Q: How can I convince my roommate to not to go out due Covid-19?

AmericaMy roommate insist on going outside home. At first he agreed with me on not going outside, and going outside only once a week to buy the basic things. But he is the kind of person that cannot stay at home for too long and hence got desperate and afterwards decided finally to go outside 5 days a ...

6:45 AM
@Magisch Morning! :)

7:05 AM
we got issued a certificate to pass because of job necessity today

So you have to bring a certificate to go outside now?

they're expecting a full on france style lockdown next week, so they issued us a certificate to come to work to show to controlling police officers

it's a coming, whether next week or the week after, the spread aint slowing down

We should hopefully see a flattening of the number of infections in the next few days, given that the first measures were put in 2 weeks ago.
If not... well that would suck :(

7:09 AM
india has put 1.3 billion people under lockdown for 20 days meanwhile

I would say I love the idea of a lockdown... but there's also so many people saying it won't work, because it means that when the lockdown lifts people start travelling again and the virus will return in no time...

I think a lockdown only works if we'd do it worldwide :/

a lockdown only works if you're prepared to do what china did: hold it until the infection numbers die the hell down. That means 2 months or more of complete lockdown at least

@Magisch And the first asymptomatic person that now goes to visit China causes another lockdown? I'm not too worried about e.g. my neighbor infecting me after a 2 month lockdown. I'm worried about someone that travels without knowing they're ill starting another wave of infections.

@Tinkeringbell iirc they're only lifting the lockdown very slowly and partially, only people with approved regular negative tests can go back to work, and so on
seems like they're going all in on "we won't let our people get this thing" no matter the economic cost

7:24 AM
I hope it works out for them...

The US is supposedly taking a different approach

@Magisch Eh. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/… is an interesting piece...

trump wants to loosen restrictions and go back to normal before easter to save the american economy

@Magisch The US has the real life version of annoying orange to guide them through this. My heart goes out to all those that didn't vote him into power :/

there was an interview yesterday with a vice governor who said nobody asked him and that he as a old person would be fine to die so the economy can be saved

7:27 AM
Well, if it takes only 1 death to save the entire economy, that's very noble of him. When's he being dropped into an active volcano? Can they hurry up?

this was in the context of arguing that all should go back to normal and a uncontained pandemic would be better then the economic consequences of a prolonged lockdown or social distancing

They might be... I guess we'll never find out though.

I dont know. A lockdown basically pushes the economy off a cliff, all but guaranteeing a prolonged depression to rival the one in the 30s. But no lockdown might also do that. Hospital system collapse and rampant rises in death rates aren't just going to have no effect

True... It's picking between two evils :/

I talked to a friend of mine who works as a nurse yesterday
it's real bad, even here, already

7:35 AM
Yeah, stories are rife here too...

he's been doing overtime every day, they're running out of PPE hard, some of his coworkers have already gotten sick, not just with corona, because they lack PPE now and can't just stop treating patients
he reckons his hospital is about 2 weeks from having to make really ugly decisions

Yeah, and in the meanwhile we have a Dutch company (Philips) that can make ventilators... but they've been smart enough to put their factories in the US so probably no ventilator will ever reach here :/
I've heard stories of all PPE here being gathered in central places... and people breaking in those places to steal it.
A great-aunt of mine was visited by someone that just visited someone with corona. At least that got grandma to realize she should stay home for a while and limit visitors, so we got to take her groceries.
So far everyone here is still healthy, I hope it stays that way

@Tinkeringbell oh yeah, at my friend's hospital they had to put in additional security because someone took off with several boxes of disposable gloves
stealing PPE from a hospital should be a felony

stealing already is, right?

stealing gets you a fine most of the time here
I'm saying stealing PPE in a pandemic should have much, much harsher consequences

7:53 AM
Well I pretty much agree with that...
So should hoarding anything, for that matter.
But morals aren't gonna fix this :/

Mornin!

Hey :)

mornin

8:09 AM
Heh. This way it almost feels as if you're at the office XD
Random people saying good morning to you :P

I'm actually at the office
although it is eerily silent

Yeah that must be strange...
Are they taking good care of you there? Cleaning stuff and such?

eh
we have soap and are encouraged to keep 2m distance from each other, wash hands after and before going anywhere thats not our workstation, and to absolutely minimize physical contact and wandering around the office
breaks are staggered now, each shift ends 30m before the next one starts, break rooms have been closed so people are supposed to eat at their desks only
no way for management to get masks, PPE or hand sanitizer right now, it's not available for purchase
everyone is on edge that the company might have to close or lay off a lot of people. Business is fine-ish for now (all our work and orders from automobile customers are gone but we get more work from medical device manufacturers and their suppliers now)

@Magisch That makes sense, but it sounds like they're at least doing everything they can...
@Magisch Yeah, I've heard more of such stories.. Fingers crossed things keep going okay.

