4:01 PM
@ElizB My speech is slightly off and I tend to talk out of the same side of my mouth as my good ear, so I get the occasional funny look. I have great difficulty with people with accents. That, and the people who try to over-enunciate to "help" FACEPALM

@RichardU Oh yes, those enunciating people..... so helpful. /Sarcasm

@ElizB I'm deaf on the left side, and my last name is at the end of the alphabet. I had a teacher who sat everyone front to back, alphabetically, in descending order. So, I wound up in the back of the classroom with my good ear facing the wall. But that was okay, she would shout and over-enunciate when speaking to me. Just what every child wants, to have their problems brought attention to.

I had a doctor basically nod his head up and down, and over enunciate.... It took all my strength to get through that and not whack him on the head and tell him to hold his darn head still and speak normally and clearly!
@RichardU ugh, man.

@ElizB yes, I recall telling a few people "If you want to help me, stop trying to help me"

@RichardU yeah. I've said something along the lines of that.

4:06 PM
:(
@ElizB funny thing is, I talk overfast for most normal folks, so I end up... taaalkkiiinnnggg veeeeeerrrryyyyy sllllooowwwwlllyyyy

@ElizB I actually prefer nasty people to the ones who try to help. At least they treat you like everybody else, poorly. It's the do-gooders that I can't stand. God save us from the condescending compassion of those who torment us with the full assent of their consciences.

Other than one co-worker who ... well we totally are unable to communicate except via text

@JourneymanGeek you have to develop a sense of humor or become very very bitter.

@RichardU shrug Its work.
I do what I need to

When someone realizes I can't hear, and gets embarrassed, they'll often turn white and say "I'm so sorry!". I typically say "it's not your fault" We both laugh, and nobody is offended or embarassed

4:09 PM
Because my interpreters were here only for the first week of my internship, people were reluctant to approach me after the first few weeks.
after they realized that it's 100% fine to approach me for small talk it was fine

4:27 PM
@ElizB and of course, I don't know too much in ASL, beyond the naughty words and phrases.

@RichardU Yeah, heh. That's usually the first thing acquaintances try to get out of me. I don't do that :P or i teach them something benign when they think it's naughty. I get a laugh out of that

@ElizB I can curse people out in French, Russian, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Polish, German, ASL, and Japanese... oh, and English too, but that's not as much fun
Whooops, Hindi too.

A J
@RichardU Really?

@RichardU raises eyebrows Really? I don't know whether that should be cool that you know all these languages but that you know cuss words in each....

@AJ I've worked for many multinational companies. Insulting someone in Japanese is easy because all you have to do is leave out the honorific.

A J
4:34 PM
@RichardU I wonder which Hindi ones you know.

@RichardU Ah, huh

@ElizB LOL, well, it's the first things that people teach you. Often times, in the hopes that they can get you to accidentally say something embarrassing.
@AJ I can tell someone that they should have an unnatural relationship with their mother, sister, or a goat, for example.
At one place, my Indian coworkers sort of adopted me, and thought it would be funny to teach me how to curse

@RichardU That's funny... I'm way too serious to teach someone how to curse in ASL though haha

A J
@RichardU That's a wrong thing to teach. It'd be fun if they had taught you a song or a poem.

@ElizB Well, being a clown was how I learned to keep the bullies at bay.

A J
4:38 PM
@RichardU Is there any one you know in this video?

@RichardU I do use humor to keep ridiculous stuff at bay as well, but like I said I am way too serious to behave like a clown :) being a clown works for you, but not for me :)

@AJ well, it stared with one of my coworkers talking about another one (who's name I didn't know at that point) being named Ashok. The way they said it (also on my bad side), sounded like a curse word in German. Then, we ended up teaching each other.....
@AJ I'll have to check that on my phone. Youtube is blocked at work.

A J
@RichardU let me know then.

@AJ will do.
@ElizB Well, it's also to put forth an air of harmlessness. If people don't think you're a threat, they tend to leave you alone. It also provides you with a bit of an element of surprise if you ever need one. Nobody expects you to be able to go from silly to deadly serious.

@RichardU Yeah, heh. I do that sometimes, because when I joke around sometimes people don't expect it, and I make it sound serious, then change in a few seconds.

Q: How to tell students to not ask doubts

user74255I have very hectic schedule. I do not get time to read new subjects. I am working as teaching assistant for a subject which is very new to me. Material to teach arrives my email from mentor, just on the night before my presentation day and I prepare in hurry manner. Students in the class are ve...

Q: Dealing with extroverts

cinnamonI'm a really introverted person and conversations can quickly feel quite exhausting and mentally draining for me. Of course I like to have a social life and enjoy it to have nice chitchats with friends, acquaintance, colleagues, etc. - too a certain extend. But there are some extremely talkative ...

6:00 PM
Google is trying to tell me that air frying is still bad for you, like deep frying is, and I feel like every article I'm reading is making confusing statements to try to convince me of that. O.o Anyone here happen to be an expert on food science?
Oh, maybe I should see if that question has been asking on the cooking SE

@TheTinyMan Sorry, no. Fried food in general gets my stomach in a twist so I avoid it.
Don't know the answer to that.

I am a huge fan of how quickly and consistently this air fryer cooks food. xD And it involves zero oil, but I'm seeing articles saying that it's not good to cook things at the 300-400 degree (F) range...but baking cooks at that kind of temperature too, which they recommend as a healthier alternative?

