My older brother was really into Phineas and Ferb for a time, even wanted to write episodes for them. I've liked the ones I saw too, and I especially liked how in the movie(?), Candace actually used her inability to catch Phineas and Ferb in the act as a way to fix a problem.

@El'endiaStarman I remember those episodes.... so funny

@El'endiaStarman That'd be a fun show to write for!

@TheTinyMan Yeah, there's no limit to what can go on that show, haha

@ElizB I just hope that some day the hero, Isabella, finally gets the guy.

@TheTinyMan yeah, haha

Anybody experience their desktop computer suddenly waking up on its own? How to make that stop?

Usually if that happens, it's my cat who is to blame

@Ash hahaha aww. I don't have a cat though.
I just looked at superuser and found a few questions like it so i'll look into it later.

@Mithrandir Aww you're not ashamed of us are you?

Ugh... My only regret is that I have but one downvote to give: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/a/18110/59

@ElizB Generally if your electricity supply isn't of high quality, electrical noise can seek into the port that connects your keyboard or mouse to your system and it wakes up. Or...cosmic radiation.
Older iPhones suffered an electrical noise issue that can cause them to falsely detect a press of the "play" button on the remote control, and thus start playing as soon as headphones are connected.

This wake-up-in-the-middle-of-the-night problem is new, though. Showed up last week on both our computers, despite hers having been built at least two weeks ago and mine being almost a year old. I'm fairly sure it started happening after a Windows update.

Q: Asking my cousin to invite my GF to the wedding

patchI come from a very big family (31 first cousins) and I only see them about once a year since they live in Mexico and I live in Spain (I live alone with my brother, all the rest of the family is in Mexico). One of my cousins is getting married in November, I get along with him very well but we ra...

Cool, now the development server is down too.
This is going to be a productive day

I feel you. This morning my dev server I'm currently working on is also down

Whee.

Choices, choices... am I going to work in notepad or not?

Well, at least you're not fasting (that I know of)...

Nope, are you?

7:40 AM
Yep.

(I fast between every meal ;) )
@Mithrandir Is it a sunup-sundown thing? Or the entire 24 hours?

This week, sunup-sundown; next week, 25 hours

That's a looot of fasting

Yeah, not my favorite. Should be mostly fine, though

@Mithrandir Well, good luck! Should be ban talking about food in here, in the meanwhile? :P

7:43 AM
nah, 'tis fine
Good luck with your downed servers :P

Heh. I don't have to fix em! I'll just wait until I get an e-mail problems are over ;)
Lucky I'm home, so I'll fire up my PC and start some crochet and Netflix
I am glad I'm not in an office today

@avazula Hello, there! How are vacations going?

@AJ Hey there!I I'm good, thanks. I have little health issues but it's getting better, plus I passed my driving exam and am now allowed to drive alone :) how are you?

A J
@avazula Oh congratulations! :) You don't need a chauffeur now. :P And it's good to hear about your health. I'm good too.

@AJ Thanks :) I actually just needed to have someone with 5+ years of driving experience by my side so I could drive the car, and now I can go wherever I want by myself :)
I'm glad to hear :)
@Mithrandir Haha, my SO is a huge fan of Disney music too :p

9:45 AM
@avazula Out of curiosity, which country has this law?

Germany has a variation of that. When you get a learner's permit before 18 you're supposed to always have an experienced driver in the car

@Magisch In most U.S. states, you can get an actual license at age 16. That said, at least in the state of California, there are a number of restrictions placed on your license until you turn 18.

@gparyani I'm from France. You can pass your exam once you're 18 but you can start driving at age 15 1/2 if you're accompanied by someone who has 5+ years experience with driving.

@avazula In California, you can get a learner's permit at age 15.5 which permits you to drive with any licensed driver 25 or older. To qualify for the exam, you need to show documentation of 6 hours of professional training + 50 hours of practice with 10+ hours at night, though these two extra requirements are waived if you're 18+.

@gparyani Wow, that's precise.

9:55 AM
@avazula Next step: go to the UK or Ireland and practice driving on the left :)

@gparyani I thought about it, I have chills just thinking about it, there's no way I could switch easily xD

@avazula I actually tried driving in India, with a right-hand drive manual car and extremely chaotic traffic, the polar opposite of the U.S. (left-hand drive automatic + 99% of people respect the traffic rules), and it wasn't fun.

