Hey @Rain! Sorry, TAS opens automatically when I launch my computer but I wasn't really around at that time. I did have a good holiday although I was sick for half of it (it's the curse of vacation, you have to be sick at Christmas :p) How was yours?
06:27
And morning everyone :) Happy new year to all.

@M.A.R. Because it's not your birthday today? :)
Even my bank send me a birthday email :p
It was on Dec 26th
Isn't it sweet. Thank you Google, for invading my privacy and knowing everything about me!

@CaldeiraG Aww, that's cute... What was it, invest your birthday money in stocks? :P

Q: For how long after New Year's Day is it appropriate to wish people all the best for the new year?

TinkeringbellToday is my first day back at the office after a two-week vacation, and so there's a lot of handshakes and well-wishing ('happy new year', 'best wishes') going on. Which raised a fun discussion between me and my co-workers: Some of them completely forget or generally just stop wishing people we...

For the quick Googlers here ;)
@AJ face works too.
@Tinkeringbell I allow for a 3-month margin of error
But that's just me
@M.A.R. 3 months!?
You're definitely on the annoying side of the argument then :P
@Tinkeringbell my personal etiquette says up to the first workday of the first whole week after the new year (so for most people today)
09:50
@Tinkeringbell Until July 7th.
After July 7th, you're definitely in the second half of the year and so it's really time to stop.
@Tinkeringbell If you have a good memory, I'd say you can wish anyone a happy new year if it is the first time you have met them this year. Any time this year. So no cutoff. Of course, by the time it's June or July, it's more of a joke, but still allowed
@RoryAlsop but only people you've met before (last year or earlier), not strangers
@Belle yes, absolutely
@Mithical See, we understand each other
As horrifying as that sounds
So I could send my family members I haven't seen for years a happy new year card in July? I'm in.
10:01
Burn and stain it a bit so it looks like the wisdom of the ancients, forgotten through time, now sent to them in the form of a message from the universe
When men and dragons fought
Wait, I know why dragons went extinct 65 million years ago. The universe told me
Also, is that 66 yet. It's been 65 for such a long time.
@M.A.R. I think it will be 66 in 2021
Nice. Wait.
You were there? YOU WERE THERE?
I've been discovered! -hides-
Nah you're doing it wrong
You're supposed to say something dramatic. Like

"SO WE'VE BEEN DISCOVERED? WE SHOULD ACCELERATE OUR PLANS"
Oh, no, that would make it obvious we have plans. Those plans are a secret.
"WE CAN NO LONGER KEEP IT A SEEKRIT. TIME TO SHOW THE WORLD WHO WE ARE"
"SEND WORD TO HELA I MEAN LADY GALADRIEL THAT WE HAVE A NEW ROLE FOR HER TO PLAY"
@Belle Wow. You're bad at secrets.
@Mithical @Rory I've heard two dates floating around: January 6th and January 15th... Seems @Belle is closest ;)
Makes me wonder how you kept it a secret for such a long time.
Of course jokes are always appropriate :P

@JAD Don't worry, I already have two :)
Your source does seem to mention the 1700's as the time era being discussed though... that rule may be outdated ;)
10:31
It's kinda of odd that probably more than 15 people have already wished me a happy birthday over the Internet and only 3 IRL persons
@CaldeiraG have you told them it's your birthday? :p
@CaldeiraG It's saying something
Now I don't wanna get too dank
@avazula atleast my closest group of friends should know this, we're friends for about 6 years roughly :p
@CaldeiraG I've learned over the years that remembering birthdays is overrated. My relatives can't understand why I would remember theirs. I'm not sure any of my sisters know mine. Some of them think I'm 20, others think I'm 30 ... :p
Oh that reminds me
Happy new year!
Phew. I made it to the deadline.

A: For how long after New Year's Day is it appropriate to wish people all the best for the new year?

OldPadawanThis answer is based upon the etiquette I've been taught and always heard since childhood. Its rule have been followed for decades by people I know/met, and I've seen it used in Western Europe countries (Belgium, France, Germany1). The Netherlands being so close to those countries, it might apply...

> 1. when in England,
Do as the Brits do. Exit.
10:38
@M.A.R. lol
@avazula :p well, people just don't have a good memory either, i have my facebook birthdays synced with Google just in case
I can remember people when they truly forget about it and somewhat close to me
JAD
JAD
@Tinkeringbell I can tell you at least that it's not appropriate any more to wish others a happy 1700.

UK ads are fun ads are not fun though
Hahaha lidl!
They got a bunch of critique over here because their advertisements talked about 'feestdagen' (holidays) instead of kerstdagen (christmas days) ...
Sometimes people really do not realize that's it's easier to make stuff for the whole of December (Sinterklaas, christmas, new year's) as holidays instead of different labels for each period :)
We have such serious problems in the Netherlands... srsly
12:37
@Tinkeringbell These issues are all very serious. Like the maximum speed reduction. It's an assault on our national identity! /s
@Belle And what about the name of our Eurovision Song Contest participant? Apparently it starts with a J!

