@Rainbacon Flagged. I hope that person is okay or if they're spamming that's not nice... can't tell which.

Q: Asking a retired soldier about their experiences

AnillaI know an elderly guy through a volunteering program that helps charities. He seems rather kind but I don’t talk to him often. I know when he was younger, he served on the American forces and helped fight the Second World War. Though, he doesn’t really bring it up much beyond that. Given some ...

Q: How do I deal with this kid who is really creeping me out in class?

JodastFor reference, I am a 17 y/o male in my Junior year of HS. So there's a kid in my class, not sure the age but I know he's a Junior (looks like a Freshman though), let's call him Andrew. Andrew usually never talks, and tends to listen in on others conversations, then laugh while looking in their...

Q: How to respond when person falsely claims I kicked their dog?

DavidBack story I went on a short walk after getting home from work today and there was a small dog left unattended on a grassy area. The dog started barking at me and ran up to me. I stomped my foot to scare the dog away as I was unsure of the dog's intentions. The dog's owner came running out and ...

@Mithrandir this is... funny?

Hello people, any trick to avoid thinking in loop about the same thing that depress you? I'm tring to think about other stuff but it always bring me back where I started (with the not nice thought)

@Ælis :(

♥️

8:05 AM
@Ælis Talk about it with someone, take time to think about it as long as you need to process the whole thing, or find something to do that requires a lot of your attention as well and focus on that.

8:17 AM
I'm pretty sure my thinking of it isn't healthy. I guess I will try option 3 for my workday and try to do option 1 tonight

8:34 AM
@Ælis Good luck. I hope things get better soon :)

@Tinkeringbell Thanks, I hope too 🤞
@ExtrovertedMainMan The person described in the question could as well be on the autism spectrum. In any case, I'm sad for him :/

@Ælis ? D:

@avazula Me: "I don't see any change, is it normal?". Him: "Do it with an empty cache, this bug is fixed".
Well, I know I suppose to empty the cache. I have been working here long enough, thank you...

@Ælis :(
Have you told him that?

1 hour later…
11:12 AM
@avazula No, I just said that it still doesn't work. But the issue seem to be with my specific device so I move the ticket to "to be dealt with later". Still, I don't like how I always assume that I'm wrong (and stupid)...

@Ælis :( he sucks.

@avazula Yeap. Thankfully, I have other and nicer coworkers :)

@Ælis Thankfully he won't be around for much longer now :)

@avazula Depends on how you define "long" :p

@Ælis I don't know? :p

:49479253 Ehh. It's not one we want to delete?
I'd have to ask the Closet people, perhaps they want different rules.

:49479253 Hi you :) well, what's tricky in that is that when we say "tp" or "fp", we mean that we want to keep or delete the comment, regardless of the regex with which it was closed.

Hmm

I know it's not perfect but that's the consensus we reached with the other Closet people and whoever is interested in the bot functioning in TAS

Yeah, I always thought of it as 'this is the kind of stuff that needs flagging and deleting' = true positive vs. 'this is a legitimate comment' = false positive. More as a way to see what kind of stuff should be posted in here for attention and what should be left out.

1:20 PM
I suppose that makes sense

@Rainbacon which also explains why there's no AI behind the bot (yet), otherwise it'd report comments with weird matching comments :p

I searched through chat and couldn't find the message in question
Granted, I didn't do a particularly extensive search

I can point out the chat, but it means calling out a user who thought I was harassing them
it was post october but pre christmas, so yes awhile ago

I found it, I think. I'll look into it further

1:34 PM
@Tinkeringbell I think you got involved at the time, and diffused the situation.

@Philbo I just found the message in question ... I wasn't around when this happened. So you say they said this just after you arrived in chat?

@Philbo Okay. I'd say it's not necessary to dredge up dead cows from the ditch then... In response to your point on meta I can only say that I feel this is more a case of a single incident and not a symptomatic thing?
I mean, there hasn't been any activity like that from that user since then.

