Q: How do I help my girlfriend get out of this dangerous situation with her parents?

ZYRHello Interpersonal Stack Exchange, About two weeks ago I posted the question "How do I help my girlfriend defend herself against manipulative parents?". I recommend reading that one first as it contains some preliminary info that ties into this post. I believe that it's necessary to start a ne...

Q: Politely recommend budget help to a debtor?

dmaTo address duplication concerns, this belongs on IPS rather than workplace stack exchange or finance, as I would like to address the specific issue of recommending budget help, and handle this as a friend rather than as a colleague, so am looking for an IPS specific answer (although I won't mind ...

Goood Monday Morning everyone! Q: What to tell family who ask about a friend I had a falling out with?

DonttryitI had a very friend who I was close with that I knew for a long time. My family even knew him from birthday parties and we had gone on trips together etc. My friend recently involved me in a scam and basically stole several hundreds of dollars (more details in my other questions). As it is now ...

At the moment this is an opinion-based question - you are asking what you should tell them, and we can't decide that for you. You really need to outline what you want to achieve (eg how much you want them to know) and then ask how to do that. — Astralbee 1 min ago

It sounds like both parents suffer from NPD. I'd advise the two of you to look at some of the stuff at reddit.com/r/raisedbynarcissists and compare. If it fits... Narcissist tend to make their victims think "they're doing it all for them", so it could help your GF to observe and judge the behaviour in other people - it's easier to say "this stranger is abusive" than to come to terms with "my parents are abusive". I'd advise you to post the story there, too - you'll get a ton of experienced advice, even techniques like e.g. "grey rocking" etc. — R. Schmitz 32 secs ago

Q: How to recommend meditation to someone with anxiety?

Inertial IgnoranceI have a friend with anxiety and depression, let's call him "Bob". As someone who deals with anxiety as well, I found that mindfulness meditation has significantly helped me. It didn't solve all my problems by any means (yet), but I know it's improving my life and I've only been doing it for a fe...

I'm voting to close this question because I feel that the recommendation of a particular kind of treatment or therapy is off-topic for the site and actually quite dangerous. We don't know that meditation is a good idea for this person. — Astralbee 59 secs ago

Wow, there truly is no one there these days xD
is everyone on vacation?
@Tinkeringbell How comes it's still open?
I may sound harsh here but this requires professional help, and if we don't close it, it'd be making an exception considering all other questions we've closed because they were needing clinical help

@avazula I'm... struggling with writing the close-reason ;) And closing it singlehandedly ;)

11:33 AM
you can do it Tink! we believe in you
not that that helps you to actually write the thing :p

The problem is... all of the stuff described in the question probably needs attention from a professional ... yet the question itself, of how to tell the parents certain things, might not?

Hey everyone

well, since both (even upvoted) answers are basicaly: "you don't, get help from the system ASAP" I don't think you can do more than close the question and leave the 2 answers ...

You two have good points
Hi Chilly :)

Hi Chilly

11:38 AM
How is everyone?

@Chilly Meh.

Slightly stressed over the planning for wedding and honeymoon ... which will only increase the closer that gets :D
but at least it's the fun kind of stress

I have to clean the entire house since my parents will be getting home from their holiday wednesday, I keep cooking food for me and my brothers just to get text messages saying 'we'll be eating at McDonalds'... :/

also been avoiding my tasks at work ... which means even more stress since those HAVE to be done before I can leave XD

Brothers aren't really helping with the house, since 'they work all day'
and I am still trying to determine whether or not to close a question.

11:41 AM
Have you tried the: "I'm done being your maid, just ask if you want me to actually take your needs into account again" and then ignore them as well?

Sounds like a bit of a whirlwind for you both at the minute

@Tinkeringbell is it practicable to send OP a chat message to give them the standard professional help info?

Q: How can I stop enabling my brothers without my mom exploding?

TinkeringbellMy parents are away from home for little private holidays on a quite regular basis (once every 2/3 months), where they leave me home alone with my 2 brothers for 2-5 days. I'm a 26-year-old female, my brothers are 22 and 16. Since I joined IPS, I have seen some questions and answers about 'not ...

or were your parents taking that out on you when they get back since you were the oldest/most responsible person in the house?