13:51
@avazula It was good, but lots of long travel. I'm glad to be back to a normal routine now
14:02
On a second thought, we might also turn this one into a 'global' question, like mentioned here for example... but then every answer should include some geographic/cultural context. If any people actually prefer that, feel free to let me know either here or in Interpersonal Skills Chat. — Tinkeringbell ♦ 2 mins ago
Thoughts?
Might as well start the discussion myself :P
14:49
QotD: If you could choose one piece of entertainment--a movie/video game/tv show/book/etc--to completely erase from your mind (make it as if you never experienced it), what'd it be and why?
@scohe001 Bible. I'm curious to see what I'd be like had I not been raised religious ;)
But only if I do keep my memories of who I was before I forgot the book, otherwise it makes no sense. Then I'd pick some kind of movie I really liked when I first saw it (night at the museum perhaps, or the librarian), just so I can experience discovering it again.
@scohe001 Possibly Cats, though I also like Tink's answer
@Tinkeringbell dang, I really like this answer. That's deep.
Although classifying the bible as "a piece of entertainment" might ruffle some feathers :p
XD
You were the one that said books were entertainment :P
And it's not that deep, it's a thought that crossed my mind quite regularly lately, so it's on the surface :P
@Rainbacon oof I've heard bad things about that movie. It was bad enough to use your one wish to erase from your mind forever?
14:55
The avatar movie. I'd like to forget that exists entirely please.
@Tinkeringbell I was expecting to learn about your favorite book series that you'd love to be able to re-experience for the first time again. Instead I got some insight into your internal struggle with religion. Definitely deeper than expected at least :p
@scohe001 It was really bad, but let me think about whether or not I can find a better one
Plot? Acting? CGI? Or just the premise in general?
@scohe001 All of the above
@scohe001 Well you got that too ;)
15:00
The things that stick out most to me are: the fact that the cats all had human hands/feet. They tried to CGI away the rest of the human anatomy but then went out of their way to give Taylor Swift human breasts. There's basically no plot and at the end Judi Dench breaks the 4th wall to explain that cats are not like dogs
@Belle Which avatar movie? The one were people are blue or the one with the "master of air"?
@scohe001 Probably a movie that I liked at the time but where I later learned that the person who made it/one of the main actor is a terrible person (a rapist or something like that)
For now, I think I would just erase "Pirates of the Caribbean" because of Johnny Depp
@Rainbacon That's about everything from what I've seen from the reviews ;)
@Rainbacon Why is everyone talking about CATS? On Portugal it only was released a week later and it has a terrible imdb score
@Belle +1, probably one of the masterpieces of '10 :p
@Ælis The latter. The series is amazing. It's probably my favourite tv show of all time, but the movie is the worst thing I've ever seen.
@CaldeiraG The easiest way I can explain it is to quote my wife: "I feel like it's going to be a trainwreck, but I also feel like it's one of those things that I have to go see just so that in 20 years I can say that I was there for that"
15:14
@Belle I never saw the movie, so I can't judge, but I know a lot of people share your feelings (I did see a trailer though, that was enough for me :p )
@Rainbacon So it's bad :p
@CaldeiraG Very
Everyone loves a good trainwreck :D
@Rainbacon Well you just saved me 7€ to see a trainwreck :p
Not that i was going to see it but i was curious
@CaldeiraG its on my "I'm probably going to download it and watch it one day, when I am super bored" :D
15:18
@Rainbacon yeesh. That unfortunately sounds like exactly what I'd expect from seeing the trailers :/
@Ælis dang does that happen that often?? O_O
@scohe001 Did you miss metoo?
Oh I guess that's a good point. That part of my brain is still in shock trying to process it all
Geez I didn't expect this to get so deep and dark. I though y'all would want to re-experience your favorites, not forget all the stuff you hated lol
JAD
JAD
@Rainbacon hmm, the 4th wall gets broken in the first song. At least in the musical
@JourneymanGeek :D
Is Cats like so bad it's good or bad bad?
JAD
JAD
15:24
@Belle so you have good movies, then you have bad movies. At some point movies get so bad they become good again. This is beyond that and way in the bad part again
@Belle yes
@Belle it's so bad they had to hotpatch it
JAD
JAD
relevant XKCD:
@JAD I don't mind a good breaking of the 4th wall, but the ending of the movie was not a good breaking of the 4th wall
JAD
JAD
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@scohe001 I've decided that I'll let cats stand and instead choose to forget Miranda Sings which is easily the "entertainment" that I find the most obnoxious
15:26
Cats has a higher score on IMDB than the Star Wars Holiday Special, though
@Rainbacon in which case the cat is likely to sit
@Rainbacon oof yea that one makes sense.
16:06
A similar but different question: what's the weirdest (SFW please) thing that woke you up?
Uuhhhh does an air raid siren count?
That's not something that has ever woken me up before, so I guess so. Probably terrifying.
this morning I got woken up because the cat sneezed on me ._.
Not as terrifying as learning that you've slept through one.
@Belle me thinking(?) that I am falling
16:10

