Q: Why is my crush avoiding me after I gave her a small gift?

KristollI've met a girl in my department at university, and although I wasn't initially interested in her, she would often laugh at my dumbest jokes and flash me unwarranted smiles, so I thought perhaps she might be interested in me. We traveled to a conference together and thus had quite a lot of time t...

@ElizB me too I'm excited! I'm looking forward to getting a bigger audience on the site and seeing more and more people contributing :D

1:34 AM
@Anilla only a slightly bigger audience, but still.
we've definitely improved since we've been kicked off

@ElizB ohh, you think it'll only be slightly?

@Anilla it will definitely bring in more people, yes.
but how much I still have yet to see

@Tinkeringbell seems like you're stuck between a rock and a hard place in your recent question

Q: Letting people know they don't owe me directly

lucasgcbI've recently been able to afford things rather easily and I also live with flatmates (who are also coworkers). We all make the same amount and share a lot of stuff. Whenever I feel like it, I just buy them things like a coffee when I'm having one at work or I pay for the week's groceries. They ...

@Magisch Yeah, it also feels like that :/

10:46 AM
@Tinkeringbell didn't want to make this into a full blown answer, but in my limited experience of people trying to bond over ideological causes (in my case it was a cousin who thought because we both have ASD that we both get discriminated against everywhere) there's no right way out. You either end up alienating the person or other people by virtue of agreeing

Yeah, I've experienced that a few times before, maybe someone has handled this in a way that didn't result in that.... I can only hope. Or perhaps I'll dust off my CV and start applying for another job/company, as right now there's more stuff that I really don't like here.

mind, in today's culture you might not get away from that mindset in a new company

@Magisch True... but there's other frustrating stuff happening right now that's not really related to that mindset... Long story, I'll tell it tomorrow (evening). I'm quite busy with work and tonight I'm going to see Evita with my mom.

@Tinkeringbell Ooh, I hope you enjoy it. I've never seen the show myself, but I love the music

2:13 PM
It's so quiet in here this morning

Ayy I hit 11,111 rep!
Totally unplanned I swear
Now nobody vote on me -.-

@Ælis I think scohe just won

For now, until someone gets 111,111 rep.

Ooh, if someone upvotes one of my questions I'll be at 4096

@El'endiaStarman chaotic neutral

Are you some kind of monster?

@Rainbacon That's definitively a great score! But, for some reason, I'm not a great fan of this number. 12,345 or 77,777 or 99,999 would better please me. So, go to work @scohe001! :p

@Ælis Do you have something against the number 1?

@Ælis lol something tells me 77,777 and 99,999 are a looooong ways off for me
But maybe things will be easier once HNQ is back

2:42 PM
@scohe001 Well, if you stay on the exact same pace you will hit 77,777 on August 19, 2026 and 99,999 on January 29, 2029

@Rainbacon Not really, but 1 is so ordinary!

@Ælis Is it somehow more ordinary than 7 or 9?

@Rainbacon oh boy...idk if that was exactly encouraging

Looking at that math kind of makes Jon Skeet's rep look more impressive

@Rainbacon 7 is the magical number. And 9 is the last one before you need to add "another place for another number"

2:47 PM
It makes the #2 look even better. I don't remember their handle, but I'm pretty sure they're gaining rep faster than master Skeet
Ahh I was thinking of this post, but it looks like that user has slowed down :(

Yeah, I just looked and Skeet is going over the rep cap about 60% of the time
It's impressive that this particular user gained nearly 130k rep in 2017. If you exactly hit the rep cap every day you'd get 73000 rep in a year. So that means that they gained 60k rep from sources that don't count towards the cap (accepted answers and bounties are the only ones I can think of)

That's honestly insane
They averaged almost 200 rep/day in bounties/accepted answers alone

3:07 PM
There are a couple of users like that
Highly accomplished developers with free time to use and a knack for sussing out issues, and the motivation to be consistent, and active in a high velocity language and frameworks

Dang that was some impressive buzzword usage. Are you in the process of interviewing too? :p

@Tinkeringbell 😬 I spent 10 minutes writing a good comment only to find out you'd deleted the post. Apparently there's not a dynamic notice that an answer was deleted.

Why is my codebase so wet *cries in developer

Just saw a PR where someone on my team needed to do a deep clone of an object. Instead of using a helper method, they copied the code of the method (which exists on a react component) and then pasted it onto a new react component.

4:45 PM
@Rainbacon some men just want to watch the world burn...

5:00 PM
@scohe001 In this case, drown not burn.

@Rainbacon I seem to be deleting a lot of stuff you're viewing lately. Perhaps better that you don't look at stuff anymore? :P

@Tinkeringbell I'll just close my eyes and get a screen reader
Or maybe, I won't get a screen reader and I'll just navigate to the top question on the homepage and provide a generic interpersonal answer of "Talk to the other person. Be honest. Here are six times where honesty helped me"
(all of this with my eyes closed of course)

Hahaha the first sounds a bit better :)

5:27 PM
Or, you could ask me if I'm looking at something before deleting it :)

5:39 PM
Does anyone have any thoughts on this question? I think that the current state is off-topic, but that there's an on-topic question hiding in their. The edit history of it makes it feel more like the OP just wants it to be a rant than actually seeking help though.

shudders

Q: How to introduce someone to a recruiter that I've worked with before?

Em CWhen I was looking for a new job around 8 months ago I worked with an agency recruiter - the type that shops your resume around, not an in-house recruiter - to get some interviews. Working with them went fairly well and I wound up with a decent offer, but somewhat unexpectedly also got a "dream j...
