@Rainbacon There's a meta about it, so I'd like to refer them to that... :) My go-to comment in such cases is something like ' <some short form of nicety>. Answers on this site are expected to [address Interpersonal Skills](meta-link). Right now, this reads more like a life-hack to me. If you think all Interpersonal approaches will fail, could you please explain why and how? Preferably, [such answers are backed up with experience](meta-link).

Those are good, I especially like the link to hde's answer

As for the back up, I use the usual ones: interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/a/1611/1599 , interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/a/191/1599 or interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/a/183/1599. The last one mainly if I see someone struggling to effectively add their personal experience, the other two to explain that it is encouraged

Do rep losses for users being removed not show up in the activity tab of your profile anymore?

@Rainbacon Don't know? Are you on the reputation tab?
Did you get a notification?

I didn't get a notification. I had 28 rep go missing over night. (I'm assuming that it's 3 upvotes and one downvote from a user that was deleted, though I couldn't be sure)

5:10 PM
@Rainbacon It can also be that one of your answers was deleted or you just downvoted a lot of answers :P

I have downvoted several answers, but not that many.

You can go to your answers, and at the bottom of the page you can see recently deleted answers... is there anything there? (I'm not sure if it only shows self-deleted stuff though)

Ah, that was it. I had an answer deleted
I'm kind of curious as to why that question was deleted. interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/11832/…

@Rainbacon Honestly, I think we were just trying to clean up some low voted closed questions
That weren't being improved upon
maybe this one still attracted comments.

5:34 PM
@Rainbacon that seems like it could actually make a good question if someone got it into shape

What is this comment flagging that everyone is talking about? Can I participate?

@Stacey Yes, Please!

What do I do?
lol, I'm oblivious

Oke, you see the message the bot just posted, above? From IPS Comment Bot?
Click on the '1 min ago' part of that message

ok

5:37 PM
Hover your mouse between the 1 and the actual text from the comment, and click the little flag symbol that pops up
Then you can click on a reason why that comment should be deleted, in this case, 'no longer necessary'

ok
huh, I didn't even notice those flags before

The caveat is that you probably want to focus on the really obvious ones and the ones in here that others are likely flagging (since enough flags deletes it automatically), because the mods are overloaded.

We're pretty strict about what we allow in the comments given how easy it is for a comments section to explode.

so the bot tries to figure out which ones should be deleted?

^ I was typing that with more words. Also, rude/abusive is used for the comments that are rude or abusive, since if people post 3 or more of those (and have them deleted as such) they're automatically flagged for moderator attention
@Stacey Yes. And it posts only a subset of all the comments posted daily on IPS in here, those that match regexes like '+1'.

5:41 PM
@Stacey The bot uses some very simple pattern matching to identify comments that are likely candidates for flagging.

So, it's good to keep in mind that this is entirely regex based, and that there will be false postives :)

Basically, we'll probably shout out if it could use more flags ;)
interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/13221/… Like this one too... and the one underneath it for who-ever is in here and still has flags ;)

If you look on your profile there's a section called impact, that shows you some statistics about your impact on the site. One of them shows you how many helpful flags you have made.
You can click on that to see a breakdown of all the flags you have raised by type, and see the status of a particular flag, and whether it has been found to be helpful or not.

5:48 PM
so basically the one I'll almost always choose is the "no longer necessary" one. Unless someone is being rude

@sphennings Mine is about equivalent to the meteor that killed off the dinosaurs :P

@Stacey Pretty much.

@Stacey, this is the general information from SE on comment voting and flagging: https://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/17364/how-does-comment-voting-and-flagging-work

And this is a meta I recently answered about the kinds of comments this site tends to get, and why they can be flagged: https://interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/a/2759/1599

6:03 PM
@EmC Yeah, I was actually excited when I saw the question because I thought it could be a good example question. It seems unlikely to get salvaged by the OP since it was closed a month ago and never edited.

interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/13259/… This one can use some no-longer-needed flags. It's not suggesting anything to improve the question

6:19 PM
@Stacey and if you're interested, you can pop into the closet and watch the stream of new comments

@Tinkeringbell And it's gone

@Mithrandir I don't suppose you could incorporate the test that Bhargav was doing to have the bot specifically mention new comments on inactive posts?

It's probably possible. Do you want them posted in here?
!!/notifications

I think that it was a pretty minimal number, so that probably wouldn't create a lot of noise.

What time frame? Like, after it's a month old?
cc @thesecretmaster because you're the one who does all the work :P

6:25 PM
Maybe start with inactive for two weeks... A new answer shouldn't set off triggers if the question gets additional comments, necessarily...

!!/reports

regex_match: true
magic_comment: false

@IPSCommentBot this would probably be best as a new thing like inactive_post
@Catija so, probably whenever TSM gets around to it.

No worries.
:D

Because I don't know anything about Ruby ;P

Q: I want my family to be different, how can I affect them?

MassimoFirst off, I know that I cannot change others. I am not asking for that. I can only change myself, but how? My family seems to have many of the qualities I don't enjoy. I will go through all of them specifically, and the environment it creates, and then the environment I would like to see. My...

Q: How do I tactfully tell someone that someone else continually makes mistakes?

