Q: If I want a child to stop a behavior, should I talk directly to the child or to the parents?

KatConsider a case where a young child is doing something that directly impacts me, and most everyone would consider it reasonable to want them to stop. Here are a few real examples of things they've done in the past: * Pawing through my purse * Repeatedly and loudly talking in a theatre * Kicking t...

Q: Should I talk to my friend because got feeling to her?

LrawlsI'm working as a designer more than a year in a enterprise, In the first days, I met a girl in my area, we became friends in the next weeks, we shared some funny momments and we got some confidence, but also we stopped to talk for weeks despite of she has tried to talk me(After a time it was hea...

user15026
@ExtrovertedMainMan I strongly dislike that whole "if you don't date me we can't be friends" assumption that people seem to make a lot when they develop feelings for someone

@Ash Same.

user15026
Like...feelings happen! If I stopped being friends with everyone I had some sort of romantic inclination towards at some point or another, however brief...I'd not have a lot of friends left. (I'm one of those people who finds lots of reasons to love lots of people)

I think part of the problem is that most people go about telling someone that they have feelings the same way a cat leaves a dead animal at their owner's feet.

user15026
I BROUGHT YOU THIS THING YOU DID NOT WANT AND DID NOT ASK FOR AND IS KINDA HORRFYING. Loooooove me.

2:32 AM
"Guess what?! Here's a mess I made that you have to deal with! Don't you like it?"
I think that asking out friends is a pretty good "dating strategy" if you're not disrupting the friendship to make it happen.
"Do you want to go on a date?" should be framed and asked the same way as "Want to hang out after work on Thursday?"
A very low key ask where there's no repercussion for saying no.

user15026
Yeah, but it never goes that way, it seems

user15026
Someone always builds it up in their head and then you get demonized for saying no and it's all stupid

I've seen it work.
Both my relationships started as friendships.

user15026
That's how my husband and I started. Most of my good relationships started that way.

I think part of the problem is this idea that crushes are somehow special.

user15026

They get this weird sort of like...reverence that I have never quite understood

user15026
and people take them wayyyyyyy too seriously

There's a place for holding certain feelings in reverence, but it's not the feelings you have for a friend who you have a crush on.
Also shouldn't you have feelings for your friends?

I suspect the trouble comes from people waiting far too long, due to the fear of rejection... What starts as simple attraction builds into obsession before they bother to address it honestly. Byproduct of poor love mythos and low self esteem.
The mythologies about love that we grow up with are a huge contributing factor. For every romantic comedy there's probably a few dozen restraining orders...

Q: Accused of Racism at Work

StacyIn February last year I started a new job. I started the same day and in the same position as another person we'll call Ed. Our offices are across the hall from one another. I'm a white woman, he's a black male. We work in a large office that is Vietnamese owned. It's a melting pot, but most...

@Catija Not my circus, not my monkeys.

No clue. It's still very broad.

It's asking like... four different questions.

@Catija well it's got a close vote again now

4:10 AM
:D

I've added a comment explaining how it's still too broad.

It already had one of the best comments I've seen on the site so far.

Oh?

We certainly are a bit of a subjective site, @Stacy, but we do have to draw the line somewhere. We deal with a variety of interpersonal problems, but in the end, they should all be more like "How should I do [X]?" rather than "Should I do [X] (or Y)?". It doesn't really take interpersonal skills to make a judgement like this; it does take interpersonal skills to navigate a social encounter after picking a course of action. If you're able to edit this to the point where you're asking how to implement a specific course of action, then it would be a better fit for the site. — HDE 226868 ♦ yesterday

Yeah.

4:12 AM
@apaul That's a good summary of the nature of the site.
@apaul Want to cast a close vote too?
@Catija Can mods "vote" to close questions more than once?

@sphennings Yeah. Sure. But it looks really bad if we do it multiple times and the users keep reopening it.

@Catija That's a fair point.

Thought I vtc-ed that on round one, but I guess not.

Nope, I closed that one unilaterally.

There are still optics to consider to adding your vote to three other users. But it's better optics than re-closing it on your own.

