Alright people, time for me to go home \o/ See you later :)

Happy hump day!

@scohe001 hump day?

@Tinkeringbell Wednesday is the "hump day" of the week.

Wednesday is the day of the week between Tuesday and Thursday. According to international standard ISO 8601 it is the third day of the week. In countries that use the Sunday-first convention and in the Jewish Hebrew calendar Wednesday is defined as the fourth day of the week. The name is derived from Old English Wōdnesdæg and Middle English Wednesdei, "day of Woden", reflecting the pre-Christian religion practiced by the Anglo-Saxons, a variation of the Norse god Odin. In other languages, such as the French mercredi or Italian mercoledì, the day's name is a calque of dies Mercurii "day of Mercury...
The last sentence of that section^

As in, the top of the "hill".

Today was pretty great for me too ;)

A J
For me, yesterday was beautiful. ;)

@AJ Tell?

A J
You already know. ;)
Or you already know and want to know how it went? ;)

5:25 PM
we don't :p

Do you want to tell the rest of the room? ;)
@AJ of course I do, but it's your secret!

A J
@Tinkeringbell I don't see any harm in telling that. ;)

*waits anticipatedly*

A J
well, people, I am engaged now!

Congrats! :D

5:28 PM
Congrats!

Congrats!

A J
Thank you all! :)

We should start a club

A J
of engaged people?

Yes
(I got engaged last year)

A J
5:29 PM
Good!

user15026
@AJ Congrats :)

A J
@Ash Thank you. :)

We should throw AJ an engagement party

A J
good idea but how?

@AJ I want to know how the party was and did you give her the Valentine's gift? Did she like it?

A J
@El'endiaStarman Thanks. It looks strange from the computer. I will check it on phone.

I'm with @scriptin, your advice doesn't seem like it would work. If anything, it's likely to make the guy think he has a chance. "I feel so much more relaxed with you than with other guys" - most guys would interpret that as flirting. — only_pro 54 secs ago

It was a great party and it went all according to the plan.

@AJ Congrats!!! How'd you do it? (if you don't mind sharing)

A J
@scohe001 Thank you :)
It's a long story.

I'm at work for the next 4.5 hours. I got time. ;)

5:37 PM
@AJ lol good. If it's too long and personal to share here, it means you did it right ;)

A J
But it's past 11 for me. It's bed time. ;)

Curse timezones!

A J
@scohe001 Hehe

@El'endiaStarman As a programmer, I feel this in a very tangible way

A J
@El'endiaStarman yep
@Rainbacon It's a big problem we programmers share.
Anyway, it's time to sleep. Good night/day everyone. :)

5:40 PM
@scohe001 Funny you should say that. Here's how my engagement to @ElizB happened: we were watching Green Lantern three months after I started courting her and during a break for some reason or other, I very impulsively asked her to marry me. She said yes. Bought a $25 sterling silver ring with a braid design off of Amazon for her. Aaand here we are, 4.5 years later...

A J
@El'endiaStarman You're engaged to ElizB?
Never knew that!

@AJ Married her March 17 last year. ;)

A J
Your wedding anniversary is near.

user15026
@El'endiaStarman laughs My engagement story is kinda similar

@AJ Yep. As her sister has been reminding us by remarking on every n-month "anniversary".

5:42 PM
@El'endiaStarman Now I feel kind of cheesy

A J
@El'endiaStarman It's you and her in her profile picture?

user15026
WorldEngineer came to visit, as he does, and we got back to my house from the airport and I was like "oh no I was going to put fresh sheets on my bed let me do that" and was rushing around my room and WorldEngineer was like "hey I need to ask you something hold up a second." and I was like "no I gotta fix the sheets hold on" so I was making my bed and turned around and he was down on one knee on my bedroom floor and I just like sat on my bed and was like "what are you even" and then he asked me

user15026
and I was like "are you sure?" like 100 times and then said yes

A J
Nice!!

@AJ Indeed. That's from the pre-wedding photoshoot.

