Gamen :)
Okay, I am not interesting enough of an autist it seems like xD

@dhein You're just awake too early ;) morning!

I think that has nothing to do with it xP (Wasn't refering to not getting a response, as both messages were sent within like 30 seconds xD)
Nah, it is reffering to the recent interviews I made. It seems like the TV interview won't be published, since the material they got is "not fitting the channels format"
Given, that the channel is well known for casting most of the Trash-TV in german television, I take it as compliment, that they consider an interview with me in regards of autism, as not fitting their format. But on the other hand I am sad that they don't want to help getting public awareness of how wrong most stereo types for autism are.

@dhein eh, honestly? From what you said you sound like you dodged a bullet.
"iven, that the channel is well known for casting most of the Trash-TV in german television"

@JourneymanGeek Not really, cause that interview was mainly over SAP and our head of PR had contractually (if I understood it correct) anyways an veto right for the report being sent. :)

Probably also means fun edits to make you even more interesting.
Ahhhhhh

6:27 AM
But probably thats also why they didn't make the report.... Nothing really interesting without adding false statements, what the PR office would veto for sure ^^
Then I got yesterday an info that one of the interviewing journals made a few years ago an article where one author wrote a line "How smartphones turn the citizens into autistic zombies"... what several organizations heavily critizized and 2 editions later they excused for that statement having been made.
That same journal now sent us the quotes they want to use. (Since again, we insistet on having the right to review the quotes" And.... not a single quote I actually had made the way its written...
'^.^
So hence I wrote, apparently I am not interesting enough of an autist, that everyone wants to interview me, but almost no one likes to publish what I am saying x'D

heh
I jokingly refer to handphones as the opiate of the masses

6:43 AM
@JourneymanGeek They're a mighty fine thing though... 'I am NOT available right now'

lol
I used headphones for that for years

@dhein :( just keep trying?

and well, we're designing cities around them
Unless there's a disability related use for light up ground level strips that tell you when its safe to cross

@JourneymanGeek Ehmmm... None that I can think of?
Usually we have traffic lights here ;)

yeah, this is in addition to them

6:49 AM
@Tinkeringbell Ofcause, I really like giving interviews. And its in my payed worktime. PLUS we have an PR office, that is doing all they can, to ensure, nothing being said gets expressed in the wrong way :) So for sure I am gonna keep going :)
Also so far there is one article being published next week, which actually is good quality and I am looking forward to hold that journal in hands :) But 1 good article being publsihed so far out of 7 interviews.... I start getting an idea why PR is a quite hard job ^^

Yeah, PR is hard :). Still, one out of seven doesn't sound that bad! And having PR is good too, as people twist words really easily these days!

7:11 AM
yeah totally. PR asked me now clearify the context for which I made these quotes, and also offering them alternative quotes for the "quotes" I haven't said that way (which is literally every quote). Cause as it is right now we won't allow it being published '^.^
or at least not allow to be quoted the way it is.
So maybe its even gonna be a 2/7 ^^

Gamen Dominik Dhein!

Domenik* :P

@dhein oops... didn't know that, sorry :p

7:26 AM
Shame on you :P

French spelling mistook me :p

well, Dominik is the by far more common form :)

so dear, in the end do you have one of your interviews to share with us? :D

Not yet.

wow, that takes a long time :o

7:27 AM
yeah ^^

Normally I should have an interview published tomorrow!! (I still can't believe someone thought it'd be interesting to discuss engineering and beekeeping with me)

They all gonna be in german, tho. But the one I am about to review at least should gonna have a picture of me ;D
beekeeping? Is it what it sounds like? That I would be interestet in aswell.

@dhein That's okay, I can read German :D
@dhein yes it is :) I'm an engineer on weekdays and a beekeeper on weekends haha

I mean.... is that some sort of raising an army?

@dhein what? :p
It's the activity of taking care of swarms and hives, and if the winter is rude, to feed them and prevent the diseases

7:31 AM
What you keep that bees for? Warriors?

