Q: Asking out an intern at close of internship

user20910There is a intern at my company who has been there two months. During this time I've helped her briefly on a few projects and we have talked socially at work a little but mostly worked completely in different departments. She is the same age as me and will not be staying on with the company at th...

Q: How to convey (non-awkwardly) that its my birthday?

XtremeBaumerFirst off, I know that this question is very close to mine, but has no answer that would match my needs. Yesterday a colleague of mine had birthday and I didn't know about it until later that day where she brought in some food and sent an email to everyone. I felt pretty embarassed, as I alrea...

7:32 AM
yay no more bot feedback 😀
hey @avazula

Hi @Cash
Is it wanted not to have feedback?

@Cashbee that... just means I need to restart it

ahah okay
Hi Mith :)
How was your vacation @Cash ?

7:43 AM
@avazula best vacation ever
could have been longer though

:)
like all vacations :p

8:01 AM
@avazula I want that, but I think I am the minority in that opinion

@Cashbee Well, as a room owner you have the chance to be able to put those messages to trash :)

@avazula I am also able to kick users, but that doesnt mean we want rude users here just so we can make use of our privileges.
Keeping the room clean is work :D

@Cashbee Should I have compassion for you? :p

and I don't see why we need to know what the current fp-tp-counters are for each caught comment. That information is useless in this room. But anyway, I will drop that again now, I have already stated my position on this and if people want that feedback I will not cry any more about it. Sorry for bringing it up once more ^^

Hi @Chilly! :)

@avazula Hello there :)

@Cashbee No problem. I'll just label you as grumpy room guardian for now on :D
@Chilly how are you today?

@avazula I'm okay, a bit more together than I was yesterday and I had a good sleep last night

@avazula hehe i'm the grumpy cat cash

From what I've found for "grumpy bee" on the internet

8:21 AM
lol

@Chilly I'm glad :)

@avazula Thanks for checking in on me :) How're you?

@Chilly No problem. I've been there :) I'm great, thank you!
Tomorrow is a national holiday in France, yay!
Gonna see my sis

Oh that sounds lovely!

I'm glad because things are crazy at work right now, I switch from a meeting to writing a report. I could use a break :D

8:29 AM
Tell me about it, I'm trying to catch up after last week and there's so much to do I'm gonna need a holiday by the end of the week

Are you allowed to take a day off?

No, I can't unfortunately.. I have this Friday and the following Tuesday off but that's to study for my repeat exams

8:57 AM
Yeesh... Wish you luck :*

Thank you :* it's not going to be fun but at least I only have two to resit, I know a girl who has 14 T.T

Good lord that's a lot o_o

I know, the poor girl was sick for the whole year basically so couldn't sit any exams in January or May when we sat them so she has to sit them all now :s

in the system you're in, is it possible to pass certain courses and only redo the failed once next year?

@Imus Yes is it. I don't really know why she's putting herself under such pressure with 14 exams over 10 days when she's already said that she's just going to repeat the year anyways

9:06 AM
would probably be smarter to pick certain exams that look feasable

Like she could just sit the exams from one of the semesters now and repeat one semester next year

on the other hand, it could be nice to see each exam and how much you can get on it without really studying

Oh it definitely would be

so you know what to expect next year

True
But at the same time, 14 is a ridiculous amount.. They're all minimum 2 hour exams with some being 3 and 4 hours, I don't know how she's going to do it

9:08 AM
minimum as in: you can't leave earlier ... or it'll take that long at least to just fill it in?

Minimum as in you can't leave earlier
Bar one or two of them where I think you can leave after the first hour, but they're the ones where you either know the stuff and can answer in the hour or you don't so you know you'll be repeating the year
I'm slowly coming to the realization of just how intense my course is..