@avazula I almost got in an accident every time I tried crossing streets the one time I was in London ;)

@Tinkeringbell I've mastered the art of crossing streets here in Austin.
Anyway, I was once offered alcohol on an Air France flight. I declined, saying that I was actually under 21, but they said they could serve me since in France the drinking age is 16 and we were aboard a French-registered aircraft...

@gparyani Mmmh... The limit age is actually 18 and not 16 in France. I know we're known to like drinking, but still :)

10:03 AM
@avazula Interesting, they raised it. It used to be 16 at some point...but my point still applies, since I was 19 at the time.
Wow...with this wonky of a sleep pattern I could just as well claim to be in Hawaii, even though I'm in Texas, so, goodnight y'all...

Have a good one!

It's okay, you're no worse than me...
I went to sleep at 6 this morning :P

@Mithrandir You're a mystery to me :p
As long as you sleep well when you actually go to sleep...

Well...
I got up at 8:30, so there wasn't much time for that.

o_o

10:06 AM
I know who's not staying up late tonight!

And here I am, pulling an all-nighter to try and "reset" my sleep cycle.

@El'endiaStarman How'd it get off in the first place?

Is it a coincidence or are all TAS users connected in a sort of disrupted sleep pattern? o_o

Look at the bright side: I've never suffered from jet lag.

@Mithrandir do you travel a lot?

10:12 AM
@Mithrandir Most likely vacation, actually. My natural sleep cycle is from 3am to 11am-12pm, and my 9-5 job means I need to get up at 7:30am. It took a lot of work to get into a fairly stable cycle where I got 5-6 hours of sleep (or more), though it was gradually slipping later and later. And then I took a week for vacation and let my body shift back to the natural cycle.

@avazula Not really... I think the last time I flew was in '12. I was also sleeping oddly then :P

Some of y'all might find this relevant and/or useful:
Delayed sleep phase disorder (DSPD), more often known as delayed sleep phase syndrome and also as delayed sleep-wake phase disorder, is a chronic dysregulation of a person's circadian rhythm (biological clock), compared to those of the general population and societal norms. The disorder affects the timing of sleep, peak period of alertness, the core body temperature rhythm, and hormonal and other daily cycles. People with DSPD generally fall asleep some hours after midnight and have difficulty waking up in the morning. People with DSPD probably have a circadian period significantly longer than...

@El'endiaStarman that's interesting
Is there any way you could change your working hours? I know that some companies/countries are more inclined to let their employees decide their work patterns

@avazula I'm hoping to make a serious case for that soon(ish). I started keeping a sleep diary and I plan to visit a medical professional/sleep clinic soon to get some sort of evaluation. My work currently requires a standup meeting at 9:30am and besides that, management prefers that everyone be online around the same hours to facilitate communication/collaboration as needed (which is a good point).
Relatedly, I do note a statement in that Wikipedia article that severe cases of DSPD can count as a disability, which is then covered by the ADA, which requires employers to make reasonable accommodations for their employees' disabilities. Which in the case of DSPD would mean altered work hours.

@avazula My sleep pattern is perfect!
It's about the only healthy habit I have, but I manage 8 hours sleep a night :)

10:30 AM
Congratulations! :)

@JAD Nice... but I can't really see what's new skin and old, am I right in guessing the darker color is new?

JAD
nope, the light is new
the shedding starts at the head, so the easiest way is to check which part the head is attached to :P

10:41 AM
@JAD Hah, I don't know much about snakes ;) I'll try and remember it. It actually looks a bit pale, will that get darker too?

JAD
it's actually the other way around. in the week(s) before a shed, the skin becomes much darker
so the lighter parts are back to normal so to speak

Huh... okay :)
(I secretly like the darker better ;) )

JAD
hmm
her colouring does seem to change from time to time. This is rather light, sometimes she's much darker
I'm not sure what causes those variations

Well, don't ask me, I know even less :)

10:56 AM
@JAD I like snor

JAD
:)

Several years ago, I was visiting a couple friends who had quite an assortment of critters, including a couple snakes. I took a liking to one of them so they jokingly called her my girlfriend. Some time later she shed her skin and they gave it to me as a gift. :)

JAD
The shed was as long as my gf already :p
but it's always a bit longer than the snake itself, because it stretches during the shedding process
@El'endiaStarman ah nice. Honestly, we give them away as well. Gf's mom works at a kids daycare, and they love the skins
and my ball python is too much of an idiot, all his sheds are all in pieces and fragments :/

Q: Being angry on people for no good reason

d-bI just (again) discussed an interesting problem with a close (female) friend. She frequently gets angry on people for no good reason. She is aware of the problem herself but can't help it. For example, she is late for a meeting which the other party, fairly, frowns upon. This causes my friend to...

