Q: How Can We Incorporate Academic Literature into IPS.SE?

Upper_CaseI'm on record as being concerned about the difficulties of basing questions and answers exclusively about published academic literature here on IPS.SE. The summary version is that I don't think that more focus on published research will improve IPS.SE question or answer quality very much, will ca...

Q: Date's grand-parent died. Did I do right?

ElGouttefangeasContext I'm a man (22), talking about a woman (24). We met on a dating site. From there been talking pretty much non stop everyday for quite some time. We had a first date last saturday. The goal of both sides was purely to discuss and check the feeling (I had proposed a movie, but she said...

@El'endiaStarman It's a great answer

5:26 AM
Thanks! :)

@ElizB Well, to be honest, I was a little scared approaching them back then last year. But not for the effort, but cause I was scared of the language barrier gonna cause missunderstandings. But they all for so kind and funny folks I really enjoyed it. I want to share a funny anecdote about it with you :D
When I was spending time with them, one of them could hear if you were speaking loud into his ears, as long a ear device he had was on power, and also He was able to speak a little. He kept translating for me and his mates. But for one I didn't liked that cause most of his mates seemed a bit annoyed of it and for the other part, I wanted to integrate so they feel comfortable. So at one point I asked him to stop translating and rather just explaining me how to gesticulate the words I needed.
All of them except one were seemingly appreciating that. So when at some point we walked to join some partying folks at another hut, that guy who might have been a bit annoyed of me was walking like 10 meters ahead and the guy who was able to talk with me walked with me. So I whispered into his ear "Tell me, is you friend allways like that, or does he not like me?"

And he just responded "I can't understand you, could you please speak up a bit? I mean he can't hear you anyways, you don't need to whisper"
And a good morning to all of you :)

Q: Is my friendship twisted and does she abuse me?

KyaraSome people tell me my friendship with Cheyenne is twisted me and Cheyenne love each other we're like sisters but Cheyenne can be bitchy, bossy, snobbish, judging, rude, selfish, and cold. But underneath all of that she cares and I can tell when I needed her she was there through heartbreaks, whe...

@avazula @Noon I had by the way yesterday my conversation with our councelot :) She actually was more or less inline with what you 2 said. But we found a way how I can approach my coworker in telling her about the different screen setting without either having to lie, nor without having to mention the underlying reason :)

7:59 AM
Good morning!
yawn

@Rainbacon I am waking up at 4.30 so I can leave my room at 5.30 an am at work at 6 am x'D Just to add my 2 cents xD
Hah morning :P

8:47 AM
Hello-every-one! ♥

Heya!

How are you doing today? :)

Cold! It's freezing here
(and my bedroom isn't all that well isolated, so...)
I have an extra sweater, and two blankets :)

@Tinkeringbell so comfy :)
It's -2°C here as well
but the heating is quite good in our offices

+2 here :x I hope it starts freezing by 25th jan aswell. ^^

9:41 AM
Hello people! :D
I know that makes me an annoying person, but I love discovering things that aren't right so that I can fix them (by telling people that they should do better ^^'). And, on the web site that I'm testing, I just found a lot of things that aren't right at all for accessibility. Right now, I feel like someone who just discovered a gold mine :p

9:56 AM
@Noon: I know how you feel xP I once was like that too. I just changed it cause I couldn't bear the intersocial stress this was bringing with it anymore. But if you can, have fun mining <3

@dhein Hehe, thanks :p

10:45 AM
@dhein About the fact that doing this is bringing intersocial stress, I'm doing this because it's my job to check and report things like that. I do it less otherwise because it brings conflicts which is draining (but I still do it because I find it wrong to not try to fix things)

@Noon there's nothing with enjoying hunting down and fixing and improving things in pretty much any aspect of life - where it becomes problematic (outside of a tester/QA role) is the "by telling people that they should do better"
part

@motosubatsu Well, I see nothing wrong with telling people "stop making racist/sexist/homophobe/transphobe/etc... jokes". Of course it must be said in a proper way for it to work, but otherwise...

@Noon I'd agree with you there.. I should probably be more specific in that I was thinking more along the lines of telling people how to do things in general
stopping abusive behavior of course is always a laudable goal

Q: What to do if a potential sugar baby steal money?

user4951A friend of mine found out that someone withdraw money from his ATM. He is very surprised. The event was yesterday and his memory was still very fresh. As far as he know, he never lost the ATM card. The bank told him about the exact time and location the ATM is lost. He checked CCTV. That is ...

