@TheTinyMan trolling comes from the fishing term. You would have bait behind a boat, hoping to get a bite. If enough fish struck, you'd get quite the hall.

@TheSnarkKnight I don't know the first thing about fishing, other than it ideally involves fish. The one time I went fishing it decidedly did not, though, just sitting awkwardly with my older brother with whom I share nothing at all. :-p

Internet trolling meant much the same thing. You'd post something to get a reaction. Usually, this was satire, or something clever, feigned ignorance on a subject. A controvertial opinion, anything to get people to start "taking the bait".

The point of trolling is to be more funny than malicious. IF the one being trolled thinks it's funny too, it's an epic troll.

@TheSnarkKnight So basically you're casting un-trapped bait, so that the fish will be more eager to bite at your trapped (on the fishing rod) bait? Or is that for nets or something?

@TheTinyMan yes, it's a way of catching fish in such a manner. Your boat goes at a very slow speed, dragging the bait behind it. Fist take the bait, and after a bit, you haul your fish into the boat.

@TheSnarkKnight Yeah, I'm not convinced that that's how trolls see their trolling. :-( At least not any more, but not at all that I can recall in recent Internet history.

Trolling is not abuse in and of itself, but taken too far, it can be. Gangstalking someone and telling them that they should kill themselves is gangstalking and harassment. It's not trolling.

He's asked if rewording it would help, and I...kind of feel like the problem is the information being sought, not the verbiage of the question? Which is to say, it's still basically looking to be told which path is 'right.'

Is my interpretation correct, that the change he suggests wouldn't get the question on-topic?