@dhein Hahaha... mutiny!!

NEVER! I wouldn't dare to take onto a beekeeper :O

:)
But to answer your question I do this with my family in the ridiculous attempt of preserving insects in general

How honorable :)

@Anilla Yeah, I'm really surprised at how well received this question is. I'm glad I posted it after all :)

sorry

I learned about that a loooong while ago. I think it was mentioned during my training once. Nothing that would be on the test, so no need to remember it :P

@JAD Haha, don't apologize. This was just one of my school class that I appreciated the lest :p
@Tinkeringbell Lucky you. For me, it was on the test :'(

basically, loop as little as possible
thing is, R hides a lot of looping behind functions
so it makes it very easy to make inefficient stuff

12:27 PM
@Tinkeringbell Ha, I forgot about that line ...

See, that's your rep showing here... you're over 10k now, so you get to see it when someone flags something on chat.stackexchange. You won't see those on chat.stackoverflow or chat.meta.stackeschange, as your reputation there isn't over 10k :)

thanks for the explanation :)
It's been a few ... weeks, I'd say? Since I reached that point IMO and this is the first time I see one, so I was surprised :p
I have a love/hate relationship with reputation. We were discussing it yesterday in TWC, with people whose main goal is to gain some. I struggle to understand this desire...

@avazula I'll make sure to peek at that transcript some day ;)
I've been reading some stuff, and I might have theories. But as I'm not done reading yet I'll keep the thoughts for now ;)
What do you dislike about reputation?

@Tinkeringbell why's that? :p

@avazula They're luckily not that frequent :P
@avazula I'm interested in that discussion, to see and read it :)

12:32 PM
haha :)
@Tinkeringbell What I dislike is there's some kind of users who seem (and even assume) to be very interested in gaining some and would rather focus on how to maximize that rep gain instead of providing the best answer they could.

Yeah, I can understand that.

Also, on most sites you have to be TWGITW for your answer to get seen, otherwise if you arrive "after the battle" as we French people say, your answer won't likely be seen/voted on.
And this I hate.

True too... quickest answers are most likely to be seen and get upvotes. Most people don't like going for the long run...

I asked a bunch of questions on TWP, on each of them after 10 minutes I already had 4 answers composed of a couple of lines that wouldn't teach me anything. Then they would expand on their answers.

Is there actually an info who receives that flag? As I haven't been notified about that specific one right now 0o
like has the chat flag to be for a room of a site you have at least XXX rep on?
@avazula GZ btw x)

12:36 PM
@dhein Nope, but you do have to look at where they pop up at exactly the right time, because it's just a blue ball that shows up. There isn't really any other notification and some are gone pretty quickly
(a mod can handle those flags unilaterally and often does so)

I also dislike (but what could we do about this?) the fact that it seems like, on popular questions, frame challenging answers are the most upvoted. E.g. "how can I tell my manager I have ethical issues to work with some tech industries?" → most UVed answer: "you can say something but you'll get fired so suck it up". Meh.
@Tinkeringbell @dhein yeah, mine were gone in seconds.

@avazula I was above 10K for over a year already, and I think I noticed the blue dots early enough for like 3 or 4(?) times :P

@avazula It's a pattern that was really, really hard to break on IPS. And something we should probably also pay really, really careful attention to when we go back on HNQ.
I can see how HNQ might bring back the fast answers here, especially if the question isn't that great but juicy.

I fully agree with this answer, though I have a word of caution. As you say, "There is no worse feeling than getting called for a mistake like that" but unfortunately not everyone is going to handle this feelings nicely in the heat of the moment. I can see how someone could get not only embarrased, but violently angry because of, which is a situation it's not going to be pretty for anyone involved. — Rekesoft 1 min ago

@dhein so that's really not common then :)
@Tinkeringbell I get that ...

12:40 PM
The only advice I have for that is that having something on HNQ will largely be determined by upvotes (and number of answers), so refraining from upvoting/adding another answer might help a little, if enough people do so.

