Q: How am I supposed to gain an audience/customer database with two empty hands?

Joncarlos KovacI'm not saying that it's impossible for everyone, because some people clearly do make it. However, it seems impossible for me. I've been at step #1 for 20 years: I have two empty hands and no audience/customer database. All the countless guides and books and videos and advice out there assumes t...

Finally. A day of working from home. I'll be here slacking ;)

TGIF!

Yes, very very much!

Blegh, Mondays.
Yay, Fridays!

I like working from home. I get to sing along with the music :D

9:24 AM
@Tinkeringbell That must feel good :)

Yeah :D

A: How to press a touch sensitive elevator button without touching it

LosManosUse a pomme frite. I have only tried with hot or luke warm pommes frites but see no reason why it should not work with a cold. You can make them at home or buy them at a shop; then keep them in a small box in a pocket. Make sure the box is tight and does not leak oil though, as pommes frite...

XD
I also love how that keeps talking about a pomme frite instead of a fry :P

:P what a unusual answer

A 'true' lifehack if you ask me :D

I would say so xD

That reminds me... tonight it's fries on the menu here :D
Another good thing.

9:35 AM
nice :) i'm currently in a keto diet, no bread allowed ;p

fries aren't bread! :P

yeah but it also has high carbs xD

You can get the happy meal with carrots then :P
Also... my brother is learning to be a programmer now too... this is fun, he's sending me crappy programming memes :D

9:53 AM
@Tinkeringbell Link him to reddit.com/r/ProgrammerHumor :P
@Tinkeringbell yay, carrots!

@CaldeiraG Nah, I'm keeping that one for myself if he hasn't found it yet, so I can stay the funny one :P

@Tinkeringbell ehehe
"Hey people from Linkedin, today we're bored looking a screen doing some stuff!"

I quit Linkedin. I got tired of blocking recruiters from companies called 'ChicksDevelop'
Or other crap like that.

10:12 AM
hey

heh
@Tinkeringbell How often did you get those?

@Magisch One time too many... most often multiple times a week. You could just smell they had some diversity number goal to meet.

I'm not on linked in, but a lot of people I know say recruiter spam is super normal there
you're entirely too principled for the modern capitalist world :P
or just principled enough, depending on how you view it

@Magisch Oh, that I fully realize. And I readily admit that should I ever really want another job... I'm probably going to use my boobs and LinkedIn to find one quickly.

10:16 AM
I would never hold it against someone to use every opportunity they have available to get a good job and salary
in these cases I would blame the companies for being reprehensible, not the employees who use the system they set up

XD
Given my habit of complaining about being a token woman, that was sarcasm ;)

heh
I would take being a token hire over not having a job for extended periods

Oh true but it's never fun.. and also not good for your career.

Uh, anyone getting a Not secure warning on this page? On the main chat page it doesn't happen

Nope.
Oh wait, yeah.

10:25 AM
:o

I'm seeing it in all rooms I'm currently in though.

yeah, same

Go post on MSE. ;)
Though I can't remember if chat ever was secure.

I think that's non https images
on a related note, I would find a company name like "chicksdevelop" rather sexist if I were a woman

@Magisch Yeah. It's... 'we need more females programming so let's segregate into a special company!'

10:32 AM
in a "i'm a professional software developer, not a chick" kind of way

It was some woman's private pet project. Last time I checked it was luckily 'on hold indefinitely'.
Guess there's still sensible female people out there.

I'm in general in favor of diversity initiatives when done right, e.g by making education/trials/bootcamps and all that more accessible. More people getting into a profession they're good at and can take joy in is a strictly positive thing

Sure :)

but the overshooting just engenders reactionary backlash and resentment, which runs contrary to the original goals, in my view

That, and protesting a lack of diversity by just setting up your own homogenous group is never a good idea IMO

10:37 AM
and it's not fair that you have to ask yourself if your career is actually your achievment or a quota in a spreadsheet. People shouldn't put that moral hazard on you, it's in and of itself a kind of discrimination

You just get your own echo chamber complaining about how bad everyone else is, with no outreach to those 'others' and no mingling so there's decreased diversity, not increased.

@Magisch That could very well be the issue here
I have a draft here x)

Yet some people gladly just are the quota. I've seen it a good while ago, when some university I think said they would only hire females from now on, until there was some sort of quota reached...

There were seriously females commenting under that news article that they were glad this was being done because 'that way they could get in'... I'm sorry but you really want to get in based on quota instead of achievements? Or do you have such inflated self-confidence that a little introspective into your actual capabilities is off the table entirely?