5:44 PM
@Ash That's adorable

user15026
But it's a supremely unfancy very us kind of story - he had planned to make it more idk fancy or whatever but then he was like "I was at your house and I saw you and I was like "I can't wait anymore"

@Ash Haha that's great!

A J
@El'endiaStarman Great! You both look adorable.

@Ash I'm pretty sure that's what happened to me too.

user15026
And then we got married like....4 months later or something (city hall wedding, so we could start immigration stuff, we plan to eventually do a fancier like...vow renewal thing at some point once we are done immigration stuff)

5:45 PM
@Ash How's the immigration stuff coming?

@AJ Thanks. :)

user15026
@Rainbacon We are waiting right now - medical is done, we're just waiting for them to do the background check an the like relationship legitimacy check, I'm hoping we will get his passport request by like ...maybe end of March? That could be nice. (but theoretically it could take til October, but I doubt it will)

Hopefully it goes well for you

user15026
I know it will, I just gotta be patient (which I am super struggling with today. But maybe tomorrow will feel easier)

user15026
@AJ Well, I am just glad to see the happiness. :) It makes my heart feel lighter to see other people's joy :)

6:00 PM
@El'endiaStarman and @ElizB are you ready for the storm?

@Rainbacon It looks like I'll be heading home from work about when it starts snowing.

Oh dear. It's quite snowy here already. Hope you get home before it gets too bad.

Congrats @AJ!
And it was really nice to "hear" about the engagement story of you all :)
Changing subject now:
@Tinkeringbell and @avazula, you might be interested in this link about the difference between cultural exchange and cultural appropriation
And here is also more reading for @ava (I was unable to just choose an article, so I put them all :p ) google.com/…

6:41 PM
Thanks @Ælis <3

@avazula :D <3

Here is a joke.

Where's the punchline?

@El'endiaStarman It's over there after the table with the food on it

If you tell me it's at the tables in the back, I already looked there.
@Rainbacon Oh, excellent! Thanks!

6:52 PM
Someone typed "Thanks <3" in chat. Then I said there must be exactly 2 thanks. Why? Because "thanks" is plural, so there are more than one thanks. But we also know from <3 that there are less than 3 thanks. Result follows.

Haha nice!

@El'endiaStarman We had to take down the bag after someone hit it too hard and it exploded.

@Mithrandir They...uh...punched the punch paunch?

@Jasper XD

(Apologies to non-native speakers of English. And native speakers of English.)

6:54 PM
Since you guys like it, you should star it. =)

Done :p

Looking for that badge?

I think Ava once said some joke here about a French, a German, and a Spanish. I can't find that one now.

@Jasper Did it involve a juggler standing up on a table?

@El'endiaStarman Yes!

6:59 PM
I believe the punchline was Yes, Oui, Si, Ja

Indeed.

Dec 13 '18 at 13:21, by avazula
An englishman, a frenchman, a spanish guy and a german are watching a street performer do some juggling. The juggler notices that they have amiserable view to see him. So, he stands up on a wooden box and ask them :"Can you all see me now ?"
"Yes"
"Oui"
"Si"
"Ja"

Yeah, that ranks high up on my list of favorite jokes.

user15026
@Jasper giggles oh that's a good one!

@El'endiaStarman I've got a math question for ya hehe. Can I represent the derivative of a sigmoid function as: 1 / ( 2*cosh( x ) + 2 ) ? Wolfram is telling me that e^x+e^(-x) can be represented as 2cosh(x)... I'm trying to avoid multiple exponential function calls in my li'l' program.

7:12 PM
Oh boy. Lemme see...

@Anilla Are you asking about whether the derivative is correct, or just whether the exponential can be replaced by the cosh?

@Jasper Well, both really. If I could somehow learn how to verify a derivative (by hand maybe, just for the fun) that'd be neat too. I'm not the best at math so bare with me :P And if it can be replaced by cosh I'd like to know why... like is there an identity somewhere?

