Q: How to respond to discussions about joint activities that never result in an invitation?

jeffry7I don't know how to respond to something that is going on. I don't even know if I should respond. My girlfriend's daughter's husband, let's call him Bill, and I often get paired at family gatherings. Very consistently, he will talk about how I should come over and play some board game. The last ...

A J
@avazula Yello!

hi there :)
@IPSCommentBot mmh ... tp

7:03 AM
Morning! :)

You're late.

I always arrive precisely when I mean to.

JAD
aloha

@Tinkeringbell But Avazula's greeting was already more than an hour ago.
And you're in the same time zone.

It's barely past 9. It's still very much morning ;)

JAD
7:09 AM
@Alex it was a greeting right? Not a summons :p

@Tinkeringbell True. I didn't say you missed it entirely.
@JAD Isn't every message in Chat a summons?

JAD
I'd hope not, else I never get any sleep

@Alex Sure, but I can snooze them for 10 hours a day to ensure enough sleep ;)

10 hours? That's above average, isn't it?

It also accounts for the time it takes to get ready for bed and ready for the day in the morning ;)

7:14 AM
Ah, here I was supposing a two hour nap at work.

Sadly, no :(

7:56 AM
@Alex also, I was at work at 7AM, which is absolutely not that common in Europe :p

8:49 AM
@Rainbacon It was 'meh'. The dancing and acting was really great, but there was something with the singing/sound that made the lyrics unintelligible on the higher/harder notes :/
I'm now listening to a broadway playlist on spotify, and it really is better.

JAD
hmm that's too bad

2 hours later…
11:21 AM
@JAD but you're snoring all the time

@Magisch Now that you're here... regarding your latest comment on meta here, do you really worry that that might happen? Catija already said that if this was going to take months, we're going to reconsider going in without that delay...

Eh, the realities of software development often throw a wrench into proceedings
I can get rid of my comment if you think it's too negative

Might be me, but from what I've seen Catija's been doing a lot of work on our behalf to get a reintroduction to HNQ possible, and your comment doesn't really seem to appreciate it :/
If you're worried about the timeline, that's a good worry perhaps to voice, but right now you're sounding like you've already given up. Perhaps rephrase instead of delete (and say nothing at all?)

ill just get rid of it
I'm worried about the timeline, but for reasons that expressing on meta won't change and has no capacity to change
And Catija would not be at fault if these reasons turned out to prevent our re-introduction until next year

I seriously don't think we're going to wait until next year, that we'll be reintroduced before that if the delay feature is going to take very long.
At least that's a solid impression I'm getting :)

11:37 AM
I'll take your word as the person closer to the process
She raises a very good point though, a minimum age coupled with a feed in chat would give us a real chance to prevent HNQbaiting and its negative side effects
Nevermind mod coverage, that would provide a real incentive to organize systematic community moderation

@Magisch Honestly, the delay feature came as a bit of a surprise to me too, but it's great enough that I'm willing to actually wait for it, especially if Catija is wanting to have it done ASAP

Yeah it gives an opportunity to edit and curate before HNQ is hit, enabling us to present the best and fixed possible version of the question to the HNQ. This is a bit of a game changer imo
and would probably endear new users more to the site
good there's a CM pushing for it that means there's a real chance it gets done

Yep. :) I'm actually more happy to go back to HNQ with, than I would be without

12:44 PM
@Tinkeringbell I always suspected that you were secretly @Mithrandir
Also, sorry to hear that your show wasn't great

@Rainbacon She's just very good at... parroting.

@Mithrandir :D
If only you knew ;)
@Rainbacon It's okay. Mom and I still had a fun night out... and we can now take this off the bucket list ;)

12:59 PM
@Tinkeringbell your last name is something to do with parrots or birds, isn't it?
Thats why you were afraid of puns

@Magisch Ehh, no ;)
That's not why I'm afraid of puns :D

JAD
@Magisch It's more the kind of surname that's really nice to make puns with

1:24 PM
everyone knows but me

@Magisch Don't feel bad, I don't know either

me neither :p
but I know her first name! :o feels privileged

JAD
oh man
you're all missing out

(even though I'm surely not the only one haha)

1:39 PM
@avazula such privilege, wow, much ava!

@Rainbacon now you're making me wanna find a Doge meme

Just for you Ava!
Full disclosure, I didn't read the text. I just looked at the doge

@Rainbacon this enlightened my day. Thank you Rain

Glad I could be of service

(just to help the ones feeling left out... you can find it in chat ;) )

JAD
1:44 PM
luckily the chat's search function is very straightforward and easy to use when you don't know what word you're looking for

@JAD I find it so not intuitive ._.

JAD
@avazula sorry, that was sarcasm

@JAD oops. Haha

Hmm, I think I found tink's first name
@JAD You are right. So straightforward

2:01 PM
@Tinkeringbell found your first name in chat, :p
surprisingly mentioned in a conversation with me, yet I didn't remember

JAD
:P

@Magisch XD Wasn't the last name in that same conversation?

ooh
I see now why you don't want to share

Good.
Then keep it that way XD

I was gonna say you have no power here like back then but that changed didn't it

2:05 PM
A lot XD

JAD
the power creep is real

I still have no power here, so it's more like the parrot power creep is real
please nerf

Ok, I...wasted far too much time on that. oops

@JAD creep? Two diamonds within a year is more like a power dump :P

Well diamond -> no diamond is a step and diamond -> mse diamond is another step
so it's a ladder-esque creep indeed
on an unrelated note. Do you have family in poland @Tinkeringbell?
I know someone with the same surname in poland

2:13 PM
@Magisch Not that I know of, no :)

Hi @Rainbacon!

