Q: My brother messes up his life (and those of other family members) by doing nothing. How to handle/resolve this situation?

AdviceSeekerI'm asking here as my last resort. I have a younger brother which will turn 30 in a few weeks and who has no clue what to do with his life. One could assume that he's old enough to make his own decisions but it affects also the life of other family members, especially the one of our mother with ...

Q: Awkward situation with the director of our lab, after the holiday party

user10220I hooked up with a co-director of our lab at the holiday party this past weekend, and now things are a little awkward. We're both male and gay, and we had consensual, anal intercourse back at his apartment, with me being the receptive partner. Should I schedule a private meeting with him to dis...

4:19 AM
@ExtrovertedMainMan OK... maybe a bit TMI?

A J
@Catija TMI?
Are you talking about the H word?

Too much information.
H word? "holiday"?

A J
or I word?
Because only that'd be TMI.

I don't know that it being anal or that the OP was on the receiving end is necessary?

A J
4:53 AM
@Catija yes, exactly.

I used the word anal once referring to weighing in grams. It got edited out when the answers and question were posted elsewhere. It only bugged me a little.
And only for a minute.
So, I really need to access my email (my normal email, the same one I've used forever) without my phone (still awol). Is there a way?

You used your phone number as your backup access for confirming your identity?

5:09 AM
Yep. But now I don't have that phone. I got very confused with google ids, you tube ids, amazon ids, and missing cards inluding both my picture ids and my debit card.
it's a mess

And you think Keith has it?

I have my VA (military) ID, I was issued a new one. I'll hopefully have my state ID tomorrow (same number as my DL probably)
Yes, I think Keith has my phone and drivers license. I actually kind of know him from an encounter months ago concerning my cat.

Do you have a way to contact him and get it back? Or to at least get the confirmation for the email account from it?

He knows. If he works tonight I expect to see him. He's a nighttime security guard for my apartment complex.

Well, hopefully he will stop by and then it will be OK. I don't know how to reset the password if you don't have access to a phone. Were you not ever logged into your email on your computer?

5:14 AM
But I have no way to call him. Or to contact him where he sits guarding the gate.

There's not a phone there? You don't have his cell number, I guess?

We left it with him just saying he'd come by. I think he did come by while I was sleeping. I needed the sleep and did not expect him to take my phone. His intentions seen to be good, but the result is a big problem. I can make calls now using a Google voice "hangouts" number out of Texas. So I can make calls, but I can't get to my email - and I'm expecting important stuff.
Plus I have unlimited background checks I can supposedly run, but I can't see them. They are important to what I'm trying to unravel here, but it won't let me check the box that agrees to not use the information to do things I don't plan to do anyway. So I have not seen even my own report. Never mind the report of the person who seems to be very central to the whole thing.
I want to say more but not here.

It's OK. I'm not sure what to say about the reports, either... that site didn't really look too trustworthy.

More explanation here is dangerous to the case. The case that's important.
I finally spoke to one of the two people who have been helping with the apartment/cat issue.
If they show up before my ride to the DMV at 3pm tomorrow, I may be OK. If not, I can only hope that my camera sells for more than the hot check I will write tomorrow to get a state ID (just like a driver's license, but without driving permission because I can't pass a vision test). That's ok, I don't plan to drive again unless I can do it safely, which I can't with my vision and mobility issues.
I'm seriously overdrawn, in part because my hand trembled at just the wrong moment when I has looking at something I'd rather not discuss here.
$30 became $55 because I was already in overdraft protection.

5:34 AM
That's fine. :) We'll try to get you back into discord. Do you not remember your password for that, either? Does your browser not save the password for you?

I get into the room, but I can't invite anyone.

You're in the room called "Jolene-private"?

Hold on, I'll try again so I can say exactly what happens.

OK.

The shortcut I had on my desktop is dead, so I deleted it.
The room I had was empty. Can you make a new one and invite me?

5:38 AM
can you go to discordapp.com?

yep, I'm at the opening screen now

Does it give you the option to log in?

It's trying again to install the app for PC

I just use it in the browser. I don't think you need the app?

