A: Sandbox for Proposed Questions

apaulCalling people out for being bystanders I ran into a rather nasty one this past weekend. I was out with a close friend at a party and could very clearly hear people making exceptionally nasty homophobic and transphobic comments, up to and including threats of physical violence towards us. My fri...

Why does Sandman have a wolf/husky profile picture?

Looks like something Wad would have picked.

Haha @Tink chose it, you'll have to ask her

hmm... odd, but whatever.

Q: Should question 16793 have been closed?

JesseQuestion 16793 is an etiquette question asking about the common courtesy of how/when to stop conversation with someone in online dating. This question was closed as "primarily opinion based" and from the comments there are two reasons for this. The first of which I disagree with and that is tha...

1:35 AM
@apaul I've also doubled down on particularly poor choices after I've been called out too. Take for instance the backlash effect.

@sphennings Fair enough. That's why I asked in the sandbox first.

I'm glad to see it's getting used :).
I figured if we wanted to talk about how I've responded to people calling me out that's pretty unrelated to critiquing your question so it would be best to move that tangent to chat.

Really working hard on that SE mod tone, it shows ;)

It makes it easier to shut people down who are trying to make a mess of things.

Sorry... Still in a pretty rough mood about the whole thing.

user15026
1:43 AM
@Sandman I always worry about "how do I make bystanders do a thing" because...I can't help it but I think of times where I probably should have spoken up, but for various reasons (some obvious, some not) it would not have been safe for me to do so

I've edited the narrow the goal, but it still seems like an admonishment wouldn't be out of order in the slightest.

@apaul No worries. That sounds like a really miserable situation to be in. I'd be pretty livid if I was In your shoes.

user15026
So I understand wanting to do something to get people to act, but I also understand that you might not be able to easily identify that they're not acting because they're inherently complicit in acceptance, or because they can't for reasons that you might not know (and I might not be able to explain to you)

@Ash That sounds like it could be a part of an answer, and one that might fit in some situations, but I don't know if it really fits this situation.
I don't think they were inherently complicit. Just that it was kinda... Well "not awesome" to pretend that it didn't happen.

user15026
shrug just a random thought, more than anything

1:49 AM
Hi guys

user15026
I don't have an answer, I don't really know I want to have one (because I am tired of having to try to teach people how to be decent humans around queerness, lately, to be perfectly honest.)

Any pointers on how to get the question in better shape before it goes to main?
Or is this likely another one of those things I should quietly delete because people are more likely to be "not awesome" about it?

@apaul I'd put some thought into how you word it so that it's focusing on figuring out what to do in the future instead of using the site as a platform to vent your frustration. I think the core of question (How to talk to people about speaking up in the future?) is a good question for this site.

So, cut the context?

2:05 AM
@apaul Not completely. It's an important part of the question. It's the circumstance that you're approaching these people with.
You don't want to know how to talk to a random stranger you want to know how to talk to the people who didn't act last time.

So what is your suggestion exactly?

I'd drop the paragraph about wanting to unload on the bystanders, and the sentence after that.

@sphennings I was going to add your comment to the question but changed my mind. Think it suits best as a relevant comment for extra context since its not directly related to the question

It might be a good idea to do a rework of what remains. I see that you're writing from a place of pain and anger.

Why?

2:14 AM
I'd remove that text because it's a lot about how you feel and very little that helps people be able to answer your question.

Context matters

@apaul Context does matter. Remember that I'm just another user with my own rather vocal opinion. I encourage you to form your own opinion and disagree with me.

When I'm answering questions, being able to get a sense of where the OP is coming from emotionally is usually helpful. Empathy matters too.
Then again, maybe I'm just tired of being told to suppress. People have a right to be angry in some situations.

I guess it depends on exactly what you're asking. You could also ask "How can I express my feelings about my friends failure to act in a manner that doesn't cause them to double down on their behavior?"
@apaul I don't think you need help being vocal and angry at people. :p I'm trying to read between the lines to create a clearer more specific question.

