2:00 PM
ah nice!
you ever been to Cuban Pete's?
mmmm ... skirt steak ...
:)

the second best thing to Taylor Ham is Rutt's hut in Rutherford.
er, no.... not Rutherford. Clifton

I see ...
@RichardU montclair ... such a wealthy town ...

@D.Hutchinson yeah, more money than brains.

it's amazing how a simple 5 / 10 minute drive out of West Orange gets you into such a different, wealthy area

Sid
@Tinkeringbell ah okay. Thanks

2:01 PM
I see ...
(my friends live in West Orange ... )

@Sid If you need anything trashed, just shout ;) But I hope you were just being curious :)

but we eat dinner at montclair places :)

@D.Hutchinson don't go into East Orange though. at least not without kevlar

hahah why ?
is it ghetto?
I'm a New Yorker -- when I'm in Jersey, I just follow ...

@D.Hutchinson it's overrun by the Bloods, and a particularly violent branch of that gang

2:03 PM
I have zero sense of how the towns change ...
ahh ... geez ...

tbh getting shot still isn't great, even with kevlar

And I picked up a new helmet at the same time. i.stack.imgur.com/cT62b.jpg

@Mithrandir Nice colors! ( and the rest of the bike too of course!) :P

@Mithrandir that looks awesome

@Mithrandir You can use that as next years winterbash hat XD

Sid
2:05 PM
@Mithrandir that looks very nice.

:D
Thanks.

Can I get some flags here? interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/2776/… the Zwarte Piet thing can definitely be considered rude

@Tinkeringbell That is not just a little rude
that is blatantly abusive
In line with their recent edit summaries

It was gone before I could click the flag button
Good job community!

@Magisch Guess I'm used to more violence when it comes to that discussion then, but that would be called rude, not abuse, here ;)

2:09 PM
And yeah, I agree with Magisch, that was one of the more blatant examples I've seen

We need a mod/cm to step into that tbh

@Magisch Yeah.. on second thought, maybe a mod flag would have been more correct... ah well, you can always flag the post and say 'see the deleted comment' :)
I can't because I already flagged my post for comment clean-up, they seem to have involved into a history of the US because of a mistake I made yesterday in the original revision ;-)

@Tinkeringbell I already modflagged their latest edit

Time to wait until someone wakes up then, I guess

I know the mods don't like locking posts, but I think that one could benefit from a small timeout

2:13 PM
@Tinkeringbell Did custom flag that
Hopefully a mod will step in soon and put a stop to this chain of events to that tempers can cool

You know, once you start talking about mods, one is bound to pop up.. :) Hello @Catija! :)

chances are cat just woke up so give some time :p

I'd love to know the topics needed to summon HDE or John though.. Catija is always the one popping up when we talk moderators XD
@Magisch At 4 PM? :P Nah, or she slept in :P

< not familiar with american timezones

Mar 23 at 11:54, by Catija
@Tinkeringbell what??? It's the normal time. It's nearly 7.

2:16 PM
I think Catija is just generally around more. Also for reference. It is currently a quarter after 10 am on the US East coast. 9 in Cat's timezone

Apparently around 12 is normal time XD

@Magisch right now it's 10:16AM on the east coast,
9:16 central
8:16 mountain
7:161 on the west coast

Y'know I still think we could use more mods but I respect the mod team's decision not to ask for more so I won't keep harping on it

@Magisch yeah, but they cannot at the same time say "no more mods" and "We are overwhelmed"

@Magisch I don't think we need more mods, just a wider timezone coverage for them. all 3 are Americans. I think we could use one in Europe or the Middle East

2:22 PM
@Magisch given some people's unpredictable, erratic behavior that seems to go beyond just words -- e.g., intense ideologies to "step up and fight" -- I am sufficiently frightened for this site to add a new mod, actually ...
I would feel physically unsafe ...
the CMs would have to be extraordinarily careful in choosing ...

@RichardU What kind of time measurement is that XD it's about as logical as using a non-metric system :P 7.161 :P

I have faith in the CMs to choose wisely
They like drama even less then either of us do

true ...

They did a damn good job choosing the current mods, for one

agreed ...

2:23 PM
Moderating this site is hard work and not nearly as easy or straightforward as it sounds
4

@Magisch a suggestion I made earlier would have stopped most of this nonsense. When you have a site that's got problems, you need to crack down until everyone behaves, then loosen up
right now, far too many rude and abusive answers and comments stand, and questions that have nothing to do with IPS go to HNQ because they are not killed quickly

@Magisch This is, I think, one of the most difficult sites to moderate on the network, and I don't even have experience with a diamond on IPS. Just from what I can do as a normal user on the main site and sometimes moderating this room is exhausting enough.

