4:00 PM
@avazula I don't think today-me would like the kind of Christian I suspect I'd be if I was a Christian.
@ElizB Food makes everything at least a little less awful! xD
@avazula I haven't gotten a new one just yet but I'm still gonna be a .NET developer.
And, crap guys, I'm gone for like half an hour and I missed so much! ;-)

@TheTinyMan well, if that's what you like the most, yay! :)
@TheTinyMan I somehow get what you mean

@avazula Yep! xD

@avazula Cool :) fist bump
@TheTinyMan yeah it's like I know my dad all too well and i'm just too sure that something is gonna happen
plus my dad doesnt know my sister is pregnant with a second kid already

@ElizB From what you've said about him I don't doubt it for a minute!
@ElizB Oh, that'll be fun.

@TheTinyMan Yeah haha
@TheTinyMan yeeeeeep I warned her that if he found out he'd promptly kick her out

4:10 PM
@ElizB Wow, that's awful. :-(

@TheTinyMan he's just that kind of person.
I found that out when my sister asked if it was okay that I bring her and come in his house to help her get stuff from her bedroom but he got all huffy and said no, because poor him has been victimized so much because we're ghosting him and being cruel to him all that crap
i think of it as saving him a butt whooping if i keep my mouth shut
it's just not worth it to go at it with him

@ElizB That sounds like a wise choice.

@TheTinyMan thank you i think so too

4:26 PM
Weeeeh! I ordered the food :D
Now let's hope it's actually edible :P

@Tinkeringbell Hehe, keep us up to date! :p

"Turns out, this is the kind of thing that's edible once."

hehehe

Q: How to make a new trainee feel comfortable at lunch?

ÆlisToday, one of my coworker "tasked" me to eat with the new trainee (so that she won't eat alone since my colleague wasn't available for lunch). I wanted this person to feel comfortable so I started to ask questions about her studies (what are you studying, how long will e your internship, what do...

@Ælis Right now, it's mainly taking very long to arrive :P
I regret not just getting out the fryer and making fries now ;)

@ExtrovertedMainMan Also if anyone has advice for how I, as someone who hates eating socially, can be more comfortable in the trainee's role, I'd love to hear that. xD

@TheTinyMan You have to get a job in one of these companies:

ate just now. Feeling better if not a little drained. I'm also supposed to start my cycle today so feeling bleh

@ElizB Booo for bleh. But yay for food!
@Alex Can I get that on a T-shirt? :-P Except I don't mind food, just not, you know, sitting down to eat socially
Oh, no, I want that on something easily removable like a button
and then I could put it on the wall or something, and when someone cute was around I could say, "sorry, snacks like you aren't allowed!"
Slang is weird. :-p

4:51 PM
@TheTinyMan For some reason the same google search with just the additional "shirt" has almost all the results about farmers.

@TheTinyMan Social eating can be fun and anxiety-inducing for me lol

@Anilla I'm never sure how to hold my face or how to hold my shoulders or if it's okay to slouch or if the tone of voice I'm using is okay or if I'm gonna make a mess on myself or if I'm eating too much
Plus I have to hear the person I'm talking to in the restaurant and it's usually loud and there's motion everywhere and I want to see all of the motion or I get paranoid and I have trouble understanding the spoken word anyways

@TheTinyMan I know how ya feel. Some food can be really messy and ya never know if all of it went in your mouth lol. And yeah the sound can be really distracting too. It is fun to have a giggle though when whoever you're eating with accidentally has a food mess (and ya know them well enough) :P

@Anilla I'm clumsy! Any food is messy food if you're clumsy enough! ;-)

@TheTinyMan very true. spaghetti is very dangerous for me! If you have a nice date/friend they might help you clean up though haha. I've had good and bad memories with social eating :P
Worse thing is accidentally spilling your drink :o

4:59 PM
@Anilla (#^.^#)
Hm, there were more characters than what showed up there...

Lemme guess...asterisks? Ah yep, things got bolded.

