Q: What do I do when I call someone by the wrong name?

Anton KahwajiIn real life, not in messaging, sometimes I call friends by names of other friends, even multiple times in a row, and sometimes I don't even notice it immediately, but I don't know how to apologize correctly, I don't want anyone to think of it in any other way other than that I'm bad with names, ...

@Tinkeringbell And this is actually the problematic point in my Opinion. Thats how I see it what we are currently doing. And the extrapolating in my opinion leaves too much leeway. There is one case with a response to it, seemingly some times getting intepreted one way and then again being at another point in time being interpreted in a different way. And thats actually something, that shouldn't be.
In my opinion thats discouraging, for any user who has a controversial opinion, possibly even made the effort to check if what he plans to write is ontopic/ok found confirmation makes his post, just for it getting closed/deleted because this time rules are layed in a different way. Thats at least how I am observing it from my point of view.

Maaaaybe, this topic is better discussed on meta

Yeah maybe. But dunno :x

7:48 AM
@dhein Yep. I remember writing such questions (We closed this one, but this one is still open, why?) on meta. It works best with specific examples. I agree that one rule shouldn't be applied differently to different questions, so asking on meta should be good.

Good morning everyone :)

8:16 AM
@avazula Hey you :)
@Tinkeringbell Yeh, quite a good fit, that's true. My problem is I am really bad in bringing things on point, so I am a bit scared of my writing style possibly outfocusing the actual topic :x But I might try composing a meta post on that later today. Busy right now, tho.

8:36 AM
@dhein Hey! How is it going today?

9:03 AM
@avazula: Generally I am quite fine I think. It is just the usual struggle with my selfesteem which I am trying to work on. Its just really hard to get out of a habit of generally valuing everyone else opinion over my own and striving for conformation, if thats what you did all life long. :x Its frustrating, but I think I am making progress on that matter :)
confirmation*
wbu?

9:51 AM
@dhein oh no :( if that helps, I think you're a great person :)
Oh, but you said you didn't want to rely on someone else's opinion, arf ... :/ then don't mind my last sentence :p

11:07 AM
@avazula Thank you:) But yeah, thats the difference between self confidence and selfesteem Id say. I am infact very selfconfident (so sorry if it sounds cocky, but I know I am great)
But despite being confident in what I do and who I am, I allways value my self by the confirmation of others. And if I dont get it I feel lost and insignificant
And thats what I try to tackle, especially since this makes me very vulnearable for being manipulated

11:48 AM
@dhein To be fair, lots of people depend on others to build selfesteem. I think you can indeed tell yourself that you're not bad, but unless other people see it too and acknowledge it, it's hard to 'feel' it. So don't feel too bad about it, though if it really is bad enough to make you easily manipulated, it is perhaps something you should work on ;)

@Tinkeringbell @dhein easily manipulated is a common trait in atypical people AFAIK, as they're often quite "naive" and bluntly honest and factual when they communicate

@avazula I think part of it is 'want to please'. I remember a story to illustrate that, but I have to go to a meeting now :P

@Tinkeringbell I think so too, although there might be other things at stake here. Have fun! :)

Q: Is it rude to refuse a hairdresser because I want someone who's cut my hair before?

LouI went to have my haircut, and the first hairdresser who became available was the one I know the least, and has only cut my hair once or twice before. For context, I've lived in the area all my life and usually gone to the same hairdresser here. I didn't protest when she called me up, and she di...

12:20 PM
@ExtrovertedMainMan or else just do like me, and (almost) never cut your hair :D

JAD
I'd say call ahead to make an appointment with a specific hairdresser, probably the easiest for them

@Tinkeringbell You have generally a point here but qhat ava says totaly is inline with what I observed so far. Nonetheless I think the lack in selfesteem has additional negative impact on this matter.
But yeah, I made an kinda complex agreement with my bailey. Where under the line we agreed on I am allowed to use her in specific ways to raise my selfesteem. And it seems to work. Its just progressing very slowly and I tempt to fall back sometimes in the bad moods
@JAD I sometimes feel like, when being there the first time " ehm.... can I get someone else? Your hairstyl looks so odd that I really prefered someone with a better feeling for styl"
And saying that would for sure be rude xD

my bailey -my xD was gonna write my best friend and then remembered that you know I am calling her bailey πŸ™ˆ
@avazula btw, I asked you β€žwhat about you?β€œ ;P

1:12 PM
@Tinkeringbell And yeah it is to an extend that most people are even annoyed by my need of getting confirmation.

