12:02 AM
no, no, a dog. much better.
or perhaps a penguin, Tux-style.

Hehheh we do seem rather penguin-heavy here :)

We can't use it because of © but the idea...

I wonder if I could convince a student to make us a teacher-y penguin
Or a ... red panda ...

Don't think panda's are very good for educational ideals
Red pandas prefer to skip school, and leave campus when they can :D

12:21 AM
Been away from chat the past couple days. Wasn't loading right at school. Trying to get caught up now
Thanks for the congrats

There's our new panda, giant at that :)

That is I
Did a demo of pixel art today with Processing, so I made this
Figured it'd be a good icon to use
As a mod, I needed a real image rather than something generic

@Peter True enough

12:43 AM
I'm impressed by the number of animal icons - it seems like there's tons.
maybe i should change my rocket =P

For the longest time I thought the rocket was an oil lamp flame :/

I see what you all mean. Maybe I should change mine to, like, an alto clef or something.

@GypsySpellweaver that's what everyone thinks =)

Oh wait... it's not?????

@BenI. Look at the profile page and you can see the larger version, It is a rocket after all

12:53 AM
@Gilles I apologize for migrating a question to cs without asking you guys first.
It was literally my first actual mod action... please forgive me!!
I thought I'd checked out the procedure, only to do it and find out that I had missed an important step :P

@BenI. I think thesecretmaster probably made a bad migration as well.

He did?
@thesecretmaster What did you migrate?

I think so, we can wait and see.
Nope, I got it wrong. It is the one you migrated, that he re-opened.

That's backwards. He re-opened, and then I migrated

12:58 AM
Once it migrated, he wouldn't have access to change it any more!

When I saw the post about migration I was going to say something, but figure in this case experience was a good teacher.
Most sites, the more established the more so, appreciate migrations of only good questions. Even if it is on-topic there, a low quality post is still low quality.

In that case, a better move is to suggest OP post there themselves?

That's usually best. With an extra warning to avoid cross-posting as well
But, to suggest a different site, it helps to be sure it really is on-topic, or else we end up alienating the user by starting a wild-goose chase
Not saying this one is off-topic there, because I have no clue of their topic guidelines.
Just a general idea.

It's not off-topic there - it's just a poor-quality post
Until this place started, cs.SE was my home on stackexchange (to the extent that I had one at all)
And I have my highest other score there.. something in the 600s

I'm given to understand that mods try to help each other out, especially the newly minted ones.
If nothing else, excluding this question, you may try going to a sites main chat and find a mod, ask them to review the questionable post. They can say migrate if they like it, or post a comment suggesting the reasking to the OP

1:07 AM
In my experience with Gilles to date, he is somewhat direct, but also fair, and has an extremely dry sense of humor. At least, that's how it comes off to me

I do suspect that, once we're a graduated site, CompSci and Theoretical CompSci will become two of our primary migration targets. Possibly MathEd as well.

cs50, possibly, as well

Not so sure about cs50...the questions there are all from students and they are very specific to each problem set

Fair 'nuff
We might get an occasional SO migration as well
How can I teach what is wrong with this code

Well... That's good to know. And that increases the likely hood of it being a target. Possible that we get students here, and that might be a transfer point.

1:12 AM
Speaking of migrations...this feels borderline, but I'm not sure where else - if anywhere - it'd go

Q: Overcoming a friend's self-discouragement

checkersquaresBefore I turned 19 I just kind of... fell into coding. I used to think programming was something incredibly hard that only child prodigies and people with a 160+ IQ could do. (A view often reinforced by Hollywood stereotypes.) And I thought that I just wasn't smart enough. Since getting into pro...

Quid suggested that an analogous question would be welcome on matheducators, so I am inclined to think that it belongs here

I'm not versed in the SE-verse, but I don't know where to send the OP with that one.

(While you were away, I called Quid into this room and we discussed that question at length)

That he did. See it myself.

gotcha
i missed that in the transcript

1:13 AM
He said that the question could be criticized, and could probably use some modification for the backstory part, but that in general, something like it would be welcome there.

thanks for clarifying

He also said that they have an tag that would apply in posts like those

there's the career-prep side of teaching
so in that sense opening students up to consider the path of cs is relevant

It's true
IMO "Is this career choice right for me" has a place here, as long as they can make the ask specific enough.
(In case it's not clear, I am speaking as a community member here, not a mod)

me as well

1:16 AM
At least for now, I think the three of you can remain users in chat. Exception being when dealing with a new-to-chat user.

