Q: What to do if I find a woman already waiting for an elevator?

BlaszardWhen I try to get on an elevator, sometimes a woman is already waiting for the elevator. There is no other person around there. Then, after the woman recognizes I'm also going to get on, she suddenly walks away and starts to wait for the next one. It is clear that she misses it not because she r...

@Tinkeringbell I'm. having trouble understanding what's wrong... ?
Seems pretty tame from the translation I could find.

Nah... we Dutch people have a category of music thats dubbed 'wrong'... Because things get sortof embarrassing when you tell people you're a fan of it...

@Tinkeringbell Oh... I could definitely see how it would be that kind of "wrong" thought you were saying it was crass or inappropriate lol

@apaul oh no...:-)
Not what I meant ;-)

@Tinkeringbell Like you said you were a little sheltered, so it was an easy mistake to make ;)
@Tinkeringbell if you would like to checkout some much more "wrong" music, try Wizo.

6:13 AM
@Tinkeringbell A category named "wrong"?
o_O

Not for the easily offended: youtu.be/pCaZ8tt4lEY

6:31 AM
I'm new I don't know if I have enough rep to actually participate yet so shout out if you see this. thanks
guess not

I am interested in c++

@Kuhan This is a chat for interpersonal relations. I think you're looking for one of the Stackoverflow chat rooms

okay thanks
is that chat.stackoverflow.com

yes

@internet-entity we see your messages. What's up?

6:39 AM
I'm very happy to find a place with some intelligent people to converse with. Im not real smart but I can't find anyone around who is interested in topic other what they had for breakfast
If I try to talk to them about science basically they run away screaming like I'm the devil
This is not a good question to start with I'm fully aware of that. However, it's what's on my mind today. And I know you can never say this to a scientist. Does anyone have any feelings or facts in relation to how I are universe or galaxy coincides a lot with an atom.
I'm trying to say is they appear to be the same thing
Don't think I'm a nut. I came across some empirical data today that was very convincing

Not to discourage you too much, but this room has more to do with Interpersonal Skills. If you're after a more science based discussion you may want to try your luck on physics, or world building.

What's up?

well, have to work again... and you?

@apaul I wrote up that question from yesterday: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/6814/…
Feel free to chime in

A J
@Termatinator same. at work

7:18 AM
so? anyone watching "designated survivor"?

@Termatinator I did watch the first couple of episodes
But it feels like every episode they contrive a new scenario to create tension when it's really out of place

Q: Apologizing when you've hurt a stranger's feelings badly

MagischYesterday in vocational school I (mostly inadvertently) hurt someone's feelings very badly. In our IT class in vocational school, there is just one girl. She's pretty overweight. I don't know her well at all, essentially only from school, which is only once a week, and even then only in passing....

@Magisch you're right on that one, but most tv shows/movies do that IMO

A J
@Termatinator nope

7:36 AM
@Magisch What's wrong with a category named 'wrong' ? :P

@Tinkeringbell It's basically what guilty pleasures are in english

@JarkoDubbeldam Yeah, that's it ;-)

and the wrong refers to 'liking it is just wrong', not the music itself

I think that the dutch are a weird people (and I'm one myself)

@Tinkeringbell Hmm
Anyone here know the Band 2 steps from hell?
They make some damn good instrumental music

7:58 AM
@Magisch Never heard of em
Sorry, I was busy writing up a Facebook question for @Shog9: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/6817/…
What do you guys think of it?
@Magisch, in regard to your question: Does your school have some sort of trust person/teacher that you can confess to and ask for help?

Q: Does it go against netiquette to give constructive feedback on Facebook?

TinkeringbellStory I'm a participant in several arts and crafts groups on Facebook. Some of them have a 'be nice' rule stated in their group rules. This rule often states that when people post their craft asking 'what do you think', you're only allowed to say 'looks good!' or not react at all. Last week, I...