(And I'm sorry for your brothers)

11:42 AM
@avazula Not really, no. :/

@Tinkeringbell Yeesh. That would have been convenient.
How are you @Chilly ? Is your father in law feeling better?

Personally, I pay people to help me clean up.
another effect of the autism
Im great at work because of the structure, home... no
CAn't organize myself.

@avazula I'm not good at all to be honest.. He passed away last Tuesday unfortunately.

@RichardU Once I've moved out, that was my plan too ;)

@Tinkeringbell maybe you can hire a cleaning service and get the money from your brithers

11:44 AM
Have you tried exploding in your moms face as well? Wouldn't help much overall, but at least relieves your stress a bit in the moment ^^,

@Chilly How man, I'm so sorry.

@Tinkeringbell it has always driven my family and friends mad that I am very competent in all things work related, but helpless with the rest of life.

Or if you're mentally strong enough. Just stay extremely calm and tell your mom you're not responsible

You've got all my thoughts and feelings @Chilly

@RichardU Hah... I don't think asking my brothers to pay for stuff right now would be going well ;) I'm earning a lot, spending next to nothing since I live at home (I only pay my share of groceries, gas, water, light, internet... and a little because mom does the laundry ;) )

11:45 AM
I can't even balance my checkbook and have gotten in trouble with the IRS a few times

if she shouts at you, just point to your borthers: "shout at them instead"
works only if you can actually stay really calm during this

@Tinkeringbell well, maybe you could just bite the bullet and pay for a service yourself if it saves your sanity

@avazula He had a heart attack then a brain bleed on Tuesday morning then another big brain bleed on Tuesday evening.. Thank you, that means a lot to me

@Imus She's... a bit better now. Actually demanding the brothers do stuff. So I already don't have to make beds, and vacuum clean their rooms for example.
@RichardU Meh. I just really dislike cleaning and with two free ranging males it's useless anyways. I mean, I can clean the bathroom now, and come back tonight and find shitstains in the toilet again :/

@Chilly I am sorry for your loss

11:47 AM
@Chilly That must have been a very difficult moment.

@RichardU Thank you

JAD
@Tinkeringbell sounds like it's time to find a place for yourself ;)

@Tinkeringbell decades of research have inicated that the disgust reaction is much lower in males... sorry

@Chilly My condolences.

@Chilly My sincerest condolences as well Chilly

11:48 AM
@Chilly I lost my father back in 2015. It's tough

@avazula I can't believe it's happened, I don't know how to make sense of it

@RichardU It appears so. Anyhow. I can do laundry and a bit of vacuuming today, and I'll do the bathroom/toilet/kitchen tomorrow. That way it hopefully will look a little bit presentable when mom comes home.

Thanks @Tinkeringbell and @Imus

@Chilly That'll probably take a while. Do you have anyone close to you that you can talk about it? Or even better, that can take your mind off of things without being bothered that you're "not really there" in the moment?

@Chilly It takes some time to sink in. About 2-4 weeks. You have to get over the shock first. Make sure you're around friends later

11:50 AM
@Chilly My father died violently and unpredictably 8 months ago. I recall the unbearable pain of such unfair event, so I get that you're upset right now.
I don't know if it'd help to tell you that eventually the pain alleviates little by little ...

@JAD Still working on that. Saved up a lot of money already, but I've now got it in my head that I don't want to move to the other side of the country :/ And I don't want to live in Zwolle either, but the small town I grew up in doesn't have housing in my price-range for sale :/

@avazula that's hard too. Those are the hardest to deal with. When someone is sick, you start to prepare, but when it's sudden, you have to deal with the shock, and if it's not natural, the feeliings of injustice as well. My deepest sympathies to you.

JAD
@Tinkeringbell and anything south of Zwolle?

@Imus Yeah I have a few people I can talk to, I'm just numb right now though. If I'm feeling this awful I can only begin to imagine how bad my other half is feeling, I just want to be able to be there for him

@Tinkeringbell How comes it's so difficult to find affordable housing in the Netherlands? I'm sorry for you :/
@RichardU I appreciate that, thanks.