Yep. Any idea how to escape an asterisk? * didn't work.

By the way, you can backslash-escape asterisks and underscores.

__

@Anilla On someone else? xD

5:00 PM
_hi_

\*demonstrates\* -> *demonstrates*

:o

*test*
but (*test*) didn't work?
well what the heck? Did I accidentally use the wrong slash?
(*^.^*)
guess I must've

@TheTinyMan Uhhh noo all over the picnic table! lol

Yup. / != \

5:01 PM
@El'endiaStarman Haha, of course, I just thought I used backslashes, but I might not have. xD Brain farts and all that.
@Anilla That's not as bad as spilling it all over someone else! I mean, unless help-cleaning-up happens. xD

@TheTinyMan Have you spilled something on someone else before? Haha

Gets awkward if I'm on a date and I spill something on the waitress and help-cleaning-up happens though... :-p
@Anilla Only a few times?
Most of the time it's just embarrassing little drips of sauce or something on my shirt that I had no idea was there until later
Or, "this burrito fell apart so badly my hands are just covered in food now"

@TheTinyMan Ohhhh no. I know whacha mean about food falling apart! Burritos and some sandwiches man... they just don't stick together lol
American food especially is realllllly messy

(hey "help cleaning up" was an innuendo, right? :-P And/or describing titillating behavior or situations? xD )

:D

5:06 PM
xD

@TheTinyMan now my cycle is bombing my head, looks like it's time for me to head home and rest, i'm not finishing any work at this rate

@ElizB Oof, that really sucks. :-( Are there painkillers that help?

@ElizB Oh dear. Sorry to hear that

Naps and maybe ibufropen. if needed. Most of all I'll have at least two more mugs of tea
I'm drinking a kind of tea that's called "total body" its supposed to help with this sort of thing

@ElizB The right tea can work absolute wonders!

5:08 PM
I've never heard of "titillating" before @TheTinyMan I'm gonna add it to my vocab lol

@Anilla It's a good word, I like it! Let's hear it in a sentence, just to test you! ;-)

@TheTinyMan Uhhhh, hmmm. "Despite being amidst the bustling crowd, I managed to titillate a young love interest by stroking their hair with my fingers." idk lol xD
I used the verb form instead :o is that allowed?

@Anilla I'll allow it. ;-) Well done, especially for having been put on the spot! :-P

@TheTinyMan haha yeah. putting me on the spot there. I'll prolly remember the word now xD

@Anilla I'll be sure to try to put you on the spot more often, it seemed to work well! ^.^

5:18 PM
The first time I encountered "titillating" was in the context of clothing (or lack thereof, rather) revealing almost everything, but not quite.

@El'endiaStarman I think it seems fitting there? But it almost seems like too weak a word for that to me somehow.

@El'endiaStarman gonna make myself a bowl of frosted minis :)

Hiya, @Catija!

:D

@Rainbacon Wait, what? That's not an answer-in-comment.
Or am I confused? Do we rate all of the traits observed by the bot?

@TheTinyMan absolutely. I need that for sure. Probably gonna go with another blend thats called anti strain

It was explained to me the other day that tp and fp have nothing to do with the regex that tripped them but only with whether the comment is useful
tp means this comment should be deleted, fp means the comment is useful and should stay

5:42 PM
@Rainbacon Oh, interesting. I had no idea.

You can read the transcript here

@Rainbacon Cool. Thanks for letting me know! Yay for learning things, I'm doing a lot of that today! ^.^

Then it's a good day
(but not so much for me)

@Rainbacon Aww :-(

Gonna have that tea and a shower. That should help

5:46 PM
@ElizB Enjoy! Showers are the best! ^.^

@TheTinyMan yeah especially when it's really needed. :P

@ElizB So many awful jokes... :-p

lol

I just tried to make coffee without putting grounds into the machine. Is it 5 o'clock yet?

heh yeah you might want to put grounds in there

5:58 PM
@ElizB Or teabags!
That would be the best prank...

