Q: Needy friend uses me to avoid his parents, how do I tell him no?

SciborgBackground I have a friend whom I have been very close with for a long time. A few years ago, when we were in high school, he came out to me and told me that he did not want to tell his parents, as they are very homophobic and would hurt him or kick him out of the house. Obviously I promised not...

Insomnia is so much fun (no), I only sleep 3h tonight (but hey, it's only 5am, maybe I will sleep more...)

Yo!
Sunday is a chill day
Does anybody know some way to force https in Safari on Mac?
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ No AC in most houses here, including ours. Though my parent bought a small mobile unit yesterday for the attic, so my brother can sleep in his own room instead of crashing in mine ;)
force https?
HTTPs needs to be set server side ._.
Like my institute is on both website.com and website.com
uhm. pfft. doing it wrong.
Many other also do the same, FF and chrome prefer https while opening such sites I guess.
07:35
Also, almost suggested you try the main site, then I realised this is the IPS chatroom
which is odd
http ://example.com and https ://example.com are actually different sites
boo
but you set http to redirect to https
@JourneymanGeek Where?
On the server ;p
Haha but I am not a server man
I am the client man
http://hci.cs.wisc.edu vs https://hci.cs.wisc.edu
Both open and former shows "not secure" in address bar while latter doesn't

Q: How to refuse a dinner with my relatives?

WarriorI have never been close to one of my relative. The only living thing I like is my dog. We are having dinner tomorrow with a bunch of relatives and friends. My dad will pick me up at 7 pm but I don't want to go there. The issue is all of my relatives believe that it is necessary for a person t...

@Ælis With a sock account. Just make sure you have absolutely no interaction between the accounts.

For any weekend Stackers, I just saw this video and couldn't help but think of IPS. This makes me want to write a self answered question around this topic!
Only 7 ways I'm ruining a conversation? That can't be right.

@NVZ Anon feedback (which IIRC is one of the factors used) means pretty much nothing for most SE sites.
I'm thinking it'd be mostly random, with hints at popularity.
statisticians have discovered the optimal strategy for ranking things that have received upvotes and downvotes. Indeed. So can devs please implement that as an option for answer-sorting on individual questions? That's been a feature request before: as an answer to the FGITW problem (currently with +581 score) and as its own question (strangely with a -3 score). Other sites have implemented this and their signal-to-noise ratio has noticeably improved. — Mr. Bultitude Apr 12 '17 at 12:23
Huh, what sites? SO kinda sucks at the moment but AFAIK the rest of the internet sucks more.
Except kitten compilations on YouTube.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ It is sometimes useful, though not many people use it. But it can show discrepancies with HNQ voting, where 101 rep can only vote down anonymously
More people should vote, whether their vote on that site is anonymous or not ;)
@Tinkeringbell That's a fun thing to know probably, but would mostly be a rough indication of . . . controversy maybe?
@Tinkeringbell Since you are here this needs comment and only a mod can do it: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/a/22258/21067
Like if a post is one of those phobics. Hydrophobic.
(it as been bugging me since I saw that it was deleted :/ )
"only a mod can do it" What is this, a Tolkien book?
16:17
@Ælis Can you put a custom flag on that, so I don't forget? I'm on mobile and about to go soon again too ;)
@Tinkeringbell Isn't there an auto flag raised?
@Tinkeringbell Are you of the mod blood, mod kin? <Eastern European accent>
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Yeah, but it's much easier to delete a 100 scoring post for not meeting guidelines and just being popular opinion if there's 200 anonymous downvotes XD
@Ælis Only for questions

Heh, I read it as "how to defuse a dinner with my relatives"
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ nah. Though effective moderating runs in the family, both me and my brothers moderate online stuff ;)

@Tinkeringbell Oh, didn't know that. It's a bit of a shame IMO but, in any case, I flagged it :)

I wasted a lot of time because I had commented out a stupid line which supposedly sends a acknowledgment to the client for further communication. It is literally c.recv(1000) long .
I discovered this while comparing to previous version of the same file

@Rainb "How Telling The Truth Will Save You - The Radical Honesty About The Source Of All Human Stress" - this title is utter rubbish. Finding a new house/flat can be stressful. Dealing with illness and death is stressful etc.
Telling the truth about it being stressful can make it easier to cope, but that does not in any way make it less stressful
I think it was an hyperbole
but ok
Yeah, getting past the clickbait title... On a video about being honest... The idea is, well, yeah, being honest about yourself to yourself and others is a very good idea
Although not everything he's saying is entirely necessarily right - it's back to this 'just be yourself' thing, in a way. You are who you 'perform' as, is some sense, using the words he's using in the video. Of course you're going to behave differently around different people - you've got different sets of shared experiences with those people
'we all think before we speak' :'D
I kinda feel that what he's trying to get at is something good and reasonable.. But also just not always right. The world is grey - sometimes you can feel angry for no reason other than having a bad morning and telling your boss that you're angry at something they did, when perhaps normally you wouldn't be angry at them, is just going to be counter productive
20:18
@Mithrandir24601 oh, that's why the author of that book stopped being "Radical Honest"
there are blogs about it, like how in some countries, being radical honest, is just suicide.
@Rainb Yeah, considering other people's feelings matters. If you're absurdly lazy, just being honest about being absurdly lazy is much worse than pretending you're not and in the process of pretending, actually stop being lazy. It's too easy to prod holes in that video :P
20:32
@Mithrandir24601 I used to think that, if every one was being honest, we would have far less trouble. Then I found myself in situations where being honest was dangerous for me (and where being honest backfired really badly for me). Now I believe that being honest would still save people a lot of trouble, but you need to know that the other person is openminded in order to do so (cc: @Rainb )

Q: How to break off contact with someone without hurting their feelings?

SociallyAwkwardIdiotSo, I got myself into a weird situation... About two weeks ago, out of mostly just curiosity, I joined an app for meeting people. It can be used for dating, but it's not pitched as it's primary purpose. A few days later, I got a message from a girl. If it's relevant she's 21 and I'm a 22 year o...

@Ælis I just left a comment but please consider leaving a comment of your own when you delete vote if there's none yet; mods really shouldn't have to be reviewing recently deleted answers to make sure users are getting feedback