Not sure if I wanna bug around people because of HTTP CDN's xd

@Tinkeringbell a friend of mine is (her own words) "riding the quota wave" right up into senior management at a health insurer

10:40 AM
ah never mind, the cute cat is not secure! :O

@Magisch Wonderful attitude. /s

not her problem, if you view it from a "I'm looking out for myself" kind of view, the blame is on the employer for being dumb about it

mind, negative discrimination does exist and is quite pervasive in certain areas, but I don't think two wrongs make a right
there's not really a shortcut to developing a proper hiring and compensation scheme

@Magisch Yeah, true... it's just everyone else's problem, the people working under her if she isn't the best qualified person for the job, and the people paying more health insurance premiums when her messes have to be cleaned up...
@Magisch True :)
And I'm happy I have a job, I'm happy I'm buying an apartment, and I'll try to convince my manager that putting me in a female only group is not the way to get me to like the company.
What everyone else does is their business ;) Friends can be chosen after all :P
I just hope that in a decade or two, we won't get a wave of something #metoo like...
But then not about sex, but about having to be a certain person to proceed.

10:46 AM
@Tinkeringbell eh, it's kind of depressing
it's happening in a lot of places
seems like everyone's looking for easy, universally appliable answers and a whole lot of people are just looking to take advantage

It already is yes. And I'm really just waiting for the first case of sueing someone because of a burnout or some other lasting mental health problems because 'they should've recognised I wasn't the right person for the job instead of filling their quota'. Extra sarcasm points if that person can be proved to have had the attitude of 'riding the quota wave to the top'.

turns out reality isn't really all that simple, and correcting bias in a wrong way just opens up the door to more bias. See also: the popularity of the alt right with the youth.
It's frightening just how completly a lot of young men reject the left because they feel (not necessarily are but things like this get a lot of visibility) discriminated against. And where do they go? Right to the reactionaries. looking at 15-20% for the far right party in the next election over here

There's never universally applicable answers. There's always going to be some exception to the rule. We have pretty good immigration rules here... but because some people manage to make their process last a decade or more, and then they have kids here and ...

We get kids that aren't eligible for asylum, but who just disappear for a while. Then, we're worried about the kid's welfare, so we give them asylum anyways... that's not how systems are supposed to work.
People are so, so ready to abuse systems based on goodwill over here :/
@Magisch Yep. I've seen those too. I don't have any numbers but some politicians are just thriving on it.

my question was deleted
what gives

You don't even have an account here. Wrong stack?

10:52 AM
account ?
on chat rooms ?
or on stackexchange in general ?

this is the chatroom for interpersonal skills stack exchange

You don't have an account on Interpersonal Skills, so you couldn't have written a question on IPS (whose site's main chat room this is).
If a question another stackexchange site was deleted, I can't look up why.
You'd probably better try that site's chatroom

@Tinkeringbell We got a problem here in that the conversation is basically people arguing strawmans against each other
nobody is really interested in discussing with each other just to easily defeat the most easily defeatable version of the other argument so we're spinning in circles on a lot of issues

@Magisch It's people not wanting to say 'these are our rules, and they work in most cases, we're sorry they didn't work out for you but if we change them to suit you, we don't have rules anymore'.
I keep out of politics for a reason though... it's mostly baked air here anyways.

heh
it's kind of a tragic irony that the only politician I would actually want to run the country is a person who is not a politician and has no interest in running the country

10:59 AM
Haha yeah.
And I mean, there's plenty of problems to solve... but monkey sounds during a soccer match really aren't a matter of state. Racism is already outlawed, this is something law enforcement or the national soccer association can solve.
Doesn't need a political debate.
Get those people working on climate change, redesigning the state welfare pension funds, the big stuff!
No, instead we're putting that off for the sake of political alliances, and discussing monkey noises!
Or someone's tweets :/

11:59 AM
I've been in a challenge to work today
I maybe replied 10 emails in 2 hours x)

@Tinkeringbell consider that this is not by accident, but by design. Many of the "liberal" and "left" politicians use the rhetoric to gain votes, but very much have to please donors that directly benefit from not adressing e.g income inequality, climate change et al.

12:22 PM
@CaldeiraG That's 12 minutes per e-mail... that's not that much :)
@Magisch Oh, nothing in politics is by accident. :P

1:00 PM
Did someone say political debate!
I've been debating with myself in another chat

@Tinkeringbell on 2 of them I needed to do some stuff and i'm doing a query for another email D:

@M.A.R. I think we wrapped most of it up by now, but feel free to share any thoughts we missed :P
@CaldeiraG I'm having trouble figuring out where a particular equality hash set is being filled, and why at that point one of my keys is unset.
I'd rather take writing 10 e-mails :)

@Tinkeringbell I'm having fun with bitmasks
and finding the eval equivalent of SQL

That doesn't sound too good either, because I understand neither.

@Magisch How's the election going?