Oh, that's evil.
Fill teabags with coffee grounds.

lol yeah

@El'endiaStarman No! No, you're a bad man! None of that! xD

Ensure that you are out of state before the prank is discovered.

@El'endiaStarman Like moved out of state, with no paper trail!
Probably a new identity! >.<

user15026
6:05 PM
Yeah, you'd definitely have to change your name after a stunt like that or they'd find you ;)

hahaha yeah

@ElizB You'd have to change yours if he did that, too. New handles and everything! :-p

haha

I've always wondered, CAN you just make coffeebags? Like, for the coffee drinker on the go?
Which I feel like most coffee drinkers are, but I don't know, I'm not one of them xD

@TheTinyMan Unless I did it to her. Actually, now that I think about it, I'd just be dead, so nevermind.

6:08 PM
hmmm, accurate lol

user15026
@TheTinyMan Apparently:

Q: Why isn't coffee commonly sold in sachets, like tea bags?

apaulI was wondering why single serving coffee sachets never really took off the way tea bags have. The only explanation I could find was that steeping coffee too long makes the coffee taste bad, but it seems like that could be avoided by removing the bag. Why would the end result be terribly differe...

Wh...there's a COFFEE stack exchange?

@TheTinyMan Our coffee machine at work does accept bags actually

@Ash interesting.

user15026
6:09 PM
@TheTinyMan apparently! I googled "teabags for coffee" and ended up there!

There are a lot of stack exchanges these days. One could easily put way too much time into SE

@Ælis food is eaten. It was okay. The mints that came with it were better though!

@Tinkeringbell What'd ya have? Coffee?
What I've gathered from that answer makes it sound more complicated than just "put tea bag in water, let steep until at desired strength"

@TheTinyMan Delivery food. First time getting that, was fun :D

@Tinkeringbell First time getting delivery food? Like, ever? :o

6:15 PM
There are a lot of stack exchanges these days. One could easily put way too much time into SE

@Rainbacon Gasp! That could never happen! :o

I wish the mobile experience was better. Then I could do SE stuff while on the go

@TheTinyMan Yes...

@Tinkeringbell Oh, wow! That must be exciting!

I can understand though. It's waaay too expensive for a family of five ;)

6:17 PM
@Tinkeringbell Haha, yeeeah, I can see that

@Tinkeringbell How much does it cost to have it delivered?

@TheTinyMan hahaha. It was kinda fun to order, less fun to see we had to wait 45 minutes. Then the food arrived and we had fun eating it :)

compared to if you went to the place and bought it?

@Rainbacon I just spent 37 euros on food for two people

@Tinkeringbell Also a lot of fun: giving the delivery person fun extra instructions!

6:19 PM
If you went to a place, you could probably get that, and fries, and drinks for the same money

Yeah, that's about what we pay to go out to a restaurant and order (including tip and whatnot)
Does the Netherlands do tipping?

@Rainbacon Not like the US no. It's either a 'keep the change' kind of thing or a compliment for outstanding service, always just a few euros. Also, not applicable for food delivery as this was paid up front

What kind of food did you get?

Spareribs

yummy :)

6:22 PM
oof

Hmm, you might have actually paid less than I'd have to. I've never ordered spareribs, but I think they might be more expensive than that here

suddenly I become aware that I have skipped lunch

I'm sorry. we can go back to talking coffee ;)

user15026
My lunch break isn't for 2 more hours :/

user15026
:P

6:23 PM
Nope, the damage is done! :-P
now I have to come steal your ribs

@TheTinyMan I haven't been hungry for the last week. I've been eating, but I haven't been hungry

It came with a swag package too!

@Rainbacon Stress response? :-\

I think so

Napkin, toothpick, salt, pepper, a wet wipes, a sticker and mints!
@Ash What's for lunch today?

6:25 PM
Hahaha, I love it when a meal comes with wet wipes...I keep those around because you never know when you'll need an emergency wet wipe! Especially if you're a messy eater like I am!

I'll bet you're not, though, somehow...

