00:00 - 19:0019:00 - 23:00

7:00 PM
...the first time in 20 years for my town, but still, there was snow

@NVZ That's something different.

NVZ
@MetaEd hey, the hat fits you perfect. when life gives you hats... :)

@NVZ Thank you.

Snow here is finally melting. Trains still aren't running though, and this morning I could ice skate to the station across the road... it was slippery!

Netherlands?

NVZ
7:04 PM
The Netherlands. Yeah. A favorite place of mine. I have a good pen pal there.

@Tinkeringbell Trains shut down when there's snow? :o

@anonymous2 Yep!
how'd you guess?
@TheTinyMan Well, the tracks freeze, they have block of ice underneath, they just break down... our railway system isn't build for snow ;)

@Tinkeringbell Ah....

@Tinkeringbell That's awkward. How have you been getting to work?
Working remotely?

No, not disclosing PII... ;)

NVZ
7:07 PM
@anonymous2 mystery solved. scooby dooby dooo....

@TheTinyMan Remote working on Monday and yesterday, train today. That's why I was home half a hour late :P
@anonymous2 Hahaha ;) I thought you were guessing, not stating a fact :P
@NVZ pen pals are cool! I was thinking of picking up postcarding again. But I guess I'll wait until I have my own apartment. My mom didn't really like the flood of postcards arriving ;)

@Tinkeringbell Next question, 'ice skate' was used as a figure of speech there, right? Right now my headcanon is ice skating as a legitimate means of conveyance. xD

@TheTinyMan Yes, I didn't use the irons. But that doesn't mean I didn't make the same movements while wearing sturdy shoes :P

@Tinkeringbell Lol. Sorry, I put the ? there because there was a 1% not sure I'd clicked the right profile. Furthermore, you could have been travelling or something.

The ice was too thing for irons.
@anonymous2 Me and travelling? To and from work, yes. Anything else? Not really..

7:11 PM
@Tinkeringbell Sure.

@Tinkeringbell That's a neat idea though, haha. I've tried ice skating like three times...for some reason my ankles are in agony when I do that in no time at all. I can't decide if I've been fitting my shoes wrong or if ice skating is simply not meant for people as massive as I am. :-p

NVZ
@anonymous2 i frequently misread your name as anongoodnurse. lol. she's another user here and has a blue username as well.

@TheTinyMan Depends on the kind of skates your wearing, definitely
These are hell to use:

@NVZ Oh... lol! Sorry.

@Tinkeringbell Well I wore whatever the heck the ice skating rink rented out, in terms of 'kind of skates.' I think they offered speed skates and another kind and I took the other kind? I might be completely misremembering that though.
@Tinkeringbell No, the ones I used had blades very similar in length to the boot

7:13 PM
@Tinkeringbell Long blades they have. I'm more used to hockey skates.

You probably rented hockey skates then:

@Tinkeringbell Yeah, that looks like the things

Mine are the best of two worlds:

Look speedy

Soft boot, so they won't hurt/cause blisters..
@anonymous2 They are...
They're more for long distance speed runs than the short bursts and quick turns you can do on hockey skates
(I'm not speedy btw!)

7:15 PM
Quick turns would be quite a trick on those things, lol.

is there such a thing as being too large for hockey skates?

Are those 14 inch blades?
No, they're longer than that, eh.
@TheTinyMan It comes down to turns.

@anonymous2 Turns? What do you mean?

@TheTinyMan but I'm guessing your ankles hurt because the skates you rented were from some hard plastic with a supposedly soft inner boot. That's not nice.

@Tinkeringbell :'( I miss ice-skating

7:18 PM
Yeah, I do too. But I can always go to a ice-hall to skate :D

@Tinkeringbell That does sound like my observation at the time, I think :-p

@TheTinyMan Come over to the Netherlands, and I'll get you some proper ones to try out :P

@Tinkeringbell That's the problem - there aren't any remotely nearby

@Tinkeringbell All right, my flight leaves in an hour! :-P

@Mithrandir24601 I have a car and can drive from one side of the country to the other and back in half a day if I'm going east/west
So, yeah, the ice hall is nearby too :P
@TheTinyMan And it will arrive at?

7:20 PM
@TheTinyMan Oh, making quick turns (say 2-3 foot diameter).