11:52 AM
@JAD Wezep is south of Zwolle XD

JAD
@Tinkeringbell rip
@avazula more demand than supply

@RichardU There's a good support network around us here so we'll have people when we need them I hope

@avazula That, and I'm on my own. So I have a pretty low price range that I can afford, and I'm picky ;)

JAD
lot's of young people looking to buy their first home, loads of older people staying healthy for longer, so not leaving their homes

@Chilly If it can help, helping my siblings and comfort them actually helped me go through it. I'm the oldest of 9, so I had to wipe my sisters' tears. Helped me to be strong.

11:53 AM
@avazula life is so so unfair sometimes, I'm sorry for your loss

@Tinkeringbell Oh, okay. I hope you'll find soon :)

@Chilly IT's good to have people around when all the dust settles, everyone has gone home, everyone has stopped saynig "if you need anything, let me know". After all that stops, and your routine starts to go back to normal, that's when you really feel the loss, and need the support.

@avazula Yeah I'm okay when I'm with my other half, I'm able to hold it together so as not to upset him too much, it's when I'm alone that I just come crashing down

@avazula I don't entirely dislike this one... but it's far out of reach of public transport and I'm not at a place where I can say 'I'll just get a car ;)'

@Chilly Thank you. Now he's my motivation to go on in life towards what's good for me :)

11:55 AM
Also, that one is already sold XD

JAD
@Tinkeringbell and this (@avazula). In respons to the financial crisis of 2008, some pretty strict rules were put in place for getting a mortgage. There is a legal maximum amount you can loan given a certain income. This doesn't work out nicely for people that are on their own with a starting salary

@Tinkeringbell Ahah! So you're looking for buying and not renting?

JAD
@avazula rent is an entirely different story.

@Tinkeringbell It is nice, actually.

@avazula Yes. Because that way, I'll start building my own wealth. If I start renting now, I'm afraid I'll end up like a lot of people I know, renting for live and never owning a property.

11:56 AM
@RichardU Yeah I know, I found it harder about 6 weeks after my gran passed last year because not many people were around to offer help anymore so I want to make sure that doesn't happen again
@avazula That's lovely, I'm sure he'd be very proud of you

@JAD I'm earning just a little too much for 'social rent', which means I have to rent privately if I want to rent. That easily means 700 or 800 euros of rent each month :/

JAD
There are two ways you can rent here. 1) social renting (relatively cheap, but looooooong waiting lists (10-15 years isn't out of the ordinary in big cities)), or 2) unregulated rent, which is more expensive and landlords can (and generally will) put high restrictions on income for their own security

@Tinkeringbell I get it. My relatives push me to buy a condo (or a house to live in it), so I don't lose money. It actually freaks me out to buy real estate because it seems like grown-up stuff, but hearing your stories and how it's going in the Netherlands I actually feel pretty lucky xD
@Chilly :)
@Tinkeringbell That's huge ._. are you leaving near Amsterdam?

JAD
@avazula that's nothing. Amsterdam is way more

@avazula No. On the other side of the country actually

11:58 AM
@avazula there are advantages to renting as well as to owning. IF you are never planning on moving, Owning is better. If you do, renting is better

If you want to live in Amsterdam or Utrecht you'd easily pay a 1000 a month.

JAD
@Tinkeringbell a common practice I encountered when looking for a place to rent was that landlords ask for a minimum of 4x the rent as income, else they won't even consider you

@RichardU ?? That's 2 times renting ;)

JAD
I think that's the point

@JAD Yeah, that too...

JAD
11:59 AM
so a rent of 800 euros then also requires having an income of 3200.
and the thing is. There is so much demand, there is always someone that does fit those requirements

Ach! I fixed it

JAD
so they don't care

@JAD Yeah. My brother is struggling with that too now. We'd actually just buy a slightly bigger apartment together if not for the fact that it's a paperwork mess.

JAD
@RichardU If I look at my rent, versus the mortgage I would pay for the same apartment, that's almost twice that amount

@RichardU That looks better. And no, I'm not really planning on ever moving (maybe if I reach the ripe old age of pensioning, I'll try and get an apartment in a seashore town).

