kinda quiet in here... still, feels good to be on break now

Quiet?

from my perspective, it feels kinda quiet at the moment lol

Well it was... until you made some noise.

emphasis on the word kinda

Indeed.

1:57 AM
Maybe ElizB was whispering.

It did sound like a whisper, come to think of it.

@Noon Yeah, my writing style is occasionally reported as such. But it is also said to be enlightening, from the same readers. So... I guess you may want to try to read it again to comprehend it? I say this not to brag though, hope you understand that.
When I write I imagine that each sentence giving a slice of the topic, so that I can bring you from one perspective to another. If we don't do that, then... we only have a perspective to look at it. Maybe the jump between perspectives makes you feel confused?
Speaking of English, I am not a native English speaker too. But I think you will be interested if I correct some of your mistakes, so I will go ahead now :P
First, you have to know that English isn't my native language so this doesn't help me to understand your answer. Usually, when I read an answer, I see a dot which is linked to another dot, which is linked to another dot, etc until it reaches the conclusion. To me, your answer look likes several dots with no link to each other. I understand each individual point but I can't make sense of it as a whole. But, again, this might be because my English isn't good enough
but it's very well that I have my mistake too, so please show me if you see one

@Ooker I'm sorry, I already read your answer multiple times but still can't make sense of it. I just feel like there is something missing who prevent me to see the structure of your answer. And, more importantly, I'm still unable to see how that answer the question. Maybe if you had a "summary"? Like: do X -> this lead to Y. Then, thanks to Y, you can do Z -> which lead to B. And B is the answer to your question

Q: Teacher not following punctuation rules on Facebook

Andrei BozantanMy daughter's teacher has a Facebook group for keeping the parents up to date with various information at school. The problem is that on a regular basis she is not following the punctuation rules: she puts a space before the punctuation marks (comma, dot, exclamation mark), instead of putting the...

8:44 AM
@Noon (1) do you agree that building OP's confidence actually solves the problem better?
(2) do you agree that to build confidence OP needs to approach her husband's preference in a curious manner instead of disgusting?

@ExtrovertedMainMan ._.

(3) do you agree that to approach that she needs to know why she hates it at the first place?
so if you agree with all three, then you have the structure: 3 → 2 → 1

8:59 AM
@Ooker Hi. I just read your answer, and I feel that you're offering a frame-challenge to OP, that is: instead of trying to communicate with their husband that they don't like oral sex, you're advising them to actually try oral sex, after trying to figure out why OP doesn't want to do it. Is that right?
If this is the case, well, I shall let you know: frame challenges answers are welcome and encouraged, if well formed. I think yours is almost fitting this requirement, although, to me it misses an important point: if you offer a frame challenge, you should also explain why you think OP couldn't achieve what they wanted to do in the first place.
So, for your answer to be valid, it'd be great if you could edit your answer to explain why you think OP could not try to express their dislikes to their husband before actually trying oral sex.

9:55 AM
@Ooker Are you saying that: She need to understand why she don't like it -> so she need to have an open mind -> and she need to have confidence -> and...? I still don't understand how is this answering OP question

@Noon if she understand why she doesn't like it, and asking questions so that her husband understand why he likes it → then her mind and her husband's mind will be opened → then her husband will understand why she doesn't like it, and she will understand why he likes it → then her disgust will mitigate, and both will be able to work out the problem, without dragging into the vicious cycle

@Ooker But why do you think OP shouldn't pursue what they originally asked for instead?
You need to explicitly explain why you think OP shouldn't try to achieve what they actually asked for before offering a frame challenge answer

Does "why you think OP shouldn't try to achieve what they actually asked" mean "OP should try oral sex despite her disgust"?
I offer the frame challenge because I think they will get into the demand-withdrawal dynamic: the more she wants the more he doesn't want. And because she knows that he will withdraw from her demands, she will be more anxiety and demands more

10:15 AM
@Ooker I'm not discussing your proposal of trying something else. I'm advising you to edit your answer to explain before your proposal why you think OP shouldn't try to talk with their husband about their disgust for oral sex before trying to change their mind regarding oral sex. Something in the shape of "In my opinion, you shouldn't try to talk about your disgust before trying what I'll suggest in the next paragraph, and here's why: [your explanation here]" would work perfectly

OK I see. Give me some times and I'll edit it. Thank you.