Let me find a couple of Wiki links to help us go along...
In mathematics, hyperbolic functions are analogs of the ordinary trigonometric, or circular, functions. The basic hyperbolic functions are: hyperbolic sine "sinh" (), hyperbolic cosine "cosh" (),from which are derived: hyperbolic tangent "tanh" (), hyperbolic cosecant "csch" or "cosech" ( or ) hyperbolic secant "sech" (), hyperbolic cotangent "coth" (),corresponding to the derived trigonometric functions. The inverse hyperbolic functions are: area hyperbolic sine "arsinh" (also denoted "sinhβˆ’1", "asinh" or sometimes "arcsinh") and so on. Just as the points (cos t, sin t) form a circle with a...
First of all, from that link on hyperbolic functions, you can see that we can define cosh (hyperbolic consine) in terms of exponential.
So that answers the second question. It is just follows from the definition of cosh itself.
A sigmoid function is a mathematical function having a characteristic "S"-shaped curve or sigmoid curve. Often, sigmoid function refers to the special case of the logistic function shown in the first figure and defined by the formula S ( x ) = 1 1 + e βˆ’ x = e ...

@Anilla That derivative representation is correct.
Just verified it by hand.

Now from the link on sigmoid function, you can see that sigmoid function can mean many different things.
But maybe you are talking about the specific one which is mentioned at the start of the article.

7:22 PM
@Jasper That's what I assumed too: 1 / (1 + e^-x)

@El'endiaStarman Oh! What's the steps for verifying by hand? @Jasper I see that the identify of cosh is: cosh(x)=[(e^(x)-e^(-x)] / 2 and then bringing the 2 over we get 2cosh(x)=e^x-e^-x ... But that doesn't make sense since the derivative of sigmoid is 1/e^x + e^-x + 2 ?
How am I able to substitute the e^x+e^-x with 2cosh(x)?

@Anilla The minus sign there should be a plus sign in the definition of cosh.

@Jasper Oh my god XD I was reading sinh for a second while writing it down... I'm my own enemy... I get the substitution reason now :P

$$f(x) = \frac{1}{1 + e^{-x}} = (1 + e^{-x})^{-1} \\
f'(x) = +(1 + e^{-x})^{-2} e^{-x} = \frac{e^{-x}}{1 + 2e^{-x} + e^{-2x}} \\
\frac{1}{f'(x)} = \frac{1 + 2e^{-x} + e^{-2x}}{e^{-x}} = \frac{1 + e^{-2x}}{e^{-x}} + 2 = 2\cosh(x) + 2$$

@El'endiaStarman I wish chat had mathjax... I'ma plug it in somewhere thanks!

7:28 PM
@Anilla I have an extension named ChatJax.

@El'endiaStarman I sometimes just paste the code into Math SE question box or answer box, LOL.

@Jasper Not a bad idea! :P

Is there some sort of test I can use between a function and its derivative to determine if the derivative is indeed a derivative?

@Anilla Yes. Simply differentiate the function to check that the derivative is correct! But maybe that is not what you mean...

@Jasper ...this is literally what I did to answer Anilla's question...

7:35 PM
Yes. There is no other way.

But another way to sorta do it is to calculate (f(x + reallysmallamount) - f(x)) / reallysmallamount and compare it with f'(x).

That's a heuristic justification, something like that.

@El'endiaStarman Oooo that's what I was looking for :)

Yeah, if they're way off then you either did something wrong or your function is crazy.

Thanks ya'll! Sorry my understanding is a bit naive hehe, I really appreciate it :)

7:37 PM
@Anilla That would give us an idea of why the answer might be correct, but not really prove that the answer is correct.

@Anilla No problem. :)

@Jasper I don't necessarily wanna prove its correct, just see if it's close enough.

@Anilla Aha! Which is why it is important for us to understand what your question was really asking for. But yeah I think we have said in total all the important things already.

Aw man I just saw this @ and now it's way too late for a response to make any sense...
...but "muahahaha!"