JAD
@Imus that could work, but if the gap in knowledge is too big, that wouldn't do much

@JAD Yeah that's the other side of it: it's nice to see the exams but if you're just sat there for 2-4 hours not knowing anything then it's pointless, you could be doing something more productive like studying for an exam you could pass so you don't have to worry about it next year or something
Plus the exam papers are made available in the days following the exam so you can still see the paper pretty soon after the exam

@Chilly In that case it's not really that useful to go to the exams you know you'll fail
Here we usually can't see the exam questions afterwards ... except from other students from memory

@Imus Yeah I know, I was trying to explain that to her yesterday but she wasn't seeing that. She's set on doing all the exams even though there's no way she could pass all of them, it's way too intense! She's going to burn out after the first 5 I'd say
Oh that's strange, I never knew that!

9:16 AM
@ava there's no hurry ^^

@Cashbee great :)

Well, since it's a lost year anyway for her I wouldn't worry too much about it. She'll either doesn't realise it and will have a normal year again next schoolyear or she does and saves herself a couple of courses

Yeah, she'll realise halfway through the exams I'd say
I hope she does for her own sake

hello :)

hi Jalapeno

9:28 AM
hello @Imus :)
@Chilly how's your bf's dad doing?
hello @avazula :)

@JalapenoNachos Hi there!

@avazula is Python as fun as they say? I might start learning it as a hobby :)

@JalapenoNachos Python is great to do amazing stuff when you have no idea what you're doing!

@avazula haha - kinda like Matlab?

@JalapenoNachos Yes, but way better

9:31 AM
ah, nice

python is like English spoken programming

Oh, that sounds awesome :)

givin' an example:
from PIL import Image
for image_path in TEST_IMAGE_PATHS:
image = Image.open(image_path)
image_np = load_image_into_numpy_array(image)
plt.imshow(image_np)
print(image.size, image_np.shape)
(Imagine the beautiful indent)
See? It's quite literal

Oh, very, very much like Matlab!
i'm excited - thanks for the encouragement :)

Nah, better ;)

9:33 AM
haha
I'll trust you as others have said the same to me too :)

:)
I don't really like it actually

really? how come?

But I'm very used to C-like languages ^^

Oh, right
you said that last time we spoke
you know,
you ever considered going into quant finance?

What? I don't know what it is

9:36 AM
Oh, like coding up trading strategies for a Wall Street company - a quantitative trading company. C++ seems to be a requirement for many of those jobs
Preferred over Java, it seems.
My friend makes like 500k USD doing it

I don't enjoy python.. I like my braces too much.
Silly point, but there it is.

@KasparKjeldsen Oh what language do you like best?

@JalapenoNachos Mmmh. Sounds to rigourous to me. I'm more of an explorer than a language expert :)
@JalapenoNachos The worst of all ... :p

When I get to choose I go with C#

That's what I said xD
(kiddin)

9:39 AM
But I won't lie. A lot of "I just want to knock out something quickly" is quicker in Python

@avazula it's nice that you know yourself well, in terms of your career interests :)
hmm both of you like C

@KasparKjeldsen Yep. That's why so many deep learning frameworks offer APIs in Python. Researchers are great in math but not in programming, so they use Python. Engineers that come after and use their work translate it in C++ to be close to the architecture :D
@JalapenoNachos I wouldn't say that :) I'm just very curious and this sounds like a career choice you commit to for a long period of time

@avazula ah, ok

@JalapenoNachos Programming is not my expertise field. I come from the electronics world :) so I wouldn't pretend I'm good at programming

@avazula oh

9:43 AM
Well, one of my bigger projects is essentially a giant calculator/number-cruncher. Since I'm optimizing the hell out of it, I'm going with what I know best. The bottle-necks I hit aren't due to the language though, but due to various data-sources it has to collect from.

@KasparKjeldsen what subfield?

Hi @KasparKjeldsen I like your name, I don't see my first name too often :)

@avazula do you know a lot of fourier analysis?
Hi @Cashbee :)

@JalapenoNachos Yup, that and all related stuff :)

@Cashbee I was looking through my photos today of when I was in Switzerland - we met a really cute St. Bernard dog, who was carrying a barrel around his neck

9:47 AM
@JalapenoNachos hey there 😀
@JalapenoNachos haha nice. where?