@Ooker You're welcome :) thanks for taking the time to editing.

but do you understand it? Do you see it's unclear?

@Ooker What do you mean? Are you asking if I understand your proposal?

yes

10:20 AM
@Ooker No, I understand your answer, there's no problem with that :)
On your side, do you understand the need for explaining why you have to explain why you offered an alternate answer to OP? Otherwise, I suggest you'd have a look at the meta post I linked in a comment below your answer.

Q: How to make gym goodbyes less painful?

biotechI'm about to change gym because I'm looking for new motivations, harder training, muscle grow and get a better aerobic/anaerobic base. What should I say to my current trainer and gym colleagues in order to make this transition as natural and less painful as possible?

@Avazula sorry I haven't checked the post since then. But I don't see why I shouldn't include it.
But now I see it, I don't really understand the downvotes. Are they because the answer is unclear or doesn't fit the structure?

@Ooker It could be both that they don't like what you're offering or because your answer doesn't (yet) meet the frame challenge requirements, I can't speak for all downvoters.

if it's the former, then why is that?

10:35 AM
@Ooker I don't know; again, I can't speak for them.
It may be because it could feel like you're telling OP to "try harder" to like oral sex
But again, I don't know

thank you for your advise

Your welcome. Feel free to come by and ask (or simply chat!) should you ever feel the need or want to.
@Noon By any chance do you know if it's possible to start a bounty on a meta post?

It is not.

@Mithrandir Shoot. Thanks Mith :)

Why do you want to?

10:46 AM
@Avazula You can always edit to bump the post, but that's all :/

To get more attention, you can ask a mod to put a tag on it.

@Mithrandir I may consider that option soon if the post doesn't get more answers. I'm disappointed my latest question (what to do with regular users refusing to follow IPS' rules) got only 2 answers so far. I care for this question for I think it may speed up our FAQ deployment (but I understand Tink may be busy with other topics right now)

Mmm. There... isn't really much we can do about them besides for flagging for mod attention and explaining the issue - then it's out of your hands
the users, I mean, not the posts with lack of attention

@Mithrandir Yeah, I guess we can't do much about this.

(And that capital A is still throwing me.)

10:50 AM
But I'd really like people to get more active around, we lost quite a lot of great users recently and we're only a handful left involved in moderation. I'm sad
@Mithrandir Yeah, it hurts my eyes too, but I can't change it immediately, there's a 30 days delay to respect :/

there's a bit of a way around that
go to another site, change it there, and press copy to all sites

@Mithrandir Huh. Didn't know about that.

Yeah, it's not the most obvious

@Mithrandir That may have been changed recently but it's forbidden across communities now

Oh huh

10:53 AM
This is absolutely off-topic, but I really like the way this hat suits your avatar @Mithrandir

Hmm, you don't have a Literature account, so I can't help you. Oh well, I guess :P
Thanks, @Noon!

@Mithrandir I don't?

I'm going to add this one to the "show off your hats" post soon.
not that I saw on a brief glance, @ava

@Mithrandir Well that's something that needs to be changed

10:55 AM
@Mithrandir Nice, to bad I already upvoted your post there :P

heh

@Mithrandir issue solved!

*goes to find it*

I'm there, if it's easier for you

aaaand done

@Mithrandir I struggle to understand why you were all so shocked about my uppercase but thanks ^^

Small, sudden changes that jar what I'm used to? People will notice :P

@avazula People just don't like capitalization :)

11:14 AM
@Tinkeringbell Heh. I did this because I wanted people to know that Ava's the name I'd liked people to use for calling me. Anyway :p

If you want an upper case Avazula, just pick it and stick with it ;)
People will get used to it.
I had one person complaining my parrot was too red when I switched to this one.