@Jasper Mhm! Thanks :D I'm doing a programmatic comparison now to determine which derivative form performs better...

7:42 PM
@El'endiaStarman I WANT TO TALK ABOUT ALL OF THE SPOILERS! xD

@Anilla It may be worth finding out how your chosen language actually calculates cosh. If it's by way of one of the identities using exp(), then you may be better off using a form that uses exp instead of cosh.

@El'endiaStarman Yea, that's what I need to test. If it's just defined like the actual cosh function and not using a table or some sort of programmatically optimized algorithm, then it wouldn't be worth it.

Oh I know nothing about programming, hehe.

Well... thanks a lot GoLang XD The darn thing says it took 0 nanoseconds for each statement to run... That doesn't tell me anything Ahhhh!!! :P

So it doesn't matter? LOL
If speed is your main concern, that is.

7:50 PM
I suppose it very well could be lol... idk maybe I'm writing my time comparisons incorrectly... I'll have to see

In Python, the cosh way is faster!

@TheTinyMan yessss i do too but not in here i dont want to spoil
good afternoon

Hello @ElizB :) how's it going?

kinda sleepy and relaxing now. reading The Warlords of Nin by Stephen lawhead
very intense

@ElizB That sounds like my kind of afternoon hehe :)
Any tea to go along with it? :P

@Anilla Yeah, had some Lemon Tulsi tea earlier
very relaxing

@ElizB Ahh, that sounds soothing :) grrr I need to buy more tea... all I have is my room-mate's soda... no good! :P

9:36 PM
I quit drinking soda a long time ago- more than 6-7 years ago. I have white soda only once or twice a year
dark colored soda does nothing good

@ElizB I agree. I like sparkling wines and carbonated waters. I try drinking mostly water and tea though. Personal favorites :)

I love seltzer as well. Sparkling wine is kinda weird for me

I feel like the commenters/answerers to my assertiveness question are getting too bogged down in trying to provide specific solutions to the examples I provided.

@ElizB I asked Tink about this problem the other day and she suggested a feature that I always forget about: you guys wanna go into another room to talk about it? xD

@TheTinyMan Sure haha I thought about it too but forgot about it

9:40 PM
Who wants to talk about The Dragon Prince Season 2 spoilers with us? :-D

@TheTinyMan I would if I knew what it was about XD

@Anilla go watch it ;)
i think you'd like it

@ElizB I'll add it to my "IPS Friend Recommendation List" :) I got a load of books and now films to check out

@Anilla it's a show on netflix

@ElizB Oh it's on the 'flix :) I should be able to watch it then hehe

9:45 PM
@Anilla yup. bonus- there's a deaf character that shows up in episode 4 so at least watch it till then. the episodes are only 24 minutes long

user15026
@TheTinyMan This reminds me I need to watch that at some point

@Ash Yes, yes you do! :-D Also, hi, I haven't chatted with you for a bit! How's tricks?

@Ash Absolutely!! have I mentioned there's a deaf character that uses ASL? and I can understand the character?

user15026
@TheTinyMan Today I am kinda grumpy but that's okay.

user15026
@ElizB oh that's fantastic.

9:54 PM
@Ash yes. so fantastic. not only that, shes an awesome character and badass and very blunt, much like many other deaf people I know

@ElizB I just wish they gave us subtitles for the ASL!

@TheTinyMan heh, yeah.... sorry guys
I understood what she said pretty much the whole time

@TheTinyMan Sounds like a good reason to learn ASL

@Rainbacon I've had a few of those now... I really should...

@Rainbacon hehe yes please
@TheTinyMan yes you should

9:57 PM
@Ash Aww, why are you grumpy today? D:

ASL is one of the coolest languages. Being able to 'speak' without speaking... my ex knew it and they were able to communicate with their siblings from far away in super loud areas. Loads of respect :)

Sounds like witchcraft to me! ;-)

user15026
@ElizB I like that, it shows they did their homework

@Ash it may just be part of her character but yes indeed