@Mithrandir24601 I always preferred roller blades to ice skates. Firstly because I could always accelerate, but never slow down or make rapid turns, so wheels were safer than knife edges

And secondly because there is never ice here, and I can't be bothered going round in a rink - I want to go places..fast

@Tinkeringbell Well... Consider yourself fortunate then :P

Loved roller blading to work when I was in Denmark

7:21 PM
@Tinkeringbell 8:30 AM!
CET.

Never tried roller blading before, actually...

@RoryAlsop Is rollerblading the one with 4 weels in pairs of two? Or four/five weels in a row?

5 in a row
roller skates have 2 pairs of wheels (a la 1970)

@TheTinyMan I'm horrible at CET things... :P By that time, I'm on a train. Just ring the doorbell, mom will open ;)

@Tinkeringbell You're gonna feel awfully awkward if that actually happens! xD

7:23 PM
@RoryAlsop Yeah I was thinking it was reversed. But anyway, I did both, the 1970's thing a lot when I was younger, when I got older the rollerblading ;)
@TheTinyMan Why? I won't be there :P

@Tinkeringbell Is CET the wrong time zone? xD Google suggests to me that the Netherlands has several, haha, so I just guessed one.

Q: How to ask a girl to hook up with me, after multiple coffee dates already,

user10285There's this girl who I've been seeing for coffee on the weekends - we met through a fairly new dating app called Bumble, and we clicked right away. The problem is that I'm typically horrible at knowing how to move forward and ask her for sex; getting friendzoned has basically been the story of ...

Q: Authenticity vs. reserve

user9042106I've been criticized for being too reserved and guarded. I've spent time considering how to be more open and 'authentic' with others, but my experiences have only confirmed the necessity of keeping people at a distance. For example, when I let people really know what I think about an issue, I've ...

@TheTinyMan I was in Amsterdam on Thursday and I almost forgot there was a time difference of 1 hour, as I forgot my watch, and my devices all autoupdated on arrival :-)

@RoryAlsop I'm from the USA, where we have 4-11 time zones depending on how you count them and if you include the non-mainland ones :-p

@ExtrovertedMainMan I think this needs to be closed, but I'm unsure which reason to pick? Would unclear what you're asking be a nice match to my comment?

7:28 PM
@TheTinyMan I know - it's crazy. I used to do a fair bit of work both east and west coast US, as well as trips as far east as Dubai, Singapore and Australia meant a lot of trying to sort out my body clock. But the flying back and forth did eventually make me mostly immune to jetlag
@Tinkeringbell I went for Opinion Based

@RoryAlsop Nice, JessK is probably going for too broad, that leaves votes nicely all over the place :P
Ah well, it's probably all of the above anyway ;)

How is this question more opinion-based than other 'how do I approach the topic of X with Y person' questions? I can see it as being too broad though.

What's with the flood of new users and questions? Is that a consequence of the hats?
@TheTinyMan Then go for it ;)
I can see the opinion based: There's a lot of ways to do this, it would basically become a polling question on different ways to do this...

I don't personally think that it is too broad, I think I understand what's being asked. :-p But I can understand how some people would want more explicit clarification.

@TheTinyMan well, what I would suggest for me would definitely not work for that individual.

7:34 PM
@Tinkeringbell That's a good point...that line is still so fine for me.

:D

Hi @Catija :) Nice hat ;)

:D I was really, really excited when they released it this year because it's perfect since I like putting the hat on Ben anyway... but I didn't think I'd ever get one due to it having been done before.

@ExtrovertedMainMan After reading this a few times, I'm getting creeps... I'm almost afraid to give advice on how to invite the girl over because I'm imagining nightmares...
@Catija Cool. I got this as a third one, and it fits the animal best ;)
Huh? What's wrong with that? What did I not get this time?

What's wrong with what?

7:40 PM
well, something was flagged, but the flag was wrong

@Catija Someone chatflagged my message from this morning... lemme dig up the permalink

10 hours ago, by Tinkeringbell
Oh cool, we have a new special snowflake in the top bar. :D Now, let's see how many hats we can get. Who's going hathunting?
was flagged, for what reason escapes me

"Special snowflake" is often used as a pejorative these days, but I assume that wasn't the context?

@Videonauth Me too... so if someone could enlighten me?
@TheTinyMan Really? Back to the urban dictionary it is I guess...

(And I've seen a LOT of pejoratives go unflagged, especially today :-P )

7:42 PM
What were you referring to when you say "special snowflake", anyway?

