Sorta like this question, except I'm on the other end (kinda).
I am a high school senior in the United States, and Prom is coming up. Earlier this month, I asked this girl, Alice (also a senior), if she would like to attend with me; though she unfortunately was not initially planning to attend ...
It may be my perception, but it seems that bigots have taken to reframing their bigotry as arguments about other supposedly more polite/civil subjects.
Rather than talking about subjects like race they talk about "political correctness" and "free speech"
Rather than talking about homophobia, th...
This seems more like a commentary on the question asked than an answer to it. You've made a lot of assumptions that apaul was talking specifically about SE, despite there being no mention of it in the question. If the question is indeed about SE then it should be moved to meta and that should be clarified. Unless the question is edited to specifically be about SE then this answer should be removed. — Rainbacon1 min ago
@Magisch Yeah, it's a pretty expensive backpack and I dunno if I'll get the stains out. In the meanwhile, my stuff is in a plastic bag and I just got a trash bag to put the backpack in... It stinks
Long story short, My girlfriend is pregnant, and her family (excluding her dad) already knows the situation, and they say I am free to chose whatever path I take, either do the obligation as a father, or leave her family be (including my child). I have a stable job, no house and car nor cash yet ...
@Magisch I think I had enough trouble with it already. I don't have her contact details, so it's too late for that anyways.
I'm just mad that people think it's a good idea to take a sick child on a bus full of people, so full that there isn't even room to move once it starts puking
@ExtrovertedMainMan oof... the comments were pretty harsh, way to kick an already depressed OP in the balls with some reality... There is a reason we don't allow questions that ask us to make OP's decision for them
@Jesse I mean, yeah. But OP was also asking (from what I can gather) how he can ditch a girl he got pregnant because he's not feeling like providing for the family he started yet.
You're bound to get at least a few "what the hell do you think you're doing there" kind of responses. Considering that, it stayed really civil.
@Jesse -Harsh? I think only the first comment about "making excuses" was a little harsh. I just told him to treat that depression, through professional help.
@Magisch If there is a clearly unprepared pregnancy between a couple that has broken up then there are some very large decisions to make on both sides. It is not our place to say "what the hell do you think you are doing" no matter what your moral compass tells you, it is OP's decision. vtc and leave it at that
I gave this question a +1 because I believe it is a very important question for all sorts of minorities that desire to defuse 'hate' speech, assuming that the goal is to win the hearts and minds - or, at least, the grudging acceptance - of the audience, not of the bigots themselves. As a member of such a minority, I'd be very interested in answers, as the amount of vitriol especially on social media and the internet is staggering. — GretchenV1 min ago
@Magisch One is mine: Basically because the OP was so adamant that this is not the question they want to ask... And they kept poking everyone in comments to answer the original question as well.
@Magisch where is the +10 button ;) interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/13194/… only thing i wanted to add is that your paragraph structure is really off, its a clear frame challenge so structure it like one! you only need to address the goals and how the suggested solution is not best way to achieve those goals once. you have looped back around like 3 times xD and it gets a bit tedious
The context is more clear now, but the question is still unclear. It reads like you're actually trying to have a blanket solution to regain trust but aside from the fact that there's no way to do that quickly, it also sounds like in your situation there's some very difference things going on than 'simple lies'. — Cronax11 secs ago
Area51 shows statistics for all the beta sites. It shows questions per day, percentage of answers etc., The statistics for visitors per day is not updated correctly on Area 51.
Above are the stats for mythology If we see the stats on stackexchange.com, the stats for visitors per day are diff...
I recently graduated college and I am now working as a programmer at a startup tech company for a year. I'm a competent programmer, but I'm definitely not a rock-star.
When I'm meeting other young adults or college students and I tell them what I do they often seem impressed and ask something...
So... given that I've already flagged each one, the more people who go through and flag each one the more likely it'll be that they'll be deleted without mod intervention.
@Magisch it's a bit annoying on this site - as evidenced by the sheer number of disputed flags I have - but without using the tools we have, we can't do anything.
I'd like to see you eventually be able to become a mod, because I think you'd be an asset. But there are things that you really need to work on before that happens.
@Magisch I got this one on Puzzling, when I was adding an answer, but due to internet issue, I couldn't. Then a series of events happened, so I couldn't complete my answer. In that duration, I got a couple of downvotes, that LQ comment, and a comment from mod.
@Magisch That's the thing... What I'm saying is that taking them too seriously isn't good. Taking them seriously is a good thing, but the occasional declined flag is not a huge deal. Raise a meta about it, talk it out with a mod, or whatever, then put it behind you.
I've had around 200 flags declined over the last few years.
For me, for every declined flag I need to either find and correct the mistake that led to me raising it, or find out why it was wrongfully declined and make enough of a stink so it doesn't happen again (within reason)
@Magisch If we want more consistent use of the review queues, you could bring up a few posts on meta, explain why they didn't meet the guidelines and ask people to be more conscientious when working the queues... but you're not going to prevent that, not at this time. Your best bet is to raise the flag, have it declined, put it in the chatroom, have us discuss/delete it and move to meta
@Magisch I got a few declined comment flags, just because I raised the 'this whole thread can probably go' on the 1 useful comment that can stay ;)
It's those where the only explaination is "well I could have accepted that but I misclicked" or "I don't know probably unlucky I handled it and not the other mod" that annoy me
consistency is important. The system expects you to not get declined flags (they count against you in a couple of ways) and so every single declined flag should be my fault and my fault alone
Right now, I'm mostly worried about the three outstanding post flags :P Two of them were for behavior, and those people are suspended now, yet the flags not yet accepted :/
sure if they want to that's probably going to be fine but it's not like it'll affect us here until then or if we had any input on the decision so it's pointless to dwell on it
It's time for me to leave Stack Overflow. I don't know my timeframe yet, but I'm looking for my next thing.
Seeking a community-focused engineering role. If you have ideas, get in touch. DMs are open.
It's also easy to lose sight of what you've achieved. I find taking a step back and evaluating to be beneficial. When you're involved in the journey, milestones blur together somewhat.
Kinda old-fashioned, but the newest version of Smallworld support Java. They eventually want me to get the old farts that are now in the GEO practice accustomed to Eclipse and Java..
Oooh! That sounds way more 'useful' than my dad. He's an ... I don't even know what it's called in English. He makes some of those big grey boxes full of wires that are used to control e.g. filters and temperature of a swimming pool, he does the wiring stuff. If he needs stuff programmed he comes to me :P
@Mithrandir You confirmed something I've thought for a while. There are probably better avenues better suited to my personality to apply myself productively to then SE. I'll take a hike outside of looking up answers on SO. So long.
@Stacey Yeah, at least when he talks about it, it sounds difficult ;) Although I always think of engineering as being the whole thing, including designing, building and programming the stuff? He 'just' does the building part
@Tinkeringbell there's like a ton of different specialities. I specialise in programming a specific device in a specific language and do very little outside of that