@JalapenoNachos A weird one. Benchmarking of the construction-sector in Denmark. Basically it accepts "custom" formulas (ie. weird math), and spits out interesting numbers, like for instance, what is the average delay on construction-projects in all of Denmark for (insert sub-group with various filters)

@JalapenoNachos Sorry I'm a bit late replying, was in a meeting! He actually passed away last Tuesday, thanks for asking though, it's appreciated

@Cashbee I believe lucerne - we spent a lot of time up in the swiss alps too. My pics are beautiful. I regret not doing dog sledding :(

@Cashbee Reminds me. I've been offered a job in Geneva yesterday. I asked my boyfriend if he wanted to move to Switzerland, he replied: "hell no, these guys are crazy"

@avazula ah, lucky you. I only ever got to do it for math classes - never in a physical context.

9:50 AM
@JalapenoNachos dog sledding in switzerland? I have never heard of that
@avazula yes we are xD

@KasparKjeldsen that sounds very analytics-ish and pretty cool, actually
@Chilly o gosh ... I'm really sorry to hear that ...

@Cashbee I wanted to see people yoddle :(

@JalapenoNachos Thanks, it was a shock alright but we're all as okay as we can be

You guys do it on a daily basis right?

@avazula my aunt is a yodeling teacher xD yodeling is so old-fashioned that it is cool again

9:56 AM
@Chilly that's good to hear - I'm really sorry ...

@Cashbee Hispter material

@avazula it's also from the mountain part of switzerland (and austria i guess), we in the flat part do not really yodel
yodeling is not the same when you don't do it in front of a mountain panorama.
2
or on top of a mountain

I get that :)
BRB, lunch time! A colleague of mine is leaving today. CU guys :)

@JalapenoNachos It's very appreciated, mais c'est la vie, these things happen sometimes. We have each other here though, we'll all get through it together :)
@avazula Enjoy lunch!

@Chilly yeah, true :)
@avazula enjoy :)
@Cashbee maybe it wasn't dog sledding that I saw * scratches head *

10:03 AM
@JalapenoNachos It is, though math with dates is my enemy.. We are not just date-diffing, but taking weekends, holidays, special days off into account, including at least the last 15 years or "holiday history", since we've actually moved/added/cancelled special days off in Denmark during those years. It's lovely.

@KasparKjeldsen oh

Oh. And weather. As in, if you are delayed and there was a big storm, it was probably not your fault that day

ah, ok

And that's just measuring time. Don't even get me started on flaws in the construction or accidents. Actually the only straight-forward metric we have is "customer satisfaction" ;)

@KasparKjeldsen That sounds really cool

10:08 AM
@KasparKjeldsen you're doing all of this in Python?

Nope, C# :)

oh
nice :)

Crunching the numbers every night on a server, as well as "on demand" when someone requests a document that needs updatering with the latest numbers. That server is not living a nice quiet life, hence I've nicknamed it the "torture server".

I nearly choked on my hot chocolate reading that

10:12 AM
@Chilly mmm hot chocolate :)
@Chilly I am ready for winter :)
@KasparKjeldsen I was wondering: why couldn't you just create a huge metrics spreadsheet in Excel, or many tabs of spreadsheets?

10:31 AM
@JalapenoNachos I love hot chocolate so much xD Oh same, I can't wait for winter to come around <3

@JalapenoNachos Excel seems ill-suited for doing 550-ish million calculations drawing from many many thousand construction-project-evaluation, pumping out 15.000 pdf files and population an online database in less then 2 hours :)
populating*

JAD
@JalapenoNachos There's a lot of things you can do in excel
doesn't mean it's the best tool for it

10:54 AM
@Mithrandir what did you think?

Q: How can I talk with my friend about her burn out problems when I disagree with some things she says?

CarolineI have a friend, Jane, mid-twenties, who is going to get married to Joe, mid-thirties. Joe has a good job, owns a house and generally has things 'in order'. Jane had several (short, low paying) jobs and an education without many job prospects. She moved in with Joe a couple of years ago, and w...

@KasparKjeldsen hahaha hilarious
@JAD ah, ok
@Chilly if I get hot chocolate at Starbucks, I always request 8 pumps of mocha :) and when I use cheap Swiss Miss + hot water, I usually need to use two packs of the Swiss Miss
so I love hot chocolate very much too :)

@JalapenoNachos You and I are the same person in regards to hot chocolate so :D

No problem. Actually, you had my +1 before the edit, since your answer could help other people. Welcome to IPS.stackexchange by the way — Taladris 1 min ago

@Chilly haha :)

@JalapenoNachos did you just say hot water?