@Mithrandir agreed

Once a site with problems hits HNQ, it attracts the 101s who are curious, but not necessarily interested in maintining the integrity of the site.

This is rocket science compared to SO where you can do everything by the numbers without any issue (comparably)

2:28 PM
Not... exactly.

And this is coming from the guy using heuristics to track down serial voters

@Magisch TWP has a good handle on things.
@Magisch I vote for Cap'n Crunch!
but enough humor.

@RichardU Yeah, it scared away the mod

The problem in here is that standards are not consistently enforced. What happens is lots of chaos, mods get mad, crack down for a short while, people complain about the enforcement, mods go away, chaos ensues, lather, rinse repeat
inconsistent standards are worse than no standards at all

@RichardU I think some of that is because a lot of people here have different standards...
We need more standards before we can be consistent.

2:33 PM
@Tinkeringbell ... which makes them inconsistent :)

@Magisch we do require that answers at least explain why they say what they do, even if no official back it up rule

@Cashbee Not exactly what I was aiming for... inconsistent to me is one person acting differently each time... not 'standard' is different people acting differently

Sid
Um.. I have a question which is perhaps not a good fit for the site. So, I will ask here. We (by we, I mean me and the people part of the club that I am in) have been accused to be elitist and braggards (none of which is true btw). The thing is that this idea of our club has been passed down from the seniors to the freshers and hence, we don't see a lot of participation in our activities. What can we do to shed this image?

@Tinkeringbell I think the first step is to remove the asterisk people are putting next to the "Be nice" policy
@Sid ask Epicurus. :/

@RichardU We're working our asses of to that regard, flags, chat, meta... but you can't reach the people that are never in chat or meta... except with moderator messages. I do think those are being sent a lot
And even the ones that are sometimes require a suspension in the hopes they learn.

2:36 PM
@Tinkeringbell also I'm usually willing to superping if it's for a good reason

@Tinkeringbell TWP has suspended people for a year for less than what I've seen here.

@Sid do outsiders accuse you of that, or is it the seniors within the club? or both?

And, since Sid brought up perceptions and reputation....

Sid
@Cashbee outsiders. Not those within the club

@RichardU I'd personally love to see stricter moderating here, but we can't depend on the moderators to do that. I think that's why the suspension reason list as one of the reasons that people seem to not be learning from the community, and their activity comes with a string of moderator flags

2:38 PM
@Sid then you need to actively go out and meet/welcome people. Let the reality belie the reputation.

yup. show that you aren't elitist. Saying so doesn't help.

Sid
@RichardU we try. But, people are very unwilling to join/contribute in any way (even by participation).
For instance, if there's some competition that we organize, people are like, "we know we won't win. So,why waste time going." We have even tried to convince people that it will help them a lot in speaking skills but it still doesn't mAke much of a difference.

@Mithrandir what's a superping?

@D.Hutchinson mod only feature to notify folks who aren't pingable in chat / send a chat message directly to your global inbox

@Sid yeah, you need outreach then. Your people need to go to other people's stuff and engage them, talk to them, connect with them on a basic human level.
And, ask people for help.

2:45 PM
@Sid participation prizes?

Nobody thinks of you as elitist when you're asking them for help

@D.Hutchinson For instance, I could be superpinged with a @@133031 or @@58@literature.stackexchange.com

@Cashbee participation prizes are one sure way to be seen as elitist.

Sid
@Cashbee we don't have enough funds to guarantee participation money. :P

(Also, yes, I've memorized my chat ID. I spend too much time here.)

2:47 PM
@RichardU ok i think i did not really understand what an elitist is. ups :)
@@133031 whazzuupp

Doesn't work for you ;)

@Cashbee it means that you think that you're better than others, synonymous with "snob"

noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
@RichardU thank you. because google said it's "a person who believes that a society or system should be led by an elite."

@Cashbee urban dictionary has the right definition in this case ;)

That's a first

2:51 PM
I always check the urban dictionary too... You never know, there might be a reason to be offended! :p

@Mithrandir ah, I see ...