1:29 PM
@dhein Yeah, that's understandable to an extent. I've had to learn that too.. As a kid, I'd show my mom my drawings every other line, just to have her confirmation. Later on, it was asking her 'did I fold this right' for every different piece of laundry (t-shirt, sweater, sock, towel) every time I'd fold the laundry...

@dhein sorry, big day. I'm fine, thanks :)

@avazula No worries, and glad to hear :) Dont get under ;)
Well for me the lack in selfesteem is more social interaction related. But Proby my mom is playing a big role in it, aswell. The thing is my mom tried allways to micromanage me. She very detailed kept telling me what to do, how to behave and made every single descision for me. So when I moved out and became adult she kept doing this.
She aswell tried to convince me that I can't have autism and its just a matter of will... And even then she kept trying to persuade me to be inline with her opinion for any single descision I made and told her about. This became so stressfull that around 3 year
And by the way, I think thats also what my habit of writing long messages comes from.... Trying to clearly describe whats going on within me, so others have most preceise ifnormation for judging me and how I behaved.... Meeeh xD

2:09 PM
@dhein Maybe we should make a sandbox for meta posts

@Rainbacon That was what came into my mind when I was writing that message, too :P But you think actually anyone would look regularly into that? >.<

I would, there's not a whole lot else to do around here in the american afternoons

I think meta posts can be sandboxed in chat ;)
Let's not make sandboxes for everything. Meta is for discussion too, comments are already allowed to be a bit more chatty, we can figure that out without a sandbox ;)

@Rainbacon Then we rather should.... Make IPS Great again! x'D

@Tinkeringbell Or we could make a sandbox for sandboxes πŸ˜‰ That way we could come up with new sandboxes!

2:23 PM
I am gonna propose a Sandbox Exchange on Area51 xD

2:34 PM
Good morning :)

Hi!

How's things? I'm working on my internship stuff

@ElizB: Have fun :) and morning :P
Where are u from btw?:)

@dhein I'm from the northeast US, upstate New York

Ahhh, cool :)

2:42 PM
yup. we're getting a big winter storm this weekend so I'll be here a lot lol

argh :x I think I most likely won't acompany you :x having a DnD day on saturday and on friday I have to obtain last items for my birthday hiking trip the following weekend. ^^

Things are...a bit tedious these days.

Getting new contacts here after my relocation works out by far bettwer than I had dreamed of :)

I'm not on a project at work, so I'm just playing around with some new stuff, the stuff I'm playing with is pretty crappy

@Rainbacon Can't quite agree :P
sigh :x
I think I am out for today. have a good one you all <3

3:02 PM
Have a good one

3:25 PM
this is so good I wanted to share :)
Great working song

hahahaha its..... goooose bumbs :D
I like it.
But I usually listen at work to....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArwcHjmsw3A

'^.^

When I'm at work I usually listen to this playlist
Unless I'm listening to this one

ooooh disney and musicals! you have some similar taste.
I see some from Phantom of the Opera, and some from Les Mis, and I note you like Jackie Evancho. :)

Yes. I've liked her since I saw her on America's Got Talent

3:38 PM
I don't listen to her as much but yeah she's got amazing talent.

Consists entirely of songs I can and have listened to on repeat (by themselves) for an extended amount of time.

I saw her on AGT, and was pretty much amazed but as she grew she kinda faded for me personally
I love Greatest Showman, various musicals, especially Phantom- I'm seeing it in theater for the third time in April with my sister- her first time :D
The one song from Greatest Showman that's been repeating in my head lately is Come Alive

I have quite varied musical tastes. The links I posted are 2 of my 27 playlists (though some of them are empty)

I have a playlist on my phone but not really on youtube. I search for whatever I feel like
really, I have several playlists based on genres

@ElizB My playlists are called: "nothappi", "Bike ride", and "it's a trap!" ...