For me it was my brother shouting at 3 am when I still lived with my parents. He had come home from a night out and found a homeless person in our shed, stealing our empty bottles
@Belle pidgeon crashing through a bedroom window

@CaldeiraG it's Monday here! Happy Birthday!
@Belle Nothing. I sleep through everything. I slept through an earthquake.
@Tinkeringbell did it actually get in the room?
16:13
@brug I slept through someone hitting me with a pillow to wake me up
@Mithical But I doubt I could sleep through one of those.
@ankii That's every morning. Ask my wife.
I've also woken up because there was a cat on my face in my own house. I did not have a cat.
3
@Belle okay that is weird...
@Mithical Ooh, yeah. I slept through gunfire once. My parents said it sounded like there were bullets hitting our house.
16:15
those are some really cute one liners lying around.. let me pin one of them on the wall
@Mithical ask @M.A.R. if he had any similar ones
@Rainbacon I mean apparently I slept through someone putting a BB pellet through our window as well
@Rainbacon where was the gunfire happening ?
@ankii In rural united states
Ducks ? or like real life fight
@ankii Monday here too and thanks :D
16:25

@Belle Me falling from the highest bed of my bunk bed. It was very painful. It took me several weeks to recover fully (I had a very "nice" bruise in a kind of uncomfortable place but I could still sit on my other buttock, so that wasn't as bad as it could have been :p )
18:51
@ankii Uh, what do people is going on here?
Christ, Iran is not Afghanistan.
My awesomest waking up was because of an earthquake.
Although I have slept through countless others

@Rainbacon you should tell your code that there's no such thing as a bad query, just bad code :p
I thought my old manager had just forgot to cancel our 1:1 calendar entry, so I stayed at my desk coding, but no... now I feel rude >.<

Q: He says He doesn't want me but it feels He loves me when with me

forkyHope my question isn't off-topic in this forum. I have a problem being in a kind of relationship with someone who told me he didn't want me and that I should have a new year's resolution about letting him go. It is most of the time me who arranges to meet up, so it seems he isn't missing me. But...

Well, they aren't the safest, but they are really convenient when you need more room.
@ankii sounds like my freshman dorm room setup in college
@ExtrovertedMainMan Oh, now you are interrupting too, aren't you?
although it had a ladder, not stairs
interruptions for everrrryone :D
@EmC at least you had a single room for yourself
20:24
@EmC Yay \o/
:p
@ankii nah, that year I had a roommate :)
the other years it was a "suite" setup, so 5-6 of us shared a living room / kitchen / bathroom but had separate bedrooms
We have 3-2-1-1 roomie count setup here
4 bathrooms 4 toilets for 30 people
Then for 20, then for 10
@ExtrovertedMainMan Title sounds like some generic song lyrics
@EmC It kind of makes me sad when I hear that total strangers have to share the same bedroom for a year (or more). I believe that anyone deserves to have a private room for themself
Well, they're only strangers in the beginning
20:27
@ankii Ouch, for 4 bathrooms for 30 people is really few. Some might not have showered a lot.
But there's also quite a lot of ways a good relationship with a random guy won't work
@M.A.R. Still, they never get to choose with whom they are sharing their room with
yeah, I don't miss the dorm room experience.. but, I was lucky to have a very nice roommate (we ended up living in the same suite all the rest of college)
@Ælis some used showers after returning from classes, midday. Although classes were divided such that only half had to wake up early
my university had a forum where people looking for roommates could post their preferences and such, so it wasn't totally random. of course, there's only so much you can tell from just online posting ;)
20:29
y u no liek me roommie
Oh, you can learn a lot!
Also, random distribution of students in hostels made sure that the class shift arrangement works for everyone.
If people are being themselves
@EmC Well, that's indeed better than nothing. In any case, I'm glad to hear that you got along well with your roommate :)
:)
20:31
Ooh, a Russian emoji ;)
q:
@M.A.R. my freshman year of college was very educational.. "why does the floor above us smell like skunk". haha
No, Russian emojis are like)))))))))))))))
@EmC people living above us just make a lot of noise
So do the ones beside me. Idk why tap on the wall with a pen when you can chew it
Or is it MARs code ?