@Tinkeringbell I'm having trouble seeing why that specific question was off-topic

Me too. It's the second time this happens though, yesterday someone flagged the question from Mithrandir. That's why I'm peeved again, I had this discussion before.

LEAVE A COMMENT! when downvoting or close-voting
This one for example already had 3 close-votes for too broad, but no comment. https://interpersonal.stackexchange.com/q/7949/1599

I think that's not very useful.
Especially since it's a new user

hmm, stumbled on another piece of ammo in the answers in comments discussion:

Q: Short answers as comments — please resist the urge

mattdmThis morning I'm feeling a little grumpy about comments. :) Particularly, too many short answers being left as comments when they should be answers, or left off entirely. Using the comments robs us of the ability to vote up or down or suggest edits, and basically defeats the functioning of the S...

Looks interesting. Will have to wait a little though :P

> I'm too important to be expected to submit an answer and have the community decide where in the pecking order of multiple answers it should fall. My answers should always be at the top of the page, regardless of how the other users in the community view said answers, and should be sheltered from review and correction by the rest of the community.
From that post... That's a pretty sharp statement..

yep
not wrong though

No, not wrong....
But I don't think I can use that as a stock comment ;)

nah, but if people continue to argue, you can slap them with that

@JarkoDubbeldam That's true, but that's also a thing mods should do, not me :P
I'll just flag users for repeatedly answering in comments ;)

2 hours later…
11:58 AM
@Tinkeringbell while generally useful advice, I don't think that you need to every single time.

@Mithrandir If it's a question about coding principles, that goes fine, that's true...

You can't expect people to leave a comment on everything they close vote or downvote - that becomes really tedious and annoying, and opens up the downvoter to revenge by the downvoted person.

@Mithrandir Hmmm, maybe the message should have stated 'when you start vtc-ing old questions as off-topic, leave a comment'.

The meta discussions about forcing users to leave a comment when downvoting/VTCing may be an interesting read.

@Mithrandir We have meta's on that? :) Here or on meta.se?

12:02 PM
metaSE

I'm not for forcing people, I must admit I'm so tired of some users sometimes I just dv/cv without commenting.

But that doesn't mean that I haven't tried first...

And in this case, it's the second day in a row where things get flagged off-topic and show up in the review queue without explanation.

I have no way to see who's doing it, but I'd like to reach that person to explain why they're not having success so far.

While yes, I would appreciate knowing why my question was downvoted, and yes, I would appreciate knowing why someone cast a close vote, I don't think it's unreasonable to cast one or the other - or both - without a comment. It's a good thing to do, but shouldn't be necessary.
But I agree that when VTCing old questions it's good to leave a comment.

Q: Husband's former friend hit my son during a bow hunt - how to proceed?

MerPreamble: these names all all fake to comply with site policies. My common-law partner (Steve) and step-son (Ted) are fairly "indoorsy" guys, and have never even camped before (except sitting in an RV overnight). My husband continually asked a friend of ours, Antonio, to do a "guys hunting day",...

is this not on topic now?

@MisterPositive This question was never edited

A J
yep

Problem I had with the question was it's much more of a generalized "what should I do" then anything to do with IPS

@Magisch The last paragraph seems answerable to me.

> Should Steve and I try to talk to Antonio again, or seek legal action against him?
Really?

12:56 PM
> Should Steve and I try to talk to Antonio again, or seek legal action against him?
Off topic imo

Again, IMHO, this seems answerable. ( too me, don't judge )
;-}

I think that's what makes this question being put on hold. (Personnaly I would have picked too broad/ unclear since it's just a goal that's lacking, not off-topic)

We're not here to decide between non IPS solutions and IPS solutions for people, we're here to answer IPS questions in particular
@MisterPositive judges

@Magisch :-{

Hmmm.. I'll take a rummage on meta tonight (I've been way too little there lately anyways)... If we don't have a question, I might just ask one along the lines of: Are questions asking whether it's worth the effort to use IPS on-topic here
I think the answer will be 'NO' anyway

Just now. I don't think it's a good edit.
May I reverse?