@Tinkeringbell Nah, I agree it was shocking :p
Really?
That's sad

I'm sticking with this one, it suits me better :P
It's a thing people will have to get used to ;)

I guess that if I draw you an ava with you and a parrot on your forearm then it'll be a gift to you but people won't stand the fact that you changed "again" :p

I'm so not focus on work today. I keep thinking about what I have to do at home and can't focus on anything else. To bad thinking about all the gifts I have to wrap won't make them wrap themself... :P

11:17 AM
Is that a thing in other countries/places too? Over here, if e.g. someone goes to get a horrible haircut, or really different clothes, a way to get around complimenting is to say 'I think I have to get used to this'.

@Tinkeringbell that may sound patronizing but yes, we use that too in France :p

@Tinkeringbell In my family, you just say "It changes..."

@avazula Heh. I think I'll be stuck with this one for a while. Changing your profile picture/nickname a lot as a mod is confusing for the people you're dealing with :)

@Noon Don't lie to us, it's because you still have images of our wonderful weekend in your head :p

@avazula Haha, yeah, that too :D

@Tinkeringbell I get that :)

@Sid :(

2:26 PM
@avazula I just have added the below to the answer. Is it better?
I would say that it's better to focus on trying to understand why your huband likes that instead of trying to express what you want. Usually, when we "smell" that our proposal may be rejected, we will have an insecurity, and this insecurity will evokes insecurity of the others, and both sided will be dragged into a vicious cycle of no way out.

Q: How do I talk to family members who I haven't talked to in years about rumours of a relative in ICU?

SummerMy mother doesn't talk to her brother or mother anymore due to some family feud. Lot's happened, I was a teen and kind of awkwardly in the middle of it. @Ooker Sorry, I was in a conf call
I think this explains well enough why OP shouldn't pursue their original goal. Thanks for editing.
@Ooker Although, I should warn you, I feel that your latest comment on your answer was a bit unfriendly, I suggest you'd be careful in the future.

1 hour later…
3:57 PM
@noon i'll answer that question here, so i'm afraid that people will judge my husband and think of him as different and not respect his differences

4 messages moved to Trash

@ElizB You should add that to your answer, it's not properly answerable otherwise (and sound like a phrasing request which is a closing reason)

4:24 PM
@Noon I didn't want answers to sound like "You should ignore what your family says, nobody can judge your husband because he's autistic", but something that actually said how to tell them.

@ElizB To avoiding risking that, maybe also specify this in your question? (also, if you have this kind of answers, they will be delete as NAA). And for the question itself, I would phrase it as "How to tell them that he have autism while minimissing the risk of them judging him badly because of that?"

@Noon since I already have an answer I like from the question, there's not much that I want to change...

@ElizB Alright then ^^

@Noon I appreciate the suggestions though.
I think the comments sorta imply what I explicitly said here- " I don't feel satisfied with what I've been saying. I don't want to come across as making an excuse for his habits, or defending him.", "I have not liked how if he doesn't come and socialize in a situation they assume that he should be there "with his wife", and ask "where's your husband? Is he trying to hide from us?" "Tell him he has to come next time!" "
the second comment especially sounds like I don't want them to judge him and make comments based on that judgement

4:43 PM
@ElizB True enough. I think I'm gonna answer your question later for the benefice of the people who have the same question but have there mind set on telling there acquaintance

@avazula I keep meaning to write an answer there but I keep getting sidetracked, sorry :(

Can anyone help me?
> if you need an explanation why OP shouldn't try to communicate her husband, then give me a break and I will edit it. If you don't understand or don't like the solution, please help me to understand you. You can also read the conversation in chat here
What's unfriendly or unkind here?

@Tinkeringbell Maybe the "give me a break"?

Hmmm. That's a really far stretch though, and perhaps not what those flags are meant for.
give me a break might be a bit more exasperated than 'give me some time'
If I really missed something, I'm here ;) But I'm not going to delete that as unkind, I think.

@Tinkeringbell I don't think "give me a break" means what you're trying to make it mean there. It actually has nothing to do with giving time. It's more "stop annoying me"

@scohe001 Is that then one of those native English things I tend to miss?
:P

This list of definitions seems pretty close

8:57 PM
Hmmm.