It's such a small core community in the first place
I just don't want anyone to feel like they can't disagree with me. I'm no decider of what is on-topic unless it is blatantly obvious

And rarely do non-core visit here. Though they do float through.
From what I've seen on other sites, that's not a problem. Many meta posts have been seen that question the actions of a site mod. And, on occasion I've seen the same in the Super User chat room as well.

I hope that tradition will continue here.
Viva la resistance!

On the other hand, I hope it never happens that a user is dissatisfied with our mods' actions.

I hope it does happen. It'll be a good lesson in accountability for us mods.

1:26 AM
Two of three have already had an oops moment. Let's see how long before the last one does.

:)

Peter is far more careful.

It'll come at some point

Well here's one for @Peter to use when he has the need:

I like it

1:36 AM
Peter will find a way to use a screwdriver.

Not to have @BenI. feeling left out, I got one for him too:

Mine glows magical blue :)

Or, maybe it's a musical blue
You know, blue notes :)

DIAMONDS and HAMMERS!
I have neither.
:(

I figure that with the power of the mod hammer, nothing short of Thor's hammer would do.

1:40 AM
I don't even have a badge that says RO.
I think @Aurora0001 is referring something that is not really a rule but is done sometimes.

Here, @HenryWHHackv2.0, take this hammer:

@BenI. Thank You! :)

+1 Henry :)

whatever it is.

It's the biggest hammer I've ever seen.

1:45 AM
Oh
right

BTW The RO for the question help room has been handed over as well. thesecretmaster has already set up camp there, and, of course, Ben never left.

It's true :P

I am going to protest about losing my RO access. (It's not anything bad just a peaceful protest.)

Why protest? You gave it up willingly.

evidence?

1:51 AM
I was here when you did it, and read the conversation between you and Aurora?

I gave it up on request of @Aurora0001

gave it up yes, evidence:
willingly? Maybe a bit of persuasion was involved:/

If I refused he would of removed it him self so I had noting to do but hear and obey.
One day I am going to be a CM and Dev at SE!

I don't think he could, could he? Even with a diamond?

Yes he could
I am thinking big.
Maybe I am thinking to big.

1:55 AM
@HenryWHHackv2.0 Somehow I think you might have to choose between the two. Doubt that being either one leaves much time or energy for the other.
You might like CM better, I'd prever Dev.

I like the Dev part.
AdamLear ♦ Is not in the room where I ask him my questions.
He got smart and figured out I was going to bother him all the time so he left.

Not necessarily. Maybe he just had to do other things. Like reboot the computer.

Well that's a long reboot.
Like long!
Maybe he came back

Folks, I think I'm heading to bed.
The site is growing up!
But I think we only got 1 question today :(

And daddy needs his rest.

2:01 AM
I am off for a bit as well
Until tomorrow!

Do you guys think that we should adopt [mathstackexchange.SE]'s ? It would fit well for this post

He's not in.

Uh oh, the parents are gone and the kids are alone. ...XD

Settle down kiddies

BenI. Has 6663 reps in total! :O

2:02 AM
oops forgot one.

How did your message bounced up before mine which was already posted?

Faster internet?

@HenryWHHackv2.0 If you're mean to me, you hurt my feelings. Not as a mod, but as a person.

What is your Internet speed?
@BenI. not you.

2:04 AM
IDK

You don't know your Internet speed?
holly mods
I don't believe it.

@HenryWHHackv2.0 What do you mean? You said that I had 666 rep.
When you say things like that, it hurts my feelings.

Evil number
@BenI. Nothing really

I know the reference. That's how it hurt my feelings. You see? :(

I have a 45 Mbps down and a 5 Mbps up.
Oh sorry.

2:07 AM
That's okay. Thanks for apologizing.
I hope you don't think I've ever been mean to you. I try to be nice to people.