3:45 PM
I categorize my playlists by emotion, which is why I have some that are empty. I've defined the emotions, but not the music to go with them

@avazula "it's a trap!" hehe

@avazula Has a lot of Akbar in it?

"nothappi" being my extremely accurate translation for French invented word "pakontan"
@El'endiaStarman haha

My playlist names all consist of 3 characters. They make up every possible 3 character combination of 0, +, and -

mine tend to all end in "ish"

3:57 PM
That diagram is an illustration of how my playlists are organized
Each * represents a playlist sitting in a 3-dimensional space. The best way I've ever found to describe my emotions is as a vector pointing from the center of the cube to a * on the surface of the cube (with the zero vector being the exception, that's my calm state). So I created playlists to group music that is associated with that emotion (there's another story about how I experience emtions as music)

4:49 PM
@Rainbacon Do you organize your emotions along three axes?

I do indeed. I don't have labels for the three axes other than x, y, and z though. So, basically, I couldn't tell you what exactly any of the axes means, I just have to kind of go by what feels right

Interesting.

I started doing it about 2 years ago. It's really helped me come to a better understanding of myself. I had hoped that I'd be able to talk about my emotions more with other people, but as it turns out, a lot of people who aren't on the spectrum just sort of know about emotions. And they speak a different language about them.
So, if someone said "How do you feel". Most people would say "sad" or "happy" or "afraid". I would say "Waltz of the Flowers"

5:05 PM
@avazula share, please! Especially the starwars refference makes me curious. Btw is it just me generally just getting in a worse mood when listening to most songs when already in a bad mood?
@Rainbacon holy thats impressive and makes me fucking curious. I am not even aware of more then 2~3 emotional states I am usually in

@dhein I wasn't either until I started this. I actually started with 3 playlists: up, down, and center. But once I started sorting my music I realized that it didn't fit nicely into 3 playlists. The variations were just right to lead me to a 3 dimensional structure
I think the first playlists I was populating were 000, 0++, 00+, and ---

Or, in other words, "normal/calm", "pretty great", "good", and "everything sucks"? :P
I think it's still fairly remarkable how expressive that can be even without association with "typical" words for such emotional states.

@dhein erh... "trap" actually refers to the type of music ... :p
"bike ride" is full of upbeat music (for I need some beat to bike, obviously)
the other two have for description caption: "for a lighter mood at the office", and they're basically full of angry songs.
@dhein I listen to a lot of different kinds of music. If you have have an outlook, you can see a bit of them here

5:40 PM
@El'endiaStarman sort of, but not really. 000 is most definitely my normal/calm. But beyond that I don't have a lot of strong associations with the playlists. What I do have is the situations in which I use them. I most often listen to 00+ when I'm playing video games. 0++ happens most frequently when I'm heads down at work and need to get things done. But I also use them at various other times as well

6:26 PM
@avazula now i suspect i wont like it but still curious. Is that a link to the playlists?
@Rainbacon hmmmm I am probably not enough into music for doing that. Actually I only know songs I can hear when i am happy any other mood as said all music I ever tried just pulls me down further so i never had motivation to investigate imthat further :x

@dhein Don't you have some music/sound for when you are anxious?

@El'endiaStarman yeah I really like that idea and I would love to start doing that, but as said, all music I can enjoy at all would be somewhere between 000 and+++ i think πŸ™ˆ
@Noon no. As said, everything i tried just made that feeling worse
@Noon might be that they exist for me, but when I am in a bad state i at some point stoped experimenting with that as it wasnt worth the effort

@dhein Hum, I must say, I find that strange ^^ I personally listen to breathing and heart bit ASMR and it has a very calming effect on me

@Noon Ooh, I do enjoy ASMR from time to time

Mom checking it on snother device :)

6:34 PM
@dhein Yeah, I get that. I'm not in the mood to experiment things want I'm not good either

Interestingly, my system helped me to realize that a) I have a favorite emotion, and b) it has a name!
--0

@Rainbacon Awwww please tell me its called Dieter
I want giving my emotions names too :p

I call it --0

sry couldnt resist πŸ™ˆ

@Rainbacon What is it related to?