@Tinkeringbell Yep
Too much legal stuff obscuring the goal, which I think is to salvage the friendships.
taking my judged self elsewhere for the day.

wait
why are we adding in the question about legal action again?
oh, hmm I see

@JarkoDubbeldam My thought was to take it out so the focus could be on repairing the friendship, which I think is the goal.

Yeah, I just read Tink's comment

1:03 PM
But it is still to vague even with the edit. The edit was ok, just not sufficient.

@JarkoDubbeldam I think this is important. I'm waiting to see how it turns out....
If anybody feels it's wrong, we need to seriously hammer out editing (or flag in a mod).

@MisterPositive Exactly, that edit did nothing to improve the question, except for maybe getting it reopened...

@MisterPositive Hmmm... I might have made the 'hookup' even more explicit ;)

@Tinkeringbell Well in my case, MisterPositive....

its weird how I show up as mister positive here, when my profile is IamNotListening...

@MisterPositive Oh hey :P .... nice way to get me all confused! :P
Why are you not listening?

LMAO
I don't know why it does that...

Me neither... but it's confusing! :/

I find the name ironic on this site.

1:14 PM
@MisterPositive Haha ;) Yeah, it sorta is ;)

maybe for chat you only get your main screen name...

yes
Same for Mithrandir/ Arwen Undomiel

@Tinkeringbell Partially
I know some people who are really judgemental but some of those are guys

@JarkoDubbeldam but on multiple sites only the main name shows?

@Tinkeringbell Your name kinda says female software engineer
from first impression

1:21 PM
@Magisch See, not that hard :P

Knowing you, about right
"Knowing"
As much as you can through a screen with only text

@MisterPositive One chat server for all sites, your chat name is the name you have on the attached site (main site) on the chat profile

I just found out there's a T-rex named after me: thenational.ae/uae/… :D :3

SO on your case :)

Nobody of my real life friends uses stack or even is a developer or any sort

Has Tanmay contacted you recently, out of curiosity?

@Magisch Some of my colleagues may be on SE ;-)
But I don't know who they are, and they don't know me... I also don't expect them to be hanging around on IPS

@Mithrandir Yeah
Mid november. Wanted me to speak at another conference but I couldn't because work wouldn't let me take a day off this close to the CoC exam
I told art about it

@Mithrandir I don't want to message him on skype over this though
I assume he'll show up in deepsmoke when he has the models

Yeah, I assume so.

Can someone take a look at my edit here: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/7949/…
Needs another pair of eyes

I think the problem statement is not what OP is looking for, otherwise the edit is good

@Magisch :( I thought that was what they edited in...

1:45 PM
OP is more looking for a way to verbally shake sense into his brother so that he gets his life together

That wasn't what was in their own edit?
There, it looked like it focused on having a talk to understand said brother... but feel free to have another edit ;)

I continue to be amazed at how long the "background" is for so many of these posts.

@TheSnarkKnight Yeah well.... I'm not going to say it's wrong, see my own background :P

@Tinkeringbell Well, I get the impression that many people are coming here to vent, rather than actually ask questions... but that's just my impression.

Hmmm... I don't know about that. I wrote some long backstories. As long as they are presented in a factual manner, I don't really mind them...

As soon as there's a lot of negative language, yeah, then I'll be suspecting venting

1:57 PM
@Tinkeringbell well, I'm an impatient SOB, so there is that.... I think the dividing line is between "needed background" and "seeking justification/validation"

That too... But that's generally visible in other ways.

If I'm looking at a validation/justification question I most often see
- One tried solution
- A (ranty) story about that not working
- A question that seems to focus on 'What went wrong here' instead of on 'What can I improve/try the next time'? (So, more focused on the past than on the future)

Even questions with a very short background can be 'validate me' questions
If there's an amazing background, but also an exhaustive list of tried solutions, that doesn't really read like a 'validate me'...
(in the case of that question we were discussing)

@TheSnarkKnight very much like twp then

@Magisch yeah but at TWP, we are far less... forgiving.