@Tinkeringbell +1

Nor have I seen any flags on other users doing stuff like this... so I don't really have any paper trail that says this is systematic and constantly happening :/

@Tinkeringbell Fair enough, tbh I only brought it up then because I read through the Meta about going back on HNQ, which meant reading the older linked meta posts and one was mentioned by Upper_Case about "other problems". Obviously as well, you won't have this happen more often until you go back on HNQ. It's maybe something to watch for. New and more casual users like myself aren't going to have the experience you guys have, we will probably wind you up at times by accident
Sorry to bother you guys with it anyway

1:44 PM
@Philbo that's okay, if you don't feel welcome we'd like to do anything we can to solve this

@Philbo I see the comment exchange you're talking about in The Closet and I remember taking the other user's side on this one when it happened. I agree the comment that user made in chat was unwarranted, but I don't think there was anything inherently wrong in the comments

I think that I speak for everyone in this room when I say that we want more users. More users = more content = more fake internet points for all of us. We're trying to have discussions about ways we can be better. If you have ideas about how we can do that, please feel free to join the discussions here and here or even write a new meta question if you have another topic

@Philbo Well, if you see anything like that happen again, I have one word of advice: Please just silently raise a moderator flag. That way, we also have a paper trail, and we can more easily see problematic behaviour :)

That awkward moment when you go to wipe some smudge off your screen, forgetting that it's a touch screen, and start rifling through your browser's back button

@Rainbacon trying to clean a touch screen and having it treat the cleaning as random inputs is such a real first world problem :(

1:50 PM
haha I know right?

@scohe001 Yeah I can't recall too much about it, but I remember reflecting that I was in the wrong. I think I was being insensitive. It was how I was called out in chat that surprised me. No worries though. I just make sure to avoid getting involved in any answer that they've arrived at first.

@Philbo Sometimes that's the best course of action
I just wish more people had the foresight to take it like you did

@Philbo from the transcript it looks like they were responding pretty level-headedly while you were starting to get snarky. The message here in chat was probably them letting off some steam where they thought you couldn't see it since they were trying to keep things cordial in the comments. I can give you a link to read it if you'd like

@scohe001 Sure. I'm happy to reflect again. Again it was also the suggestion that I was chasing them around the site to downvote and argue with them, where as far as I could tell, I'd given just as many upvotes (as I don't usually look at the user when I read an answer). Nowadays, I always make sure to check who has written the post before I comment.
(or upvote/downvote)

@Philbo hmm I don't see a suggestion/accusation like that on that thread...
It starts here though. (ctrl-f for "philbo" to read through the responses)

1:55 PM
@scohe001 I found the thread, and I deleted the lot of it back then.

@Tinkeringbell I'm looking in the Closet though. Unless you deleted stuff from there...

That is indeed the thread, but I don't think it's really productive to discuss this?

In which case I don't know what to trust O_O

What problem are we trying to solve?

@Philbo asked for the link. If you think it's not worth it, feel free to delete the message though, they've probably seen it by now
I've gotta run to a meeting. Later, guys!

1:57 PM
Have fun (he said knowing that meetings are rarely fun)

hina munirmy parents are forcing me to do bs in computer science while I want to do bs in management. but they are saying that computer science scope is more than management.

@Rainbacon hahaha

@avazula I had a 4 hour block of meetings the other day, worst 4 hours of my week

@Tinkeringbell yep I've read it, feel free to delete :)

*stares at Ava, you edited the question while I was looking for literature on how to close vote it. Sneaky Ava...

@Rainbacon hehe :D I surely am TFGITW

@Rainbacon lol

@JourneymanGeek YOU'RE HERE
YAY

I got accused of that - I posted an answer, off my phone on a question with 4 closevotes before it could be closed ;p

Getting her shoot together polite tone long time no see dear Journeyman

@avazula I've been around, though, insane work hours past few weeks

2:03 PM
@Rainbacon Sometimes when it can easily be rephrased to avoid being closed I prefer to directly edit and warn them so they can express their disagreement and we can find something together
@JourneymanGeek oh no :( hope it's better now :D

@avazula eh, the extra shifts is over, but I'm unwell

@JourneymanGeek exhausted? :/

caught the flu from our DBA
all my upper orfices are sad other than my ears and eyes

That seems like a good path. I really should be thinking more in that vein. I've been trying to go badge hunting, and strunk & white is next on my list

@Rainbacon as someone who has a ton of badges on one site...