@Tinkeringbell heh it's one of those pesky "figure of speech" thingies

Okay, so perhaps the 'give me a break' is unkind then...

"If you need an explanation for why OP shouldn't try to communicate with her husband, then let me know and I can edit the question in a second. If you don't..."
Would probably be fine^

Except that as used in the comment, the "unkind" definition doesn't really fit the context.

I was one of the people who flagged that comment. I flagged it because of "give me a break". It came off sounding somewhat passive aggressive

9:02 PM
Awk I just realized this isn't one of your own comments @Tink. Oops!!

@scohe001 That's okay. I probably should've been clearer ;)

Also, hasn't the answer that comment was posted on been deleted as well?

Sounds to me like a non-native speaker unaware of the connotations of the phrase.

@Rainbacon I'm thinking right now that maybe we should save the unkind flags for stuff that's more clearly passive-aggressive... And the r/a ones for the stuff that's well, outright rude. Like Mith said, this may well be someone that doesn't understand the meaning of that phrase correctly, like I did.
@Rainbacon It has, there was a second unkind flag on it though. So I was wondering what I was missing, what the community saw that I didn't ;)

That's fair, I checked the user's profile and there is no indication whether they are a native speaker or not. When I flagged it I did think it was borderline. I feel like I might have seen another user mention it and that tipped me toward the flag

9:08 PM
The user is indeed not a native speaker (they said it in chat)

Ah, I must have missed that. Given that information I'd be inclined to dismiss the comment

I think, assuming good intentions means assuming everyone may not be a native speaker ;) None of you can probably remember my first post... but I thought retarded was the right word to describe 'less advanced in mental, physical, or social development than is usual for one's age'.
People thankfully helped me edit that, instead of flagging it :P

@Tinkeringbell Do we have a meta post as to when we should use each flag? I must admit, I never know if or what to flag when it's borderline

@Noon If stuff is borderline, err on the side of caution. If stuff is making you doubt between unkind or no longer needed, use no longer needed.
The same goes for rude or unkind, if you're not sure it's really rude, feel free to use unkind.

@Tinkeringbell Alright, thanks :)

9:14 PM
There isn't really a post that says 'these words should be flagged like this' :P
There are a few examples in the code of conduct though...
But I wouldn't treat those as law.

I know there are penalties that come with rude flags, are there any for unkind?

@Tinkeringbell Well, that's definitively a shame, the autistic side of me really like blanc and white things :P

Take for example the comment we were just discussing: There's no evidence the writer knew that it was passive aggressive, there's not really a clue that they did so intentionally. Now had that thread escalated, I might've said 'yup, that's where it probably started to get unkind' (now that I too know the meaning of 'give me a break' :P). But there's nothing... so it's better to err on the side of caution and think 'oh, perhaps they don't know that it means what I know it means'
@Noon There's never going to be such a thing when it comes to unkind, unfriendly, rude, abusive... Because as soon as we start arguing about words, people will find other ways to be nasty without using those words.
Like I can call people 'Pancakes' pretty safely...
We've been jokingly using that in other rooms.

XD

While, if I wanted to be nasty, I'd call you a pancake (idiot). Now should we really argue about banning pancakes? :P

9:20 PM
Definitively if you are the one using it :P

Yeah, but ... how many people know that? :P

But yeah, I understand why no such rules exist. It just that it makes things a little harder for me to know when and what to flag (but it's fine, I can live with that ^^)

@Tinkeringbell I've always thought you were one syrup'y little pancake, I just never had the guts to tell you :p

@scohe001 I should've never told y'all that little secret.
Well, have fun with it! Don't become rude though. ;)

I'm familiar with the use of pancake as an insult. I have a friend who's been using it for a few years
I guess I'll have to lead the charge of policing Tink :)

9:26 PM
YOU- YOU- YOU WAFFLE!

I have another friend who uses waffle as an insult, although he usually does so by tacking onto the end of a swear word
