Q: With a little work, could this inspire or positively impact others?

Preston BennettThis may be misplaced, but I write a lot of this stuff and though it's very helpful in guiding my journey, I'm not sure how wildly it needs tweaking to hopefully help or inspire just one person if nothing else. If I spend a little time on it, do y'all think these kind of thoughts could be well-re...

I fail to understand what the government considers as "essential online services" cause I very much know Netflix is essential if you like entertainment after work/school
If netflix themselves set this limitation, i guess it's fine
other than that

@CaldeiraG I do think school/work and perhaps online shopping these days should go over Netflix/Spotify/Steam....
If there's enough problems with internet capacity in Portugal (I don't know about that), having the government make sure all its citizens can do their work and have their education first and foremost seems logical to me.

@CaldeiraG This happened in France during the first lockdown and basically, it was just a comm' thing. Nowadays, the limits of the internet are due to the server size, not the cable size. So, given that Netflix doesn't share a server with online school, reducing Netflix "size" is basically useless...

Especially given that Netflix relies on AWS and therefore is based on serverless technologies. Everything is stored at Amazon.

10:36 AM
@Ael well exactly
@Tinkeringbell well true, but you can't just throttle the connection to certain websites just cause it's not essential
if I have a AWS box running something important, is there a right to throttle what I think it's important?

I seem to recall IPS having a meta post where we discussed what to do with answers from the time before the backup policy was solidly implemented... but I can't find the link. Help?

@Tinkeringbell I don't recall having internet capacity issues here and with the money these ISPs get for profit is insane :/
i'm sure they can invest in infrastructure like they have been doing for the past X years

@CaldeiraG Depends ... A lot of 'rights' can be revoked/overruled by the government in case of a worldwide pandemic. We're being told to wear facemasks, to not gather in groups, events are cancelled, we might end up losing the right to be outside at night...

zoom also works with AWS, are they throttling the entire Amazon domain? XD
you get what i mean?

I get it :)

10:43 AM
@Tinkeringbell well yea; I just think that it's impossible to do such measures without having backlash
Funny I say this cause yesterday i got more than 30+ network drops
and during the night too

That's definitely true. People have been lashing out at having to wear a mask, they won't listen to the 'don't gather in groups' and they will have their own parties XD

eventually it just gave up connecting and I restarted the router this morning
@Tinkeringbell true
schools are staying open here (all of them) and both my parents and I have to go to work
it doesn't change much
government also gave allowance for the holidays to travel anywhere and people just before christmas travelled everywhere and stayed on other people houses until after the new year
doesn't surprise we got another peak of ~10k cases
even my mom's coworker got the covid cause her family gathered together for the holidays :/

Numbers seem to have been going down this week, just a little. I think the average nr. of cases a week went down from 10k at the start of lockdown to just under 7k now.

fortunately my mom did the test again and came negative

Schools are closed, holidays were restricted... but yes there's still a lot of people not working from home (surprise, some of the reactions to having the kids sent home from school were that people now no longer work from home and claim having an 'essential job' for having to be in an office and sending their children to the emergency daycare)

@Ael Yep, that's it! Thanks :D

@Tinkeringbell I didn't even use your "search wizardry". I just remembered it "wasn't that old" and search based on that. And I was right, it was only on page 2 of the "newest questions"

Hahaha Oh that's bad XD
I tried a bunch of combined search terms and that answer just didn't pop up XD

Ael
Well, I don't have the pretension to find something using the search box if you didn't manage with that technique yourself :p

Eh, I usually do exactly that for people on MSE :P The problem is often that search only uses AND (and doesn't do OR), so you need to include the exact search terms and not something extra. That seems to cause quite a bit of misses on MSE.

11:27 AM
@Tinkeringbell :/
business as usual

Yeah.
But if things go okay, there'll be snow here on Saturday :D

yay :)
i've seen pics of snow in germany :)

Spain had some good snow this weekend :D

yay
here only ice
0ºC on a few days
there was snow somewhere in portugal
northern perhaps?

South of the Netherlands had some snow too... I think I already mentioned that the police had to write out so many parking tickets to snow-tourists for parking in the wrong places that they ran out of battery power on the devices they use to write those tickets.
It was... I always look at things like how Americans celebrated Joe Biden winning the election or how they storm the Capitol while not wearing masks or staying apart and thinking that it's not as bad here at least... but we are just as bad.
It's frightening to see how little people seem to care and how dumb they're acting.

11:46 AM
@Tinkeringbell xD
@Tinkeringbell :/

It seems that your answer explicitly avoids mentioning therapy directly. Is there a reason for this? I am not sure everyone would get the hint. (Edit: I do think therapy could be a good idea) — user53923 2 mins ago

Ahh! I've seen pictures of that a few times, there's some pretty spectacular kites :D
Now that you mention it I think you explained it before, you need to cut someone else's kite's string?

oh neat festival
still being done despite the virus?

@Tinkeringbell Honestly, you are probably right

Thanks, now we wait what Gauche says or the close vote queue does :)
I find picking duplicates on IPS very hard...
But we're probably 'under'using them.

@Tinkeringbell can't find it either but we agreed on leaving a comment and putting a post notice saying the answer could be improved with additional sources

@avazula Ael found it for me :) It was your question even! :P chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/56743925#56743925

Haha I remembered about as much from the answer, but I was looking for the exact cut-off date it mentioned ;)

Ael
@Tinkeringbell Yeah, that's probably true

Ah yes,this is indeed dependent on culture. I guess OP will know how subtle to be when bringing it up. Of course, be careful about how and when you bring up therapy in any case, she needs to feel like OP is truly trying to help her, not like OP is just "tired of dealing with the situation" (I am not saying this is the case, but it is easy to make her feel that way regardless). — user53923 20 secs ago