@Tinkeringbell Would you do it again then?

user15026
@Tinkeringbell I grabbed one of my frozen containers of leftovers, so it's either fried chicken and french fries, or it's barbecue chicken and red rice.

@Ælis Maybe, but not soon.
@Ash sounds good :)

user15026
Yeah, either way I am gonna be happy.

@Tinkeringbell Interesting. I still hope I will soon have the opportunity to have food delivered to me like you did. I always see that happen in US shows but never had the opportunity to try it
(And trying it alone doesn't count)

6:36 PM
Interesting. I just decided to go through the motions of ordering a pizza for delivery to a random address in the Netherlands...it's a different experience. There's no delivery charge or anything unless that's just baked (no pun intended) into the cost of the items?
Also why do zip codes there have letters at the end??
I also like how honest it was at a certain point. "Please enter your address so we know the prices at your local store."

In the US companies try to hide the fact that that kind of variance exists from us. >.<

@TheTinyMan if they did that over here, they'd likely get complaints for false advertising
@TheTinyMan delivery can cost money, it depends on where you buy and how big your order is. I paid 2,5 euros for delivery tonight

I think the technical term is "price segmentation" - offer the same product but at different prices depending on X, Y, Z conditions.

@TheTinyMan to narrow areas down even further :)

@Tinkeringbell I guess that was a silly question, huh? But why letters and not more numbers?

@TheTinyMan no clue :P

6:45 PM
Screws with US-based addressing systems that expect 5 or 9 digits for the zip code? :P

@Tinkeringbell Like do the letters mean something specific, something that communicates information better than a random integer? I have to know (but not enough to Google it xD )

@TheTinyMan I don't think so.. ours are just DL, nothing more, no hidden meaning
Perhaps they allow more combinations than numbers

Oh wow, the Netherlands doesn't have SS, SD, or SA as postal codes because of their association with Nazi occupation
I was wrong, I've Googled it xD
"The first two digits indicate a city and a region, the second two digits and the two letters indicate a range of house numbers, usually on the same street." Quoth Wikipedia.

@TheTinyMan That sound sensible, the same system is applied to license plates

I wonder if US zip codes have that kind of meaning too? I've noticed that most codes near me start with the same digit.
urgh I'm not getting any work done xD

6:49 PM
@TheTinyMan Well, now you know more about the Dutch zip code system then I do!

I also know that I want to eat this "Chili cheese and beef" pizza that I started to order. :-P

Go get work done, then order one locally

Yep, the .com site says "we just need to know where you are so we can find your nearest store." No mention of pricing differences at all. xD

Hahaha poor you ;)

@TheTinyMan Zip codes are definitely mostly clustered and, I think, roughly ordered with respect to what places were settled first (i.e. all the 0xxxx and 1xxxx codes are in the northeast).

6:53 PM
@Tinkeringbell As I'd feared, no options locally with chili :'(
@El'endiaStarman That makes sense :-)

According to Wikipedia, the first digit identifies a group of states. The second and third digits identify a specific postal hub within that group of states and the 4th and 5th represent a subsection of the area that hub covers

@Rainbacon Ahhh, neat! I feel like I used to know that, haha.
Probably when I was working on input validation for zip codes.

user15026
This got me to look up how Canadian postal codes work, it's more complicated than I thought :P

@Ash Oh yeah?

user15026
A Canadian postal code is a six-character string that forms part of a postal address in Canada. Like British, Irish and Dutch postcodes, Canada's postal codes are alphanumeric. They are in the format A1A 1A1, where A is a letter and 1 is a digit, with a space separating the third and fourth characters. As of September 2014, there were 855,815 postal codes using Forward Sortation Areas from A0A in Newfoundland to Y1A in the Yukon. Canada Post provides a free postal code look-up tool on its website, via its mobile application, and sells hard-copy directories and CD-ROMs. Many vendors also sel...

user15026
7:08 PM
IT's kinda like "province then sorting area then city/section of city" kinda but not

@Ash Neat! :-)
One of these days every ZIP code will just be a GUID

Why not just assign a GUID to each address?

