worst time to buy iPhone ever
(Conversation starter #534523)
06:59
yo!
get em while theyre hot before apple now being a regular company starts doing HP like bullshit
I'm more of an Android kind of guy
i'm more of a non phone kind of guy
yeah, I guess it's not very useful when travelling that much
but sooner or later i will want a computer-in-your-pocket with something like google maps
or just buy a decent GPS and be done about it
07:03
i still don't understand all that roaming and dataplan stuff
it's freaking expensive
from memory, in Europe my operator wanted to charge me ~5 EUR for every 10 MB traffic
even at home it's a blingtoy for rick iKids
of course everybody is a rich iKid except me
yeah, but they don't get to travel around the world, do they?
07:16
i was inspired by the winter clothes question
they think i'm lucky i think they waste their money on shiny

Q: Will I need to take special precautions for spending the winter in Tbilisi, Georgia?

hippietrailI'm on my way to Tbilisi Georgia where I plan to stay all winter and since I'm from a warm country I'd like to know how cold it will get and whether I will need to invest in some winter clothing and gear. I'm from Australia but I've travelled a lot with winters in Western Europe, USA, and Canada...

07:28
yeah android guy
cool
i think i want to wait to see if any one 7 inch tablet succeeds
current netbooks and Ipads too big, phones too small
I'm hearing good things about those Samsung Galaxy Tab's, and they seem to be the right size, but unfortunately it's a little bit too pricey
as in "almost as expensive as an iCrap^H^H^H^^H Pad"
lots of litigation needs to die down and the atmosphere normalize. there's also the amazon thing
yeah, but I'm not sure how useful it would be in countries which Amazon doesn't support (which is pretty much any outside the US)
besides, even if there is some restriction on the device and it gets outright banned, you can still install third-party Android package, which is often superior to the stock software
07:45
really? the previous non tabletty kindles were in australia
yeah but it seems a highly 3rd party based device isn't going to reach critical mass
i suppose i'm looking for something between current iShiny and current &roid
clearly you are in the market for a Windows Phone /sarcasm
yeah, I heard they recently gained copy/paste ability
even my age-old Nokia had that four years ago
timeout for Friday cake!
just copy ought to be enough for anybody
yes please
oh dear.. it was gone by the time I got to the kitchen.. vultures!
are you staying the whole winter in Georgia?
07:55
that's the plan more or less
there may be a side trip to kuwait but that may be before or after winter
08:08
only this far to go: maps.google.com.au/…
that's less than 30 days cycling
but seriously, how do you plan to get there?
my shoes aren't worn out yet... but i do need to wash my socks
actually i'm not happy with that route, seems to have some backtracking the way i came
there was this old Soviet joke that I know remember.. do you know the Soviet "heroes" Chapai & Petka?
anyway, so Chapai goes one day to Petka and asks:
- Petka, can I borrow your socks, because mine broke?
- Sure, there they are, leaning on the wall
mine are like that (-:
I figured :-)
but surely they sell socks in Albania dirt cheap
in Bulgaria you can buy them by the dozen for a few $ -- provided you look at the right places
which would be open-air markets and bazaars
08:19
well i have quite enough it's just laundry time, everything else needs be washed. i need jeans though and i think my shorts might only last a few more hours
i don't know the correct balkan method for shopping for pants in open air markets
there's the dual problems of "no changing room" and "my wallet was in my pocket before"
ah, indeed
i really really want to ask a question about how to buy a cheap tent again but i got in trouble last time!
actually it either didn't quite get closed or got opened again
sometimes they do, though.. if they have these third-world cardboard/sheet metal huts with tight nooks and crannies in between, you can get dressed without exposing too much your delicate Western-ese regions to the scrutiny of the locals
but shoplifting could be a real problem, especially in crowded places. I developed something of an obsession which is still with me -- checking your pockets and your hands often if all your belongings are in place
yeah i have the touch pockets regularly approach
exactly
what's a word for "put something in between other two things so that no wind/water, etc. can go through"? google translate is not very helpful

Q: Is it easier and/or cheaper to replace my lost tent in Albania or Greece?

hippietrailWhen travel.SE was shiny and new I asked a very similar question which became a point of controversy but in the end it has remained open and thought to be on-topic under the circumstances. Sadly I left the tent I bought in Bulgaria in the van of some guys I travelled with for a couple of days. H...

cover? proects? waterproof? layer? sandwich?
yeah, kind of what I was looking for, but I got around it

A: Winter apparel for Europe Nov - Dec 11

mindcorrosiveAs the others have already said, this jacket will not be enough. The temperature ranges you cite do not reflect the fact that temperatures routinely go below zero at night, and that in presence of strong winds (especially in coastal regions), the FeelsLike® temperatures would be 5-10 degrees lowe...