Canada - Area 51 ProposalI've been emailing with a government department's employee who continually supplies wrong information. How do I tell his superior this decisively but tactfully, without making him look bad? I can't simply quote the wrong information to hint to his mistakes without saying so, as this: will be t...

@ExtrovertedMainMan a.) this seems like a phrasing request b.) this is definitely going to need more context
So raise a flag, don't call them out in public...

:( I was just wondering aloud, but I guess you're right.
Lemme rephrase it. It's hard to decide when to flag for behavior. Is there any guidance on that anywhere?

user15026
I'm not sure what you mean exactly by flag for behaviour

@Tinkeringbell There isn't any.

Before flagging, I would recommend asking yourself "What do I think the mods would/can do after getting such a flag?"
In other words, what's the goal of flagging it?

7:01 PM
@HDE226868 That's hard, because I don't know what a mod can or is willing to do...
@Ash I've been told a few times to just raise a custom moderator flag if I see repeated behavior that's detrimental to the site. Flag the behavior, not the person

@Tinkeringbell I can't find a duplicate to their most recent question, not even using their meta questions to point towards potentially deleted questions.
I wouldn't be surprised if this was them stuck in the same bureaucratic mire though.

Also . . . keep in mind that if a user has exhibited what you believe to be problematic behavior over a long period of time, we might be aware of it already. Inaction prior to a point doesn't equate with unawareness.

@HDE226868 I can't really smell that. Anyhow, I guess I just have to figure this one out for myself by raising flags and seeing how they end up then.

Q: How should we handle questions where it is suspected the OP is being abused?

IceCFirst off I would like to say that I am aware that the stack exchange site has an official policy on posts that are suicidal or seeking professional help but I feel this may be slightly different. My question is what should we(especially lower rep users) do if we find a post where we suspect th...

Q: What should I do with a somehow unstable girlfriend?

mertyI've a girlfriend, we've been together for more than 3 years but not in a continuous manner. On general terms, it's very nice to be with her, except for the fact that she sometimes gets too unstable in my opinion, not enough to want to run from her, but enough to have serious doubts about having ...

Q: Why was my comment deleted when it asked for clarification of a question?

sgfIn the question Politely refusing to validate veiled bigotry, I asked (after, admittedly, having a somewhat lengthy discussion in the comments with the OP, which the mods duely deleted, and which I want to apololgize for) the OP for clarification about his question and suggested that he clear up ...

Many SEs are happy to leave chatty comments around provided there's not too many of them and then go and move all of them to chat/delete them all when they start getting out of hand. Is there really a need to moderate comments so much stricter here?

@sgf I might just let your meta question get answers?

TL;DR: yes there is

also many other SEs are pretty strict about chatty comments, answers in comments, and so on. It's funny, I've seen users on several sites (including one I moderate) say that all those sites are way stricter than normal, and I'm not sure how abnormal it actually is.

@Cascabel I was not complaining honestly, and I really just asked my meta question out of curiosity. But it seems like mods are overwhelmed by comment flags already, so I thought it might be practical or even necessary to have a laxer policy.
I'm mainly coming from Academia, and they have tons of comments everywhere.
@ArtOfCode Do you have a slightly longer version of that?

not really

@sgf As a mod on this site, I'd rather people help us get rid of all of the unnecessary, chatty comments than leave them sitting around, and if that means I have to ask for more help, I'll ask (and have). This site has a comment problem and the solution isn't "ignore them". The solution is "find a way to reduce the number of comments posted in the first place".

sgf
@Catija But doesn't the odd chatty comment help establish a sense of belonging that will lead to more comitted users to help you? If you take out all the human interest from a site, and people feel like they can't express themselves at all besides asking and answering, won't they be much more likely to leave and never come back?

There are 100 comments on that question you're talking about. Please, tell me how many is "the odd"?

sgf
@Catija I'm not talking about that particular question. Sorry if I gave that impression. I'm very much in favor of sending whole discussions to chat or deleting them outright.

11:08 PM
Point is that "100 comments" is the rule, not the exception. It happens far too often on this site to be lenient about it all the time.

Most of the questions here do have "the odd" comment on them. We're not draconian and we don't have the time to police them all. When it gets out of hand or if the comments tend towards answers-in-comments, they get culled. Mods get auto-flags at 20 comments on a post. Sometimes, that's the first notice we get.

Also comments beget comments. It's not foolproof, but removing some comments can help avoid getting a zillion more.

sgf
I see. So it isn't "flag any comment that isn't strictly speaking unnecessary", then?

Nope.

sgf
Well, then, good to know. I was ready to go on a spree.

11:15 PM
deletion doesn't always mean it never should've been posted either, plenty of things serve a purpose then can go away

Yep. Good comments that cause the post to be edited get removed when they've served their purpose, otherwise they may signal to others that the post is still lacking some detail that's already in it.

@sgf If you want to be helpful, don't contribute to the problem by posting unnecessary comments, and remove your comments once they have served their purpose.

where is it appropriate to challenge a questions frame, without offering the solution to this alternate frame
its naa, but im not sure if it warrants a comment either
i mean, technically its asking for an improvement on the question... for it to be completely re-written from a new frame