4:20 AM
@Catija Could always do it again... ;)

It particularly looks bad when I came in here looking for votes...
:P
@apaul I could. And I'd be well able to explain the reasoning... but... it takes a village?

Since when do I care about looking bad lol

No, it looks bad for me :P

@Catija Should probably care less, it's incredibly freeing.

Have you seen me in here much recently?

4:23 AM
@Catija I was thinking the same thing before you posted.

Nope. Shog seemed to say that you were taking a needed break.

I've been feeling like shit the last couple of weeks and handling flags is about all I can manage, when I manage that.

Sick or sick and tired? Both? Probably both.

Lots of tired... going to bed much earlier than usual... sometimes as early as 9:30... stomach's been in knots for weeks... constantly. Not nausea... just funky.
You know the bubbles going up the sides of a glass of Guinness? My stomach feels like that... most of the time.

@Catija Lots of sympathy. It's not like modding this site has been easy to do this past week.

4:28 AM
Thanks. :) Hopefully it will pass.

Been to a doc, or just riding it out?

I haven't yet.
Sometimes I get iron deficiencies... which can explain the tiredness... sometimes.

@sphennings - any guidance or editing or restructuring you have for me would be very welcome. I agonize so much over those emails I don't think I can stomach agonizing over the text of the question about that problem.

Honestly a lot of what you need to do to write a good question and write a good email is going to be exactly the same.
In your words, what is the one sentence summary of your question?

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Manually reported question: How to know if your partner is cheating on you? by Jessica A Politron on interpersonal.SE (@Tinkeringbell)

Ok, this is a weird on. My close vote queue has a question from Oct that's been answered, and even bountied. Is it normal to review such questions for closing a season or two after the fact?

@GypsySpellweaver What's the question?

5:05 AM
Looks to me like it's about an intrapersonal skill not an interpersonal skill.
I'd vote to close it.
The general stack exchange wide policy is to close questions that would be closed if the current rules were applied to them.
37
A: Should I vote to close old questions?

hims056View all question with today's standards. If the question fits as per current standards then leave it open; if it doesn't fit then vote/flag to close it. If we keep the questions which don't fit as per current standards, then people will ask why the questions are still open.

It's flagged as too broad. Relative to that, it seems narrow enough. Off topic? probably. I was just more curious about the delay. Four-and-half months later it gets a review?
@sphennings Sensable

All it takes is a new flag or vote for it to be re-entered into the queue again.

Are we using "too broad" for questions that need and don't have cultural context? Cases where social standards vary widely and know the OP's is important?
Seems the proper choice, but not sure.

@GypsySpellweaver Close it.

Already did that one. Different review for the cultural context issue.

5:15 AM
@apaul Respect, for approving the closing of your old question.

This Q does need to provide a context. Commenter have asked for it, but it's not there yet.

@GypsySpellweaver Then close it.

It seemed worthwhile at the time, but it's pretty broad. Part of the reason that it's easier to ask about interpersonal problems, rather than interpersonal skills.

Yes. but as what "too broad"

@apaul Learning to choose your battles is a very important life lesson.

@sphennings It absolutely is, but these things make for rough se questions.

@apaul 6. So one human is consulted
I kinda like the idea... But I probably haven't been around long enough to understand the downsides ( if there are any)

I think the downside is if there are any false positives, leading to the deletion of legit posts.

@Tinkeringbell Hmm... That thinking could be applied to other things :P

Having at least one human involved should catch most of them unless the human is just rubberstamping the voting process.

@sphennings Pretty much, but Journeyman had a few other good points in his answer.

@apaul I stand behind my meta post. Yes it has downsides and I think I know them, but in the end the site will be better for it.

@Tinkeringbell It's certainly a very contentious post.

Morning all!

@sphennings yeah, I didn't expect everyone to be so very divided on it, everytime it's brought up in chat people go 'yeah, we might need to do something' ... Well, it probably means people that aren't in chat are at least on meta :)

A J
As it turns out, chatting in three rooms is not an easy thing. :/

@AJ o_O only three? Some users have dozens.