6:38 PM
@Noon It's the kind of feeling that I get standing alone on a train platform late at night. Or when I'm driving alone late at night. So I guess it's related to being alone at night. But maybe not just being alone, because both of those things are travel. So maybe something about going home

@Noon ok thats interesting. In the first place, cause I have no idea how one even would get the idea listening to it. I find it weird right now, as I am happy.... but I see how this could help in other states. very interesting, I definetly will try that

The songs that I experience it as are "Hero of War" by Rise Against and "Downtown Train" by Everything But The Girl

interpersonal.stackexchange.com/q/20647/1599 Just venting here but: Y'all could've done that too.

Huh?

@Tinkeringbell Yeah, sorry I had a very busy day at work and wasn't up to do more than lefting a comment :/

6:42 PM
@dhein That question was asking if something was rude (which is off topic). Tink edited it to be about how to not be rude (is on topic). She's saying that any of us who commented about it being off topic could have made the edit that she did.

@dhein The edit. There's three close votes, while the review queue certainly offers an 'edit' button, and after Noon's and OP's comments there it became quite clear that a rephrasing would've helped. I understand not everyone may have had the time to do so though.
But I've now also had to comment on three answers asking them to rephrase/rewrite their answers, and not discusss whether or not this is rude but how to decline without being rude and it's kinda making me cranky
:P

@Rainbacon Hmmm I just realize confronting my self with my own emotions is hella draining on my energy. Just trying to understand the emotion you described finished me for today :x

@Tinkeringbell I love traveling when it's night and quite, I feel safe (and the first you gave is very nice, I'm listening to it right now ^^)

@dhein Sorry that I drained you

@Tinkeringbell Thats Ok, if I dont feel anymore like participating in moderation, the least I can do is volunteering into being the tas punchbag mascot xP

6:45 PM
I used to be very similar. It wasn't until I found a system that worked for me that I was able to approach understanding and talking about my own emotions without getting drained
@dhein That's what the comment bot is for xD

@Rainbacon Dont need to be. usually I avoid this topic. This time I decided not to, and now I know at least why I usually avoid it. But I find this really interesting, I am just a bit horrified how wuickly this can consume my energy reserves.

@Tinkeringbell you are an remarkable diamond shoulder tap
:)

I just realize I pinged the wrong person with my last message, I'm definitively tired x)

HAH! perfect time to just try out what @Noon shared :)

6:50 PM
@Noon @dhein perhaps you should both take a nap?

btw what does asmr stand for?
yeh, i am about to wish you all a good night anyways

@Noon I'm glad you like it
@dhein autonomous sensory meridian response

so thanks for the interesting conversation :)

Meridian, not motor

@Rainbacon Well it's 7:50pm here so it definitively won't be a nap. But I'm seriously considering going to bed earlier

6:52 PM
Here's the wiki page about it

@Rainbacon mind explaining that? πŸ™ˆ

@dhein Good night! :)

@Rainbacon thanks πŸ˜…

Good Night @Noon

gn8 :) 0/

6:52 PM
@Rainbacon No, not me, dhein is the one going to bed x)

Oh oops

7:06 PM
@Rainbacon You know what happens when I like a song? I listen to it repeatedly, over and over again (for hours and days). This is what I'm doing right now with your song XD

@dhein Hahaha :P I grew over the confirmation thingy, but thanks! You make a good punching bag ;)

@Noon I do that too :)
You're referring to the first song from --0?

@Rainbacon Yep
@Rainbacon Maybe it's an autism thing? Or do some neuro-typical do that too?

I'm not sure

Q: How can I avoid asking leading question when inquiring for someone well being?

NoonSome time ago, I read an article where someone with Alzheimer explained that, when someone asked her "Do you remember?" she felt pressured to say "yes" even when she didn't. So, from this I was wondering how to recognize this kind of questions (I believe they are called "leading question") and h...

Do you think it's good now? Also, any idea for other tags?