1:08 PM
a bitmask is where you store multiple boolean values in a number

@Magisch Because that's exactly what it is?

e.g the number 9 translates to 1001 which means the first and fourth boolean of the set are set to true

@Tinkeringbell Well, here's a thought: Thank God we don't have that here yet. Not too much anyway.

@AJ9 not sure. Very little activity in the chatroom or questionaire, haven't really been asked any questions or complained at in the last couple of days
I'll see the result when I see it, I guess

I missed an interesting discussion and I just wanted to say something about it. I had a discussion with a local recruiter for Django Girls, about 5 years ago. He shared me some interesting point of view about positive discrimination.

1:11 PM
ohh

@Magisch You need an army! Swords win thrones, not words

He's a man. He's convinced that more girls in tech is good. That's his pov.

@M.A.R. either it works or it doesn't. I can't really do anything beside be available for questions
going around chatrooms asking for votes is likely to have the opposite effect

@M.A.R. If you're lucky, it'll come your way at a time when we over here can all argue how 'backwards' that still is :P

And he told me that when they tried to do mixed workshops, they were cannibalized by men, and ended up men-dominated. Some of the girls complained about it and it was completely missing the goal.

1:12 PM
Everyone has their POV. Their POV always sounds nice and agreeable to some, and abhorrent to others. People see the results.

@Tinkeringbell :P

@Tinkeringbell Well, don't be going anywhere, just tying my shoelaces

So his argument is that positive discrimination is a wrong mean to a good end.

@Magisch Negotiations, power tactics, hire Tyrion Lannister!

maybe my sample is tainted by selection bias, but most (not all) women I know find positive discrimination abhorrent

1:15 PM
@ArthurHavlicek OK, that's one philosophical discussion I don't feel like having
In an ideal world, people should be selected based on how well they perform. In a non-ideal world, employers should try.

it is my impression that in addition to other negative side effects that it will disenfranchise quite a few who don't like to be "helped" that way and would rather be compared equally

@ArthurHavlicek For mixed workshops, I might agree on making sure they're actually mixed. You can't really advertise anything as mixed if it's not. But completely segregating yourself into a female only space isn't healthy. You have to work with males, you have to learn to interact with them. Saying there's 20 spots and 10 are for males, 10 for females and then waiting to see who turns up is fine.
That's equal.
Saying there's 20 spots and only females can come, is not.

^ one example of a woman who is evidently not amused :D

Heh. Been doing too much thinking lately, I guess.

beats thinking about bitmasks

1:20 PM
Guess it also doesn't help I still have interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/21523/… around

instead of having a 1<->N sub table, just keep adding to the bitmask because that's totally more maintainable and not a nightmare for the next dev to touch it

@Tinkeringbell In a company you would have to discriminate to reach equality. But anyway. I think my own point of view is a tad more cynical about that.

@Tinkeringbell same situation as before? :S

@ArthurHavlicek Only if you want to advertise your company as equal parts mixed ;)
@Magisch That, and the 'just try to keep it professional' isn't working as well as I'd hoped, she just keeps blabbing to me about her personal life.
She's going through some stuff and apparently I'm the outlet.

joy and fun all around

Q: Friend isn't paying me back small amount of money and I have no clue why

user24249I invited my friends to an event. It was sort of like a Ted Talk. I bought all of our tickets and they agreed to pay me back. Unfortunately something came up at work and I was unable to attend. I was planning on getting the money for the tickets when I saw them at the event. One friend hasn't pa...

And you can also start drawing eyes on glasses, if you wear any

@M.A.R. I'm just on the verge of being blunt and outright telling her that I've been sending subtle hints she didn't pick up, so would she please stop dumping her crap on me.

I take it you haven't become fast friends in the meantime
maybe that's her end goal, making friends

@Tinkeringbell It doesn't sound so bad from your question, is it that bad?

1:27 PM
@Magisch There's easier targets around... we have a new scrum master that's really very friendly and unintelligble due to their accent :P
5 mins ago, by Tinkeringbell
@Magisch That, and the 'just try to keep it professional' isn't working as well as I'd hoped, she just keeps blabbing to me about her personal life.
Mostly the second part needs to stop.

I would just politely confirm what she would say, but I'm not you. I've had few people being insecure about the team they're on and thinking I'm a reverse jukebox, and I did that
Then again, I don't talk much, so when I don't talk it's not that noticeable.
With these polarizing issues, people sort themselves into teams. Some bigger fans go so far as being -ist towards the other side, and the way you say it, it sounds like she's super excited about Team Women

@M.A.R. Meh, I don't want to encourage that kind of toxic 'I'm special' behavior. What we're doing is a team effort, not her and me against the rest.

@Tinkeringbell I'm not female but I have a colleague which talks to us about his electronics pet projects all the f***ing time although we have in the open space clear zero knowledge or interest in that.
Just to say, if you find the recipe then give it to me pls.