A J
@GypsySpellweaver But they don't chat in all of them.

I haven't looked at that part
Not sure how many I've used at once. but it's a small number

There's also less discussion going on in the comments. I think after what happened earlier in the week, those of us who care about the future of the site are more cautious about commenting so as to not stir the pot.

@sphennings Well, I already was sticking to the guidelines... :p

There's nothing wrong with using the comments on meta to discuss an answer. It's when they turn into an argument that it becomes a problem.
I would be quite interested in hearing why I have an answer with a score of +4/-3

6:36 AM
Oh, thought you were talking about main. Yeah, the meta post could definitely use more discussion
@sphennings you have haters? Anything there that can be disagreed upon?

I suspect that people don't like it when I call them out on their poor behavior.

heh, most people don't tend to

@sphennings who does? ;)
Just stick with it.

@ArtOfCode I do. If I'm missing something. I'd like to know so I can make amends and adjust my behavior in the future.

@sphennings Just don't go asking strangers which part of your body language was off.. apparently it's seen as passive aggressive

6:41 AM
They could also disagree with the policies that I have proposed, in which case I'd like to hear what they disagree with and why, so I can know what their concerns are so I can try to address them.

@sphennings That would go dangerously close to inviting 'X is wrong' in the comments again

@Tinkeringbell On meta "I disagree with this because x" is an acceptable comment.

@sphennings Ohhh... I keep forgetting this is about meta :)
Somehow I keep going back to main XD

Q: How the questions must be asked in a survey to get genuine replies?

Reeshabh RanjanShould the questions be direct or indirect? For example, if I ask: Do you try to change yourself if people spot flaw in you? I may not get genuine replies as people often answer which is morally correct. Or if I ask: In case you get bad grades and your parents find out what goes wrong, do yo...

@ExtrovertedMainMan I don't think that questions about research methods are on topic.
@Tinkeringbell That's one of the reasons why I specifically mentioned the main site in my "rude" answer.

6:48 AM
@sphennings Hmmm.. I like both answers, but then again they're agreeing with me that there is a problem, so ... I'm biased.

I think they're the only answers that are proposing solutions.

I don't think you should worry too much about rude, it isn't. You know where those remarks come from, up to you to take them serious or not.
@sphennings which is good, but my main point for this meta was finding out if people thought this was a problem or not. Solutions can come after that

@Tinkeringbell I'm quite happy with how the OP responded to my answer. They didn't stick around to argue. Unlike other people they didn't double down and subsequently get banned.

Q: Best way to tell that our paths go on different ways

Veined BobI'm following this stack from the beginning but posting this anonymously was needed. Context I'm in my mid-twenties and with my girlfriend for more than 8 years now. We basically grow up together, we learned a lot through those years and we had amazing time. We lived at the same place for one y...

OP has purposefully created a dummy account, and stated it.

@JesseBarnett You didn't provide a useful link

ooh ill fix
plus, even though we are always supposed to give OP the benefit of the doubt in their questions... I just can't with this one, it seems clear to me that they are not being truthful in describing how they feel towards the situation

There's nothing wrong with having multiple accounts as long as you don't derive any mechanical benefit from those accounts. So as long as you don't upvote your own post or use an account to get around a ban you should be in the clear.

@JesseBarnett I think it's not clear to me what Interpersonal Skill the problem is here.. also, there's no evidence if and what has already been tried...
One of those 'How to talk to X about Y to achieve Z' questions again..
Lacking cultural background as well I believe..

xD
there we go

8:05 AM
I just left a comment, my question already has a score of +5, I feel confident asking 'What skill is the problem' now XD

@Tinkeringbell Breakups add enough of a complication that I wouldn't consider it a duplicate of a generic "how do I tell someone x?" question.

@sphennings Still, it's one of those things where it is unclear to me what Interpersonal Skill we're talking about...

but they haven't added any of the detail to explain to us the unique complications
other than "she is the most important person in the world to me" which seems like a counter-productive comment

@Tinkeringbell Yes. They should clarify what they're actually asking, and provide a bit more context.
@JesseBarnett It sounds like OP genuinely loves them but can't see himself marrying them and having kids with them.

hahahahaha

8:08 AM
That seems like a reasonable reason to break up with someone if it's your goal to end up married with kids.