7:22 PM
I'm not sure about it. Let's break it down a bit. It definitely has a clear goal (prevent other person from feeling pressured to lie). The bit about recognizing leading questions makes me think it might be better suited for psych.SE (but I'm not an expert on what they deem on topic).

@Rainbacon Let's try 'leading questions' as a behaviour used in interacting, thus an interpersonal skill?

Thinking about it that way, and looking at upper_case's comment. I think it might be ok. I gave it a reopen vote

And with that bit of wisdom... I'm going to shower and bed. Don't make a mess while I'm asleep (or else have Em clean it up before I wake up :P)

Make lots of messes. Point finger at people who aren't here to defend themselves. Got it

@Tinkeringbell Haha, now I'm tempted to make a mess of it when you and EmC are asleep (early in the European morning) :p
@Rainbacon Oh, I like the idea of pointing finger at people who aren't here to defend themselves! We should definitively do that but in a positive way, so that people can wake up and see all the compliment we left when they weren't there!

7:32 PM
In that case, what's your favorite answer you've received on this stack? Mine was this one from @EmC. Of the questions I've asked, it's by far the most well put together answer I've received.

@Rainbacon Very interesting; I wouldn't connect Hero of War with a "traveling home" feeling. I definitely do experience something similar when driving at night on empty roads, especially on long road trips. The song that comes to mind first that's closest is Globus' The Promise, and another that's related but...going the "opposite" direction is Andrew's Song by End of Silence.
@Noon I do that. All the time. Sometimes to the point of annoying others. >_>

@El'endiaStarman It seems odd to think about what that song is about, but that's the feeling it gives me. I'm listening to your songs now :)

Mine was this one from @BagiM but they have never visited chat
@El'endiaStarman Ahah, I annoy my family with that too :P
@Rainbacon Let's pike a regular chat user who isn't there and say a lot of nice things about them!
I think @avazula is a wonderful caring person and I'm really grateful to have her in my life <3
@Tinkeringbell Always amazed me with her "magical meta link" that answer every question you can possibly have!

Hey! I was going to pick @avazula to talk about how pleasant it has been interacting with her in chat. You stole my ping

Well, the more ping a person have, the better!

7:39 PM
We probably shouldn't do it too much (I could imagine that it might be annoying to get a bunch of pings when people don't actually need you for something)

I really like the way @scohe001 always read the sandbox, even though we haven't seen him too much lately

@Noon phew, you scared me with that ping out of nowhere. I thought for sure I'd broken something :p
I've been pretty bad with the Sandbox lately though. I've been reading but I haven't commented on any posts in awhile

@scohe001 Ahah, sorry x) Rainbacon was afraid this might happen ><

sheepish grin
@Noon that answer you linked is a very good answer

@scohe001 Well, we hadn't had a lot of sandbox questions anyway, so...

7:42 PM
@Noon true
@Noon you probably haven't seen me too much since I've been more active on Arqade recently. A new video game in a series I really love just came out last month so I've been answering a bunch of questions on it

@Rainbacon True, too bad it was a new user who never posted anything else

@El'endiaStarman I've been listening to the songs you linked. Neither of them fit into that emotion for me.

@scohe001 As long as you didn't leave because you thought something was terribly wrong about IPS :)

@Rainbacon I'm not terribly surprised given how your example didn't fit it for me either. :) Out of curiosity, what do those songs I linked fit into?

The only thing wrong is that y'all are so far so we can't all meet up like you and Ava did! The TAS meetup will forever be a pipe dream :(

7:48 PM
@dhein Yes sir it is! It's a bunch of the songs I recently listened to and that I enjoy a lot

user15026
@scohe001 I saw that :)

@El'endiaStarman I'm not sure exactly. Certainly somewhere in the positive X direction. Perhaps a +00

user15026
I was like "hey, I know that username!"

@scohe001 At least it's great to have been able to meet in here :)

@Noon Aaw, girl ... β™₯ I'm really glad I got to meet you IRL. You truly are a friend to me.

7:49 PM
@avazula <3

@Rainbacon Pleasure shared, pal :)

I don't actually have any songs in that playlist.