12:01 PM
@Tinkeringbell Whenever I see someone talking about moving across the country, I think 6,000 + KM

JAD
@Tinkeringbell I ended up being lucky. We hit a landlord that wanted to leave for vacation within a few days, so was anxious to close. They allowed my gf's father to sign as a guarantor
@RichardU that's across the continent
across the country is less than 300km here

@JAD Hence why I'm not planning on moving ;)

@JAD The USA is very very big

JAD
I know

@RichardU Yeah, almost like one side of a continent to another :P

12:03 PM
@JAD When I owned my home, i paid more in taxes than for my mortgage

JAD
I don't think you can drive in a straight line in europe for 6000km and still be in europe
@RichardU here, when you rent, a bunch of the taxes are redirected to the tenant :/

@JAD YEs, it's a different world

JAD
yeah
from what I can see on MoneySE though, mortgage interests are a lot lower here than over there though

@JAD there are parts of the USA where there are less than 5 people per square KM

JAD
2-2.5% here is pretty normal

12:05 PM
@JAD yes our interest rates are higher so that we can be fair

Reading all this has made me realize that I'll be dealing with this in less than 3 years once I'm done uni :)

JAD
@TheRealLester enjoy it while it lasts
;)

@TheRealLester Hope for a banking crash again right before you want to search for a house. loaning for <2% is awesome

JAD
@Imus except that no bank will want to provide a loan to someone that just graduated

perhaps...

JAD
12:07 PM
or at least, they'll be more stingy

me and my GF rented for 3 years, relatively small apartment
as tink said around 800 per month (little more for us, but divided over us 2, so really cheap)
now 3 years later we have our own house ^^,

JAD
yeah, me too. We're renting for 1.5 years now, 850 a month for 65 m2.
nice :)

@Imus nice

I think it was more around 900 a month for 100m²

JAD
but all that time, my gf was still studying, so we were working off of one income
this week she's starting her first job, so maybe we'll be able to move soon

12:09 PM
65 m² sounds euhm, cozy :)

JAD
@Imus this is in the same block as us: funda.nl/koop/gouda/appartement-40758117-kolkmanstraat-2

it's good enough if you're saving up for a house, not if you plan on renting for longer times ... which highly depends on prices for houses around you I guess :p

@JAD You indeed can't.
@JAD We're actually endorsed to buy right after graduation in France. That's insane.

JAD
@avazula you could probably tilt it a bit, from SW portugal to NW Russia

@Imus I live in a 300,000 people city, our rent is abt 600€ for 60 square meters

JAD
12:12 PM
north of Moscow

@JAD ah yeah, didn't think of it :)
@JAD From Lisbon to the closest town in Russia, there's 4,2000km.

JAD
the western part of russia (I think till the Ural) is Europe, so it can extend a bit
@Imus tbh, with all those difficulties, you grab what you can take.
and for the last while, it has been sufficient.

@JAD I fully get that yes :) and if we weren't as lucky on finding our relatively cheap apartment 4 years ago we most likely would've gotten something ismilar

@JAD That's impressive how Dutch looks like a mix between German and English, though the pronounciation is truly unique

@avazula most likely cause Dutch German and English are all Germanic languages :)
even West Germanic

12:24 PM
@Imus I was debating learning either French or Spanish but I think I'm gonna learn Gothic lol

I don't see Dutch in your diagram

Netherlandic
most likely
first diagram I could find :D
Dutch and German are really close (yet really not the same)
English sounds really different since there's been a "great vowel shift" roughly 700 years ago (if I remember it correctly).. other than that gramar follows relatively similar rules
which is why for us dutch people it's a lot easier to learn english than it is to learn french for example

Yeah, but French really don't try hard to learn ahah

In Belgium we're kinda forced to learn French as second language -.-

Though it's supposed to be scientifically proven we can't have a good English accent... because of our vocal chords?

12:28 PM
I'm still not proficient in it XD

@avazula I'm always amazed when we go to France that people prefer point and grunt over a few words of English :/

ah, that's stiff ._. are you from the from the Flanders?

yush

@Tinkeringbell we're really not nice indeed ._.