If TWP is a soft site, this is a softer site
by design, mind you

2:13 PM
knocks screen seems solid to me

@Mithrandir ouch, that hurt

@Magisch and it will get softer is whining is encouraged

Sid
I have an issue which I am not sure is a fit for the site.
Can I ask here?

Always :D

@Tinkeringbell I picture you actually sitting behind the screen of mithrandir
since y'all live in the same country

2:28 PM
@Magisch Wish it were true ;) I prefer sunshine over the slushy snow that's raining down now

"Mithrandir, why is there an actual person inside your monitor?" - Mithrandir's parents, probably

Sid
I have a rather cold relationship with someone. How do I manage to make it better?
The Coldness is probably due to disagreement on certain things, them imposing their views on me, me being rather immature at times, etc.

@Sid this is about as broad a question as you could get.

@Magisch ?
No we don't

Sid
Exactly. That's why I didn't want to ask on the main site.

2:31 PM
There is no single thing that could make it better - but working out issues, regaining trust, forgiveness, understanding...

@Mithrandir You're also in the netherlands, no?

Sid
@Magisch Mith is not even close to the Netherlands

Hahaha
;D
over here

@Sid cold relationships require more than we can answer here, there are entire books on the subject
Awwww, GEEEEEEEEEEEZ, am I the only American in here?

I think we need to bring Democracy to this site.
and freedom

And liberate it from its oil?

@TheSnarkKnight hey, I'm American - just not living there now ;)

@TheSnarkKnight #I'mScottish

We love to spread freedom. Be careful or we'll bring freedom to you to
too
@RoryAlsop well, if you're Scottish, thank god for the internet, as it's the only way you'll ever get anyone else to understand you, who isn't also Scottish ;)
All hail the Scottish people, who have managed to frighten two of the most powerful forces ever to walk the earth. The Romans, and the Apple development team trying to get Siri to recognize the Scottish accent.

Sid
@TheTinyMan Something like this- qph.ec.quoracdn.net/…

2:37 PM
@Sid WE HAVE TO BRING DEMOCRACY TO SPACE NOW

@Mithrandir are you coming back eventually, or staying in Israel?
AMERICA: Keeping freedom safe from democracy!

Probably staying, but heck, I'm 15, I'm not making decisions like that now

A J
@TheTinyMan No, not until The First Order is there. ;-P

Sid
@RoryAlsop They trust me enough. The other 3 is a tad difficult because I don't really spend much time with them.

@Mithrandir dang, I would have been off by a few decades if I had guessed your age. You are VERY mature for a 15 year old. Either that or I am extremely immature.
or, could be both.

2:40 PM
@TheSnarkKnight heh heh
@TheSnarkKnight nah - I'm very easy to understand. I have a very mild Scottish accent. Ahm no a Weegie, ye ken

@TheSnarkKnight shows up ten minutes late with starbucks another 'merican here :P

@TheSnarkKnight I'm gonna go with 'both'
@EmC Yeah! A real 'Murican! Starbucksand ten minutes late! ;-)

@TheTinyMan yeah, I always say, you are only young once, but you can be immature forever.

@TheSnarkKnight From the mouths of the mentally babe, as it were.

@TheTinyMan now I just need to get my extra large fries from McDonald's and I'll be all set

Sid
2:43 PM
Why is that every food in the West tends to be fried?

@Sid In Scotland - deep fried :-)

@Sid eagle stares judgmentally

@TheSnarkKnight o_o Everyone seems to say the same thing, but I didn't think that I sounded that different from my peers.

dude go to a Midwest state fair. we have deep fried oreos.. deep fried twinkies.. deep fried butter
I've had deep fried ice cream before, that was great

@Sid I'd argue that's predominantly america

2:44 PM
@EmC I've always wanted to try deep fried ice cream...

@EmC don't forget the deep fried oreo cookies!

@EmC the Arbroath buttery - it's basically lard, coated, deep fried then with butter spread on it

@TheTinyMan Baked Alaska is great

@RoryAlsop 0_o ok you win, haha

Sid
@Mithrandir your peers are too mature too. :P

2:45 PM
@Mithrandir you sound nothing like a 15 year old

Don't forget Biscuits and sausage gravy

And of course the classic here - the deep fried Mars Bar

@RoryAlsop do you know what Americans call the Mars bar? Is that the 3 Musketeers over here?