2:05 PM
@JourneymanGeek DBAs should be quarantined for this and many other reasons

that's not a bad idea ;)
Badge hunting, I mean
Our DBA is ok

lol

actually all our DBAs are ok

That's good. I've seen some pretty awful ones. Had one client where a DBA had managed to climb his way to application architect and was forcing everyone to put all business logic into SQL stored procedures
One of my stories on that project involved editing a sql query that was computing flags that the UI used to show and hide certain elements

@Rainbacon I was not prepared for this level of horror first thing in the morning O . O

2:16 PM
@TheTinyMan Sorry to scare you so early, but at least I didn't do it right before you went to bed and give you nightmares about performing file I/O in a sql statement

@Rainbacon o_o

@Rainbacon It is seriously lacking data. I believe it should still be closed.

Uh oh. I forgot my earphones when going to work this morning and I'm on the verge of not being able to bear the surrounding noise anymore ._.

@avazula That sounds awful. Sorry to hear that

#deafpeoplebenefits :P
But yeah, sounds awful for sure.

2:25 PM
@Rainbacon At least I now have a chewable necklace that makes me able of chewing stuff without hurting my fingers anymore :D
Plus I got adorable squishies with that. I shared a picture yesterday. But they're at home now.

@Rainbacon I've worked at places that were almost that bad ... but they were trying to get the presentation logic OUT of the database, not put it INto it. O . O

@TheTinyMan We had a little extra time on that project, so we built a small application to edit some app config that previously needed to be edited via data update scripts. Instead of thanking us for giving more than they'd paid for, he complained because our application used an ORM

2:43 PM
@Rainbacon Sadface

3:10 PM
Auto-adjusting sound is weird. My laptop mutes my sound when I've got it connected to the monitor at my desk (unless I connect my headphones), and it unmutes when I'm not connected (because that usually means I'm in a conference room on skype). The weird thing is, if I lock my screen, it "disconnects" from the monitor and turns the sound back on. So when I come back to my desk and wake my computer it beeps really loudly at me

I wanted to be chatty in comment, so I will be chatty in here :P

Chat away

@Anilla It's probably a good sign, I know an old person who fought in the French-Algeria war and he never even mentioned it because he is too ashame of what we did back there.

@Ælis My foster father was a child during the Algerian independence war. He had to set up bombs and stab his brother's attackers. We talked about it twice in his life. He burst into tears both times.

I learned that he was a soldier in this war because his wife was complaining that he didn't want to tell the "tax manager" that he was an ex-soldier (which would have given him less tax). He didn't wanted any money for what he did back then
@avazula :/ War is ugly and the Algerian one was a very ugly one...

3:22 PM
Let's say that I have an answer to a question. There's another answer that gives the same advice that I would give, but has no backup. The main difference between my potential answer and an existing one is that I have personal experience to draw on, is it worth posting a new answer? The existing answer already has a comment asking for backup

@Ælis wow, that's very sad indeed... War is awful
@Rainbacon I think so, yes

@Rainbacon It's definitively is IMO :)

If you bring your own XP into it, unless it's very similar to what the other answerer brought as an explanation, it's definitely worth it to me

@avazula Are you following the Brexit news? I can't believe that it will definitively happen very soon and they still have no deal. The UK leaving the EU still feel so weird to me.

