it was so fast, amazing! How much for the fare?" the driver says "nothing, we didn't even go anyw..." and drunk man doesn't even wait for him to finish, he only yells in enthusiasm "wow, and how cheap, too!" as he exits the taxicab :D