@sphennings I think the 'because I've never tried anyone else' part is a bit... off?

I've heard people express that sentiment before.

Oh, best way is opinion based too XD

8:11 AM
@Tinkeringbell I don't suppose suggesting polyamory as a way to experience other people would be a helpful answer.

@sphennings Well, they're not asking about Interpersonal Skills, so...XD

"I want to start a family, and there is a girl who wants to start a family with me, and I love her more than anything in the world.... so I think I should break up and never see her again and start sleeping with other people"

@JesseBarnett They're asking how to say "I think our paths go separate ways" that's just a nice way of saying I don't want to date you anymore.

if they just said that she is a lovely person, just not for them. or something along those lines then i think it would be fine.

I think the OP needs to figure out what they want before they ask a question. Their answers to our clarifying questions are muddying the waters not clarifying them.

@apaul So you voted to close your own Q. That's a first in my years on SE. ;)

@NVZ I've VTCed my own qquestions

@iFlo maybe clarify a bit more, that it is not your intention to break up with your gf. That you only want to have an honest discussion about your current feelings. Without such a clarification, your Q seems a bit self-contradicting. The edit of the title was really nice.
be aware that I can only speak for myself and not the IPS veterans here. but since you didn't get a response from them, here we are..

@Cashbee It's already reopened. Although I still don't see a question about an Interpersonal Skill :/ It's again one of those 'How to talk with X about Y to reach Z'...
Right now, to me it's more reading like asking for a transcript/thoughts on what to say... but since we're still discussing that stuff on meta, I am not going to throw a tantrum already

@NVZ You start with mentioning J, then and only then can you say A, but be sure to never say D

@JAD I've been buzy.. I'm N-V-Z.

@Cashbee Thx for you reply. Can you tell me what parts are contradicting ? Just read it again and all I found is that I stated that my issue is about talking to her, to come clean, not to find advice about how to break up.

@NVZ pennies are worthless here...

well, all I have to do is explain that no, I don't play checkers
@Tinkeringbell that's the point

@JAD Hmmm... sounds like that'll get boring soon too..

NVZ
@JAD somebody gets it. lol

And if you're lucky, it's origin doesn't even come from checkers but from geography

@Tinkeringbell heh

NVZ
@Tinkeringbell Oho. So your name translates to "well, that's nice"?

@NVZ No, just 'nice'

@Tinkeringbell heh

@Magisch Really though, since Maria might mean 'bitter' or 'recalcitrance' XD
Although Maria seems to have an ancient Egyptian origin meaning 'pretty' or 'well-shaped'... that certainly is wrong XD

JAD
@Tinkeringbell hmm, sounds plausible ;)

@JAD I'm going with the nice goddess or great queen XD

NVZ
@Tinkeringbell Wait, don't go..

JAD
10:28 AM
well, I have the problem that my second name has a dutch meaning, but isn't dutch

I'll change the nickname during lunch ;)
@JAD Pfft... I'm too busy right now to look into the meaning of the names I was baptised with XD
They're probably not that positive either XD

NVZ
Baptised? What?

JAD
@Tinkeringbell It's easy to make jokes about it though
Hi, my first name is Jarko, my second name is different

@JAD 'Anders'?

JAD
yep

10:30 AM
Hmmm... yeah, that gives you a nice cheesy introduction XD

NVZ
Last name Different, First name Jarko. I have no middle name. Quick. Rhyme. Fargo.

No, middle name XD
You got it wrong again! :P
And yeah, I was baptised when I was a baby, and got 2 extra names... I generally use the first of those when talking to international people, they generally can't pronounce my first name correctly

@Tinkeringbell bites back comment about how round can be a shape too :D

@Magisch Yeah, well... free-hand circle shaped maybe, certainly not a well-shaped round XD :P

NVZ
I quick googled "baptised". so you were sort of nicknamed those?
So your passport must have a different name, huh?