@TheTinyMan That makes sense to me. I love roasting my veggies when I can
it makes sense that air frying is healthier

Yeah, I'm perplexed as to why I'm seeing so many articles saying it's not
well, that it's better than deep frying but is still bad for you

(shrugs)

6:04 PM
And they recommend sauteeing? Is it really better to stick my mushrooms in oil in a pan than to stick them in a hot bowl for less time?
I should wander over to cooking.SE xD

There's a lot of articles that say cochlear implants are bad and good
on both sides that is. Yeah, probably better there

@TheTinyMan It might have to do something with some vitamins etc. getting lost at high temperatures?

@Tinkeringbell Yeah, that's the best theory that I have so far, too...but then why would they recommend baking as an alternative? When I bake I also cook at similar temperatures as this air fryer, sometimes slightly higher!
But I guess I can see why sauteeing and stuff would be better

there's pros and cons for every method...
i personally prefer baking and sauteeing

@TheTinyMan this has some info on those harmful compounds that may be formed when airfrying healthline.com/nutrition/air-fryer#section4
But yeah, I don't know if it's to do with the oil you add for frying or just the high temp
It's almost chemistry at this point XD

6:14 PM
@Tinkeringbell Yeah, I saw that article, but it seemed pretty weak to me. The part that talks about "other potentially harmful compounds" concluded with "further research is needed," so that ultimately wound up sounding kinda propaganda-y to me. And the next section, talking about a host of other problems, conveniently left out the word "air" in front of the word "frying," which leads me to be suspicious of what was actually studied. You're right, though, it sure is!

@TheTinyMan Overall, I'd say airfrying is healthier than deep-frying... And maybe a little less healthy than cooking stuff or eating it raw. Depending on how often you use your fryer vs. other methods of cooking, I'd say don't worry ;)

@Tinkeringbell Well I'm thinking about using an air fryer to replace other methods of cooking for like 75% of my meals. The only thing that seems healthier to me is sauteeing and steaming. I'm told that boiling food removes the nutrients really badly too, and grilling and baking seem to have all the same problems, plus the problem of being slow, and of course, deep frying loads the food up with unhealthy stuff AND has all the same problems.
I asked about it in chat in cooking.SE but it seems like a ghost town over there xD

@TheTinyMan I could contact a CM for you XD they seem very fond of cooking :P

I choose to interpret "CM" as "Cooking Manager" right now. :-)
But nah, I'll wait until someone over there sees it in chat, or probably when I see their response tomorrow. ;-)

Just look around the site, and if there's nothing on the benefits/disadvantages of air frying on the site, you could just ask on their main site ;)

6:22 PM
Yeah I was thinking about that but I'm really gunshy about asking questions
I didn't see much - and nothing at all matched the search, including quotes, "air fry" since 2013

Looks like it'd be off topic..
The help center says questions like 'is cauliflower healthy' aren't welcome

Yeah, I struggle enough to identify what is or isn't OT here, I thought I'd go straight to chat for advice on whether or not the question would be OT there

Sounds like a good plan. ;)
Hope they'll find a way you can ask it

Asking questions on main site too hard -> ask in chat!

@El'endiaStarman Hahaha no, ask in chat whether your question would be fit for main ;)

6:29 PM
@Tinkeringbell For bonus points, be wishy-washy enough to imply that an answer in chat would be super cool, too! ;-)

Hey, everyone! I'm a regular at IPS, and am also known to cook, albeit poorly. :-) I've got a question and I'm not sure if it works better as an SE question or a chat question, about air fryers and healthiness. :-)
in The Frying Pan, 12 mins ago, by TheTinyMan
Basically - is air frying a food similarly healthy as baking or grilling that same food would be? I've seen a bunch of articles that claim that it's only a small step up from deep frying, but most of them seem to describe weaknesses, like cooking temperature, that also exist (or exist, worse) with something like baking or grilling.
I hate SE's aversion to questions that inspire discussion. :-P
Especially on the topic of IPS!

@TheTinyMan Trust me, it's for the better XD

@Tinkeringbell whines
Buuuuuuuut...!

@SmokeDetector Going once, going twice...
Gone!

6:44 PM
I thought it wasnt gonna rain till 4-5pm, and it's 2:45. Looking at the looming clouds and the hourly weather.... it's gonna rain at about 3pm to 7pm. I usually go home around 5pm. whoopee. XP
looks like i'll be stuck in the rain even if I dash out the door now.
i'll just stay and work.

7:02 PM
feels like a good time to take a tea break.

7:14 PM
Went to get hot water I started a few moments ago. Someone beat me to it. (bangs head on desk) whyyyyyyyy

Bring a Nerf blaster next time and show 'em who's boss.

@El'endiaStarman .... I have zero energy to even argue. I just went to get more water and put it in.
Monday-ing.
@El'endiaStarman That would be funny, though. I'd totally get fired and go out with a bang :P XD

Literally! :D

Also a good way to save money. No more school bills, because I got kicked out because I got someone with a nerf blaster during the last week of my internship.

"Your Honor, the blaster just...misfired."

7:22 PM
@El'endiaStarman psssh. wouldn't hold up for a second.

7:52 PM
I just heard someone sneeze. It literally sounded like a cat. 0.0

8:29 PM
@ElizB when I sneeze, everybody knows

@RichardU Same here.

8:56 PM
Made it past 9 pages of words on my paper! :D Still more to write! Feels good to make good progress. Also completed the bibliography. :D
I'm the last one at work to get out.... (shrugs) less noise and chatter! More focus!

9:13 PM
@ElizB Make sure to keep us updated :P

9:44 PM
Looked at the weather and decided it was a good time to go because heavier rain was due so i wanted to avoid that...

@ElizB Ugh! It rained here too today. But that was good, that means I didn't need to water the plants XD

Yeah!
@Tinkeringbell less work is nice :)

10:03 PM
muttering angrily it's raining but my feet got wet unexpectedly because some business wants to water the grass..... rrrgh