11:34 AM
Oh hey @ElizB
I just stumbled across this:

11:50 AM
@Mithrandir oh hey. I'll check it out when I can. Thanks!

1 hour later…
1:11 PM
@El'endiaStarman I hope such evaluation and follow-up will be useful. My SO has suffered from insomnia for quite a long time now and even tough it's gotten better since we moved in together, he often has nights where he barely sleeps (it's like he would just stay with his eyes closed the whole night). I can't imagine how hard it is to be deprived of sleep.

I hope so too. I consider myself quite fortunate that I don't suffer from insomnia. When I do feel tired, I have no trouble falling asleep and sleeping soundly until my alarm (or wife) wakes me up.

@El'endiaStarman Is "alarm" a nickname for @ElizB? :p

I like the fact that I can sleep whenever I want to
My stepmother is completly opposite of this. If you wake her as much as once she won't sleep the whole night

That's pretty unconvenient :/

@avazula The "or" is there for a reason! ......but yes, she does often serve as a second alarm... <_<

1:20 PM
@El'endiaStarman I know, I was joking :)
btw I'm curious, are you guys the same age?

@avazula haha yeah.... it seems I am sometimes the alarm. the alarm can go off, but he'll turn it off and doze off again
i'll just poke him before I run out the door

@ElizB lol :p

@avazula just about the same, yeah

Hello dear btw :)

hello :)

1:28 PM
Okay!

Why?

@ElizB "Hey honey you need to wake..." boop on the nose "Oh okay snooze then..."

JAD
@Magisch just be glad it isn't the whack you'd give an alarm :P

@Magisch I imagine @El'endiaStarman wishes it was like that. :P
if necessary, i'll give a jab at his side
he usually dislikes that so i use that as a last resort

@ElizB I passed my driving exam and I joked with my SO that the next step is the PACS (it's like a light version of marriage in France and it helps a lot reducing taxes) but that my family will say I'm too young to get married. I thought about it and all my friends who are married are actually engaged to someone older, which may explain why people did not criticize them (that) much (but still way too much. It's no one's business than the couple's)
It's incredible how society looks differently at marriage depending on the country. My Morrocan and Senegalese friends are being harrassed for they are not married at age 23. I'm being frowned upon at when I simply say we're considering PACS with my SO lol

1:34 PM
@Magisch Bahahaha I should start doing that... <_< ...or not.

@El'endiaStarman Something tells me someone will not be happy about it :p

@El'endiaStarman Choose wisely, dear.

@Magisch hahahaha

user15026
My husband is here this week and I have realized that if an alarm doesn't wake him, I have yet to figure out what to do to get him to wake up. I hesitate to use any sort of physicality because both of us have trauma responses there, potentially. It's just funny in the sense of "huh, gonna have to figure that one out". I guess you never stop learning new things about your partner (especially when you only see them in person a few times a year)

tbh if someone wakes me up with touching I usually instinctually deck them one before I'm awake
then again I also instinctually do that when someone taps my shoulder

@Ash If you don't want to touch, I propose a healthy oldfashioned bucket of ice cold water :)

JAD
@Ash try pulling off the sheets
works with my gf
although I'm not so sure it'd work on me

1:42 PM
@JAD for you in particular, placing Snor on your GF would probably do the trick

good lord, seems like we have a bunch of mean people over here :p

Shout 'Spider'... it may help too

Years of martial arts means that I can and have reacted violently quickly when woken up with a poke in the wrong place. One of my roommates learned that the hard way one morning and used a foam sword to poke me the next morning.

JAD
@Magisch uh, if someone's first reaction is to deck them, I'm not putting snor in the battlelines.

I did ask a question about it @avazula : interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/9016/…

JAD
1:43 PM
plus, she isn't scared of them

user15026
@Magisch this is the sort of response I worry about yes

Although the spider one works best with tickles, which don't meet the restraint about 'don't touch'

Morning, everyone! :-) Man...I should get enough sleep more.