@Tinkeringbell ugh, stupid people
good question

@JarkoDubbeldam blush
I tried :P

IMO, no, they specifically asked for feedback. If all feedback is sugercoated to stop from hurting anyone's feelings, the feedback is pointless.
brb, writing an answer

8:05 AM
@JarkoDubbeldam Mind you, there are groups that say 'what do you think' may only be answered if you can say 'looks great' :)
(as stated in the question)

@Tinkeringbell It might be a bit POB though, I release while writing an answer

@JarkoDubbeldam MIght be, but etiquette is allowed so why not netiquette? :P

@Tinkeringbell maybe you can expand it with 'how to respond to the moderator'

@JarkoDubbeldam But I don't want to get into a catfight with the moderator?

A J
What is "Netiquette"?
Never heard of it.

8:09 AM
inter'net etiquette'

@Tinkeringbell right. A fight with @cat would be a bad idea ;P

@Mithrandir hue
huehue

A J
LOL

> Does it go against netiquette to provide constructive feedback in a Facebook group? If not, how do I explain so to the moderator and ask them to put something up in their rules so other people won't make the same mistake, without a risk of getting kicked from the group?
better?
Now I'm basically asking 2 questions! :P It's too broad! :P
@Mithrandir I never fight with her.... ;-)

@Tinkeringbell I find it's easier to leave and join another group, than try to convince all those people to change their ways
it's not really worth it
and it is not like it's the only of such groups on FB

8:13 AM
@JarkoDubbeldam I see ;-) I'm off to the bus, please keep an eye on my question for me? ;-)

@Vylix Making the wrong choice in situations that could get one raped has been selected for by evolution, not against. — Jasen Nov 6 at 9:36
what the fffffffffffff$%^&*^$% is that comment
why did three (THREE) people think it was a useful comment and upvoted it

A J
@Tinkeringbell Like this? ^^

@Hamlet shows how bad comment voting is. since those 200 people couldn't downvote ;)

Also that question and the answers are a complete mess

8:26 AM
I'll take a look once I'm at my desk
@AJ yeah, good job!

@Hamlet I mean you could argue it's technically not wrong but it's ridiculously inappropriate and rude.
Why is that not deleted yet?

@Magisch because we only really started two weeks ago?

This site has been around for more then 3 months, no?

@Magisch I'm not going to go there again... that's partially why shog put up those rules last week
I tried before that... but three months is a pretty steep curve for a first time on SE...
We got things rolling now, let's keep it that way

@Magisch it's very wrong from a technical/scientific standpoint.

8:38 AM
@Hamlet Which is why I said "You could argue"
Then again arguing about evolution is off topic for comments here
Like, almost the definition of off topic

Arguing about almost anything is off-topic for comments. anything but the content directly above the comments.

8:53 AM
@JarkoDubbeldam Arguing about the 'correctness' of the content above the comments is wrong too...
Comments are to suggest improvements/ask for clarification.
If you think an answer is 'wrong' --> downvote. If ít's VLQ or NAA also flag

discussing in the comments is really only acceptable on meta
The mechanism on stack for indicating wrong or right (or agree or disagree for subjective matters or on meta) is voting

Example.
What is the first comment suggesting/asking for clarification?

neither of them is particularly useful

And what about the second? I think the only slightly good thing about it is 'The answers here focus on women, but can also be used for men'...
But I flagged an entire thread there yesterday, most of them got removed almost immediately, these two flags are still pending

What about this is primarily opinion based?
I just came across this in a close vote review task

9:05 AM
Am I in the right or in the wrong?

@Magisch I'll take a look. Did you flag the comments yet?
@JarkoDubbeldam Yep, it's opinion based...Why didn't we pick that up earlier?
If it was about asserting the boundary, that would have been IPS

I flagged the answer-in-comment
What do you flag that as? Custom flag with text? Because I used "no longer needed"

(partial) answer in comments

@Magisch I use no longer needed as well

I just cast the final close vote on that partner going through phone question
One caveat though: We'll never be able to delete it
It has +104 votes and dozens of upvoted answers

9:07 AM
"No longer needed" was fine for all three of them. The second one could easily have been flagged with "rude/abusive". None of them should have required a custom flag. — Catija ♦ yesterday
@Magisch Maybe we can put one of those 'locked for historical reasons' on it?
(Why can't we delete upvoted things?)