Although last week I met Spanish ladies who didn't bother to speak English to ask for their way. Fortunately for them my friend speaks Spanish, otherwise I'd not have been able to gibber anything xD
@ExtrovertedMainMan Interesting question, surprising pseudo

Should be noted that in most countries people really aren't used to hearing english either. So I can understand being really hesitant to try to speak it. (Subbing > Dubs any time)

interesting

JAD
@Imus With some goodwill, I think you can talk to eachother in your own language and understand it though
@avazula heh, I remember a vacation in portugal. We were in a pretty rural area, and they didn't speak english. My mom managed to get her point across well enough in french

I don't know why French is appreciated that much :)
though it's surely way closer to Portuguese than English is

@avazula meh, I liked it better in highschool than german
Ah it's pouring here. I love the sound of rain on a roof

Just to back up @Yelm's comment, this article is quite interesting psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-science-behind-behavior/2016‌04/… It isn't saying Mindfulness meditation is a bad thing, but it does discuss reasons why 'participants should be screened carefully for their suitability before undertaking this practice, and its teachers should be properly trained and supervised'. — Spagirl 39 secs ago

@JAD (sorry for late reaction, had a meeting.) I'd say not really enough to really understand everything. With a little bit of pointing added you could have a conversation and understand what it's about, yes.
@ElizB Hi :)

Hopefully the caffiene kicks in soon enough so I can wake up properly and get working

@ElizB good morning. Couldn't contact anyone over the weekend, but have a few feelers out.

Matcha doesn't have as much caffeine as coffee but it lasts longer and there's no crash. :)
@RichardU Great, thanks for the update. Levi's been going up and down, and just trying to be patient in his situation.

@Imus yeah exactly.

Q: How to convince my band members to play different songs?

Michele IppolitoI am currently playing in a band of beginners with varying degrees of skill. It all started because my friend and I (the two guitarists) are enrolled in a music school that closes for the summer, and we wanted to practice together. A few friends wanted to join and now we have a typical rock band...

@Imus English is an amazing language. It is an amalgam of the native tongues of the land, plus German, then after the norman invasion, French was superimposed on top of the existing language, then had grammatical structure artificially wedged into it which worked about as well as trying to apply European football(soccer) rules onto American football.
What makes it amazing is that anyone can communicate in it at all
I actually learned some Old English, as well as some middle English. Old English resembles modern German more than modern English, and middle English is so difficult that I'm sure that modern English evolved more out of necessity than anything else

@RichardU That's really interesting. There are some difficulties in translating from some English to ASL while singing older church hymns compared to modern christian songs because of the structure.

@RichardU I did not know this :o interesting

Hi all

@ElizB English is also constantly evolving, and since English is an open language, we just take words and use them, without modification, into English. Best example I can think of is Schadenfreude.
@Imus The autistic superpower of obsessive research strikes again :D

1:37 PM
@RichardU oftentimes the spelling is modified though, like rucksack (from dutch rugzak)

@Tinkeringbell I know what you mean :( I'm stuck renting for the forseeable future

Some people take offense to the phrase "weaponized autism", but I think it's funny, because over the years people have jokingly said to me "It's a good thing you don't use your powers for the forces of evil"

@RichardU For example, the line "Naught be all else, save that thou art" ..... gyah. I would have to sign a whole sentence in ASL in order to translate that properly... maybe "All else nothing, you alone"... something like that. I don't even feel great about that one :P

@RichardU Being different doesn't always have to be a bad thing right? :)

@Imus I think much of that was done by Webster, standardizing American English at least.

1:39 PM

Oh, interesting note: American English is different from UK English by design. When Webster wrote his dictionary, he deliberately changed the spelling of words. Colour became color, armour became armor, defence became defense, et cetera. At the time, America still hated the British with a white-hot passion.

@RichardU huh, interesting!

Just to make sure you understood my remark as I intended: I meant you having autism (thus being different from the average person) isn't only a disadvantage. At certain things it can be (and is!) an advantage as well

@ElizB I am a history nut.
@Imus that's exactly as I took it :D

@Tinkeringbell My boyfriend is employed through an agency and I have a considerable amount of student debts. Our income is just above the treshold for social housing, so we have to rent a house of over 710 euro a month. At the same time, legally, we can only get a mortgage of around 40k, which has a 150 euro montly term. Why do they expect us to be able to afford 710+ euro in rent, but not a mortgage of over 150 euro?