@sphennings That could have been a part of a more complete and nuanced question, but we usually don't like those.

2:21 AM
If you want to ask a more nuanced question be my guest. You'll just need to make sure that the nuance is clear for the HNQ and FGITW crowds.

Thanks for the reminder that SE is pretty crap about these things, I'd almost forgotten in the few minutes since you last mentioned it in the comments section.
Actually, f it. I'm not likely to find an answer here, and people are very likely to act like s about it, so I'll just not bother.

Wait no
I liked the question as is
Perhaps it could use a little extra clarification of your goals because its quite intensely emotional. but i think that would clear up most of what the comments were talking about
I even think it would be very well received
by the majority at least.. can't talk for everyone

user15026
2:41 AM
@apaul I am not sure why you're so stuck on this - like you ask us for help, we offer help, and then you keep getting mad we're helping

3:44 AM
@Ash Was I mad about the helping or perhaps already mad and perhaps that was exacerbated by the way the site operates and it's not so subtle layer of condescension and pedantry? I deleted it because Sphennings made clear what I could expect on main, and I'm not in the mood for it.
@JalapenoNachos Funny how you tend to drop in like that...

@apaul I'm bummed you deleted, I'd already started drafting an answer in my head

Ya... It's a hard life for us all.

I think the biggest part of the reception sphennings is talking about would be from the tone that you've written with. It's the age old rule of the internet that somebody who's clearly upset will attract trolls like moths to a flame. I like the question and I think that if you sleep on it and try to write it a little more dispassionately it would avoid a lot of the HNQ flak
If you decide not to post it but still want to talk, feel free to ping me :)

user15026
4:22 AM
@apaul the fact that you constantly assume that there will be condescending stuff and pedantic stuff so you come in angry right out of the gate doesn't help. It feels like you more want to prove that we are as awful as you think, sometimes.

user15026
This site is far from perfect, that's for certain sure. But I think you had a good question in there, I think though you need to learn to step back from the defensive feeling anger - we aren't you, we only have what's in the questions to go by, and most of us do honestly want to help.

user15026
I get being angry at this stuff, but I think you end up putting a lot of your anger at the situations into anger at the site, and that's not really helpful long term.

@scohe001 Actually, I didn't. Some mystery guest did

user15026
I know you don't like some of the ways IPS has decided to do things, but your constant put downs of SE as a whole and the people here who participate within it's guidelines/constraints is...really unappreciated, to be honest.

user15026
@Tinkeringbell curiouser and curiouser!

4:32 AM
@Ash There's a difference between "assume that there will be" and "seeing that there is" Granted I was already pissed off about something, but I've slept on it for two days and decided to ask about it. It's a pretty miserable thing that a site about interpersonal skills requires people to divorce their question from emotion, and reduce it down till it's digestible by people who couldn't answer it to begin with.

@apaul the Sandbox suggestions are far from being "requirements." They're suggestions at best and only from a very narrow portion of the community (for now!). You question was easily already up to snuff for main site as it was.
The situation you describe sucks. Hard. Is there anything we can do here in chat to help?
@Tinkeringbell color me intrigued. How did they get it to you?

IPS... If you want to help people, help people. If you don't realize that the tone of that help changes the way it's received, maybe you're not being as helpful as you would like to think.
When managing the site and it's users becomes more important than offering help, we're kinda losing the point of the thing.

@apaul Tone can be a little tricky when all I’m able to communicate with is a jumble of letters :)

@scohe001 More of a general statement about the nature of the site... But I think you knew that.

@apaul Ahh I didn’t acually. I thought you were referencing my latest messages. My bad.

Morning

@apaul IPS isn't supposed to be about help. It's about questions and answers about Interpersonal Skills. With that attitude we shouldn't even be closing questions, and someone would pull the plug out of this very soon.
@Magisch good morning!

@Tinkeringbell Here's hoping.

