Q: Is self plagiarism acceptable in US academia?

user4951In Indonesia, a university chancellor is punished for self plagiarism. I wonder if it's okay in US? https://www.medcom.id/pendidikan/news-pendidikan/JKRA537k-tiga-wakil-rektor-usu-tolak-sk-rektor-soal-autoplagiat I know that plagiarism is no no. I don't even know if self plagiarism is a thing

@lila Oh, that's a very cool drawing!

Oof :(
Numbers here are very, very slowly going down but it's suspected the British mutation will have those going up again, so they're now contemplating a ban on going outside of your house at all between 8PM and 4AM.

Ael
@CaldeiraG :/

Don't know the correct English words for it, but over here they'd call it a 'Evening clock'

8:43 AM
stupid measures + people still not following the rules puts the country into this state
@Tinkeringbell 23h - 06h here i think
it's not really much help either
you're probably working to be travelling at that time

Well all I can do is my part, and I've been staying inside for months now so XD

@Tinkeringbell well exactly
my new boss got covid

@CaldeiraG People with jobs that absolutely require travelling here can have special letters with them that would allow them outside, my mom has such a letter for example.
@CaldeiraG Ugh. Have you been anywhere near them?

@Tinkeringbell i have one too
@Tinkeringbell lol, had the 'welcome' meeting with her on friday
about my position and WIP projects
suffice to say i never take off the mask at work

Ael
@CaldeiraG 6pm to 6am here.

8:47 AM
6pm is peak time over here XD

Ael
People are not happy about this once since they can't go grocery shopping after work anymore

:/

@Ael Ugh. Yeah that's the downside of a really strict one like that. I think that's why they're thinking of 8PM/9PM here....

Ael
@Tinkeringbell It's called "curfew" in English and in French we say "fire cover" (couvre-feu)

9PM seems like a good timing

Ael
8:50 AM
@Tinkeringbell We had the 8pm-6am before that but it wasn't enough anymore and they didn't want a real lockdown so soon after the last one
Though, honestly, this looks a lot like the "real" lockdown anyway. The only difference is that you can travel inside France which you can't do when we are "truly" in lockdown.
I mean, everything related to leisure is closed so that doesn't leave many things to do outside on your spare time

I mean, over here we're calling the current situation 'lockdown' regardless of the measures :P It was lockdown when big events were still cancelled and people had to work from home, but could go out to restaurants as long as there was social distancing... and it's lockdown now that everything leisure related is closed but schools are still open, and it's lockdown when schools close too...
it's lockdown even though there's no curfew yet.... and it will be lockdown when there's curfew too :P
We can still go out to e.g. walk, run, or ride bikes. But even that is becoming 'dangerous' as many people crowd what little nature there is here.
I've read about measures like 'You're not allowed to travel more than 15km from your home'... but I think those won't really work in a country as densely populated and small like The Netherlands XD

Ael
@Tinkeringbell Yeah, this probably works better with bigger countries. In France, during the more severe lockdown, we are not even allowed to be more than 1km from home. But I hope that with this curfew thing, we won't have that anymore. I do enjoy having the right to travel, even if I really don't use it most of the time.

@Ael Yeah, just being able to go wherever you want, whenever you want is really nice. :) With regards to that, I personally don't need a travel ban to be cooped up at home though. Currently there are no "public toilets" anywhere, as all restaurants and cafes are closed.... so while you can go drive around, there's no place to end up at.
We've mentioned just driving out to sea a few times but decided against it because of that.

Ael
9:08 AM
@Tinkeringbell I never went to the sea in the winter, but I bet it's less enjoyable than in the summer. Which makes it understandable has to why you are not very "hot" on this idea. Here, it's the mountain that we enjoy going to when the travel restriction isn't here. And the good thing with the mountain is that you can both enjoy it in the winter (yeah to the snow) and in the summer.

Going to the seaside over here during winter can actually be quite nice. It's often a [tiny bit less cold](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oceanic_climate#:~:text=An%20oceanic%20climate%2C%20also%20known,relatively%20narrow%20annual%20temperature%20range) even across a country as tiny as The Netherlands (I live in the 'eastern' part). But the best thing is going on a windy autumn/winter day, and just watch the waves and have the wind blow around your head, then getting hot chocolate :D
But right now there's nowhere to get a hot beverage or use a toilet... and after driving to the seaside, I o
I actually think I like that more than going in high summer when it's hot outside... those days I prefer to do as little as possible and just put a pool in the backyard with a good book XD
There aren't any mountains here so can't speak about those :P

Ael
9:24 AM
@Tinkeringbell That does sound nice indeed :)

Mountains and snow sound really nice too! We almost never get snow here...