1:41 PM
@Imus I am trying to teach that to my eldest daughter, who is dealing with being on the spectrum as well.

@RichardU Reminds me of my hubby and my mom, actually. They both love talking about history as well :)

I'm guessing you're better qualified than most to explain her the differences and show when it's an advantage and when to put in extra effort to understand how to "read" a situation

@ElizB even a cursory review of history demonstrates George Santayana's warning of "He who is ignorant of history is doomed to repeat it" is axiomatic.
@Imus Well, I had a stroke 10 years ago that set me back to square 1, so I had to relearn everything, including how to relate to the "normal" population again from scratch, so it's still fairly fresh in my mind.

At least in this situation it turns out as an advantage ^.^
And I'd argue that in certain situations it's actualy the "normal" population that has to learn how to cooperate with people like you instead

@Imus having been brought down all the way to homelessness, I learned much about survival and adjusting.
IT also gave me a very strong sense of duty and obligation to others.

Do the two people constantly outvote you and you only get to play their songs? Currently your question could be interpreted as: "I want the band to only play the songs I think are of value. How do I get them to do that despite us voting for what we want?" Having played in many, many bands, I think your assumption "we are supposed to be studying hard rock or blues" is nothing but pure opinion. Some people do it that way, maybe traditionally it is done that way, but that doesn't mean you have to. Are you just saying: "I've learned it like this, I think it's optimal, now we have to do it!" ? — Raditz_35 1 min ago

Matched regex(es) ["possible-aic"]

that's both sad to hear that you had to go through that and awesome that you actually made it

I cannot stand to see others go through unnecessary suffering
@Imus overall, I consider it to be a blessing, as I learned much. It made me very empathetic
Karl Jung spoke about learning to face, and embrace your shadow. I firmly believe that. If you cannot face just how bad a person you can be, you cannot make yourself into the person you can be, because you are unaware of your own flaws.

@RichardU Same.

@Belle-Sophie because a mortgage is a 30 year obligation
or however long you take to pay it back

seems like the internet is not behaving at my work...

Pfffew! @RichardU Hope it helps: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/a/17578/1599. It's what worked when people explained stuff to me though, not what worked when I explained anything to people since well, I never had to do so.

TL;DR
:p
I do hope it's useful to Richard though ^.^

It looks good to me. I usually am the one explaining things for my hubby after he disappears. His kind of meltdown is more of the disappearing kind, and only once or twice he got really mad. He's a mostly chill person, so I don't see him losing friends over disappearing, he just finds a good time to do so.

3:19 PM
@Tinkeringbell thanks, that was very helpful. I think the part of a meltdown that is the hardest for me to deal with is an inability to disengage when it gets bad. I know this often comes across as me needing to have the last word, but it's more like compulsive behavior (AS is sometimes misdiagnosed as OCD, BTW). If I can learn to not battle with people when confronted, I think I'll do much better in life.
@ElizB the internet never behaves.... Hmmmm, since the internet has little to no accountability, and the internet also is the playground of the ID, if the internet ever achieves sentience of it's own, it will likely be a manifestation of our collective ID. Frightening, isn't it?

Huh, yeah.

@ElizB sorry, my brain goes to strange places, LOL

@RichardU That's okay! it's an interesting thought. I'm still not quite awake and doing some work. :)

@RichardU Hmm... This gives a slightly different perspective on some of our interactions. Unstoppable force meets immovable object.

@apaul context is everything. I also have very little sense of connotation.

3:29 PM
Not trying to snark, just thinking that it makes more sense now.

for example, I cannot see why the word "crippled" is offensive when "disabled" is not. Crippled means that something's functioning has been severely hampered, but disabled means not working or useless. So I don't see why calling someone disabled, a worse condition than being crippled, is actually less offensive.
@apaul I get your meaning.
@apaul for example, when I speak of trolling and how effective I was at it, I only mean to warn people not to fall for the tricks. It is not a boast, it is an observation.
Plus, I typically trolled neo-Nazis right off a few boards.
I remember one platform didn't do anything about it, so I reported the neo-Nazis to the FBI, and the platform to the anti defamation league
I mostly targeted various bullies, by trolling them so they'd give up their target in favor of coming after me.