Always lovely if you can answer a question in a way that genuinely helps through IPS. Nobody is saying you aren't allowed to help, just keep it on topic

@Tinkeringbell What is an answer if not "help"? Curating content should be slightly behind that goal... Otherwise you're just dusting grave stones.

@apaul keep in mind the difference between helping the question asker and helping the general user of the site. When things contradict I think taking a greater good approach isn't too bad.

5:09 AM
@Jesse Ya, I usually take the greater good approach. But I usually place that goal way ahead of the goals of SE.

I'm having some weird sort of deja-vu. I believe we've already been over this... And I'm not going to waste more energy on it.

user15026
@apaul I really don't understand what you are trying to do, if you keep railing against how SE works

user15026
You seem to want to push against the fundamental ideas of how SE does what it does, and while that does work up to a point...its not tenable for the site

user15026
I am just trying to figure out what your end goal here is

@Ash Just suggesting that maybe this ultra orthodox belief in the unyielding SE model does more harm than good in some instances. Maybe we're placing more value on the survival of Stack Exchange, than on the Qs and As that actually makes the thing worth doing. Curating has its place, but it shouldn't be the primary goal.
If we have to curate posts to the point that the questions and answers are hollow, what's the point? Who is the site serving?

user15026
5:37 AM
The fact that IPS exists is kinda proof that it's not as unyielding as you claim.

People really need to stop commenting on question #16441.

@Mithrandir That question is controversial and interesting to a lot of people. What do you expect?

@Magisch People to pay at least a little attention to the comments left before about not commenting.

@Mithrandir These are mostly HNQ visitors

6:43 AM
That question has been HNQ for waaay too long
It's not even a great question for IPS standards, not a signpost for the site :(

The vote counts on the answers are off the charts to
116, 251, 423(!), 205....

There have been roughly 220 comments on the question and its answers.

89 deleted on the question :/
Luckily it's almost out of HNQ

I mean it's not the askers fault but this question's answers of what is essentially varying degrees of "you're having an emotional affair, stop it"

@Magisch Isn't it? I've been wondering... to me it sounded a lot like 'I need arguments to convince my wife'... I don't see many arguments in the question

6:49 AM
What OP asked is How can I convince her that the relationship is platonic without changing the nature of the friendship?
The answers are all pretty much "You can't, stop that friendship as it is" with one or two suggesting actual outs

@Magisch Yeah. Usually we then ask 'what've you tried already'. I don't see that in the question

It bothers me that the most popular questions here seem to be the ones where you can channel righteous outrage into a frame challenge.

True. So we either ban frame-challenges, go harder on the back up
or require better questions
or or or
I don't really know how to fix it

Q: How to fight with stranger for my own benifit when I do't have any backgroud support

NitishThere is spare space on the road side, basically anybody can use that for car parking. I was using this space since 2 months. But now my neighbour wants to speak on this and asking to get out from there. He wants to park his vehicle there. Please suggest how to deal with it ?

I see dead posts.
:)

how can a post be dead tho?

@Tinkeringbell me either, I'm drawing a blank
But we got a CM who knows intimately about this site now, so finger's crossed

7:39 AM
@Magisch I don't think CM's hammer beta sites into shape :P If we want this to succeed, it's up to us :/

Yeah but at least we have someone who knows we're trying now
and also might offer more situation specfic pointers, having been on the site for a long time

@Magisch The rest knows too ;)

Yeah I know what you mean. Still I think it's an advantage for IPS

Not a full answer, but remember they can not force you to have kids. I told my parents, they laugh me off, and I proceeded with my life as usual. I think it's perfectly acceptable to just ask them to buy you some of your favourite beverage or, if the work is a bigger piece of work, maybe they can offer a meal (either home cooked or takeout, whatever you might feel they'd be more comfortable with). It sounds like they would be grateful to get their problem fixed without feeling like they're taking advantage. — delinear 8 secs ago

@Cashbee Why is your pseudo in italics? Are you a chat mod?

