Q: How can I be more convincing when it comes to my words?

easy mathI have a big problem with people that know me. I do have slight anger issues (like 0-90 in 1 second, and 90-100 in 10), and I know some people (my friends) that would irritate me just for their amusement. I usually give a threat (i.e. if you keep doing that I will pour water on your head) but ca...

I am most certainly guilty of this :/ perhaps its time to give out some more flowers... or grilled poop sandwiches I guess?
"And little makes me sadder than comments on answers saying, “Don’t answer questions like this – it encourages them.” Now, some questions are off-topic. (I’m genuinely sorry, but we simply can’t explain how a glass pitcher can smash through a brick wall with no apparent injuries; ---
--- we are a programming site.) But it’s totally cool to answer questions without giving a grilled poop sandwich about exactly what’s allowed. It’s fine to volunteer in one way without being expected to read and enforce every rule and meta discussion since forever." stackoverflow.blog/2018/04/26/…

@Jesse I have given comments like that. Never as blunt
We usually just say "please don't answer questions that don't comply with our homework policy"
It's bureaucratic, comprehensible and nice enough

8:13 AM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ That sort of response is exactly what they were talking about. And I have done it plenty too. I think rather than saying it nicely, this post is suggesting that we should not say anything at all. If a user wants to volunteer to answer bad questions then they are suggesting that it is totally fine and to apprehend them for doing so is contributing to the unwelcoming appearance
voting to delete, or pushing for the soon to be relevant updates is fine, but to tell them not to answer is being called an unwelcoming form of moderation. I was not aware of this implication but am happy to be a bit more laid back and give it a shot

Q: How to deal with strong political disagreements with my sensitive girlfriend?

Ivan TalanovMe and my girlfriend (both in our early 20s) disagree a lot on various political issues in and out of our country, and those disagreements cause her a lot of grief as she is a very sensitive person and the beliefs she holds are, while important to her, hard for her to defend in an argument, which...

Q: How to peacefuly deal with a loud religous group

E. HuckabeeThis isn’t really an inter-personal question. It mostly has to do with me and my family against another religious group. I’m guessing you have never left America? (I don’t mean any mean assumptions I just have a few simple things to explain) The culture here is very passive. Simply confronting them and asking them to tone it down won’t do it. They won’t listen to one white guy asking them politely to tone it down. As a Christian, I strongly disagree with their views. Labeling all of us under one category is probably not a good idea. — E. Huckabee 18 secs ago

@Tinkeringbell How's your magik training going?

@avazula Finished. I'm guessing(and hoping) I'll have some time for self-study next week, and then I'd hopefully go work for a new customer the week after :)

@Tinkeringbell Yay! Congrats :)

Hahaha it wasn't hard or anything ;-) Doesn't really feel like an accomplishment, to be honest :) But I am glad it was that easy :D

@Tinkeringbell it feels to me that once you've learned one language (and practiced for a bit), it becomes easier and easier to learn more similar stuff

@avazula For me, it does. For others, not so much.

2:10 PM
@Tinkeringbell Really? I had no idea. Yet I was terrible back in the days I was starting programming Java!

@avazula I did classes with an older man that started in a different language, learned magik later on, but took the classes for the second time because, well, he's... struggling with it.
It kinda seems he can't think the way a programmer thinks when programming in magik

@Rainbacon I've been offered a job in California recently in the SV, AFAIK they are desesperately looking for engineers. Don't know if they would have offers for non-OO languages programmers though ...

Most of the people I've met who do non-OO started out at their companies doing OO and then managed to convince their superiors that non-OO could be better for some things. I met a couple of people at a meetup who do Haskell and they said their team started with one guy who wrote a small application in Haskell and then it worked so well that his boss let him keep writing Haskell and now there's a whole team that does it.

@Rainbacon This is more or less what happened to me. I'm supposed to be an electronics & computer engineer, have mostly studied (embedded-)C, assembly and VHDL, yet all job offers I've had so far were like "OMG YOU KNOW C++?!"

user15026
@ArtOfCode What's the d mean? I assume deca-something?

@Ash decimal

decimal

user15026
Ah, yeah that would make sense

"x" would be "hexidecimal"
Now that makes no sense :P

8:40 PM
hexadecimal, if you want to be pedantic :P

it should be "xd", so you would be die laughing every time you formatted a number that way. "16axd", "cdaxd"

@Pheo That would be confusing because d is a valid hexadecimal digit

But "x" is not. Anything after "x" is checked, and if what is after "x" is only a "d", its hexadecimal

It would also violate the single-character convention

A quick perusal of the internet says that "0x" was choosen because for a long time the only bases used were binary and octal. Octal numbers were prefixed with a 0. When c was created an x was added to follow the same convention and represent hexadecimal. Nobody seems to know why they chose x instead of h

8:47 PM
011   // 9  : octal
0b11 // 3   : binary
0x11 // 17  : hex
11    // 10 : decimal
x_x Numbers are just messed up
0xd123456789abc..d dangit @ArtOfCode you're right

0o11 is the ES6 standard for octal, for consistency

"BOX" in order of values when the suffix 11 is used. Intresting.
@Rainbacon Maybe that's why they chose "x"?
"BOH" Just doesn't have a ring to it at all.

Q: How do I approach a girl to tell her is stained by her menstruation?

HooseI was working on my work space today and a female partner came at my place to tell me something about our job. So, when she gave me some information that I needed, she left. Suddenly, when she was going on her way to her work space, I saw a stain in her white jeans. No doubts that was her period...

@Tinkeringbell how do I distinguish mod Tinkering and friendly neighborhood Tinkering?

(Tinkeringbell has a ring to it) Ahahaha

@scohe001 I RAISE MY VOICE WHEN IM SERIOUS :)
Hahaha I guess there's no clear distinguishing, unless I'm doing clearly moderator stuff like suspending people :P
I'd love to be able to still post my opinion in chat or on meta, without it being seen as the absolute truth because of the diamond. I guess if I want to pull rank, I'll just start with 'as a moderator '

@Tinkeringbell (Ask a few other famous mods in the private room, they have solutions)

Hahaha fair enough, I suppose this is part of the weight that the diamond adds to your shoulders.

9:10 PM
Uh... I guess that's another assumption of mine.

@Tinkeringbell Kinda scary, isn't it?

There's a difference between 'you just answered an off-topic/duplicate question, bad you!' and 'Hey, I noticed that you answered this, thank you for wanting to help everyone out! Sadly, this question is a duplicate of ... and we'd like to keep answers all in one place. If you'd like to, you could delete your answer here and answer <the question linked as duplicate>'

Or 'Hey, thank you for wanting to help out! I'd just wanted to point out to you that this site has a certain scope, and this question got closed as not being in that scope. I'm just checking if you were aware of this?'

user15026
There are ways to express negative things (such as why a question might logically need to be closed) in a way that allows for kindness, yes :)

Specifically for duplicates, mods can merge, sometimes avoids that whole need.
But yeah, for scope issues, it's possible to convey "best not to answer questions like this" in ways that make it clear you're not faulting someone for not knowing.