@Rainbacon Oh, we'll do that too

Guh because then how would anyone remember their address? Or type that into Google Maps :(
A GUID for a phone number though...that I can get behind

user15026
GUID?

7:16 PM
Globally Unique Identifier

It's a data type that's supposedly universally unique, made up of like 36 hexadecimal characters

Oh I always thought it was Generated UID. Globally is probably better tho
I was probs thinking GUI
Nope wait that's graphical not generated. My whole life is a lie now

GUI is graphical user interface

Written like 123e4567-e89b-12d3-a456-426655440000

don't forget santa's postal code in Canada which is H0H 0H0

7:18 PM
The idea is that there are so many possibilities that if you randomly pick one you're almost guaranteed to pick one that's never been picked before
@Crosscounter Wow, seriously? xD xD

for kids to write letters, and "Santa" (canada post employees) write replies
sorry in case I spoiled the fun for anyone in this chat

GUIDs are 128 bit numbers under the covers, which is 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,455 possible ids

user15026
@TheTinyMan Yep!

@Crosscounter You kidding? That's way more fun than guids :P

@Crosscounter Hope @Anilla doesn't see this then! ;-)

user15026
7:24 PM
As a Canadian I can totally attest to how that's real :) As a kid we always sent a letter and got replies :)

@Ash That is a-mazing!

user15026
I liked it because it meant I got mail of my very own

@TheTinyMan Hahaha I actually never believed Santa existed xD parents tried so hard to convince me but it never worked lol

@Anilla Ah, well, I couldn't assume for someone so young! ;-) They couldn't even convince you when you were a child?

For reference, if you started generating GUIDs at the start of the universe, with a 3GHz computer processor, it would have generated 0.0000000000038% of the possible GUIDs by now

7:31 PM
@TheTinyMan No xD so there was this glass door on the fireplace at my grandma's house and I put a piece of paper on it that would fall when Santa apparently opened it to drop off the presents. Never happened. Santa vs. 6 y/old science didn't work lol

@Anilla Wow, color me impressed! Did 6-year-old you come up with that strategy entirely on her own? :o
I first heard of that kind of strategy for detecting entry when watching Death Note at, like, 21ish, and thought it was the cleverest thing I would never have thought of :-p

@TheTinyMan That I don't remember. My childhood memories are very blurry. It could've been possible I saw it on the telly. Idk lol

It's crazy how parents leave extensive media/digital trail of their kids' childhood now compared to when I was growing up. I am pretty sure my 2-y.o. niece has more pictures than all my siblings combined

@Crosscounter Pictures are cheaper to create now than they used to be

that's true. I have a little album of my kid days, and there aren't any digital files. all prints

7:48 PM
@scohe001 "THAT'S FINALLY GETTING AN 8TH SEASON ahem I mean, it could be any TV show, right?" Ahah XD

LOL I couldn't resist :P

It's less than a month away!

@Ælis I has such a confuse. O . O

I knowwwww my SO and I are super excited!

@TheTinyMan Well, that's the problem when you aren't allow to chat in comments :p

7:50 PM
Haha I think this is the right place for that anyways :P

@Ælis I choose to interpret this as meaning that Steven Universe is getting 3 more seasons. ^.^

@TheTinyMan If only :'( (but at least there will be a movie next!)

@Ælis I know many people who are dead-up certain that there'll be one more season. I admire their optimism. :-p

@TheTinyMan I wish it would be the case, but the show seems to have a solide end with no unresolved mysteries right now :/

It's been oddly talkative in here this afternoon. I like that.