cashbee is a room owner in this room

Thanks for this info @Magisch :) didn't know there were room owners

They can kick and move messages and put the room in timeout
The people with blue names are moderators on some SE site (they automatically get their permissions in all of chat.SE)

I knew about the mods, but I didn't about the owners. I saw Cashbee had put messages in trash which made me notice the pseudonymn attribute :)

@Magisch I'd love to see you try and kick a message :P

12:13 PM
you knew exactly how I meant that

I'd love to see them yell at the room for misbehaving before putting the room in timeout as well :)

Mods can't be stopped from chatting, IIRC :P

@Tinkeringbell That seems unfair :p

I think shog did some science with that

Can I flag one of your messages as spam tink so we can test it? :p
I want to feel empowered for once ^^,

12:18 PM
@Imus It's been tested. The message will be deleted and Tink will escape unscathed.
However, I could suspend Tink ;)

@Mithrandir That's mutual though!

sounds like a race

@Imus Don't you talk about empowerment, now you have enough rep to DV and not lose your moderation priviledges :p

@Imus Don't ;) Every 10k-er on the network will see it, and flock to this room

I think mods can lift their own suspensions though?

12:19 PM
@Tinkeringbell Well... it requires a little fiddling, you can't just press the button like for normal users

@Tinkeringbell Sounds like a good moment to get to make new important friends :p

@Mithrandir I'll figure it out :P But I think it has to do with chat parents?

Yeah, exactly - change the parent, suspend, hope they don't change it back

and don't worry, I would never flag anything except if it should be flagged

@Imus Hahaha I wasn't too worried you'd actually do it ;)

@Imus 'was kiddin :)

12:24 PM
@avazula Yep. I'm now charged again, yet my concentration seems much worse than yesterday
I think I only ever flagged twice... both a custom mod flag and Mith declined the first ;)

@Tinkeringbell You plugged it into your laptop right? If not, that would explain why you have trouble concentrating ;)

@Tinkeringbell how many hours do you work a day? seems like you have pretty heavy dyas

@avazula 8. I just spend a lot of time outside of work behind a screen too ;)
@Imus Oh? Is that where the charger is supposed to go ;)

@Tinkeringbell I can't remain online once I leave the office. I feel like it's too much of screen time a day, I just can't switch my pc on once at home.

depends on your end goal XD if you want your laptop to keep working yes, if you want some more excitement in your life there are other places you can put it instead ^^,

12:28 PM
Yet I'm gonna have to, a friend of mine asked me to design a website for them, and I'm brand new to front-end frills

@avazula I mostly live behind my laptop ... get home from work, turn laptop on till my SO calls me to prepare dinner. Make dinner, eat dinner behind laptop till it's bedtime XD
@avazula Did you give him a disclaimer that it'll never look as good as an actual designer doing that instead?
if you are not really a designer it never works out the same ...

I know. But it's for a charity, thence their lack of budget :)

In that case good luck ^^, Should turn out good enough for their purpose

@avazula are you using any framework / cms ? if yes, there are usually templates to use

I'm actually quite skilled in communications and design (I used to spend a lot of time on Photoshop and Illustrator), I'm just lacking the web developper skills (for now... I actually see it as a chance to discover a new field!)
@Cashbee They want me to use Bootstrap but since they won't have any community manager/webmaster to fill the news section once I'm done and that they don't know a thing about programming, I'm trying to convince them to consider using Wordpress
In this case it won't be very complicated to build a nice and easy site using WP.

12:34 PM
@avazula I usually go home, eat, chat a little with my parents/brothers, and then go to the pc again ;)
Watch Netflix... most of my crochet patterns are online or downloaded

@avazula but why use WP if they don't have/update news? a cms like WP is unnecessary if there is noone managing it. Or are you going to keep their site up to date?

@Cashbee I'm not. But they want to post new articles and updates on a regular basis. Isn't WP a good fit for this purpose?

ok then yes
so they do have someone who posts new articles?