I don't know, is the person that flagged it present here? I want them to know that I didn't know that, and that I really just meant a 'special snowflake button in the top bar'.

@Tinkeringbell It's started coming up in American politics as a word that conservatives use to insult liberals' sensibilities...and after a year or so of that, liberals often started throwing it back when a conservative's sensibility is offended. The "special" is usually omitted these days.

Ah, that makes more sense.

@Catija Maybe you can edit it? So the person that flagged it can feel free to come in here ;)

@Tinkeringbell Sure.

7:44 PM
well i have to many chats open, wish you all a nice morning/noon/afternoon/evening wherever you are :)
bye

@Videonauth Have a nice whatever!

Better?

@Catija Lots I think :D
Thank you!
(now rory's comment on that makes more sense to me too... ;) )

Great :D

Oh, the phrase also has a meaning over here in a non-pejorative context, basically meaning "someone who is special and unique." Usually implies an element of childlikeness, I think, which is how it evolved into a pejorative.

7:46 PM
I figured that giving it some context would help. The mention of hats is there but not which snowflake you meant.

@Tinkeringbell I didn't flag it - I thought it was funny. As I'm special :-)

@RoryAlsop Well, someone didn't ;) I hope the context helps them to understand it was just a conversation starter and observation of the new top bar button, not a pejorative.

Well... it would have been obvious if you (well, any blue) had flagged it, since it would have just disappeared :P

@Catija oh yeah - I forget moddiness carries over chat rooms

I don't know why my message saying I'll behave was deleted. I guess that absolves me from that promise?

7:51 PM
@TheSnarkKnight To be fair you were continuing to engage in a way that was only halfway behaving

Nope. It just means you were expected to do so from when you joined the room, not only after posting that message.

Leaving such a message around would of course imply that you can just write 'I'll misbehave' and that we have to allow that.

I'm sorry, but that's against the rules! :P
(seriously, I don't know why that was removed, but it's not the worst thing ;) )

You can aim to misbehave all day of course xD
They can't take the sky from you after all

@Tinkeringbell I never bother to announce when I will misbehave, as that's kind of the default.
Apparently I can't change my name to "Robin Tracy" either.

@TheSnarkKnight Hmmm... Then we need to rewrite default() :P ... really though, it might have been better had you just let HDE handle it... (and HDE might have done better taking this to a private room?)...

The next thing I'm waiting for is to be called a Nazi, as it's about the most ironic label one can throw on me. By the way, those wacky Nazis are fun (and easy) to troll. No sense of humor whatsoever.

7:58 PM
@TheSnarkKnight Personally, I know that was a joke. But for an outsider seeing that starred in this room, especially when they're already peeved, that might be confusing...
@TheSnarkKnight You weren't being called anything before you butted in with 'must resist'...

@Tinkeringbell If someone comes in spoiling for a fight, no amount of attempts to mollify him or her will achieve anything.

Yeah, if I could down-vote starred messages I would have, that's not something I'm proud to have stickied in a chat room I'm a part of.

After that, you made yourself an easy target

@Tinkeringbell I'm always an easy target. Have been since I was a child, growing up with disabilities and being called gay constantly.
the beatings for being gay weren't fun either.
Maybe I should change my nick to something that represents all the marginalized groups I belong to.

@TheSnarkKnight Okay, NOT LIKE THAT! and you know it. I meant to say that if you'd have kept your mouth shut, they probably wouldn't even have noticed you were there ;)

8:02 PM
@Tinkeringbell if not me, he would have attacked someone else. Better it's me, as I find it amusing. Someone else would have been hurt.
My feelings don't get hurt because I have so few of them.

@TheSnarkKnight I'm saying your feelings are probably hurt or else you wouldn't be bringing this up again.
I also see no signs of that conversation turning into name-calling until you interjected.

@Tinkeringbell no name calling from me.
at me, yes, but from me, no.
again, better me than someone else.

I dunno, "someone who treats people as purse puppies" sounded a lot more like a personal attack to me than literally quoting your starred message. And before that, he was having an individual conversation with an administrator - he had a target, and that target is not only armored but armed.

I don't really know how to explain this, but let me try. The convo is still there. It was between the mod and the user until you interjected.