@TheSnarkKnight dunno actually - I'll google

@TheSnarkKnight We have Mars bars over here too

2:47 PM
@TheTinyMan really? I have never seen one

yep - still the same

Someone I know from the states talked about deep fried butter
and I was like ???

@TheSnarkKnight I haven't seen one in a few years I guess

apparently it's a thing

well - it will taste different, as US chocolate tastes different to the rest

2:48 PM
LIKE FREEDOM

@Magisch it's delicious, as long as you discount the warnings from your heart and circulatory system

The worldwide Mars bar differs from that sold in the US.[10] The American version was discontinued in 2002[11] and was replaced with the slightly different Snickers Almond featuring nougat, almonds, and a milk chocolate coating.
Unlike the American Mars bar, however, Snickers Almond also contains caramel.[11] The US version of the Mars bar was relaunched in January 2010 and was initially being sold on an exclusive basis through Walmart stores. The European version of the Mars bar is also sold in some United States grocery stores.
The US version was once again discontinued at the end of 2011.[citation needed]. In September 2017, Ethel M Chocolates, a gourmet chocolate subsidiary of Mars, Inc. launched the 'original American recipe' of the Mars Bar in their stores and on Amazon.com.[12][13]

That's an awful lot of history that a very dedicated fan put together :-p

Hmmmmm, Why am I humming Rammstein's "America" right now?

3:09 PM
Well, I can cross "Scrabble" off of my list of things to get for Christmas. It seems I always get the last word as it is.

@TheSnarkKnight That doesn't necessarily mean you'll win. :P That depends on your score :P

There are days where I wish I could draw cartoons

@Magisch Why? I think that's pretty easy, xkcd just used stick figures :P
I can do that too :P
(That's the first drawing from my new drawing tablet... I still need time to figure out how that one is supposed to work :P )
But back to you, what would you draw?

@Magisch well then, maybe people need to revise their views on how fifteen year olds sound ;)

3:32 PM
@Tinkeringbell they're thinking of making a special German edition of scrabble, but the gameboard is eight feet by eight feet and won't fit on most tables

@TheSnarkKnight Dutch has pretty similarly long words, and we can play scrabble just fine

@TheSnarkKnight Meh, you can play German scrabble by only using prepositions

@JarkoDubbeldam Mark Twain said he read a book in German and didn't understand it until he got to the last page where he found all the verbs

Does this answer the question? interpersonal.stackexchange.com/a/7963/1599 ... I think it's about talking with the brother, not about 'doing nothing'?
Does this meta answer apply here? interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/a/2151/1599

@Tinkeringbell hmm.. it is kind of sidestepping the question as it is now
considering the stated goal is "I want to talk to him", not "I want to get him to shape up"

I think that's it... I was thinking along the lines of this answer suggesting 'do nothing' (which may be valid sometimes?)...

But it's indeed suggesting a completely other thing

Yeah, I think if they did explicitly say "You shouldn't talk to him, because..." it would at least answer to the question, but right now they only mention it as an aside at the very end

@EmC Yeah..
> The stated goal of this question is "I want to talk to him", not "I want to get him to shape up"... Answers here should respect the premise set by an OP. It's very easy to write a 'don't do this, what you need it this other thing, but that won't help the OP achieve their goal. Can you provide any advice on how to have a talk, have the brother open up? 1/2
> The rest is a nice follow up for after that talk (if that doesn't lead to the result the OP desires), but not an answer to the question the OP has right now. 2/2
I was thinking of commenting like that?
Would that work?

looks pretty good to me :)

Q: How should I handle people being upset over their presents?

daze413Time for a holiday-themed question. I lead a small online group in an MMORPG. For the holidays, we decided to exchange gifts ala Secret Santa. As leader, I took it upon myself to organize the whole thing. We agreed on a budget, drew lots, setup a wishlist so people can get the item they want, a...

interpersonal.stackexchange.com/a/7965/1599 NAA? OP specifically states they want to talk to the gifter. This is the easy way out IMO?