@Ælis This is one of the big news, and politics in general, that I don't understand
I feel that rn we should either stay united as a European institution or completely split countries into federal, much smaller states

3:30 PM
I don't really understand their decision either, but I keep following the news anyway

@Ælis I don't watch the news. It depresses me :p
Instead I read on Medium and kinda keep up with what's going on in the US the world

@avazula I enjoy reading the Brexit news. It pleases me to see in how much trouble they put themselves :p
@avazula There is a lot of different things can do here and I have honestly no idea which one would be best. I think I'm missing too much data and certainty to have a clear mind on the question

@Ælis I'd disagree, most English people didn't want such a mess in the first place ... Now they're the ones suffering from the situation

@avazula Kind of like the political situation in certain other countries

@Ælis well, what strikes me most is that we always say: "we're getting tougher and more unfair work rules because of Europe", "we have lots of dangerous immigrants because of Europe", "we keep using Roundup because of Europe", but ... The people who decide of this "in the name of Europe" are political people from countries constituting Europe, so ... whose fault is it really? I feel it's kinda easy to blame a big, impersonal thing for our potential issues
But maybe I'm wrong and maybe there's an independent counsel deciding of the directives and guidelines for Europe...
@TheTinyMan True

3:38 PM
CGP Grey recently posted a couple Youtube videos that I thought summed up the Brexit situation nicely: youtube.com/watch?v=J1Yv24cM2os and youtube.com/watch?v=agZ0xISi40E

@avazula True and not true, most English people wanted the Brexit (but not the bad consequence they didn't see coming because politicians were lying to them). I guess I don't mind Brexit news so much because the bad consequences are also for people who voted Brexit. (If we look at Trump on the other hand, the bad consequence are more for people who didn't voted for him)

@Ælis I may not be the most legit person to talk about this but wasn't this vote biased? Take a look at the referendum we got for deciding whether we wanted that new airport in France. 55% of people voted yes. Their main reason? "it'll create jobs" <- which was a major point used by the people in favor of the airport. But the reports were crystal clear: no jobs would be created in the long run, it'd only be about transposing jobs from the older airport.

@avazula True that. Also, we have similar bad things happening just "because of France" ( "we're getting tougher and more unfair work rules", ""we keep using badProductXXX", etc..). So saying we will be better without Europe is a bit hypocrite.

Brexit is kinda the same, they told people Europe made the pound rate collapse, but what they didn't say was that it's too late to leave the European Union without drastic consequences on the British economy

@avazula Yes, the vote was biased, no arguing with that

3:44 PM
@Ælis I think that's what is unfair towards the people. You find a scapegoat to blame to reach your goals but voluntarily hide the fact that for most people it won't get better by voting that way, it's even gonna get worse. That's dishonest.

@avazula Politicians lied and now they are paying the price (because Brexit is also bad for them). I know I'm completely forgetting people that did nothing wrong and are also paying the price for that. I know this is unfair for them. But I can't help to be pleased when I look at the people (politicians) who played with the fire and burn themselves.

@Ælis I understand your POV but I'm really sad for the people who did nothing to get into this. This is exactly what we're facing rn in France with the ISI, which made donations to charities drop from 53% in just a year, or our dear president who dares to call the yellow jackets "terrorists and enemies of the country". Seriously?

@avazula I think I will be sad the day I see the consequences for them (and my brain know they will be. But my heart doesn't yet). For now I'm just fascinated by this mess. It's like watching an accident, you see it's happening and you can't stop watching because you want to know how bad it will get.
@avazula To me this is completely different because no rich, privileged person is suffering. Even less suffering for their own bad action
I guess I just want to see karma happening

@Ælis Not so many rich people will suffer from Brexit, if you ask them. They're so wealthy already...

@IPSCommentBot How did it go from 0 to 2 with one respondant?

Finally broke up my toxic relationship. I feel awful but really great at the same time.

@Anilla Good for you. Also, I'm sorry

@Rainbacon Thank you :) on to better things, right? :D Gotta stay positive

I'm sure you'll find something that is better for you

@Anilla time to take a nice long bubble bath and then get back out there? :)

@scohe001 Haha that sounds like a nice plan :)
Gonna try getting out and surrounding myself with supporting people. Can't let myself get all grumpy at home hehe

8:19 PM
For real though, bettering yourself and your life is almost never easy. Good on you for taking this big step. It may be rough now, but future Anilla will be happy you did this!!
@Anilla this x1000. Also I've heard tubs of ice cream help :P

@scohe001 Very true! Although it hurt really bad, it's so empowering to be like "wow, I actually managed to overcome an emotional situation I felt I was locked in". Ice cream sounds good too :) chocolate is my favorite!