for the discerning cold-loving fashionista
First I saw this question I thought he is kidding
but then i realized that if you've never experienced temperatures under 20 degrees you really don't know
I think it's a good question.. which kind of gives me an idea for a question like "What metheorological conditions I need to consider when travelling to a country with different climate than mine?"
even if you have it's hard to know. i live in pretty constant 20s but i've experienced from -40 to +47 and it doesn't help me know what to get for winter in georgia
because he apparently looked only at the temperatures
08:43
i in fact know that just looking at temp isn't enough but i don't know how to factor everything together including wind/rain/snow/humidity
especially wind
winter in calgary canada was perfect and mostly -20, winter in edmonton was painful torture
it can become very very cold if it is windy in winter :D
08:44
tell me about it.. I've been in Stockholm for a few days last winter -- and lived to tell the story
even wind depends on the place. in calgary the wind always raises the temperature noticibly in edmonton it makes you dead
08:56
maybe i'm alone in thinking this was the dumbest advice i've seen on travel.SE
> The best way to handle an arrest in a foreign country is to prevent it. Even in a "civilized" country, the arrest of an alien is a real mess. – xpda yesterday
downvote and/or comment
i did and he did (-:
it was just a comment not an answer
yay flame wars!
i have to take a look at that question. never saw this answer
we could answer every question "You can avoid this problem by not travelling"
08:58
btw does anybody now how to make brackets on a apple keyboard using windows?
use these free of charge: [ ] :-)
not an answer but jeez

Q: What should you do if you get arrested in a foreign country?

Mark MayoIf a traveller - for whatever reason, is arrested on charges (valid or otherwise), what steps should he/she take to ensure their safety, legal aid and security? How can one make sure your family and country knows about the situation? What if you don't understand the language, or what the charges ...

thanks martin
or don't use an apple keyboard
but its not a long term solution ;)
08:59
or don't use windows
i have to use it
or "don't use a computer"
problems magically disappear if you choose to ignore them
08:59
works for a lot of people
or don't write things that require brackets
hey is about the city, the state, or both?
I'd say the state.. the city should be
it's all very confusing, since NYC is not in NY, and Washington is not in WA
i was thinking in speech it's usually the other way around, people say "new york state" and mean the city otherwise
i think we should probably split and/or rename the tag
i also think we should move to now that we also have
perhaps we could have a suffix after each city, state, prefecture or location in a country, to avoid confusion with similarly named regions
e.g. there's a town of Stockholm in US
this will also discipline the tags, and will make search by tag easier
if you want to get all cities in a specific country
i prefer the pragmatic approach of split off the london ontario tag when some questions actually get asked
09:08
true, but there should be some consistency in doing that when the time comes
keep in mind that tags have an upper length limit and you might not find one consistent system that works across the board
for the us you can append the 2-letter state code but that only works for the us... maybe canada too i'm not sure
why is there no accent or diacritic on the "d" in "Łódź"?

Q: What meteorological conditions I need to consider when travelling to a new place?

mindcorrosiveIt's always difficult to decide what clothes to take with you when you go to a new place. Usually I check Wikipedia to get an idea of approximate climate and weather conditions, but it often doesn't have much data besides average temperatures. Other factors, such as wind and precipitation, might ...

anyone use the tag? can you suggest it to be a synonym of the newer tag? assuming you agree on the direction of course
for me they are pretty much the same thing, and I prefer
hmm i'm not sure that will work due to being too broad or you've probably covered all the possibilities in your question
09:18
Yeah, I kind of feel it is, too -- but suggestions for improvement are welcome
i think mobile phone is more universal that cellphone but i may be wrong. in any case they are the same thing but i can't suggest a synonym because i haven't asked or answered any phone questions
let's have a look
is a synonym to ?
lecugicalpa just seems a better tag than tegucigalpa-hn
did you mean to do that or did the software outsmart you?
no, it's the other way around
seems both and are applied haphazardly, and two questions actually have both
i gave you a big fat comment rather than an aswer
i applied mobile phone haphazardly just to enable the suggest synonym system to be usable
i got the feeling that at least one question the OP was hunting for a "mobile" tag and chose the wrong one instead of considering cellphone
remember the "normal" system for tag synonyms is that both are used for a while then somebody spots and merges them. in baby SEs like ours there is the non normal system of bringing it up in meta and getting a diamond to do it.
09:26
but can't non-mods suggest tag synonyms that can be voted for?
yay new SE podcast!
my hostel owner seems to think buying a tent is not really an option and that it would be too expensive on corfu but when i ask him about greece i don't get a rational answer.... this is the balkans (-:
you need so many points in a tag to suggest and i don't ask or answer phone questions
ahh, I see.. I thought only rep is sufficient
ah it's the perfect day for sitting around on the net and doing any cultural shit
becuase it's raining!

it must be the weekend it's so quiet

how is this even a travel question?

Q: Which area is London's Wentworth Street based?

KeeperI got an IT position offer in London. The offer sounds quite good, so I'm seriously considering accepting it and moving there. The company info says it is based on the Wenthworth Street. What kind of area is it? Are there lots of IT companies? Is it an eastern part of London and how do you call ...

21:09
i just created a tag, lots of winter questions the past few days
@MarkMayo: some of your addittions might belong better on my new question ... but i'm not sure