@Tinkeringbell That's exactly what I hate about rep: it often rewards juicy stuff.

@avazula To be fair, not being my above all others-Goal, but its actually still one of the main drives making me like the network. And especially I love that I have on SO a few high quality Posts, that keep generating rep for me over time. I think I made my last post on SO over a year ago, and still gained like ~300 rep over the past year. :D
And even better PCG.se where I just have one answer that gives me +10 rep every few weeks :D
I think given a few more years that post of mine will hit a 200 score :D

@Tinkeringbell we could also protect them before or shortly after hitting HNQ?
@dhein CR.SE does that to me :)

@Tinkeringbell Is there actually anything we could do against it at all?

@avazula protecting questions is indeed something we can do once they hit HNQ and get too many answers that need moderating. But we can't really do that before.

12:43 PM
@Tinkeringbell well, given our current traffic, that's certainly true

@dhein Think twice before answering something, think thrice before upvoting something. Both upvotes and answer counts still factor quite a lot in the HNQ hotness calculation. So think before adding another answer, and perhaps be careful with votes.

@Tinkeringbell But wouldn't the algorythm not still favor the sites current amount of presense in the HNQ, and hecne with a cap of 1, its almost granted that we will have 1 question allways in it. and by doing it that way, we just even make it more random what it will be? Not that I want to argue against that point. just that we should keep that in midn aswell

@dhein If we're going to have 1 question in HNQ, that doesn't mean there necessarily will be a question in HNQ always. If e.g. no one answered or voted on q/a here, nothing will reach HNQ. There are plenty of low traffic sites where nothing ever reaches HNQ ;)

@Tinkeringbell Yeh, I know and always do so. Even not being on HNQ my voting habbit is: UPvoting only if this is really somethign good. Downvoting only if it is something really bad. and for everything being little over or bellow avverage, gets no reaction from me.

IF everyone unanimously and massively voted on that 1 good question and that 1 great answer it has, that question is pretty much guaranteed to be in HNQ for the next three days ;)

12:49 PM
@Tinkeringbell Hmm but a few votes with a single answer could already be enough. I had posts seen getting into HNQ with question having 2 upvotes and an single answer having 1 upvote, if it was that sites only HNQ entry.
Given these 1 answer + 3 votes accumulated within the first 1~2 hours. but thats something even if we all were very conservative, just a few random user could already achieve.

@dhein Yes, that true. At least we can 'not make it worse' ;)

I had an quite controversial idea xD we could prepare countermeassure posts, just waiting to be posted to counter an bad quality post that hit HNQ '^.^
You know, like posts that we all agreed on having good quality, but aren't urgen for any one of us to ask about. And as soon a bad quality post hits the HNQ one of us releases a good quality post of theirs :P

The problem with great questions is more that they don't have 'obvious' answers, that answering them requires some time and thought.

So we'd have to prepare both the question and the answers and then all start a voting ring (and then I have to suspend all of you :P)

1:05 PM
@Tinkeringbell Why? I mean more like, a sandbox meta. but rather than people leaving comments stating if they find that post the way it is rdy for main or not, leaving +1/-1 comments, so its estimatable where that post would land if it gets released. That wouldn't really be a voting ring, would it?

@dhein Hahaha no, but the 'voting' for a specific post just to get another one out of HNQ might be seen as such ;)
It at least sounds a bit fraudulent

I mean still I understand that this wouldn't really be a good idea as new users might react kinda alergic to this behavior... And I would aswll if I were new here... But still....
@Tinkeringbell Well, you can't suspend someone for soemthing that wasn't discussed at that point, or does that happen? I mean I udnerstand that this might raise a discussion, but if there is no consens about this yet, people won't get suspended back in time after its decided this would be fraudulent, would they? :O

@dhein Well, the original impression I got was something of a coordinated effort to prepare these posts, and also vote on them to get them into HNQ in the first place.
Otherwise, preparing them makes no sense ;)

But it would be a technically working solution, while socially questionable :D
@Tinkeringbell Well nah, by preparing I meant like "storing" them on a meta. To see which would generate what feedback by community, and marking such that wouldn't fit the purpose as can be posted already now. And such that are good quality, AND seem to be easy answerable, generate high feedback, keeping them there untill needed.
And not using them cause we agree on voting them into heaven, but by having already revealed who would upvote it and hence simply havign awareness on it, not having agreements on it.
Like Anillas "Why not explaining the cause when excusing?" question I think might be such a candidate.