@Anilla Man, I've been there! Congratulations, and I'm sorry for your pain.

Ice cream always helps

You know... this is why I just totally stay out of relationships ;) Sorry to hear this Anilla, and I vote ice cream and friend too. Perhaps add some baileys to the ice cream as well?

Ooh chocolate is the best. You have good taste lol

8:21 PM
Haha thanks :D I love chocolate! @TheTinyMan knows :P

@Tinkeringbell baileys?

Thanks for all the support guys! It means a lot

@scohe001 Booze! :P

Ooh that sounds absolutely amazing
And way better than putting a bunch of tiny people named Bailey in your ice cream

@Tinkeringbell Oh damn, that sounds good XD. See, since I want kids in the future I'm trying to find someone I can stay committed to haha. Otherwise I probably wouldn't mind doing without so much

8:23 PM
@Anilla If you get pregnant there won't be ice cream and Baileys though :P
So make sure to get that first now ;)
The rest will come, I'm sure :D

Hehe, thanks :D
Time to pull out the Adele albums lol

Ooooh... Play 'turning tables' :)

Ah, those cheeky SEDE folks

@Anilla Chocolate deserves your adoration!
Man a long bath sounds nice, too. I second that recommendation as well!

They removed the ids from the up/down vote records so I can't query to find out who gave me all my rep

8:29 PM
@Tinkeringbell I love that song :) definitely will.

@Rainbacon that was something they left in until now?? O_O

No, I have no idea when it was removed, now just happens to be the first time I've tried to do it

@TheTinyMan Baths are great!

It's... never been in public SEDE.

I can't take baths :(

8:30 PM
@Rainbacon Why not?? :(

My bathroom isn't big enough for a bathtub

Not with that attitude

@Rainbacon Get a barrel, and a chair. Put chair in barrel, fill up barrel, sit :P

I can't take baths unless I'm in an unusually large tub, and I don't currently own such a thing. :-( I'm too tall AND too broad to comfortably lay in a normal-sized one. But one of these days, I'm gonna sneak into my dad's house and steal his. :-D
@Tinkeringbell :o :o

Whoah! Or you could ask a friend to use their bath haha
@TheTinyMan I was gonna say, I remember you're a big guy hehe

8:31 PM
Hey, you gotta be creative at times :P

@Tinkeringbell It...it's brilliant!

I fit in most bathtubs, luckily :) I'm not that tall, though I must mind my weight to not be too wide.

Most bathtubs aren't deep enough to be comfortable...

@Anilla Yep :-) Apparently most people can't see over standard shower doors? I put my cell phone on top of my shower door track and turn on Netflix when I'm in the shower sometimes. :-P And I had a partner once who came to use the bathroom while I was showering and just started cracking up when she noticed that my head was poking over my shower rail.
@Mithrandir Oh, yeah, I forgot that dimension, too

@TheTinyMan Normal people then just adapt, and put the rail higher XD

8:34 PM
@Tinkeringbell But then I'd also need a taller door. This is the kind with a rigid door, not a curtain.
When I have a curtain, I do have to get extra-long curtains, and move the curtain rod up.
But if I'm replacing the shower door...I'm probably just gonna renovate the whole bathroom and put in a tub that I fit in. Which is more expensive. xD

@TheTinyMan Ahh. Those are horrible to clean btw :P

@Tinkeringbell Hah! My strategy is "never clean anything besides myself ever!"

GROSS!

And dishes. I clean dishes.

Eeeew lol xD
MY ROOM MATE HAS PINKY EYE.... AHHHH!!!

8:36 PM
It's okay! I have minions who do that sometimes!
Oh, that's no good :-(

Nooo it's not lol. Not for them, not for me... yikes!

@TheTinyMan read: swimming pool

@Mithrandir I actually plan to put a swimming lake in my yard at some point xD

8:50 PM
I just realized that you can approve tag wiki edits long before you can make them without requiring approval
That seems odd to me given that you gain the ability to review post edits at the same time as the ability to apply edits without review

@Rainbacon It requires a second approval though.