@Tinkeringbell Because stack won't let you

I custom flag... pretty much everything except for 'why the downvote' and '+1' comments

> Are there exceptions?

Occasionally some exceptions are made. Often, these exceptions come in to play when:

all answers are more than 60 days old, and have 3 or higher score (the standard prevention against deleting answered questions is there so answerers don't lose rep, but if all answers have been visible for at least 60 days and have a score of +3 or higher, this is a moot point since their rep will be kept)

I just cast the final delete vote on this too: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/6745/…

NOt even then?

A J
9:09 AM
@Magisch Looks like you are using your new privileges.

Q: Please don't write answers in comments

Arwen UndómielI've been noticing a trend lately of people writing answers in the comment section. What does this mean? When you write an attempt to solve the OPs question - whether it's a fully fleshed out idea or not - and dump it in the comment box. This is not good. Answers is comments are detrimental to ...

@AJ You're supposed to do that :p

Suggesting that custom flag is the way to go :)

A J
@Magisch Well, there are more posts waiting for a final vote.

9:11 AM
Yes

It shouldn't be necessary to use custom flags. No longer needed should be fine. If it isn't that's a mod problem ;-)

I just deleted 4 more and now I'm out of delete votes for today

A J
@Magisch No problem

is there a review queue for comments or do they all only go to mods?

A J
@JarkoDubbeldam They go to mods

9:12 AM
@JarkoDubbeldam Mods only

Unfortunately.

Nobody else can delete comments or view deleted comments either

But they see the flags in different queues, or on one pile?

@JarkoDubbeldam meh

So they'll sit until afternoon insert cato the elder meme

9:13 AM
That's just 'cause I like custom comment flags

@Mithrandir but it's on the meta, so it must be truth

@JarkoDubbeldam all in one pile. It's filterable, though.

Pfft...
^^ What I mean is: IPS has also "be nice" in the rules. But there is a difference between constructive criticism and being impolite. The mod/admin doesn't seem to know the difference. — Fildor 13 mins ago
They have 6 answers on all off IPS, but I've seen them write answers in comments soo many times....Is that a problem I should tell a mod about?

@Magisch well. Some comments automatically nuke when flagged, and any comment that gets enough flags will be automatically deleted

@Mithrandir Well yeah
but that's not really users deleting is it. That's the flag nuke akin to what happens to spam

9:15 AM
@Tinkeringbell hey now, for a long time I only had a few answers as well

@Tinkeringbell You could/should mention it in one of your comment flags
Maybe they can shake some sense into the guy send a polite mod message encouraging them to answer instead.

@Tinkeringbell what would be interesting if those answers were actually suggestions for improvement of the question

@JarkoDubbeldam Yeah, but when I look at your activity tab you don't have 178 comments... of which most of them seem to not be requests for clarification/suggesting an improvement but just sharing chattering

Personal shame:
Nobody needs a cleaning lady. Unless you're working 100 hour weeks or something, in which case you should have the money to hire one even on close to minimum wage, especially if you have double incomes. Nobody needs vacation either. Even the wealthy people I know don't usually afford a cleaning lady, because it's a lot of money for something you ought to be doing yourself. — Magisch Sep 4 at 8:17

oh yay, my edit was approved :D

9:17 AM
That is me, on Sep 04, giving a (bad) answer in a comment

:grabs pitchfork:

Oops, I have 235 comments here...

@Tinkeringbell <insert let's not shame users in public here>
@Magisch aaakkkk

@Mithrandir True, just wanted to get across that for me it's a pretty serious issue here... I think if you go through my comments there are bad ones as well, plenty of em

The number of comments on that question cries

9:20 AM
1 flag off deputy badge, and still got 7 pending :(

Someone please edit the responses into the question and then flag the comments with a 'now edited into the question' flag. It would make me happy :P

does it have to be pretty, or can it be a bullet list?

I'm on mobile, or I'd do it myself.

@Mithrandir @JarkoDubbeldam just take a shot at it!

A J
Is somebody doing it or I should proceed?

9:21 AM
@JarkoDubbeldam I don't care, really - do it how you want :P

@AJ proceed if you had already started. @JarkoDubbeldam AJ was already on it! :P

Anyway disappears to do productive stuff

@Mithrandir I want to know that spell...