@Cashbee yeah :(

try milk

for the cheap Swiss Miss packets
oh
hmm
never tried? at Starbucks they use steamed milk
but I never tried using hot milk for Swiss Miss

@ElizB didn't listen to it yet, I've been a bit busy

JAD
11:14 AM
@Cashbee oh yeah

I don't know exactly what swiss miss is, maybe they actually intended to use it with water

JAD
over here at the coffee machines, they have sachets of chocolate powder for choco milk
they're meant to use with hot water, but so much better when used with foamed milk

our coffee machines here also make hot choclate with water, but i have no idea why

JAD
well, it can work if there is powdered milk in the choco

11:17 AM
ok, swiss miss has milk in the powder. shakes head sadly

I've always wanted to experiment: putting a couple Godiva bars into a cup, and then filling it with a half cup of steamed milk or hot water

@Mithrandir ah, okay! This one i think is the best of Nick's covers.

@JalapenoNachos it is customary in many european countries to serve hot chocolate this way in coffeshops

@Cashbee yes! right, it has 10% calcium in it, iirc
@Cashbee really?? that's awesome

@JalapenoNachos its very very sweet usually. but awesome

11:19 AM
yummmm :)

and one more note about swiss miss - just try it out with milk instead of water once, I'm sure it's better ^^

"morning"

hey @Marcus
oops i guess i pinged too many users just now >.<

likely, yes

11:28 AM
@Cashbee ok :)
@Cashbee don't worry - ain't no moderators here right now
you're safe :)
@Marcus wdup

trying to appear busy ;-)

haha, good idea

while listeningto 80s hits... currently its Madonna - Holiday

@Marcus when our boss came around, the code word for us to look busy was "banana" we all looked out for each other to see when and where he was coming from
"banana" and all of a sudden we stopped talking sports and talked client issues

If my boss comes around I'm just leaving the window open! Doesn't care as long as work gets done ;)

Men at Work - Down Under

@JAD Even when there's powdered milk in the hot chocolate I'll still add milk to it - make it with hot water like it says then top it up with milk and it makes it really creamy and lovely!

11:57 AM
@Chilly (I have never had choco powder with milk in it, but) I would definitely use only milk, no water
or just buy some without milk xD
i cant stand watery hot chocolates

@Cashbee I get this really lovely mint choco powder but you have to make it with water because it gets too clumpy with milk so I make a paste using the water and then use steamed milk and it is glorious xD

@Chilly can you reveal the product name or is that a treasured family secret? :D
i love mint with chocolate
also, have you tried mixing with hot milk directly (instead of cold milk)? some choco powders i know mix way better with hot milk and maybe that is the case with this one too

12:14 PM

@Marcus that's one of my favs
Oh, IPS Comment Bot is back!

@avazula how about spice girls? they have been quite popular at the time

12:31 PM
@Marcus Mmh, maybe for fun, otherwise I'm more a rock / hard-rock / metal gal :)

i used to be into that as well but as i grew older the pop songs got me
somehow most of the metal bands appeared ridiculous all of a sudden

@avazula youtube.com/watch?v=DFK1ivuS1k0 (dogs playing metal)

@Cashbee Everyday I like you more. Please stop xD

e.g. when i listened to Linkin Parks album Hybrid Theory i found all songs are about heartbreak in one form or another and it sounded whiny to me
and i liked them when i was a teen
idk what happened

@Marcus I don't think that's either rock / HR / metal, they're pretty unclassable :)
I was a big fan back in my teen years too

12:36 PM
when they made that album they were considered Nu Metal
but it was just an example

JAD
heh, good luck trying to define different strands of metal
2

"My tastes go from Dimmu Borgir to Ghost" lol
I actually got into metal very recently, like 3 months ago

JAD
@Marcus you ever heard of Gloryhammer?