7:55 PM
Uh oh...don't jinx us

@Ælis One of my friends insists that there are dozens of unsolved mysteries, but...hmm. I'm worried about spoilers now. :-p

@TheTinyMan Don't worry about the spoilers, I want to know what thoses mysteries are! (Also, I know I don't remember spoiler when I don't know the TV show, so I think other people will be okay)

@Ælis Ehh, I still don't like talking about spoilers in public chat rooms :-)
I don't remember what the loose ends they were referring to are either

Have y'all ever wondered if dragons are super jealous that we can make water with our mouths?
2

@TheTinyMan Fair enought. In any case, I don't thing those "mysteries" are what I call "big ones", the ones that want to be resolve. People tend to remember those kind of mysteries
@scohe001 OMG! Oo XD

8:01 PM
@Ælis Haha, maybe :-)
@scohe001 O . O Mind. Blown.
Wait, can't they do that in most fiction too?
Mind unblown. ;-)

LOL shower thoughts for a Friday afternoon
Can they? That kinda ruins it then :/
I would think the whole fire thing would evaporate any saliva they might have

@scohe001 I mean fire dragons definitely seem to drool sometimes when they see nice tasty sheep or something :-p
Haha, well, not if they're not actively breathing fire!

Booo and here I thought I was clever

I mean I could be wrong :-p

Also just noticed that edit @Ælis, thanks for that!
@TheTinyMan pshh when is a Tiny Man like you ever wrong?

8:05 PM
There might be different kind of dragons. The ones that do acid and the one that do fire (and maybe some can do both?).

@scohe001 I mean it's been at least 30 minutes, you're right.

@scohe001 You're welcome ^^

@TheTinyMan lol was it a big wrong though?

@scohe001 It was "Damn, this is why I pissed away the last 12 work-hours, because I made an incorrect assumption long ago" wrong
Okay, my NP (who is one of the people who insists that there are plenty of plot hooks left in SU) actually has some really, really good points :-p

Whelp. At least you got it out of the way before it turned into 20hrs?

8:07 PM
@scohe001 That's fair :-p

8:52 PM
It looks like the consensus on meta is that we want back on HNQ. We've got this question to discuss parameters for that, and it's been suggested that we should possibly ask a few more. What kind of consensus are we looking for on those parameters in order to pull the trigger and go back on HNQ?

@Rainbacon I believe we are lacking a clear concensus on how much question we want to start at. So I guess we need people to vote (!). For the rest, I don't think people are ready to say "this shouldn't go into HNQ" (unless if the question isn't clear enough, which mean that it would be close-worthy)

@Rainbacon I guess for now, we're mainly interested in seeing that question split up. You can skip the regex too, like Catija said, the CM team will monitor that.

9:22 PM
Ok, I'll try to work on that sometime this weekend

Take your time. I'll ask the other mods some questions about HNQ return this weekend too :)

1 hour later…
10:47 PM
Got my little box of surprises from Stack Exchange! Yay!!

user15026
Yay! Fun mail is best mail.

Yeah, got a bunch of little things- two water bottles, notebooks, stickers, @El'endiaStarman got a Raspberry Pi shirt, (he really liked that!) a strange extendable flashlight, a code review rubber ducky haha

user15026
I am curious about the flashlight lol

yeah it was extremely funky lol
we can take a video later
oh and a mug that says
if (owner.isCoding()
&& mug.isEmpty())
[mug.fill('coffee');]
i'll just replace coffee with tea :P

11:04 PM
They need to make a tea cup lol

haha for real

Oh shoot. I haven't had any tea today... I need to change that!

user15026
@ElizB I like that.

user15026
@Anilla Most definitely, tea is important!

@Ash What's your favorite tea (the one you drink most often)? :o

user15026
11:21 PM
@Anilla A tea I can only get in the States called "Constant Comment", it's black tea with orange and spices. I make my husband bring me some every time he visits.

@Ash Ooo, I might try it! I'm lucky I live in the States rn haha

user15026
Excellent. It's pretty easily available at grocery stores. It's in a red and black box.

Amazon sells big boxes of it. Idk if they do international shipping though :P

user15026
I had trouble finding someone who would ship here last time I checked

Ohh hmmm. Which country do you live in btw?

11:33 PM
I think my favorite tea is this lavender blend that I've got ^.^ I should go look at what's in it...

user15026
@Anilla I'm Canadian. :)