@Cashbee Yes, but it's someone who doesn't know a thing about IT, blog posts is what looks closest to their programming knowledge...
So let's say they know peanuts about programming
(This is not an insult of course)

making a WP template yourself can be quite a pain, especially if you never used WP programmatically before. There are tons of preexisting templates though, you just have to find one that matches that organization. You can then adapt that template, change some CSS to further adapt it to your liking.
yes to manage the content you don't have to code anything. They still need to be schooled how to use it though

hello o/

Hi there!

How is it going around here :D

hi, welcome back :)

@Cashbee I still think it's gonna be easier than using a Bootstrap site (don't you think?). Looks like I'm gonna teach stuff to my friend :)

I'm great, thx :) you?

pretty well, thank you

I've got an event starting soon in one of my chat rooms, anyone care to join.
I'll give an invite if you want

@Cashbee Well, I looked up a little, seems there's BS templates ready-to-use

12:47 PM
You definitely got to have a cms, if the content manager is not a coder. A cms usually has some admin dashboard where they can manage the content without coding.

@Cashbee awh, at least you got to do something fun
straight to integrating and expanding ERP systems for me

12:57 PM
@Magisch :'(

@Magisch Meh... the last one was kinda over-scheduled and flopped

@Magisch I just did, it wasn't on the todo list in school

:) I had better sleep last night- i tried valerian root and melatonin together... knocked me right out. my fitbit tracks how much I move at night - how "restless" i am, and there is a big difference between last night and the night before. the night before had nothing, then last night had melatonin and valerian root. cool stuff.

The event will start at 4

12:58 PM
@TheMaskedRebel I don't think there's many game-developers here ;) but good luck!

my husband is a game developer of sorts...

if you want to come and I'm not there ping @FreezePhoenix or @Hakase

@ElizB Will you repeat the experience?

@TheMaskedRebel for me aswell, I'd love to join but I'll be at work

12:59 PM
@TheMaskedRebel Don't hesitate to ping us anytime though :)

@TheMaskedRebel On an international site/chat as this one it's useful if you either put the time zone in as well, or say "X hours from now" :)

@Imus TMR is in UK so GMT I guess

I think it's really cool that my hubby was one of the people involved in this: codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/11880/…
he loves coming up with games and inventing new ways to play. sometimes the ideas are so bizarre but it works :)

@ElizB Is he El'endia Starman, isn't he?

@avazula yup
i know i mentioned it earlier

1:03 PM
Ha
My heart smiles when I see RAM schemes

i remember when he was working on it, i was really shocked at the magnitude of it

@ElizB Is he an embedded systems engineer?

@avazula ... i'm not sure. (shrugs)
i'm not the programmer, hehe

@ElizB I love looking at codegolfing questions and think of how I would solve that. But actually answering is another pair of shoes, with all these codegolfing languages around. I want to do some with my friends once, so noone will find those ridiculous 20byte results. Just average everyday-code that we usually write

@Cashbee Yeah, I agree. He loves programming for fun. He works on Project Euler problems in some of his free time when he feels like it
@avazula I didn't see this until now- Hmm, I think I will take a lower dose of the Valerian Root with the melatonin tonight and that will probably help me.

1:16 PM
@Cashbee how should we deal with this comment? It's needed IMO but it's also chatty. What does the bot actually do? Will it delete the comment if we flag it as tp?
@ElizB Are you facing some stress right now that you need those to sleep?

@avazula he won't do anything. our "fp" feedback is only for statistics purposes i think.

My bad, I focused only on the length.

15 messages moved to Trash

what is type "wrongo"?

bot will start singing "wrongo bongo here I jongo"
4
jk, i have no idea if it differs from fp

1:20 PM
@avazula I am not really facing a lot of stress, but my mind is busy- I have ADD. So, bedtime is postponed further and further unless I am sleepy and want to go to bed

@Cashbee air was leaving my nostrils in an unusual high velocity

@ElizB Erf... know what you're dealing with, I have hyperactivity issues. I need to exhaust myself at sport at least once a day (preferably before going to work) or I'm not able to just go through my work day.

