10:47 AM
hi

11:02 AM
morning
Oh no, afternoon :D

11:16 AM
What a beautifully boring Saturday, there's nothing to do!

Speak for yourself :P I just finished vacuuming the entire house and cleaning the bathroom/toilet when I replied, and I'm expecting more chores this afternoon.

I want to tell you an interesting thing to make it less boring: how the artificial sugar substitute, sucralose, was discovered (from Wikipedia):
"Sucralose was discovered in 1976 by scientists from Tate & Lyle, working with researchers Leslie Hough and Shashikant Phadnis. While researching novel uses of sucrose and its synthetic derivatives, Phadnis was told to "test" a chlorinated sugar compound. Phadnis thought Hough asked him to "taste" it, so he did (!). He found the compound to be exceptionally sweet."
@Tinkeringbell :D

12:15 PM
Morning
@Tinkeringbell :P

Next one: Polish!

12:45 PM
@Tinkeringbell And then English.

Hahaha...

:D

It's really, really dirty silver. But I like this chore: I can do it while watching Netflix ;)

<°)///z><
@Tinkeringbell Haha I admit that you really, really did play, twist and confuse my visual perception there. At first I saw it as glass vessel with silver bottom part, then I read "dirty silver" and thought "what? it looks like glass, it's interesting how the lighting of this photo makes this silver vessel look like it was made of glass", then I looked closer on full-size photo and now I again see it's glass.

The bottom foot is silver.
The bowl itself is indeed gladd

12:51 PM
And that is what I see now, but if you squint your eyes and suggest yourself that the whole thing is silver then you will see it, at least I do, just think really hard and focus, imagine that this bowl part is really reflective silver and there is a light source behind you.

This shows a tiny bit how dirty it is: The black-ish spots on top are basically the color of the entire thing right now, while the silver is what I just polished into existence ;)

1:05 PM
By the way there is a cleaning method for silver that uses baking soda and salt solution with aluminium foil.

I somehow doubt mom is going to allow that.
Elbow grease and a silver polish cloth it is ;)

It creates dissolved aluminium ions which are not entirely harmless, so maybe mom is right.

6 hours later…
6:40 PM
[crickets chriping sounds]

2 hours later…
8:11 PM
I have to make an embarrassing confession that I mildly addicted my not-so-bright self to nasal decongestant, and it's even more disturbing because at current time it is not politically correct to have a blocked or runny nose :D

8:26 PM
How do I suggest to a 21 year old that they should read "12 rules for life"?

8:40 PM
@skullpatrol Maybe you could first suggest them watching a few videos with Jordan Peterson's lectures which are about these topics that the 21 year old relates to the most, I cannot suggest because I don't know the person in question, but I assume you know them good enough to know which videos would be the most relatable, then mention the book and if they liked the videos they will be interested in checking out the book.
I mean not full lectures, but these a few-minutes-long highlights.

Thanks @lila
Should I provide more details and ask on the main site? @lila

9:03 PM
Personally, I don't like how he rambles on in his videos...

Oh you're welcome, I'd say yes you could ask this, but I'm afraid my advice is worthless, I hang around in this chat because it's one of the most active ones, but I actually don't even have an account on Interpersonal Stack and I'm not familiar with the policy on which questions are considered good and which are not :D the only site I'm familiar with is my site of origin Pets.

Maybe you could wait for someone else who is more familiar with IPS to answer this but unfortunately this chat's activity greatly decreases during weekends, I also recall that this site has something like a sandbox f

Here's the sandbox for questions.

Thanks @JacobB

@skullpatrol No problem :)

His book is 260 pages of wall after wall of text :(
so, I'm figuring that I'll have to help them along by reading together?

9:12 PM
@lila my mom uses some sort of product to polish silver and others
it does a good job

Ael
9:29 PM
Hey there @skullpatrol, welcome on IPS chat :)
If you want to ask this question on IPS, you should also include why just saying "I think you should read this book" wouldn't work.
Also, as lila said, using the sandbox first could be a good idea
In any case, you should probably read this before posting your question: interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/3224/…

10:28 PM
@CaldeiraG And I also think using a dedicated cleaning product like this is the best, but the intriguing thing that happens in the video I linked to is that the heavily tarnished silver just cleans itself before your eyes without you doing anything, the tarnish disappears revealing shiny metal without any scrubbing or even you touching the coin, it is a chemical reaction and the tarnish actually doesn't simply disappear, but gets reduced back to metallic silver.

10:51 PM
@Ael will do, thanks :-)

@lila yea

11:12 PM
@CaldeiraG All of the silverware in my home has always actually been not made of silver but stainless steel instead, we aren't that rich, or maybe it's that my mom has always been thinking that the manner in which silver tarnishes is unsightly and doesn't look quite right.

@lila :P

:D
I have to admit this was the first Saturday since a long time that hasn't actually been that boring, I mean in the context of the chat; quite a lot of people talked quite a lot.