Sid
To be fair,we sort of know that we are considered elitists because of the way we communicate. For instance, our language of communication is English which Is kinda overwhelming for some people considering English Is like a third language to most of us. We prefer English because it is understood by everyone irrespective of where they come from. However, people feel it is our way of showing off and that's what leads to the perceptions

@Sid calling that elitist is either very ridiculous or I still don't understand what elitists are :)

actually I just translated that and it was spam

3:03 PM
if you were communicating in latin, because you can, now that would be elitist in my eyes
@EmC did you go to the mentioned website too? I'm afraid of going there :D

@Cashbee nope, just tossed it into google translate :P
I'm not that brave either, haha

@RichardU how did TWP deal with that 50-cheeseburgers question? I remember seeing that sorta recently -- was hilarious ...

Sid
@Cashbee well... English isn't quite Latin

@D.Hutchinson I haven't been too active lately. Health/family/personal issues have kept me busy... and surly
@D.Hutchinson but the quickest I've seen is a post closed and deleted in under 10 minutes

ah, I see ...

3:12 PM
but by the same token, we are good at editing. I was able to de-rantify a post and turn it around from a -7 to a +52
but we have fewer edit wars.
there was that time we had one idiot editing out every "he" or "she" and replacing it with "they". We put an end to that too.

@RichardU I take that as they did it in posts where gender was known too?

@Tinkeringbell yes, they did, but regardless, it's bad form. We had a small war in Meta over that one.
The ones in favor of that rage-quit when we said no. Problem solved.

sidequestion: Using 'they' when the gender is known can be offensive, correct?

I've definitely edited posts just to change the pronouns but only where it was explicitly against the person being mentioned's preference.
@Cashbee Why?

@Cashbee That's a complicated subject that's really dependent upon the people involved.

3:21 PM
I don't know, I am asking. We don't have this in my language

@Mithrandir I can see doing that because it doesn't detract from any meaning of the post and removes a source of stress for OP
A no-lose policy, so to speak

@Cashbee to some, you're mere breathing is offensive.

@RichardU *your

@sphennings thats why i said can be offensive. But that answers my question thanks

@Magisch no, you are

3:22 PM
@RichardU yea I know, I'm working on that

o_O

:)

in other words, if you are breathing, that alone is enough to offend soeone

I know people who are fine with either he or she but not they. To them, they used to clock people as gender non conforming and is calling them an other.

@Magisch Magisch is correcting people's grammar. Penguins are sunbathing in the Sahara.
:D

3:23 PM
@Mithrandir I'm evolving

@RichardU are you a sports fan at all? Jeff Hornacek was fired :(

There are some out there who are desperately seeking to be offended, to them, I provide a valuable service.

@Magisch better than other things you could be doing.

@D.Hutchinson I was born with damage to the neural center of my brain that controls motor function. I am functional, but have all the grace of a gazelle with spastic disorder, and thus have never been one for sports.

@Mithrandir like rolling down a hill as the round smiley I am
revolving, so to speak

3:24 PM
@RichardU Please don't.

@RichardU ah, I see ...

@sphennings too late. I've already filled several quotas today
But that does bring me to another point. Richard's Rule #29. People will meet the standards you set for them.
In other words, if you hang a name on someone, they'll play that role.

I will concede that never offending anyone is impossible, going out of your way to offend people, or identifying as the offensive one isn't very nice.

Deliberately offending someone, no matter how much you may feel they deserve it, is not a thing that has a place on Stack Exchange.
4

3:29 PM
I have a strict policy of not following TVtropes links.

@Mithrandir oh, I never said I do it deliberately, just that I do it.
simply because people WANT to be offended

Are you sure people want to be offended?

> Those who speak of brutal honesty are more concerned with the brutality than the honesty.

@sphennings some do, certainly.

3:30 PM
@Mithrandir then there are those of us who simply don't have time to walk on eggshells
Point being, if you look to be offended, you will be.
and if you slap someone with a label, they will wear it proudly.

@RichardU There's a space between walking on eggshells and being actively offensive.

@RichardU If you don't have the time to say something nicely, leave it to someone who does.

@Mithrandir that's very offensive to someone who is autistic and very literal
So, if my literalism gets in the way, and I am unintentionally rude, I should tear my hear and rend my clothes?

There is a very broad space for accidentally offending people to different degrees and the current discourse on the internet, does not have a good way of navigating that liminal space.

I think this conversation is turning very ablist

3:33 PM
Unintentionally rude is not the same as fulfilling the wishes of those who want to be offended.

@Mithrandir it certainly is.
by merely existing

@RichardU Generally what I do when I accidentally offend someone. Is say something like "I'm sorry, I didn't realize that this thing I did would have that effect on you."