@TheTinyMan Hey there :)

user15026
@JAD that might work, I should try that next time.

1:43 PM
@JAD It'd be akin to be woken up by a kitten

user15026
@Tinkeringbell see that would work if I was the sleeping one

@Magisch Oh, okay. I was actually referring to all those suggestions to wake somebody up without physical contact :p

JAD
1:44 PM
@Magisch ah like that. Might work. But not something I'd like to try when still figuring out how someone reacts how they react to being woke by touch

You guys are bad with trauma :-P

@Magisch you TFGITW me with that comment :p

A: Waking up in the morning when standard alarms fail

apaulThe priceless component in this operation is a simple plug timer: The price on these can go from anywhere from $5 for simple rotary models to $30 for high end digital models. The fun part is that you can plug just about anything into them and have it turn on when you're ready to wake up in ...

Hehehe

user15026
I am picturing it and it is cracking me up

It worked lol

JAD
@apaul heh, I had an alarm with a heli-fan on top. The alarm would only stop when it was placed back. It worked really well, until it flew behind a drawer

Long time ago, and I already had the jankie fan.

JAD
waking up thinking "shit shit shit shit, must turn of the noise. Where is that damned thing this time" was a nice and peaceful way to start the day

1:48 PM
@Magisch I actually have the same problem as mentioned in your question (well, maybe not to that extent). My mother loves touching me with the tip of their fingers and then she leaves running and laughing while I yell that I don't wanna be touched. It's become a game for her. I hate when she does that lol

I have in the past decked a colleague one pretty hard accidentally

@Magisch Oh ._.

She's like 5ft1 and 110 lbs and I knocked her to the ground because she tried to gain my attention via shoulder tap

@Magisch Was she aware you can't stand such contact?

not beforehand no

1:51 PM
That's unfortunate

My mom threw one of my boots at me when I was asleep once. Not as bad as it sounds... I talk in my sleep, can carry on short conversations without realizing, apparently there's no filter and I curse a lot though.

@apaul My sisters talk in their sleep too. Sometimes they yell and it wakes me up and creeps me out
I'll never get used to it I think haha

@Magisch PTSD?
@avazula The talking isn't so bad as the walking. Sleepy me does strange things.

@apaul No, I'm just sensitive to touch. sensory issues

@Magisch Ah.
Thought that was my issue for a few years, more recently found out that it was a form of hyper vigilance.

2:03 PM
even when I fully expect it I really hate touching people

@Magisch Kinda have the same problem, unless it's someone I know really very well.
I can do handshakes when really necessary, but huggy strangers irk me something awful.

familiarity changes almost nothing for me
touching someone is just too much information at once. A person's skin is a very complex texture and the whole nonverbal communication thing that goes on at the same time is a bit too much

@Magisch Have you tried any therapy?

handshakes work ... just. Although if you're perceptive you'll notice I'm not comfortable

Yay :) just finished meeting with my mentor-professor. Went well, she's impressed with my progress so far!

2:08 PM
Nice

@apaul They suggested some meds. I'm thoroughly not down for using psychotic drugs to treat my sensory issues. I have it mostly under control in public

The presentation is basically due by the 26th, plus or minus a day or two for edits, then giving the presentation itself on the 4th and 5th of october :D
almost there!!

@Magisch Cognitive behavioral therapy has been working well for me. No meds, and tends to be goal oriented, which is nice.

@Magisch I agree with that... I have ADD, they suggested meds... I tried. Hated it.

I have a deep rooted fear of stuff that alters my state of mind anyways
It's why I never drink alcohol or use marijuana

2:12 PM
@apaul That's what I do as well! I love it. Plus some massage therapy on the side to help force my body to relax

@ElizB Briefly dated a massage therapist once upon a time, it was nice.
@Magisch Some things really can help. The research into psychedelics looks really promising.

@apaul It'll never be for me I'm afraid
I really detest the idea of having my state of mind modified

Difference being, individual controlled environment experiences, rather than long term daily medications.

@Magisch As long as you hate/fear drugs, never take them. You're bound to have a bad trip

JAD
@Tinkeringbell spoken like a true Dutchie :P

2:19 PM
@JAD Well, it is drugs education 101
I don't know about you, but in my school they actually taught me stuff that came in handy in real life too :P

@Tinkeringbell Depends on the substance. Some things don't really work that way.