I thought most of you guys here didn't believe in god or the bible.
Ok

Ethernet vs Wifi?
I use wifi mostly.
@edcharlie Welcome! :)

@HenryWHHackv2.0 that was on Ethernet
Here it is from wifi

2:21 AM

This is in Mbps the other was in Kbps.
I rather Mbps.
or MBps

MB = "MEGA BYTE" and Mb = "MEGA bit" i know a lot of guys confuse those. internet speed nowadays is calculated in Mbps; do you know that google fiber provide 1Gbps speed.

I know theres a difference between b and B. ;)
Also I knew about Google Fiber proving speeds up to 1Gbps.
I think.
Who here uses Google Fiber?

I wish I did. It would justify the gigabit copper and router I have.

I want to have a high internet speed for no reason.

2:32 AM
I probably couldn't afford it if it was here anyway :(
I guess I shouldn't complain. I still remember when 28K was a pipe dream.

Yep
People today are looking at 28K as a crappy internet speed.
But sometime in the future people will be looking at 1Gbps as a crappy internet speed.

How would you like to use 110 baud?

it is a modem that is so slow

In telecommunication and electronics, baud (, unit symbol Bd) is the unit for symbol rate or modulation rate in symbols per second or pulses per second. It is the number of distinct symbol changes (signaling events) made to the transmission medium per second in a digitally modulated signal or a line code. Digital data modem manufacturers commonly define the baud as the modulation rate of data transmission and express it as bits per second. Baud is related to gross bit rate expressed as bits per second. == Definitions == The symbol duration time, also known as unit interval, can be directly measured...

2:36 AM
I have a combo device.

That gets about 10 characters per second on a text display.

speed of 110 baud is 0.11 kbit/s from wiki

It's a modem and router in one provided by my ISP. (Sad)
@edcharlie wiki?

I had one of those. Lease was to much, so I got my own pair.

wikipedia

2:38 AM
oh

When I was first online 110 baud was what we had. Later we got 300 baud with a television as a VDT.

here is a funny chat post from me:
in Ask Ubuntu General Room, Apr 27 '16 at 0:28, by Henry White Hat Hacker
@Zacharee1 Because I am hosting my own isp to make money to pay my isp.

Too meta

2:43 AM
Where's linux?

Penguin behind the Debian standard

If you look carefully to the back.

I see BSD too, what's the egg in front?

You will see Aurora0001 a penguin.

Oh, I see.
Why does rasbien get color? It's no fair.

2:46 AM
@thesecretmaster What makes it Rasbien? Looks like plain old Debian to me?

to host his isp he need a DHCP server and a lot of configuration how is this even possible? modem are known to have lots of vulnerabilities some allow you to use internet for free.

So the FOSS OSes are throwing Windows and Mac off the cliff.

@GypsySpellweaver Oh, could be. I'm not the best at distro logo idendification

@edcharlie It's a joke really.

I don't know what the first one is, nor the last two.
The first one could be an egg, not sure. Then a moose and maybe a Native American?

2:48 AM
Going off the cliff we have Windows and Mac

Well, of course. They stink (sent from a mac)

Nope, last is the Tux penguin seated

1 IDK 2 BSD 3 IDK 4 Debian 5 GNU 6 Aurora0001 Tux

first is some other penguin, maybe Slackware?

@GypsySpellweaver Humpty Dumpty? (Don't go to close to the cliff or you'll really have a great fall.)

2:51 AM
windows can activate airplane mode and fly

Not for long though.

Then it crashes into the blue sky of death.

Windows has a new safety feature:

Windows S?

2:55 AM
@GypsySpellweaver LOL
I wonder if I can restar what I unstarred.
I can
This^ is how it looks like when you are ignoring not not ignoring all the tags on a SE site at the same time.

what about mac he is the one to hit the ground first

Newtonian physics I guess.

mac is a waste of money instead you can buy a gaming pc and everyone loses their minds

3:47 AM
I AM HERE!
@GypsySpellweaver Don't forget the meeting. ;)

I'm still looking for the egg looking thing, penguin I think, from that picture.
Going through DistroWatch, one by one.

Let me pin it so you will remember where the picture is.
Oh I can't
Well I can still star.