10:34 AM
@NVZ Yeah, my passport has baptism names
Lemme look up how that works in the Netherlands, so I can explain better..
Okay, so there's a real-first-name, a baptism-name and a call-name... For me, the baptism-name is my real-first-name, as in, that is the one I use for paying taxes and is on my passport.
But I have a call-name, which is what people have called me since I was born XD

NVZ
I don't think we have any such ceremonies in my place. I had a nickname "ttuttu" as a baby. My grandparents and other relatives used to call me that for a long time until I started feeling embarrassed with pet names, and got rid of such names. But now I miss being called that, cuz those people are no longer with us. Life.

Maybe you could translate this Dutch Wikipedia page: nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doopnaam
It's very different from a nickname

@Tinkeringbell what about people who don't get baptised?
I wasn't. I only have one name and one surname, and they're both on my birth certificate

@Magisch Yep, that's how it works
Btw, quick poll: for the new username, do I go with goddess or great queen? XD
It would be either nicegoddess or nicegreatqueen...

Q: How should I deal with a StackExchange clique?

Bad_BishopI was on a certain StackExchange site that has a clique of high-rep users. I posted an answer to a newer member's question. It was a straightforward textbook answer. The OP upvoted and accepted, but one of the high-rep users took issue with the answer and downvoted it. They were gracious enough ...

@ExtrovertedMainMan I think we have a meta discouraging such posts as off-topic, lemme look
@ExtrovertedMainMan Yep, comment is up and this seems to be off-topic

Q: How to deal with someone who ignores your lack of knowledge?

HugoBDesignerI purposely made this question generally broad so that it can apply to more people in need of similar interpersonal skills, but I can easily make it about a specific scenario if needed. Problem For my whole life, people have put me on a "genius" pedestal, and while when I was a kid it was a fun...

@NVZ fake
@ExtrovertedMainMan ignore them. Revenge complete

You should maybe state the context. This is a completely different situation if your boss or a customer asks you this question than when your partner or a close friend has a bit of fun. — Raditz_35 25 secs ago

@AnkitSharma You're in a good mood today...
Yay! Round numbers :)

@Tinkeringbell Congratz, take a screen quick :D

@J.Doe I just did that ;)
That's where that piece comes from :)

@Tinkeringbell I don't have that much time to answer anymore
especially not now since I have to read the entire new EU data protection law

@Magisch Yeah, last answer I wrote was a week ago already XD

A: How can I explain to people that a programmer isn't a computer technician?

Lost Soul You can't. What others think of you is, most of the times, beyond your control. Note: I'd specifically like to exclude immediate family members and close friends from this categorisation of others. Ok, don't shoot the messenger just yet. Please allow me to clarify: Some people aren't all...

@Tinkeringbell I am almost always in good mood ;)

@JesseBarnett Then flag them as duplicates.

@Tinkeringbell It was quite a lot of time for me, but I have reminder of only one which unfortunately someone flagged as NLN and got removed. :/

@sphennings i did... thought I wouldn't be able to find the questions so I started to ask here... then my searches suddenly proved fruitful

hummingbirds are cool, but a little scary

1:40 PM
@Magisch Why are they scary?

@Tinkeringbell so fragile

@Magisch Oh... not the response I was expecting XD... Yeah, they're tiny and fragile, but they're also very fun to watch.
I remember spending hours at the zoo trying to spot all the hummingbirds in 1 exhibit ;)

well, after I see this intimidating creature, I run for my life

@Tinkeringbell small kittens are also scary... cute but scary

@Magisch Are you easily scared by fragile things?

1:46 PM
yes
they're so easily broken
reminds me of how quickly life can end

Hmmm.. I never managed to break a small pet, and I'm pretty rough sometimes XD
I think you're overthinking it :)

@Tinkeringbell I used to get sad for days when I accidentally stepped on my cat's tail

@Magisch Ohhh... But that's only justified :P Did it look accusingly at you for weeks too? :P

nah my cat was super sweet

My friend's cat is the best programmer cat
goes to sleep on your lap

1:55 PM
@ArtOfCode I hate those, they make me itchy :P