:( pretty much the same at the office here except the break rooms are open

8:20 AM
@Tinkeringbell How's your company doing?

people seem to have isopropyl alcohol for those that have to do other stuff than sitting in a office chair xD

Texas' lieutenant governor suggests grandparents are willing to die for US economy (Note, that is not sensationalized, it's the article title)

Pretty much okay, though some of the parts, that work for e.g. aviation are taking a hit, other parts are really busy... It's a really, really big company with really, really varied clients so it's expected to make a full recovery.

They also have this kind of mlm where they encourage employees to buy stock, so even its stock prices haven't dropped as much as with other businesses, apparently.

so yesterday I forgot my work phone at home and today an update came up on the phone and forgot the pin of the sim (-‸ლ)

0000?

8:28 AM
nah, it is the original one that came with the SIM card
and I don't have that with me
I really never turn off the phone
k, blocked it now lol
rip phone
i need the puk which is even harder

O.o I think you might want to wait until you're home to try further unlocking ;)

yea :)
i turned it off

9:03 AM
@Magisch Still there are people nor following this. Police got all powers to keep people at home.
> The total cases reached 100 on 15 March, 250 on 20 March and 500 on 24 March.

9:51 AM
Yeah, doubling every 4-5 days is about average, I think...

@Tink the next popular crochet idea: A hand sanitizer
@CaldeiraG Think of ten random four-digit numbers
It's probably not those since you forgot it.
#Logic

10:07 AM
Makes me almost want to go to biology SE and ask what a real COVID virus looks like.

Aw, what a cute little virus

No wonder it spreads fast
People are making extras.

@Tinkeringbell Well, we can draw crude portraits of it, but it never really counts as seeing
So draw it as a gremlin

Heh. There was this pretty funny dutch twitter thread that made fun of the media for using totally different images of this virus....
Ever since, I have it in my mind that I want to know what it really looks like ;)

Well, let's say we were too small to be "seen" by a cosmic being. If their supermagnifier looked like our electron microscope, we'd look like a messy pool of stuff

10:14 AM
Okay. I'll stick with imagining cute amigurumi or nasty poisonous green spiked balls then :P

@Tinkeringbell The former, sure
The latter looks too fantasyc . . . fantastic . . .
fanstac Never mind

fake :P

@M.A.R. :P

is there any country that delivers groceries and grains at home ?

Zootopia

10:20 AM
well 1.3 billion in India are in a lockdown and who knows who'll get us milk/ flour/ veggies

You should have learned to photosynthesize

it's raining now
(:

It's sunny on here \o/

Your funeral

@M.A.R. is near

10:21 AM
@ankii It's called online shopping and yeah it's a thing almost everywhere?

It's a grey day here, not even rainy
@ankii geologically speaking

@Tinkeringbell nope, Walmart & amazon haven't expanded here yet

many supermarkets have a delivery service

@ankii We don't have walmart or amazon either (okay, we've had amazon for a few weeks now but that's not used for groceries).
shrug you'll be fine.

It's 2020 and you're telling me you can't turn bricks into pizza?
I thought everyone knew it. Basic chemistry.

10:24 AM
Put it into the microwave
should do
/s

Microwaves are so 2012.

"“From tomorrow vegetables, milk, fruits, medicines and other essential commodities will be delivered to your doorsteps, for which we have identified more than 10,000 vehicles. These include 4,500 PRVs of police, 4,200 ambulances of 108 and 102 apart from these government vehicles will also be roped in for the purpose.”"

A microwaved shoe is delicious though. Don't ask me how I know that

@ankii Authority forces delivering groceries?

did you know our govt made a comic for kids ?

10:25 AM
@ankii Corman?
His weapon of choice is Dettol

the comic is actually not bad
I like it

That sounds almost as dumb as a guy wearing glasses for disguise

@ankii Sounds good. No longer wondering if the person coughing at you in the supermarket is spreading a deadly disease or just a heavy smoker (which is just as gross, but not deadly at least).

The father has a cape
Is no one going to mention that

10:30 AM
@Tinkeringbell the veggies are also touched many hundred times by people, when they pick up the best ones
@M.A.R. capes are bad
mr incredibles reference

Also a transmission vector

they get stuck in fans
or plane engines

Yeah sure . . . Death

@M.A.R. my yeah sure moment was when NKorea said they had 0 cases

I wonder if they could have drawn him any more terrifying if they tried
Read "Do you recognize me?" in Dormammu's voice
@ankii But that also means they stop the spread of the virus

What do you think of rephrasing this into "is there an etiquette of [doing this thing I don't know how to describe] in Asian female tour managers?

Meh...
It may help... though I don't know how much.