I got it in another tab anyway

full size instead of tiny here

3:52 AM
yep
Also but your web browser in full screen to get a bigger experience.

I know I've seen that somewhere, but I just don't know where. Could even be something other than a distro
I get a great experience. running at 1920x1200 :)
Now all the monitors only want to go 1920x1080 :(
Got a 1280x1024 on the side for monitoring things so I don't waste desktop space for tell tales.

The third one seems familiar.
Maybe it's the Arch Linux logo with hands and feet.

There's full screen

I have mines full screen and zoomed in.

That is full size

3:59 AM
Ok

can't go full-screen in browser and get both screens. It'll only do one screen:(
If I stretch the window to all monitors, and set the image to full-size, this is what I get
Welp, It's not letting me upload :(, try again

Had to change it to a jpg from png
Wonder what the file size limit is for imgur?

I don't know.

The png is 472KiB the jpg is only 365.1KiB, so if that was the problem, it must be around 400 or 450

4:09 AM
Did you figure it out?

Not interested enough to test it. I'm sure it's in their docs somewhere. I'll just have to remember that there is a limit somewhere.

No I mean about the logo.

Nope. It's a looooong list.

Ok I was saving this so I won't spoil the fun.
I created that image.

Kali has a nice dragon though :)

4:13 AM
Ok not really I didn't create that.

I think I need to check out edubuntu, looks promising.

2 hours later…
5:50 AM
Hello

Wow, I'm so happy about the mod selection, and the a51 statistics thing.
we have 1700 views per day!

Growing steady

I'll be honest, I was a bit crestfallen when I didn't get picked, but 30 mins later I saw that it was a better choice, all around. And now it's back to the asking questions, answering questions and attacking the review queue :P

I was a tad myself. But I didn't really think I would because my education arena experience is very outdated.

5:56 AM
I suppose I lacked the active initiative in meta. But as I said, I can already see that the assembled trio is doing a good job.

I've also been on SE as a whole for only a few months. And the CMs aren't going to entrust a new site to someone that doesn't have much of a record for them to evaluate.

I suppose that's true...

They've got some learning to do, but I know they'll do an excellent job.

Agreed.

I've only been on SE for 5 months. Joined Unix & Linux on Dec 29th last year.

6:00 AM
I've been on SO for 3 years... But my activity only really kicked in on oct. of last year...
reading a blogpost when suddenly Jeff's mentioned XD. here.

6:13 AM
NOTE: Drive spreadsheet updated.

Apparently heather didn't make note of the ones already edited.

Which are those?

Checking, but looks like it's the first 11 on the list

Oh dear. Internet security again. The same question. I wonder if the dup hammer should be invoked...

6:31 AM
Where did the other one go?

closed and deleted by system

Then can't dupe, nothing to link to.

exactly.

7:00 AM
Ok, updated. Added ** to the number of answers if it has an accepted answer as well.

Good call

I also changed the "Current tags" column to reflect the new status, leaving the suggested as is

Cool.

She also added and and to some and added a couple language tags, and other "improvements"
I see you've joined the sheet. I'm the alligator.

I'm not anonymous, I think...

7:06 AM
The creator can't be

Makes sense

That's why Touring Tux didn't want to make a sheet for his beta data digest
Can I grant other people "Create" privileges to a folder on my Google Drive?

oh. Well I really don't care about using my "true" identity. I got nothing to hide.
@GypsySpellweaver pretty sure you can...

@ItamarGreen Ok I've created a folder on my Drive, and it has a photo in it. The folder should be here. See if you can add something, anything, and if you can delete the photo.

yep. The options are there...
Useful.
I moved the tag purge into that.

7:21 AM
Now that you've done that, can you move it again, to a different account?

what do you mean?

That's my normal account, and might have limited space.
I have a different account with zero in it for now
It's here
I see it :)
Do you know of a reliable link shortener? One that we could use to make a decent link to that with?

tinyurl

Cool. Now we have a site-based folder for things we need to share other than images, which imgur handles nicely.

7:49 AM
Cool. I'm learning. Now I know how to move from one Drive to another Drive! :D

And, it looked like you were anonymous in there too.
