Q: How to get friends(s) to confirm for certain if they are attending or not?

user24051I think this is a fairly common situation. When trying to arrange something, some people don't like to commit so they say "maybe". This is a problem, because space may be limited or reservations may need to be made. Here is an example. I would like to go to a concert. I asked a friend who said "...

@avazula I really love it. Can I move in with you? I promise you won't notice me much.
I'm close to water bodies too, so I'm pretty much safe if something happens.
@Belle I don't think you would either, we have five bedrooms! Come on in :D

@Tinkeringbell SHe still tries to hunt in the summer, but she's now old enough she rarely goes out in winter. Just sleeps on my son's bed :-)
Did the maximum mortgage go down this year?
JAD
JAD
hmm
not sure
@RoryAlsop thats a very majestic cat
@Magisch she's a big floof. When wet, she is very skinny :-)
@RoryAlsop Now I'm kinda jealous ;) I want to sleep too :)
14:13
Important news break.
@Tinkeringbell OMG
We should arrange a TAS party to watch that ;)
> Moments later, the bird was shot from the sky.
(Google translated.) Holy crap lol.
Oh, yeah... that was a thing XD
He's now a museum piece ;)
The Domino Day 2005 house sparrow, generally known as the domino sparrow (Dutch: dominomus) was a house sparrow, Passer domesticus, that was shot and killed by a hunter from the company Duke Faunabeheer in the Frisian Expo Centre in Leeuwarden, Netherlands during preparations for Domino Day 2005 on 14 November 2005. With only four days to go until Domino Day 2005, the bird flew into the building and landed on several domino bricks, eventually causing 23,000 of them (out of 4 million) to fall. Because of the protective gaps that were placed between groups of bricks, the damage was limited. Faunabeheer...
Poor bird :(
14:23
Poor domino builders! They had to reset 23k stones. ;)
I would rather have to reset 23k stones than lose my life ^^
> In 2019 it was reported that even almost a decade and a half after the incident, the hunter who killed the bird still received threats to his life.[6]
Yeah, people are crazy like that.
I bet if it had been a mouse caught with a trap, no one would've batted an eye
Probably had something to do with it being an endangered species. But yeah...
I wonder if the people there even knew it was a member of an endangered species.
Wait, not an endangered species, a protected species. Turns out those are the same thing.
Oh I remember that stuff being on the radio. It was so ridiculous. They probably shouldn't have shot the bird, but the response to it seemed over the top.
Especially that -redacted- Ruud the Wild.
14:31
They're a bit different, but yeah... Though nature/animal rights activists over here are generally PETA levels of crazy
At least the prominent ones
@Belle Yeah, threatening someone life is not ok. Especially if the person was just doing their job!
Though, I do blame the people in charge of Domino Day for not having make more effort to trap the bird instead of killing it.

@Tinkeringbell :cough: Oostvaardersplassen :cough:
@Tinkeringbell You might want to be careful with the word "crazy" ^^
@Ælis Meh :P you have people with mental health problems and crazy people. Two totally different categories, I understand ;)
14:47
And yet, people with mental health problems are often called "crazy"
15:05
@Tinkeringbell I really dislike conflict, but I have decided that I shouldn't keep my feelings locked inside and that I should speak up for myself. So here it goes:

Seeing you use the world "crazy" this way hurts. I shouldn't call people crazy just because you don't understand them. People call me crazy for this exact same reason and it hurts every time. I'm not crazy, I'm just thinking in another way than you do. It doesn't makes me less worthy of respect. It's okay to disagree with people or to not understand the way they think. But it's not a reason to call them names. Insulting people
By using "crazy"as an insult, you are propagating the idea that having a mental illness is indeed shameful. And, by doing so, you are preventing people from asking for help when they might need it.
Thank you for speaking up, @Ælis, especially about such a difficult topic.
If anyone wants some further reading, here's a good article: insider.com/…
@Ælis No worries. Speaking up isn't necessary conflict. I'll get back to you, but I first have to finish the last half hour or so at work.

Q: How do you use Instagram to get to know people outside your usual social circle?