Ael
Oh, we actually got snow in Paris this weekend! It was kind of fun to watch since they don't have anything here in case snow happens (like "snow plot" or "salt spreader"). They just look at the snow in despair and basically do nothing about it. I guess it would cost too much to invest in those kinds of things when they only have one day of snow per year or less.

Hahaha :D They predicted around 5cm for the entire country for this weekend, the whole week last week. Then Friday came, and they changed, and on Saturday they changed even more, and eventually we didn't even get enough snow here to turn the pavements white XD
The only places it stayed was on frozen roofs, cars, plants/gardens... and then only less than a cm.
We do have salt spreaders though, and if necessary I've even seen some snow-plows (those are mostly only used for highways though).

Any subtle way I can tell a coworker that "google is your friend" while still answer their question? (Given that I know for a fact that the issue is NOT "I tried to google it but couldn't find anything")

Nope, only blunt ones. Doesn't mean that those are bad... Ask them what they tried to solve their problem, help them with a Google search, then ask them to at least Google next time before asking you and disturbing other work ....
That's how my coworkers taught me to not use them as search machines :P

hi

Do note that some people just don't know the words to Google for, so that's where they may need more help than with the actual Googling.

@Ael thanks

I quickly learned to ask 'What's it called if I want to X/am looking for Y' instead, get a few search terms, and do the rest myself.
@lila morning!

9:57 AM
@CaldeiraG thanks

Ael
@Tinkeringbell Their question is basically "how much does tool X cost" to which the answer is "I don't know, I don't use tool X"

Well if it's not your job to teach this coworker to Google, that's a good answer too :P

Ael
Haha, no, that's a bit too harsh for my taste I think. Though I wish it wasn't ^^ Right now, I'm thinking about using the following solution: 1) I will wait at least 30min before answering. 2) I will give them the link that they need to answer their question. 3) I will add a friendly sentence to not be seen as too harsh
Maybe saying something like: I believe you will find your answer on this page. The price will depend on the options you take.

Did they only ask you?

Ael
Yep since I was the one who told them about said tool

10:03 AM
Ah, well, that probably works best then. :) It's not that unusual for people to ask 'what does that cost' if you bring something that costs money up :D

Q: When is it valid to be negative and when is it good to try not to be?

PoaceousSomething I'm trying to improve with myself is to be more positive. I often dwell on negative topics. However, I sometimes think it's necessary to be negative. For example if your house burned down, it would be just strange not to tell close friends and family. I had told my mom that I lost my jo...

Ael
10:25 AM
@Tinkeringbell For enough
Well, I just answer them but was completely unable to hint that they should have use google ^^'

Some people are smart enough to pick up the hint as soon as you start sending links ;) Fingers crossed they understand that getting a link means they should start looking themselves instead of expecting you to come up with more links;)

Ael
Though, apparently, this question about the cost wasn't really what they were asking about. They just tough the tool was good and wanted to buy it for the company but didn't know the process to do that.
@Tinkeringbell Well, I did include the link but I also told them "It will cost X but if you do Y instead, it will only Z", so that's is far from a "link only" answer ^^

Eh, that should still work ;)

@Tinkeringbell it costs one kidney XD
every iphone release lol

An arm and a leg is an option too perhaps :P

10:38 AM
XD

Though over here, something really expensive is still just 'peperduur', related to how pepper was really expensive when it was first introduced in The Netherlands... it was 'expensive' enough it could be used as a method of payment, sometimes even for salaries.

@Tinkeringbell oh, interesting

Q: How to politely reject coursemate who is asking for final exam answers?

TuqayI am going to have a final exam in a few hours and one of my coursemates wrote me that he has a problem with his computer (he won't be able to fix that problem till the exam) and if I can give him my answers so that he can edit them and pass the course. I don't want to give my answers, but I don'...

By giving him answers in the past you've enabled and encouraged the dependance. Whether his story is true or not, you're not helping him in any meaningful way. I think you should cut him off ASAP from answers for ethical reasons, and that he'll surely recognize the fact and be sore no matter how polite you are... One option (which would be rude; don't do this) would be to tell him you're having mysterious computer problems too and he'd better ask someone with more luck ;) — Euchris 2 mins ago

Q: How to know if a woman want friendship, casual sex or something more serious?

Lucas Silva EliseuRecently I've come across some situations while dating woman, I'm currently looking for something serious after being single for 2 years after a 5 and a half year "married-style" relationship. First situation: I met this woman via internet and we hung out together, had a good time and kissed, but...

TED talk is over
thank you XD

I'm not sure the question is a good fit for IPS, but I also don't really know which close reason to pick yet...

the answer is pretty much 'you can't'
making it not a good fit for IPS

Q: How to tell a friend the haircut she's about to get (and has had in the past) really, REALLY doesn't suit her?

I've tried reminding her how much she always hates the result, but haven't actually said "that looks bad on you" because I've tried to be supportive in the past. How can I te...
