1:53 AM
terrible awkward silence

2:16 AM
well if the name fits....
literal tumbleweed blowing down the street....
dog was seriously confused.

2:46 AM
Good night and see you at the evening.

5 hours later…
7:52 AM
morning

morning

3 hours later…
10:53 AM
hi
I said "see you at the evening", but it is actually still a few minutes of morning left now!

11:11 AM
(quietly laughs at 10 past midnight....)
(vanishes into the witching hour, and bed)

These New Zealand witches and their strange hours...

:P

@lila You're very early! But you're always welcome, no matter the time of day XD

2 hours later…
1:18 PM
"We know there are things you're good at and would love to do"
"So, show me one"
"Ehh, well I don't have any concrete examples right now"
^ My meeting summed up in three sentences.

Geez

but but, why even schedule it
XD

@CaldeiraG It's one of those 'team building' meetings. My company likes team-building, in your free time of course, and I've been sorely lacking participation XD
The philosophy behind it is the 'team wheel': teamchange.nl/the-team-wheel-six-team-success-factors , particularly the 'initiative' part.

@Tinkeringbell interesting
don't have a team so no team-building :)
> Het is okay
i assume cookies?

@CaldeiraG Yep, cookies!
@CaldeiraG You're blessed :)

1:26 PM
@Tinkeringbell and cursed :P
gotta do 2/3 people work at this point XD

@CaldeiraG It's an interesting theory... but not much more than that. If you have a team of consultants that are all working on different projects for different clients, that's a whole different team than the team that works together daily. I feel this wheel is much more applicable to day-to-day work than to 'spare time team building'

I don't like team-building theories. When you use the word "team" you utilize social groups as a a way to an end. Contrary to social group being the end. Like you do using the term social capital.

improvised DBA, if any app on my office breaks i gotta fix it (to avoid lengthy tickets to helpdesk), microcontrollers, network analyser XD
@Tinkeringbell agreed
and most importantly
a dev
that's what i've been hired for :P

@ArthurHv I like the theories... but as just that, theories about how teams form ;) The problem with team-building theories is that they are often used to develop team-building frameworks or practices that try to enforce the things the theory noticed as happening naturally in the forming of teams.
@CaldeiraG I'm probably one day going to switch from being a 'consultant' to just a dev too. I just want to postpone it a little until I have my own place and gotten into a comfortable financial routine there, so it will be easier to estimate the effects of giving up or acquiring extra benefits.

Idk I never felt part of a team. Even when playing a team game which I absolutely hate. To me, you have friends, enemies, and you have circumstantial allies.

1:32 PM
@Tinkeringbell understandable :D

@ArthurHv 'Feeling part of a team' is also very different from 'being part of a team'. I am a part of the teams I work in... but the work I done is done on such an individual level that it's indeed a bit harder to 'feel' part of a team. That feeling mostly happens when work is spread across multiple people, and one can't do their job without the other doing theirs... and everything goes right :)

> one can't do their job without the other doing theirs
made me giggle a little bit

@Tinkeringbell It's interesting because it shows how inconsistent business expectations can be at times. "We want well defined responsibilities for everyone but we also want you to do the other's job when they don't because you're a team" kind of bs

@ArthurHv Eh, I can live with both of that :P They want me to stick to my tasks, but they also want me to take on my co-worker's when he's on vacation. At that point though, rule nr. 1 (stick to your own tasks only) is no longer applicable :P
@CaldeiraG That would be awesome :)

@Tinkeringbell In a sense that is fair, I also do step outside the box if that's necessary, but let's be clear, I do it because I also want the credit for it

1:39 PM
@ArthurHv credit = paycheck. Sure, same here ;)
(compliments don't buy stuff)

Yea I mean raises

:D

@ArthurHv The money is the only reason I have a job ;)

1:57 PM
@Tinkeringbell To me it's more complex, because if I didn't I would do voluntary work anyway. I enjoy socializing at work, and doing something useful, but I'm not dumb when it comes to money. I reason in shares. If you make profit I want a share that reflects my investment.

@ArthurHv I enjoy doing something useful too. But I also very much enjoy doing so on my own schedule ;) You're right about the profit though.

5 hours later…
6:33 PM
Morning all!

Hi good morning (for me it's actually evening).

timezones :-\

6:57 PM
@Criggie Good 10-p.m. morning!

Q: How can I take an interest without encouraging behavior I disapprove of?

BarneyMy sister is putting her 4 month old son into unusual (but safe) situations I disapprove of. (think things like baby pageants. it isn't that but it's similar.) I want to take an interest in my sister's and nephew's lives. Is there a way I can do that without encouraging the behavior I disapprove ...

7:17 PM
@Criggie Night!

1 hour later…
8:40 PM
@Tinkeringbell Do you consider being a moderator a volunteer job in this context or not? It fulfills your requirement that you prefer doing on your own schedule because it is asynchronous, nobody expects you to be checking in nine-to-five :D but still, it is something to do, I mean, like a job isn't it?

I check in every couple hours thoughout the day and evening.
Depends what time I'm working to.

8:56 PM
@Tinkeringbell Oh they absolutely do, Tinkeringbell = best moderator ever on SE :3 please print this message with my compliment on some fancy paper, go shopping with this and see yourself! Using real money wouldn't buy you any comparable amount of awkward giggles, uncomfortable smiles and embarrassing laughs :D

9:32 PM
grumps My package from Wisconsin went to Chicago for three weeks, and is now in Tokyo, on its way to New Zealand.
(waits-impatiently)
freight cost was more than the contents cost too.

I paid 5 euros transport fees for a 0.40 euros product
I needed a screw. A single screw ;_;

9:49 PM
yeah - in that case I buy a ten or a hundred
Funny story - I bought a house and some things needed fixing. The shower head heeded some tiny grub screws.
So my better three-quarters asks a plumber, who quotes $38 each.
not 38 cents, 38 dollars.
I bought 10 of them for about $4 from a specialist bolt/screw supplier.
talk about markup !

2 hours later…
11:45 PM
And these messages about shipping costs remind me of a joke: a drunk man walks into a taxicab and says "to the Acacia Avenue please!" the driver responds "we already are at the Acacia Avenue!" and the drunk man shouts "wow, it was so fast, amazing! How much for the fare?" the driver says "nothing, we didn't even go anyw..." and drunk man doesn't even wait for him to finish, he only yells in enthusiasm "wow, and how cheap, too!" as he exits the taxicab :D