@AJ go ahead, I haven't started yet

A J
ok

9:25 AM
Yep, I made a bad comment too:
@luchonacho If this is something you worry about, just bring the monetary reward, and when the moment comes, just state that you would like to give something back, to e.g. reimburse for travel costs and reward his/her kindness. If the stranger is not expecting it, and does not want it, he/she can decline. — Tinkeringbell Sep 6 at 10:23

I raised 6 comment flags on that post

@Magisch Good.
I'll walk through my comments as well, to see where I can remove things. Particularly from my early days on the site ;)

A J
@Magisch I raised 7.

I raised 29 today

it's kinda weird when a german sheperd is your lap dog (mine is, constantly wants to lie down beside you, gets on the couch, lays his head on your legs)

A J
9:29 AM
So, there are two people who already flagged the comments. We need one more vote to remove them without a mod.

A J
yes

I ran out of flags

A J
ok

@JarkoDubbeldam Oh... Catija said raise custom flags to avoid running out ;)

A J
9:33 AM
I guess @Tinkeringbell and @Mithrandir can proceed

@Tinkeringbell pfft, all this time people saying "huhuhuhuh don't raise custom flags for answers in comments"
=.=
;)

@JarkoDubbeldam Well, I didn't realise you have so little flags :P
But this is good as well, if they all get approved you will have a lot more tomorrow

@JarkoDubbeldam welcome to smokey ;)

gleep
I just flagged 19 comments on that question.
I probably should have just used one custom flag.

9:43 AM
@Mithrandir how are you ever gonna get marshal doing that?

I don't even have that many comment flags

@JarkoDubbeldam quite easily
also I've got 10k helpful flags - I just want to reach 20k, I don't care about the badges anymore ;P
(on the network)
I've got 166 helpful here, 5 declined, 1 retracted, 19 pending
also cool, apparently I've got 7 Marshal badges and 24 Deputy badges

I like flags. But I also like to keep my "helpful to total" rate above 99,5%

@RoryAlsop How is the election going?

And a lovely sunny morning it is here in Scotland. Still not very cold - above freezing still - but starting to feel like winter

Those 8 declined comment flags don't count though, they all were removed after custom flagging

Election went well, @AJ - I came third, but the two ahead of me are good, so I'm not upset

The disputed post flags are sometimes also removed after the flag is set to disputed

9:47 AM

NickC is our new mod on Mechanics, and deserves it

@Mithrandir Where'd you get that?

Thats my flag summary

A J
ok

@Tinkeringbell userscript

9:48 AM
@Tinkeringbell Thats a user script - global flag summary

Q: Stack Exchange Global Flag Summary

If you are logged into the Stack Exchange network and you have this script installed, you can visit the new flags tab in your Stack Exchange profile: How does it work? The script scans your netw...

Ah stackapps. you linked me to that before. I still have to figure that out

It's really easy
you need to install the tampermonkey / greasemonkey addon on chrome / firefox
and then just download and install the userscript from the link, it'll prompt you

Easy on desktop or laptop - pain in the **** on iPad i found

The colorful flag table is also a userscript

9:51 AM
Is that workplace allowed? :P

@Tinkeringbell ask your workplace

@Tinkeringbell yeah, that one

A J
3678 flags
96.92% helpful flags

@JarkoDubbeldam hmm that shouldn't mind anyways... If I add it at home it will also work here because I'm using the same chrome

@Tinkeringbell no it won't, I think
you have to install it on the computer I think
not sure though

9:53 AM
@Mithrandir Hmm...
The script? Or the chrome extension?

both. but don't take my word for it

Q: How to disable Chrome extensions without disabling them across multiple synced devices

growseI use Chrome across 4 different workstations and I have my extensions synced across all of them. The problem I have is that one of the extensions (Gestures for Chrome) works great if you've got an actual mouse, but on a trackpad on Ubuntu, it just gets in the way. If I disable it on the Ubuntu ...

I'm already out of flags :(

I'mma toss that a generic custom flag :P

9:55 AM
Flagged it already
:-)

aka
> The comments on this question need to be cleaned up.