@RichardU Probably the historical context. "Cripple" used to be a common term, then it gradually became a slur in common usage. Language evolves like everything else.

@apaul well, I get the concept, but not the connotation. Connotation is difficult for me.

@RichardU I use a variation of that technique.
I think where we part ways is the idea that "people are just too sensitive"

@apaul You guys warm my filthy little heart <3

3:46 PM
@apaul not so much as you might think. When I say that, I mean that you have got to be tough to survive in this world. You can't protect people from jackasses, as they will always be out there. I've had people "test" my deaf ear by screaming in it, and other worse thngs.
I really don't know a better way of putting it other than "you can't allow yourself to be too sensitive because people will use that against you"
That's one reason trolling works so well. One time I had someone tell me that I should kill myself. I just told him that if I had to live his life, I would.

@RichardU I can relate, though I have always snapped back at whoever does that. I usually avoid such people.

As someone who's had to deal with trolls a lot...
meh ;p

@ElizB Oh, GEEEZ, people are STILL doing that.

I feel sorry for anyone whose self worth is built on trying to break someone else down
or... some of the other stuff they do

@JourneymanGeek and that's the way to look at them.
@JourneymanGeek when I worked in retail (long story) I would coach my people to not let the customers get to them (and boy were some people cruel) as they only had to deal with those idiots for a few minutes, the idiots had to live with themselves their entire lives.

3:50 PM
ow
lol
I try to be nice to retail folks.

@RichardU I haven't experienced it as much as I grew older. People will still ask how much I can hear, and I usually invent a smart response that let them know I am not kidding, and that it was rude to do so in a derogatory manner.

(also efficient. I'm the sort of person who prefers to be in and out as soon as possible in stores ;p)

@ElizB yeah not being able to hear != not being able to feel pain.
@JourneymanGeek if you ever want to learn how to hate people with a burning passion, go into retail.

@JourneymanGeek Same here, I used to work at a grocery store in the produce section, stocking and cutting fruit, putting cut fruit into labeled containers. Some customers got REALLY frustrated at me for simply not understanding them the first time.

It was when I was working retail that I had someone tell me that my employer "shouldn't be able to hire people like you"
@ElizB oh, I got that too.

3:52 PM
heh
hating people is... inefficient...

@RichardU Ouch, jeez. I only worked for a year but most of that time was inside the back room cutting fruit.
so yay no people interaction :P

@ElizB since I am profoundly deaf on one side (nerve deafness), I would have people not believing me. If they were on my bad side, or behind me, I wouldn't hear them, but if I was facing them, I could read their lips or hear them if they were on my good side.
I actually had to have a manager explain to a customer that I couldn't hear well because he didn't believe me

@ElizB I rarely need to interact with people unless stuff breaks

@JourneymanGeek I mean that in a tongue in cheek fashion. But you do get to see people at their worst.

@RichardU that's probably true

3:55 PM
You should see the look of relief on people's faces when things go wrong and I say "that's okay, I understand, I've worked retail."

@RichardU wow, huh. that's not happened to me, I just redirect the person to manager or co-worker and just slink away

@ElizB well, I do have one working ear, and like the autism, I can function and "pass for normal" most of the time.
I was also in a customer facing position, I was working behind the tech bench at staples.
that was back when they actually had skilled people behind the bench

I actually had a co-worker who was hard of hearing, very nice guy, a bit pessimistic. Anyway, we were working one day and a very old lady was asking for help finding a food item (it's usually right behind them) and she basically had NO TEETH. Gums and all and she said something like (car-ats), and she had to repeat to both me and my co-worker 10 times before I said "Oh, carrots? Right over here!" and by that time her husband already got some.......
After that, we went in the back room and looked at each other and went "What the heck was that?!?!" We had a good laugh and moved on with our day.
@RichardU Yeah, my implants are hidden behind my thick long hair so it's usually not apparent until I start talking... I have a deaf accent.