@Tinkeringbell why?

@Tinkeringbell what do you see that I'm missing?

> I want to communicate to the gift-giver that they should at least give something near the budget, but I'm not sure how to: do I tell him that the recipient got upset? How do I tell him to send something more appropriate (up to budget), without upsetting him, too?
I want to communicate to the gift giver.
Not 'I want to communicate to the recipient'
So, it's either NAA, or VLQ (for not respecting the OP's request)

@Tinkeringbell I would not say anything to the giver. He gave what he thought was appropriate according to the rules/social expectations that he was aware of. -- Answer + Reasoning.

A: Why was another one of my answers deleted?

HDE 226868I don't particularly like answers that say "There's no interpersonal solution here." Two points spring to mind: It's very, very hard to show that there's no interpersonal solution to an interpersonal problem. It's very, very easy to claim that there isn't and then write a non-IPS answer. Prob...

I think that applies here too, the answer is very 'easy' to say....

NVZ
@Tinkeringbell that's not relevant here.

Is though:
It's very, very hard to show that there's no interpersonal solution to an interpersonal problem.
It's very, very easy to claim that there isn't and then write a non-IPS answer.

It does give an IPS explanation as to why "not speaking" to the giver is the wise option.

It's also very very easy to claim there is no way to talk to the gifter and then write an answer to another question?

NVZ
@Tinkeringbell there is a way, but the way given is to not approach them about it for the given reason.

We allow frame challenges.

@apaul yeah. i want the wisdom of the community to correct my course if i'm on the wrong track rather than give me nitrous and boost in the wrong direction.
i understand that we want to "respect the OP's premise". But OP is just one soul. A human soul. A human error-prone soul. The community is all-knowing, all-wise. The community shall guide the OPs, not be their yes-mens.

@apaul Hmmm.. but is this really a frame-challenge? It's not explaining to the OP why such a talk will definitely make the gifter upset. It's only saying this user was withing the rules, something the OP already knows and acknowledges!

eh, I am leaning towards this one being okay because he explains why not to say anything to the giver this time, but gives a suggestion for how to communicate in the future (set a min/max) to avoid a repeat

@Tinkeringbell I didn't say it was a good answer ;)

Well... here goes 45 minutes of work down the drain then! interpersonal.stackexchange.com/a/7967/1599

@Tinkeringbell I was just thinking that you can downvote something without needing to delete it...

NVZ
@Tinkeringbell NAA flags are supposed to be reserved for those that aren't answers at all. You can just go ahead and downvote anything you disagree with instead.

hum
another NLN flag declined

NVZ
4:48 PM
@JarkoDubbeldam NLN?

no longer needed

NVZ
@JarkoDubbeldam which was?

Judging from the age of the flag, this comment
Dojos are like the number one business that fails. If they're making money doing that, then they must be doing something right. — Mazura yesterday
But I'm not sure, since the flag overview doesn't show that

NVZ
@JarkoDubbeldam why flag that?

Because it does nothing. It just comments on the situation, with no purpose

4:53 PM
@JarkoDubbeldam wouldn't too-chatty be more appropriate then?

It's so annoying you can't see which comment flag was declined... Makes it really hard to follow up on declined flags

NVZ
@apaul all such flags are combined into NLNs.

@apaul that falls under NLN

@apaul NLN fits

but seeing as everything generally is bunched under NLN, I might just start out typing custom flags, because this doesn't seem to be working

4:55 PM
lol ok everyone

NVZ
i used to hate SE for making a dozen different comment flags, where I had to put more effort choosing the right comment flag than the commenter had to put commenting.

@JarkoDubbeldam There's also zero indication that the new business is a dojo...

> My Tae Kwon-Do instructor is looking to make a little extra money on the side.

That doesn't say anything about it being a dojo... only how the OP knows the guy.

maybe that's what is causing people to assume

4:59 PM
I usually flag the post when comments need purging, rather than flagging individual comments. If it's a single comment I usually ignore it if it isn't rude or an answer.