3:02 PM
Don't bother, account is deleted.

@Tinkeringbell That's what I get for looking at it

@Rainbacon This one wasn't your fault ;)

A J
Hmm

3:43 PM
@Rainbacon Nice! But I would have been more impressed by 4200 :p (the answer to life, the universe and everything)

@Ælis Well, you could always go upvote 10 of my answers. 😉 just be careful of the serial voting script

@Rainbacon Ahah, nice move! XD

4:08 PM
Did I hear serial votint script?
ears perk up

@Magisch Yeah, we were going to see if @Ælis could get me to 4200 rep before they get banned :)

Q: How to ask ex-girlfriend to seek professional help

BananaMilkShakeBackground My now ex-girlfriend and I have dated for nearly three years (both nearly in our 30s). Up until some months ago, our relationship was the perfect one everybody is looking for. In short, we would never argue or be upset with each other, we had similar tastes for almost everything and t...

6:45 PM
@ExtrovertedMainMan huh, I feel like we had a question about this before but I can't find anything

Curious, what is the best practice when one comes across a rude answer? DV and vote to delete, flag as R/A, or both?

@Rainbacon flag as R/A - the system will place a downvote for you automatically, and enough of them will auto-delete

How many does it take? 6 right?

yep

idk if it also places a delete vote but you can always throw one on manually, too. but the flag is important because the system uses that as a factor for its anti-spam stuff

6:49 PM
Better not to delete vote. If the answer isn't deleted via a red flag, the spam penalties won't kick in.

here's the official meta post :)
@Mithrandir dang, good to know! I didn't realize that

Yeah, it's... really not that intuitive.

Hmm, that's interesting. 3 delete votes will remove it, so I would think that DVing would be preferable as it gets the offending post off of the site faster.

@Rainbacon main meta ? ;)

6:54 PM
Well, it's usually faster to go get six >15 rep users to flag than three >20,000 rep users to delete vote... but even then, faster isn't always better, especially if it seems like they might post again.

Q: Should we vote to delete spam posts?

AdamantIf a post accumulates six spam flags, it will be automatically deleted, and its content hidden even from users with the “see deleted posts” privilege (10k+ on regular sites, 2k+ on beta sites). In addition, this will provide helpful data for the network’s spam-detection filters. On the other ha...

^ aha

@EmC This seems like the answer I was searching for
I'm actually kind of surprised that smokey didn't catch that last one

I think really spam/r/a posts don't hang around for too long here as it is, but if people are really too slow you can always try asking people in chat to flag or pinging a mod if they're around

Yeah, and I like the last resort of popping into the charcoal HQ and asking for some flags

7:38 PM
Noooo someone upvoted me
There goes my 11111 :(

@IPSCommentBot fp
(and thanks for saying that ;))

No problem! I'm trying to write a similar comment on that user's other recent answer.

oh great :) I felt like I was the only one leaving comments like that yesterday, it's nice to have.. backup :P

@EmC I was actually in the middle of writing a comment on the first one when yours popped up
I've decided that asking answers for citations is the most difficult moderation task on IPS.
(at least that's how it seems to me)

heh, yeah it's up there. especially when people write answers that seem reasonably well thought out but don't actually give any references :/
or when it's someone that you've seen enough posts by to know they're probably speaking from experience, but they don't actually say that

@EmC Not sure I've encountered that one

8:20 PM
@Rainbacon I recall seeing some from users who were high-rep on other stacks where they didn't have the same requirements, like TWP
feels kind of awkward to be like "hey, I know from seeing a bunch of your posts on another site that you have years and years of experience, but your answer doesn't actually say any of that, can you edit that in"
you have to consider, if they delete their profile at some point, or even get suspended so they now look like a 1-rep user.. how is anyone else to know user1234 is speaking from a place of some authority

To me the hard part is making the comments not sound like they are a template where I'm just filling in a few details

yeah, writing good comments can be hard :/

Well that's a new one. "Do you have experience to back this up?" "No, I tried something similar once and it failed"

.. and that's why we ask people for backup :P
hmm. I'm thinking of asking a money.se question, but there's a pretty similar question already.. but the answer doesn't address one of the points that I (and that question's OP) wanted to know about, and I'm in a different state... so I don't know if I should just post mine or put a bounty on the existing one

8:38 PM
How similar are the questions?

well, that's what I'm trying to figure out :P I guess the OP question is almost exactly the same, but in a different state. but there's only one answer and it doesn't say anything about tax implications, which is what I want to know about..

want to link the existing question?

I think the right way to go is to put a bounty on the existing question. The main difference between your situation and that OP's is the state that you live in. I'm not an expert on tax laws, but I don't believe that being in different states will make a large difference in the answers to the question. Given that, a new question asking for basically the same things would likely be closed as a duplicate. Better to offer a bounty and specifically mention what kind of an answer you are looking for.

I guess the other thing I want to be sure about is, does it make a difference tax-wise if I just add him to my current account vs. make a totally new account
but.. maybe not..
finance stuff is confusing :(