@apaul It is the general advice. And I've experienced that it's true even for alcohol. If you're anxious and drunk, that's bad.
marijuana is generally seen as relaxing, but it can give bad trips too

@Tinkeringbell Eh... Some things eliminate anxiety as a part of their function.

@apaul They usually do. Alcohol can make me more relaxed if I'm in a setting where I trust I can be safely drunk. Noticing that you're drunk against your wishes in an environment where you didn't really feel safe to begin with? That's bad.
I understand there's certain drugs that in medicinal doses may help against fear and anxiety

I get that, but I wasn't talking about alcohol, or being in an uncomfortable environment, or people taking things without consent.

2:24 PM
@Tinkeringbell in my area, drug education 101 = "don't" :P

@EmC True. And there's ... if you do, keep this in mind ;)

@Tinkeringbell yeah, I've learned a lot since going out into the wide world / internet ;)

@apaul Magisch was talking drugs and alcohol though. That's what I reacted most to.
I now see you've been talking more about medicinal stuff than recreational

@Tinkeringbell Was more referring to the research into psychedelics and dissociatives. Primarily MDMA, psilocybin, and ketamine.

@apaul psychedelics still seem like a strange way to treat anxiety to me
but maybe they can...
hopefully they will ;)

2:30 PM
@Tinkeringbell Google it.

even the medicinal stuff can be scary.. there's a lot of nasty side effects possible :/

@EmC Which one are you referring to?

@Tinkeringbell I read an article somewhat recently that LSD was shown to be effective in treating PTSD

@EmC Same goes for psilocybin, and MDMA

@apaul psilocybin is the stuff in magic mushrooms, right?

2:33 PM
@apaul more of a general statement based on reading various people's experiences, commonly weight gain, increase in suicidal thoughts, etc. like it can take a while to figure out the right dosage and type of medicine that's effective

@Tinkeringbell Ya
@EmC Which substance, and what usage pattern?

@apaul I don't know specifics, sorry

Serotonin syndrome is a risk with MDMA, but only when used often/habitually. (Suicidal thoughts)
Part of the reason they're looking into some of these is because they're medically safer than most common medications. Sounds weird given the legal status and stigma, but that's what the data shows.
Been volunteering with a harm reduction organization lately, interesting stuff.

2:48 PM
@apaul What have you been doing exactly? What kind of harm is it reducing?

@Tinkeringbell It's an organization that offers free unbiased education about drugs, as well as no questions asked substance testing.

@apaul Sounds great :)

What country are you in @apaul? if you don't mind sharing ofc.

I'm in the US
@Tinkeringbell It's been fun. Meet some really interesting characters, and on occasion play a small part in keeping them alive. It's helping me to redirect some of my vigilantism in a more productive way ;)

4:02 PM
@apaul Sounds good! (Sorry, had to drop off for dinner). So, is the education on an individual basis then? I know some organizations over here, but they mostly visits schools (that's their 'educational purpose')

4:30 PM
@Tinkeringbell More individual, nightclubs, festivals.

@apaul Ah. I'm not usually near those events. So I wouldn't know if there's education done at those as well ;)

@Tinkeringbell It's been more than a few years since I was going to those things on the regular myself.

5:24 PM
@apaul sounds like a good concept

was really sleepy this morning. Just had a 15 minute nap, feeling so much better.

I'm a firm believer that most of the societal harm from most drugs comes from the stigma and disincentives for addicts to seek help, not from the drug abuse itself
my fear of mind altering substances is my own thing and one of my less rational fears, but I still can't shake it

I have that fear as well, but i have drunk alcohol and smoked once, but always make sure I'm in a good environment and I don't drink enough to get drunk.

@ESR, i understand that, but the OP ask how to interrupt someone when they've already started, to which i think gnashers is probably the best as it offers the highest damage limitation — Blade Wraith 8 hours ago

"Already a group in your area" there are several where I live. I used to go to one, but gave up, because it was trolled by people who could only manage a few words, and wanted to use us as unpaid teachers. So if you join one of these groups, make sure you are at the level they are expecting. — RedSonja 8 hours ago

Q: Forgot something doctor told me during consulation

JRGI forgot something important that the doctor I saw for a consultation told me. Would it be rude of me to email his practice and ask him to tell me again what I have forgotten? I paid a lot of money for the consult, so I think I am entitled to a little bit of courtesy help. But I am not sure. That...