That gave that user (that was already in a bad mood, mind you!) a target to focus their anger on. If you hadn't stepped in like that, HDE would have been able to handle things just fine. See how he keeps trying to steer the convo back to the topic HDE wanted to discuss with the user?

Now, after you interrupted that conversation, you became a target in it as well. I appreciate the chivalry of jumping in front of HDE to catch the bullets, but it reall

OK... can we move on to something else? Please?

8:13 PM
@Catija Sure.
Weather report? How's the weather there?

So back to ice skating. How do you stop? :-p
I've only ever roller skated, and I have a brake pad on roller skates! I have an ex who did roller derby, she told me that as someone who hadn't skated since childhood I was really good at it xD

@TheTinyMan just shave the top layer of the ice by turning your blades ;)

@Tinkeringbell That sounds so destructive! :o

Psh, linking videos is the lifehack of the chatroom! ;-)

8:15 PM
@TheTinyMan That's what they mop up the floors for!

I've also always wondered...like, there are visible cuts in the ice. How do ice skates handle having a non-smooth surface? Wouldn't it be bumpy? :o My understanding of the physics involved is insufficient!

@Catija My skates don't have toe-picks... you really have to put them at a certain angle to the ice to stop

@Tinkeringbell Is this dramatically different from a turning angle? Or is it basically just a very specific kind of turn?

@TheTinyMan When the ice starts getting old, you do feel it, and yes, there is an increase in friction.

8:17 PM
It is oooh, soooo pleasant to skate on fresh ice.

You can also point the points of your skates towards each other if your not going too fast
Btw, half of what these people are doing is pretty dangerous. Often you can't really see if there's enough ice underneath the snow

One week from today I'm flying out to see my children.

@TheSnarkKnight Cool :)

@TheSnarkKnight Nice!
How many?

I have two daughters, 7 and 10.
They live 2000 miles away with their mother.
But at least I see them on Christmas.

8:22 PM
Awww... Enjoy seeing them!

My eldest is a real mini-me.... snark included
The two reasons I'm still here.
my girls/

Do they know what they're gonna be when they grow up, @TheSnarkKnight? :-)

@TheTinyMan probably women

@Mithrandir That's an assumption! :-P

that's why I said 'probably' ;)

8:30 PM
@Mithrandir That's fair :-)

@TheTinyMan My oldest wants to be a professional golfer. She's already competing, and winning

@TheSnarkKnight Haha, wow! What little kid wants to grow up to be a GOLFER?? xD What got her into that?
(no disrespect or anything mind you)

@TheSnarkKnight I imagine kid version of you and I see just this person with the most scathing wit and no filter

@TheTinyMan One of her first toys was a plastic toy golf set. She fell in love

@TheSnarkKnight That's super cute :-D

8:35 PM
@Magisch When she was five, she painted me into a logical corner. She does have a scathing wit, but a decent filter
@TheTinyMan and the family golfs, my dad was a good golfer, I golf, and her mother's family golfs.
So, it started with her just wanting to go along.
Then she found she had a natural talent.

Okay! And this is why we should close questions and edit later: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/8028/… ... I just had to ping 4! answerers that the question had changed

Then she realized she could make money somewhere down the line.

Yay, nother hat! :)

noice

@Tinkeringbell changed my answer there

8:43 PM
Now, I still need that secret hat. Can anybody help me with that? I'd like some people to take a look at this answer that I'm very proud of :P interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/4842/…
@TheSnarkKnight Cool! I'll take a look and remove the comment ;)
Much better! :D

@Tinkeringbell those are things I typically do.
People have noticed that the more I joke around, the worse mood I am in.

@TheSnarkKnight - re: GIF avatar, have you ever seen the CM JNat's avatar?

9:11 PM
@Mithrandir I'll have to check it out at home. work screens out almost all graphics

It's beautiful though
You might call it "the bomb."

9:26 PM
whew
asked a question on the big and scary SO

9:42 PM
Closed as a dupe

actually not even
apparently I am the only one having trouble with operators in c++
heck, it even has an operator in the name ;(

10:15 PM
day of flags in here?

Q: How do I tell my friends and family members that I don't appreciate it when they say I look like a bird without causing a confrontation?

JordadWhile I ultimately believe that my family and friends love me and would never do anything to intentionally hurt me, there is a certain culture among my immediate and extended family members and my friend group of lighthearted teasing that I feel sometimes goes too far. It started a little over ...