All I need to do to offend someone is to be suitable tired, or agitated, enough for the filters to come down.
@sphennings and do you see how that could be weaponized.

Oh yeah

How is being intentionally offensive the same as accidentally being offensive?

3:34 PM
@RichardU you should at the very least do what you can to get along, and while that does not mean you are obligated to walk on eggshells, it doesn't mean you get to routinely do things that obviously upset people and act like it's their problem, not yours.

@Mithrandir where did I ever say anything about being deliberately offensive?

@RichardU While you definitely get in arguments on this site I think your voice and contributions are important. I'm want you to stay and continue to be involved.

@Cascabel That's a pretty severe accusation you are leveling, don't you think?

user15026
Having a brain that works differently than average is not and should not be an automatic license to not try to be decent human being. It's not a get out of jail free card. Sure, you might not always intend it but you can learn from it.
4

Wow, looks like I'm on trial now.
Do I get a defense attorney?

3:38 PM
what's your defense

user15026
@RichardU I don't think she is accusing you of anything to be honest, just stating a fact

@RichardU IANAL but i will do that for you if you want

user15026
You aren't on trial, we are just responding to things you have said and offering ways that you can consider to potentially avoid unnecessary inflammation of issues

@Ash my point is that some people will be offended, seek to be, and will use it to silence people.

@RichardU If you're not doing that, then great! I was just responding to some things you'd said that implied it was important to keep in mind.

3:41 PM
My client wishes to refer to Richards Rule #51 which states that he has the right to change the subject if he wants to

@RichardU and some people will say that kind of thing as a justification for causing offense.

@RichardU So then what you should do as a Stack Exchange user is to make sure that they don't have anything that would be reasonable to be offended about.

@Cascabel care to name any names?

user15026
@RichardU entirely possible but you assuming those intentions and intentionally trying to provoke them isn't a good stance either

@Mithrandir define reasonable
@Ash who's intentions have I assumed?
tell me and I'll apologize

user15026
3:42 PM
The people who you claim want to be and seek to be offended

@Ash who have I claimed want to be offended?

user15026
It's not about just apologizing if called out on it, it's about avoiding those situations in the first place if at all possible

@Ash and are you saying that I'm not doing that?

user15026
@RichardU you claimed there are people in the general case who seek to be offended to silence people. I am responding to that statement.

3:44 PM
14 mins ago, by Richard U
simply because people WANT to be offended

@RichardU If you want think of it like playing blackjack, because of imperfect information the correct play given your information may not be the play that maximizes your return in a particular hand.

user15026
@RichardU nope. Not saying that at all. Please do not put words in my mouth.

@Ash so, you are saying that nobody deliberately seeks to be offended? I can think of at least one who has.
@Ash you have no problem putting words and intent in mine.

user15026
@RichardU I'm not saying that either. Basically, regardless if people seek that or not, you provoking them if you think that's what they're doing is a bad idea.

@Ash where have I said I provoke anyone?

user15026
3:45 PM
@RichardU I'm not at all. I'm saying that if, in a theoretical sense, this is what you would do, why it would not be a good choice.

user15026
(perhaps me using one instead of you as a pronoun might have clarified that, I am not sure)

@Ash I am very literal, and that is not something I can help

Richard, if this is all hypothetical "someone exists who's like this" then I don't think it's terribly relevant for how we should behave.

Anyway, my original point was an off the cuff joke. There are people who are easily offended and I always seem to find them and annoy them by doing little more than breathing.

@RichardU Perhaps you might be a contributing factor in that equation.

3:48 PM
@Cascabel if you are going to accuse someone of something, have proof, or it's just name calling.

user15026
@RichardU it might not be, but you have the capability to learn, yes? I get being hyper literal, I am bad for that myself, but even though I don't always inherently understand why I can't say x as a response to thing y, I have started making a mental list of times when saying thing x is not the right response regardless of my interpretation. It's not a perfect system and I still fail sometimes but it is a thing.

I don't think there is a simple fix. Telling you to not be offensive is a vague and non-constructive comment.
I'd like you to consider that perhaps there are things that you could learn to do differently rather than just dismiss it as someone else's problem.

@RichardU My statement was a direct response to a few things here, e.g. "I can think of at least one who has."
And that's the second time you've said I was accusing, all the while you've been making these claims about others, so... meh, yeah, doesn't seem like we're being that productive?