@avazula I am fine before work, I use the energy
it's really more about the distraction rather than the hyperactivity. I am not as hyperactive
I rock climb or do exercises from Tae Bo.

And it helps you focus?

@avazula Yeah, helps me sleep better so I can have a better day the next day.
Sleep is the primary determinant of how my next day goes
Rock climbing takes a lot of focus and a bit of an adrenaline boost :D hehe

1:28 PM
I admire you. I was scared everytime I climbed haha

@avazula That scared makes you climb to the top all the faster and makes you hold on :P (at least for me)
(puzzled look) someone said they can't improve on an answer, when they said "this is not really an answer".... (tilts head) I don't know whether to get offended or to flag it and let it go...

@ElizB Let it go. Chances are that they don't want to try to improve their answer.
You'd get hurt before they change their mind

I have gone bouldering several times now and I love it. Once we went to an actual climbing route (intermediate level, so definitely doable for me) but as soon as I reached 20 meters altitude I turned back. I am not afraid of heights, but the safety line had really long sections, so when you fell, you first fell 2-3 Meters, where you would get 'saved' by the line - but in reality you would crush your torso from that fall and then crash against the Rock. I wasn't very fond of that prospect..

@avazula Yeah, no response there. I know better than to engage with that kind of stuff.
@avazula I know from experience with my dad.... (cringes in remembering stuff he tried to instigate but I warded off)

lets follow his own advice and flag it as not an answer

1:42 PM
@Cashbee That's really cool! .... That sounds painful, yeah. I don't relish the idea of crushing my torso or crashing against the rock
@Cashbee That's what I was thinking. the two answers above it are excellent.

@Cashbee Where is it? I want to do justice stuff too

No, I can't. Sorry. You can remove the answer if you want. I guess that the OP had time to read my comment. — Steven Mathey 8 mins ago

May 9 at 11:11, by doppelgreener
fr: change the false positive feedback response to WRONGO
then it got added as an alias for fp :P

@ElizB DVed, their answer is now deletable. Notice to all high-rep users

@avazula yeah, i just flagged it. I don't think it's a horrible answer but if he just improved on it and backed it up, then it would be fine.
it's his comment that made me step back

1:51 PM
@doppelgreener so it's not what you suggested is it?

@Eliz urgh, smugness. I hate it.

@avazula Yeah, I noted that right away- instigator-type statements always make my guard go up. my dad does that

@ElizB You seem to have a complicated relationship with your dad. I saw your recent question, did have anything to answer, can't do nothing but offer you my support. My foster dad was a very complicated person too.

i'm editing the tag wiki for narcissism- it's rather short. should I add in an example of someone with narcissism, maybe one or two questions from IPS? or should I leave it?
@avazula yuuuup. pretty complicated. Thank you for your kind consideration, I know that some folks just simply don't know. Some questions are the same for me, like break-up questions... I don't know how to deal because I only went through one.

@ElizB I'd suggest you leave it as it is. I'm not really comfortable with this tag since it's a psychiatric condition and we're not doctors. One good thing could be to ask anongoodnurse, she raised the matter in meta and is a doctor herself. She could describe the tag better than we all could do, I think. Unless you have medical knowledge from your studies? I forgot you are in healthcare :)

1:59 PM
I specifically said this: The definition of narcissist people and people with narcissist personality disorder is as follows:

> The symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder include: grandiose sense of importance, preoccupation with unlimited success, belief that one is special and unique, exploitative of others, lack of empathy, arrogance, and jealousy of others. - [Psych Central](https://psychcentral.com/disorders/narcissistic-personality-disorder/)

The tag should be used when conflicts come up between people who may have these tendencies. Narcissism is in a range, from mild gaslight

@ElizB Even with the biggest empathy, one couldn't fit perfectly in someone else's shoes if they didn't experienced it themselved.