In all honesty, I don't think it's a real issue
seems to be some sort of 'prank' or funny moment to post on social media
There's no record of it happening to OP

Comment posted. :P Perhaps it needs more details now? :P

11:40 AM
yay :)

12:14 PM
Ok, so my govt allowed ISP's to limit traffic on websites, however it's not a really a issue for me because I'm already using a VPN; Youtube is severely degraded before this rule anyways

12:32 PM
@CaldeiraG cough
Call me Nostradamus because I told you so :p
(That wasn't hard though, we've had the same 2 weeks ago)

I think over here Netflix, Youtube and Disney switched to sd quality (instead of hd), and playstation is limiting download speeds... sounds like it's still better than over there though!

12:47 PM
Fun fact I learned yesterday. (For context I work for a real estate company that offers a couple of different services depending on whether you just want to sell, just want to buy, or do both). We have an enum in our code that is used to mark what service a particular customer is using. When our design team does market testing on a new service offering, they make mockups using some fake company name (changes every time).
The value that gets added to the enum (and is used for lots of variable names, etc...) is the name of the fake company used in the mockups rather than the service type.
It's a good company to work for, but good grief they've made some weird tech decisions in the past.

o_o

if thats your worst problem right now you should be sunbacon :D
(I was trying to work this pun into a joke for the past 3 weeks intermittently, this is the best I got)

hehehe, I like it
I would say that's a great name for an alt account, but it might defeat the purpose of an alt account

one of my coworker's surname is Nickel and her cat is called copper "Kupfer" in german

For some reason I feel like I've heard "kupfernickel" as a word before

1:00 PM
Thats the name of a copper and nickel alloy

That would make sense
Or I guess I should say "Ja, das stimmt"

I feel hugely demotivated. I never thought I'd need social contact to keep going but apparently I do. I ask myself tons of question about my career, I don't think that's too good.

I'm missing petting the office dog
sounds quaint but I only now realize how much the dog was doing for my general happiness

1:15 PM
@Tinkeringbell allowed now, it wasn't supposelly legal before
but my youtube is switching to SD on normal network
even 720p looks terrible
after the wonders of 1440p

@ArthurHavlicek Go video call a coworker. Even if it's just a coffee chat, it works wonders :)

@Tinkeringbell Oh, gave me an idea. Ill propose pair programming. I could be teaching some code while giving me a reason to keep going. I love these sessions

@ArthurHavlicek Pair programming is very nice! :)
@CaldeiraG Wasn't it? I know that on the trains over here, wifi was always limited (things like spotify downloads and netflix streams have always been 'cut off')
(Of course that's not on the ISP side)

1:35 PM
@Tinkeringbell never heard of such thing but with the unreliable networks anyways
I would need to join one to check because there's no information on the website past 'free wi-fi'
their captive portal should have the terms and conditions

2:25 PM
+633 totalling 2995 / + 10 deaths totalling 44 :(
pretty sure it's the biggest increase ever on confirmed cases

@CaldeiraG don't sweat it
People always like to say how something's natural, like it's supposed to be good.
Unfortunately, the natural thing now is for charts to look like cliff slopes

not saying it's good
it's pretty bad

So you're going to see worse, and worse than that, until the numbers lose their meaning

well yea

@CaldeiraG Patients: 6412 (+852), Dead: 356 (+80)
But apparently our numbers seem to be 'flattening', and the next few days are going to be crucial in proving if that's true.

2:30 PM
It's good to hope, but not too much though
Ours has been trying to flatten for quite some time
People see +800 new cases instead of a thousand, and they go crazy like "ZOMG it's flatteningz!!1"

Last week, we had around 350 new cases on Wednesday. The last two days have been in the 800's, the 4 days before that were around 500/600

Stats don't work that way
This is our stats
Not exponential growth, but not flat either
So stuff will happen. "Want"s got nothing to do with it

0 serious looks kinda suspicious though

Not suspicious, I guess they just don't report that

I see

2:34 PM
Every country has its own method of counting things

@CaldeiraG Some stats are just not available. We have apparently 1 known recovery, the rest is all closed as 'dead'. So our percentage of deaths closing cases is 99.9%.
That's because our healthcare has better things to do than babysitting people to see if they recover.

@Tinkeringbell oof :p
plus people at home

Ours is admittedly cumbersome and error-prone, but I've seen no other argument than "they're monsters" to prove they're lying in their stats
That doesn't mean it might not be missing quite a few folks in that count, but our healthcare is stronger than an isolated sanctioned country's should have been
Our recovery rate is also suspiciously high, because I suspect they're being too eager on letting folks off, but I'm no expert

2:54 PM
How many days does it take for a young person ?
In 20 to 30 age group with no pre existing condition ?
Not seeking medical advice but still

@ankii From first symptoms (mild cold, perhaps a fever) until 24h after you've coughed for the last time.
That is, excluding incubation time but apparently you're not contagious then.

1 hour later…
4:06 PM
Oh, I went to eat
@Tinkeringbell that is informative but I meant the recovery

4 hours later…
7:46 PM
@Tinkeringbell except you are
This COVID is frustratingly dangerous because those who don't show the symptoms yet can transmit the virus, unlike SARS and lots of types of flu
If any new discoveries have been made since then, I dunno