Axel TongInstagram is probably the most popular social media that allows you to meet people you haven’t seen before in real life; you normally can contact people within your social circle using other means like WhatsApp or Telegram. How do you make friends on Instagram? My understanding is that a social...

15:59
Why does C# not have discriminated unions? :(
Discriminated unions?
@Ælis Well put. I know it wasn't easy to say.
It's basically a way to say a value can be one of a few types and it's more typesafe than using "object".
@Belle I feel like I just saw someone talking about this recently...was there a HNQ SO question about this? Or am I going crazy
16:04
@brug @Belle Thank you both for your kind words <3
@scohe001 I haven't seen it, but that doesn't mean much :P
Both F# and TypeScript have discriminated unions. They can be super useful. Their use cases are similar to generics. It's nice for when you don't want inheritance. The most commonly used example is a Shape union. All Shapes have a height and a width and an area. Not all Shapes have an area that is height * width.
For a course, I made this presentation. excel sheet though, I spoke on the fly send.firefox.com/download/6c32dfcc7e3f05cc/…
Topics in research on Depression among students
16:21
@Ælis I respect what you're saying here (and I'm glad that you've voiced your opinion!), but "crazy" can also mean "extremely eager, enthusiastic, fanatical, etc..." which I believe Tink was saying there. As in they have PETA levels of eagerness/enthusiasm for what they're doing (which causes them to maybe take things a step too far--which is the connotation I'm getting). Is it the word "crazy" in general that you have a problem with? Or only certain definitions/uses?
@scohe001 I think the link provided by @Belle explain it better than I do: insider.com/…
16:34
@Ælis The link is based on a false premise though, IMO it misinterpreted the guideline it links to to mean more than it actually does.
It says not to use mental health conditions
But to take that and have it become a blanket ban on words like 'crazy' is taking it out of context and too far. Crazy isn't a mental health condition, and it links to guideline saying not to use mental health conditions. While I understand your good intentions, a blanket ban on 'crazy' is untenable in terms of moderation.
@Tinkeringbell I don't want a blanket ban of crazy. I just want you to not use it like that.
If people call each other crazy, I'll moderate. If people call things crazy, well... That's where those meanings scohe linked to come in...
@Ælis I won't make that promise.
I have to go but I want to interject one statement: Words have implicit meanings attached. At one time in my lifetime it was common to refer to undesirable things as gay. Many of the people who defended that used arguments about context and inanimate objects.
Using a term as a form of disparagement has implicit connections no matter if you want them to be there or not.
2
(And even earlier "gay" meant "happy"!)
There's... One lesson I recently learned about communicating. That is, that as soon as people start focusing on how things are expressed instead of what is being expressed, the conversation is better off over. I'm sorry y'all had to see this, I should've stuck with that advice and just regarded the conversation over.
Now. Cat please. As much as I hate being covered in pet hair, seems the room can use one
@chumpbot cat?
Heterochromia!!
It's a mutant ;)
X-cats?
No, it's still very much a cat, not an ex-cat. Not pining for the fjords.
16:56
Hmm I feel like some of my coworkers are definitely ex-cat
You mean expats? :p
@scohe001 Yeah ;)
Glad someone understood :P
Do they knock stuff off tables all the time?
@avazula thanks google :p
@El'endiaStarman more like they only give me attention and the things I need when they feel like it. But I've also seen things knocked off tables lol
Aww bummer lol. ... Any ex-dogs? :P
17:14
Lol I'm not sure what those traits would manifest as in the workplace
Fetching coffee and overall too much friendliness?
Just got back from dinner. About crazy, I think it's okay to use phrases like "the new rollercoaster goes crazy fast!" or "that party was crazy". As long as it doesn't refer to a person or (a person's) behaviour. But that's my opinion and it is okay to disagree with it.
Wait...does that mean all interns are ex-dogs?? O_O
Unexplainable excitement whenever someone mentions the word "walk"?
@scohe001 Probably ;)
@Mithical does 'food' count too? Because then I'm afraid I'm am ex dog too
17:37
We're doing OT at work, mostly waiting for the senior developers to deploy the release scripts while we stand by to work on bugs. It's quite a relaxed atmosphere tbh :)
18:20
The only thing I like about OT is OT like that, and the quiet atmosphere at an open floor plan office ;)