It was at the time when I got fed up of my colleagues. Helped me go quieter through my days xD

JAD
>quieter

12:39 PM
I loved sonata arctica when i was younger

JAD
>metal

A J
evening!

JAD
@Cashbee hell yeah

@AJ Hi there! :)

i still do but i somehow forgot them a bit

JAD
12:39 PM
Seen them live last year
I listen a lot of Sonata Arctica, Dream Theater and Symphony X. And a bit of Nightwish

@JAD So you're quite into symphonic?

JAD
a bit, although Symphony X isn't all that symphonic :P

ahah :p

JAD
my favorite song of theirs:

listening

12:44 PM
@JAD symphony X and dream theater are also awesome bands, i do not like nightwish somehow though

@Cashbee have you ever listened to their version of The Phantom of the opera?

i love the technical aspect of dream theater
@avazula nope, 1 mom

JAD
@Cashbee I really like their new singer

@JAD oh?
didnt know about that

@Cashbee what?

JAD
12:45 PM
She's Dutch, so I'm a bit biased.

@avazula "No, 1 moment please (listening now)"

@JAD Dutch metal sure is interesting to listen to
@Cashbee Ah, okay. Didn't understand what mothers had to do with it

hehe

JAD
I thought their latest album was a bit hit and miss.
@Cashbee Yeah, I'm getting a bit into drumming through Rock Band, and their songs are really fun to play

@avazula I don't know what it is but I just don't like them that much.. maybe I just don't like female metal singers.
@JAD haha rockband is awesome

12:50 PM
@Cashbee I just like a couple of songs of theirs but this one introduced me to the magic of eargasm xD
@JAD Drums... my childhood dream ._.

A J
how we doin' on this fine Tuesday evening?

@JAD wow but the drums on dream theater arent easy ^^
he is one of the best drummers in the world

JAD
@Cashbee I'm not saying I'm completely able to drum them

@AJ I'm great, thx :) you?

@AJ hello @AJ

12:52 PM
@AJ Just got into work, just before 9am here. :)

A J
@avazula Good. Just finished a hectic part of my project.
@Cashbee yo!

@ElizB Hi beautiful!

A J
@ElizB You're at work before time?

JAD
Especially the Metropolis album is pretty doable (except for Dance)

@AJ Great! Good to hear :)

12:52 PM
@avazula .... thanks :)

@ElizB (I need to stop calling you sweet names xD)

@AJ Not my doing, my bus arrives at the stop around 8:35 and my walk to the office is around 7-10 minutes. plenty of time to see if the local momma duck and her babies are around. They were on the other side of the reflection pool
so no pictures of them today

I'm very tactile IRL, I guess saying sweet things is the Internet transposition :p

A J
@ElizB oh
@avazula Despite being busy, I took time out of my schedule to answer a question. :D

@avazula hehe maybe. I don't mind so much but it's kinda strange on the internet someone calling me a name that I usually hear from my mom, or my husband :P

12:55 PM
@AJ Oh! I need to check :D
@ElizB Oopsie. I will find sth else then :p

@JAD nope, but Hammerfall could ring a bell

@avazula do let me know. It made me feel good, just surprised me a little.

JAD
@Marcus heh, actually seen them live. Gloryhammer as supporting act of Hammerfall. Called themselves the HammerHammer tour

@avazula Metal was a thing for me when i had to get strong emotions out of my system. maybe thats what happened when i grew older

JAD
Basically, Gloryhammer is very very veeeeery cheesy powermetal about a fantasy kingdom, space wizards and all that jazz.

12:58 PM
almost all powermetal is like that :D

@ElizB I'll try not to do it everytime, please also know that nice words is my way to express my affection :)

JAD
@Marcus yeah, but this is tongue-in-cheek cheesy

@Marcus I had the same. Used to play Iron Maiden out loud when it was the closest thing to hard rock I knew :p

JAD
they share some band members with Alestorm, if that rings a bell

@avazula Of course! one other friend of mine expresses her affection by touching, so she held my hand, rubbed my arm, back, etc.

12:59 PM
Manowar (lol)

@JAD I prefer pirate metal :v

JAD
@avazula So Alestorm? :P