@ArthurHavlicek This is about the same though the personal life = personal life troubles, not pet projects. I will let you know what works, though at this point I think the best route might be to just be a b*tch

@Tinkeringbell One other thing that helps is you choosing the topic of the conversation, by speaking first or whatever chances you get to naturally change the topic.
You show interest in talking to them, so it'd become easier to ask for some alone time
Again, this has worked for me, and I'm a . . . an odd guy in real life, really.

1:34 PM
@M.A.R. That's the point though... I don't have that interest! I just want her to do her job, let me do mine...
If I go grab a cup of coffee with someone, she's free to join, but if I ask that coworker what he did on the weekend, we're not going to be talking about her!
She keeps finding moments to just talk at me instead of with me and it's annoying.

@Tinkeringbell well, I just turn to them as politely as I can, and ask for some leave of absence from the mini-meeting. It has worked with guys though.
And there's also that I do share the conversation whenever they have something mildly interesting to say, so when I ask to be left alone, it doesn't come off as hostile. Or at least, that's what their reaction tells me

Also, IRL, I look like an impenetrable wall of wisdom, black hair and beard, black, formal coats, unyielding looks . . . I know it sounds weird but this at least means when I'm not overtly smiling, they take the meaning

I've done that, but I can't excuse myself from every coffee machine meeting just because she's there.

TBH I don't think avoiding her will improve anything

1:42 PM
At this point she should've gotten the point I have no interest in anything but a minimal relationship needed for work.
She doesn't, so I guess it's out with the subtle signs soon.

It's likely to make it worse. They'd try to find you wherever they can, and one day that you're particularly not in the mood, things will go down pretty fast

I'll manage.

What I will say is a bit abstract but if someone craves for attention there is probably no way to refuse that in a way that's not at least to some extent, a bit rude.

Of course you bloody will, you're a mod on meta.SE for God's sake!
And crochet ninjas and smoke bombs
They help

Meh. MSE I can walk away from. If I want to do the same here, I'd have to look for another project and while that may be coming, I want it to be for better reasons than just an annoying coworker.

1:46 PM
Time to draw some blood
Sorry, been reading GoT

I'm just getting to that sweet spot where you know the codebase, so that when people say 'can you fix this' you actually know where you have to look.
I'd hate having to learn a new one again.

@Tinkeringbell So you're facing her, head-on, telling her?
5
A: How to support a coworker with her insecurity, while not going against my own opinions?

TinkeringbellÆlis' answer made me realize that there isn't really anything I can do or say to this coworker that will be a satisfying reply to her, that won't result in me playing the us-vs-them game with her. The answer by EasyDoesIt seems to have much the same message: Play the game with her, give her wha...

Vielen Gluck @Tink (is it the same in Dutch?)

@M.A.R. Nope.

Trying to find a convenient way to type the umlauts

We usually use 'Succes"
No umlauts ;)

1:51 PM
Wow that's, simple.
How can it be simple! (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

Well I had been getting a bit more distance at the time I wrote that answer. It just seems that now stuff isn't going well for her privately, besides wanting constant reassurance about her job she also wants me to fix her private life.
So yeah. Probably going to escalate this by doing it head on.

Succes nonetheless
I wouldn't want to be in the same position

@Tinkeringbell such is the fate of people who appear to have their affairs in order sufficiently

That's dark. Maybe
I'm still parsing that last part.

when you seem like you got a handle on life, people look to you for advice

1:56 PM
Ugh, tell me about it
(↑ an indication that I have a handle. I'm such a humble person)

@Magisch Which is weird because I obviously have not.
Oh well.

I gotta go before my handle gets on fire. BBL!

@Tinkeringbell maybe you do, by comparison

Oh, by comparison I have a perfect life ;)
But that goes for by comparisons with loads of people XD

Q: How to mend a friendship when someone thought I was joking about having a girlfriend?

BooleanSo I was recently chatting to someone who I had not seen for sometime and wanted to encourage them to return to a club that I had often seen them at previously. I went out for coffee with them once, where I stated that I was already in a relationship and had a girlfriend. It is clear that when I...

9:48 PM
I'm ready to stop working for the week, but I have to wait on my build and hope that nobody else merges
:/

Hmm is merge conflict aversion an interpersonal skill?
"NOBODY PUSH!"

I was ready too, but I just got sent a load of comments on my code >.<

@scohe001 That's basically what our releases slack channel is

Yeesh :/

The way our pipeline is set up, when you merge to master it runs a build which creates and pushes a docker image. When your build finishes it starts an integration test run. We have an agreement that nobody is to deploy (we have a manual deployment that pulls the latest image from docker) until there are no active integration test builds
Usually you just kind of wait for a dead spot to release, but once or twice a day someone will drop an @here in slack and call for a hold on merges until the next release
Today had an abnormally large number of those