I deeply care about all of you

@Rainbacon Oooh. Does "home" have a negative connotation for you somehow? If so, or anything like that, then I'll bet that's involved in how/where you and I differ regarding those songs.

But here I go with the random pings as well :D please don't mind me if I don't ping you, as I said, I love you all and think you're great people β™₯

7:51 PM
@avazula I really enjoy that you default to "pal". So many people go for "buddy" or "bud" and I've never liked those terms

@Noon true, I'm happy to have you guys. You all always manage to put a smile on my face to help me get through the long work days :)

@El'endiaStarman No, quite the opposite actually.

@scohe001 You all do that for me too :D

@Ash oh yea! I forgot you were a mod over there! You'll have to poke me if I cross any lines I'm not supposed to :P

I'm thankful @Mith went back from their SE break. They're a person I really like, and I think they're gonna turn into an amazing adult.

7:52 PM
@Noon what have we done

@EmC is an inspiring person to me, she pushes me to go do the things I love (we have a bunch of shared interests) even if she doesn't know about it

@Rainbacon Well, it's not just us, it's also @Tinkeringbell fault who suggested pointing finger at people :p
I like talking with @ThZ, conversation with this frog are always really fun

And I truly admire @Catija as a mod, mother, passionate person about so much things and as a person in general
And finally, I wish I wasn't that far away from @ElizB because I really would have loved to get to know her and @El'endiaStarman as well

@avazula *blushes like a tomato* Well, thanks! The feeling is mutual, except that you already are that adult. ^.^

@Mithrandir Theoretically, yes. :p

7:55 PM
touche :P

I must say, I'm impressed by you @Mithrandir you do so much things and give so much to people!
I'm glad that @ElizB introduced me to the deaf culture. I learned so much because of you, thank you!

So do all of you. For instance, @ava and @Noon's drawings - in addition to showing talent, they are also a great way to bring some joy into the room. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to hide under a rock because I don't know how to deal with compliments... :P

I haven't pinged everyone but I have to say, I deeply care about you all, you all are so inspiring people, you motivate me to become a better person every day, you helped me realize who I am and who I want to be as a person, talking with you makes my meltdowns less painful ... I could say a lot of things, but let's put it simple: thank you.

user15026
@scohe001 So far so good :)

@Mithrandir Can I come with you? :p

user15026
7:58 PM
@avazula Aww man that made my heart so happy. I do like how this room has really formed it's own little caring community

@Mithrandir Speaking about drawing, I have one to share with you all!

@Noon :p

It's from avazula and colored by me!

@Ash Ah-ha, that's the main impression I have of this chat room: a caring community. Despite my initial, er, awkwardness (har har), I've come to enjoy being part of this community with all y'all. :)

I'm thinking about starting a mini series of comics on autism ... but that requires me to take the time to do it :p

user15026
8:01 PM
@avazula If you do get around to it, I'd love to see them :)

@avazula 12/10 will read

@avazula Oh, that would be awsome!

user15026
@Noon This is lovely :)

I have to finish build that website first :p

@El'endiaStarman Well, who isn't awkward in here? :P

8:02 PM
@avazula Wait, you're building a website?

@El'endiaStarman yes sir :)
with my hammer and nails with love

@avazula Very cool! I've made some myself so naturally I am quite curious as to what you're using to do it. :)

@Noon After all, it's not called the elegant silence!
@avazula Most websites are made with duct tape and bailing wire

@El'endiaStarman Well, the front-end is Bootstrap stuff with html, css and J and backend is made with Python

@Noon I guessed correctly! :)

most of the events we plan are free, as we want to make culture something available for everyone, not only the wealthiest

@avazula Have you heard of wix.com? LOL. I keep seeing their ads on youtube.

@Jasper Gosh, a looong time ago. Like 10 years or something.

I don't know anything about websites, but wix.com seems pretty good for someone who doesn't know anything.
However, the other ads I keep seeing on youtube are grammarly.com for correcting your grammar and spelling, and I can tell you that that is not good, so don't use it.

@Jasper erh ... sorry, but I'm using it and I will pursue using it :p

@Jasper It's okay, as long as you're okay with having their ads on your thing and if you don't want an actual domain.