Q: Getting Jittery at the lack of text responses

user23953I (male, 21, single) have this friend (female, 22, in relationship) who I have known for 6 months from our internship which ended in December. I have since become closer with her the last two months; we go for coffee once every 2 weeks and have hung out a couple of other times too. I really enjoy...

@Ælis oh, they can call as often as they want, I have zero bar in my office :p
It bothers me though, because oftentimes when someone calls and I don't answer my phone just freezes (it just did,I had to press some keys for like 25s. Ugh.)

Telling where you go really can be annoying. On the other side - is it just your freeling of freedom or is it really a problem? Did you try to at least tell them you will be home late or not so late, so they know it's normal if you aren't yet home at midnight? This could suppress them calling you. Even adult people who live together inform the others if something unforeseen has happened and they stay away longer than expected. @scohe001 I thought the question could be off-topic. And to be fair, I dunno how to convey my intentions better. For instance, the other comment asks me to define how success will look like, but that is subjective and what I think might differ from what X thinks(And right now, X doesn't want to even talk about Success).
And again, isn't it intuitive that if he gets his shit (Pardon the language) together in his life, he will automatically do well in School?

@Sid not necessarily. Plenty of people do well in school while falling apart, for others it takes so much energy to keep themselves together that there's absolutely no energy for doing well in school

@Sid Definitely not. But if your goal is that your friend succeed in all his endeavours, saying that in the question makes it clear that that's what you're looking for.
If that's a nice thing that you want in an abstract way, but your specific goal is that he become motivated and in so doing do well in school, that's a very different goal
If you think that the goal is so obvious it doesn't need mentioning, that's one thing. If you think that the goal is obvious and you can't precisely express what that goal is, that can be a problem for a Q&A site.

Sid
@Upper_Case that is my goal but I think it is too abstract to have one clearly correct answer though

I definitely think that there are good questions in there, but they should be nudged onto center-stage
@Sid That's OK! This isn't a Python script, where there should only be one obviously correct answer to a task. But there does need to be a question, sufficiently clearly defined, that all answers can be addressing the same issue

Sid
So, what do you propose the question be if I just want him motivated and willing to work hard in life again?

4:34 PM
I would reorganize it a bit to describe (possibly with examples) what level of engagement he had before, what level he has now, and either a level of engagement you'd like to see him reach and/or what sorts of things you want him to be able to accomplish once re-engaged
@Sid Sorry, I meant to flag that last comment as a response
But that approach gives a bit more context and guidance to answerers, and weeds out answers that probably aren't sufficient to your goals (something like "give him some crystal meth" would up his cheerfulness and motivation, briefly, but probably not direct his life in a way you would like)

Sid
@Upper_Case okay. That is tough to describe because I haven't physically talked to him much(other than occasional visits)in 2 years (because of being in different cities)
I could give examples but then wouldn't it just be a bit distracting from the actual question?

5:25 PM
@Sid If the examples don't convey any useful information, they're distractions. But it's not as clear to us, who don't know your friend or the situation, what his motivation and cheerfulness were like before or what they're like now, which make it difficult to define the question in a way that can get a useful answer
Reading the draft question, I know the recent meaningful events (the college entrance exams, the field of study), and I know he's less lively than he used to be, but that's it. That's too little for me to think of a good answer for (others may not be as limited as I am here), and that it's possible to give too much information doesn't resolve that