@motosubatsu Well, if what someone do isn't impacting me or anyone else in a bad/dangerous way, I really don't care ^^

10:56 AM
@Noon cool.. sounds like we are in broad agreement there then
apologies if I looked like I was jumping on you - that really wasn't my intent

@motosubatsu Don't worrie, it's fine :)

1 hour later…
12:01 PM
@Noon Ah I get it. Yeah, but even if it was my job, and no one would directly support my point (dunno if that is the case for you, but it sometimes sounds like) I would just reduce the effort I am putting in it. Don't understand it as an advice. As said if you can handle it, great thing :)
@Noon Well it becomes problematic, as you are judging by your view of what defines these ethical standards. And by indoctrinating others to act acording to your ethical standards, it gets problematic. Even if you are right about it others might have slightly different views and that way you get someone in opposition who might otherwise even be on your side.
Not to mention, the impact it had in cases where you possibly are "wrong". If that makes any sense >.<

@dhein Too early
@avazula It's 0C here. And I had to walk to work while it was snowing because the bus was too far away.

@dhein I'm really not up for a debate, nor am I up to dig further into what you intend to say but I just wanted to tell you that we probably have different views on that

1:42 PM
@Noon I know ;)

2:06 PM
You know what people? We have 666 meta questions! :O

:O

2:29 PM
Maybe thats why my server died xD

This inspires me one of my fav metal songs but I'll save it for myself x)

@avazula ooh is it in English? Or French?
I don't think I've ever heard any French metal...

@scohe001 English. But if you wanna hear french humouristic metal, I got your back :p

Humouristic metal?
Might as well send links to both, now you have me curious

@scohe001 Okay, so that devil meta remark made me thought about this
And one pretty good example of French humouristic metal is that
there's also German sentences in it

Q: The great canonical library

NoonI suggest using this question to post canonical questions that we can't answer on IPS. @IntrovertedMetaMan. Wow, you are so quick today!

@Noon he must be peeved about my comment yesterday, he's trying to make up for his less cool avatar
@avazula ooh I'll check em out after scrum!

@scohe001 Ahah, it must be that :p

Q: How can I correct text of another person during a chat without being pedant or making fun of the other person?

SantiagoA written chat is not a good channel of communication for no verbal language, hence, is quite easy to make mistakes because each side might add different context to the sentences. This might cause difficulties whenever a correction, a negative or a disagreement has to be said in a written chat. ...

@Noon When Christianity.SE was at 665 main site questions, three people posted a question about 666. :P

2:53 PM
@El'endiaStarman Haha, that was something to be expected on a site name "Christianity" :P I wonder if this number also have particular meaning in other "culture"

Doubtful. Small numbers tend to lend themselves really well to numerology and so you might find those repeated in independent cultures (e.g. the significance of 7 - 7 days in a week, 7 chakras, etc). Large numbers, on the other hand, probably won't pop up independently in different cultures.

@El'endiaStarman Unless you are also counting using a base 10. In this case, the fact that the "6" repeat themselves might also lead to a special meaning
Changing subject but I must say I'm quite baffled at how popular my "eye contact question" is (judging on the number of upvote on my question + its answer)

@El'endiaStarman 613 and 18 are both auspicious in Judaism, but those are the biggest I know of

it crops up in Thelema, although that's hardly occuring independently

@scohe001 What about 40?

3:14 PM
@El'endiaStarman huh. I didn't even realize until reading the Wikipedia just how often 40 pops up. I never noticed, but with all those examples it points out it makes sense. It's funny since 4 is such terrible luck in the eastern cultures

> The number 40 is used in Jewish, Christian, Islamic, and other Middle Eastern traditions to represent a large, approximate number, similar to "umpteen".
:D
Whenever there's a public transport delay, I'm now going to say it was 40 minutes long

@Tinkeringbell Huh, interesting! That actually makes a fair amount of sense...

It's almost like 'There's not enough fingers and toes on two people to count this, so it has to be a lot! XD'

@avazula Ooh Avenged Sevenfold is always 👌
@avazula LOL I love this. The humor is perfect and the song actually isn't bad! :p

Though it's probably also worth noting that the Book of Revelation has several huge numbers, like the 144,000 people sealed for God; 12,000 from each of the 12 tribes of Israel.

3:26 PM
Should we close this question? I mean, the answers there don't seem to have any real backup or are mostly "in my opinion blablabla because of this and that"

3:42 PM
@scohe001 haha :)

4:40 PM
@dhein Lots of people are nervous about the language barrier but I'm really honestly impressed that you told the group that you wanted to gesture your communication and learn some signs
Good morning :)
Got some snow this morning, and we're anticipating at least a foot or two of snow Saturday night through Sunday all day

Q: How can I discuss beer without sounding like a snob?

Chris CireficeI like beer. I like drinking it, discovering it, and I just recently started brewing it. Needless to say, one of my common topics of conversation is beer (of course there are plenty more, and beer is not my go-to for sure). When people say “yeah I like beer” in conversation and I mention that I ...

6:58 PM
@ElizB I found that kinda... self-evident, that sfter they invited me so kind, that I should not expect them to comply with me. And I found it honestly exciting :) But maybe they were impressed, too. That would explain why all except the one changed their attitude significantly possitive towards me after I started that :)
And morning to you too :)

Q: How do I talk to my housemate about bathroom hygiene?

AlakazamAlaskaI live in a shared house with 3 other people through my college's housing program. We have our own rooms, a common kitchen and living room, and two bathrooms (1 per two people).