I think most of our 'most upvoted' questions can use a good clean-up :)

A J
I am not.

I have... 5 comment flags left, and 25 post flags.

@Tinkeringbell I got a feeling that the answers you got on your question so far all are pretty much duplicates from eachother

9:57 AM
@JarkoDubbeldam Yeah, I don't think it's going to get much more attention ;-)

@Mithrandir let's work through that list in the upcoming days

@JarkoDubbeldam Yup..

@Tinkeringbell depends on the workplace. if you do webdev at all you'd probably get away with saying it's some kind of dev tool

@Magisch probably more related to how close they check what everybody is doing on their workstations

10:02 AM
If you're like me you are one of the sysadmins so if you install something it's permitted almost by definition
But my company is small and informal

huh
I lost 20 rep because a question I answered was removed

@JarkoDubbeldam could have been my fault. I deleted a bunch of questions sitting at 2 DVs this morning

@Magisch Yeah, but I didn't expect the rep from the answer to be lost when the question was deleted

@JarkoDubbeldam that happens

@JarkoDubbeldam Only rep from answers older then 60 days and higher then 3 score is kept

10:08 AM
unless like it's scored +3 and older than a couple months of something
hah, ninja'd :P

hmm was at +2

@Mithrandir I feel factoids about the inner workings of stack exchange have replaced all the spongebob squarepants episodes I used to know second-by-second in my brain
Probably didn't help that I spent more then a month reading meta for fun on MSE and MSO

also @tink I'll just say that the mod probably needs to take a step back and take another look at what exactly they were doing. mods make mistakes - they're sometimes even humans. I wouldn't leave the group just because one mod made a minor mistake. shrug it off, assume that they were just mixed up or something

@Mithrandir of course, but if it persists

@JarkoDubbeldam sure, but I'm not seeing any mention of a pattern - just this one incident

10:12 AM
and it's not necessarily just the mods, it's also the users that can't seem to respond with anything other than 'looks nice'

@Mag you're in Germany right?

@Mithrandir Yeah, why?

your recent question doesn't have location info

@Mithrandir The 'pattern' for me is that it's sometimes explicitly stated in the rules... so I was wondering..

@Tinkeringbell some people just can't take criticism, unfortunately
@Magisch (this is why)

10:15 AM
@Mithrandir So would that be reason enough to make such a rule/etiquette, so that everybody feels welcome?

@Tinkeringbell I presume so. I don't necessarily agree with that, but...

@Mithrandir Smells like an answer contrary to those already written ;)

meh
I wasn't thinking about posting an answer, just pointing stuff out from a mod's POV

@Tinkeringbell I debated mentioning this in my answer, but I left it out for fear of being condescending. It is often referred to as a 'safe space'.

10:18 AM
Basically, I place of happy thoughts, all bad and negative must stay away
naive as it may be
@Mithrandir I don't even wanna know the answers

@Mithrandir I failed.

In the end it is just the way the community defines itself, not just the mods, but everybody. If they want to be able to show their stuff in a place without criticism, where all bad stuff is removed and everybody is happy, power to them. But it is up to you to decide if you want to be a part of that

@Tinkeringbell I got 9/16 last time I took it

@Mithrandir I only hit 2 right

Trying to change them is hard, if not impossible, since you'd have to fight people that don't want to cooperate, that have practically god powers in the group

10:21 AM
well FB has crazy rules apparently ;P

I took it intuitively, not really while reasoning.

11/16
not bad
had a 7 streak at the end

I have a special hatred for the project documentation part of the chamber of commerce exam now
This is like a university paper only longer and you have less time

@Mithrandir 11 seems to contradict 7, so what's being said doesn't seem to be the whole story...

10:37 AM
@Mithrandir24601 7 isn't a swastika
11 is
I think that's the logic
OTOH, I don't think this is the most appropriate subject here

or 42, it's always 42

@JarkoDubbeldam I'd argue that they should take the entire photo into context - it's clearly designed to imitate all of that. Only it's got a cute cat, so is fine according to facebook but anyway

But that's the entire point of that quiz. Context seems to be greatly irrelevant.
