i believe that will end up replacing a decent number of the tags

Has anyone found a good working definition of yet? My search has failed to dig up anything useful.

from what i can tell, it's a fairly standard introductory class at the undergrad level.
> Thirty-one years ago, the ACM Computing Curricula used the terms "CS1" and "CS2" to designate the first two two courses in the introductory sequence of a computer science major. While computer science education has greatly changed since that time, we still refer to introduction to programming courses as CS1 and basic data structures courses as CS2. - this paper
> while there is wide agreement on the connotation of CS1 and CS2, there is little agreement as to the denotation of these terms - same paper

Yea, that's part of the problem.
You can read the whole paper, not the abstract, here: drive.google.com/open?id=0B9XEw3a3QXDJbjNnMnRqREd0Q0U
And, from our own site:
-1
Q: What language is used for CS1 (Introductory Programming) at your institution?

Brett BeckerThe age-old question strikes again! I'm not asking for what is best, just what is currently used for intro to programming for CS majors, at university/college level. If you don't mind it would be interesting if you could include your institution's name also, but understand if you don't want that ...

skimming that paper, now i'm doubting whether or not we should create those tags!
(thanks for the link, by the way)

Knew we were going to need it, so I put it on Drive

12:10 AM
is there a current meta post on this issue, or should i write one?

I think a meta post might be helpful, but not sure it'd fly. There's already some posts that relate.

Q: Suitable age range tags

Sean HoulihaneWhat is the best way of tagging questions to identify the combination of experience level and age range which a question is focused on? Ideally in a way which will be internationally relevant?

Q: Adding education level tags?

AlGIn browsing the site today I noticed a number of questions where the first comment was "what level of education" (or similar). We should add tags to help answer that question and further categorize the question. We'd have to come up with something that was culture agnostic (E.g. US folks may no...

Well, we've got 2 questions on the HNQ list.

we do?
i see "how important is learning binary"

12:32 AM
I ended up posting an answer to that first meta question here that I hope summarizes the problem decently well.

12:50 AM
@Aurora0001 unfortunately, it isn't really...see this

1:18 AM
That paper was very persuasive.

I don't like half-facts, or abstracts. And I really don't like paywalls.
I'd rather have no facts than half facts.

Patience is always advised.

You are wiser than I, sir. And older, too. Sometimes, those two are even linked.
Speaking of non-sequiters... !
(We were, yes?)
A wonderful bit of wisdom comes from Mr. Emo Phillips:
"A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing."

lol
Here's an interesting factoid for you. When you edit someones question or answer, you are added to the list of people who get automatic notification of comments, and your name won't show up for tab-completion with the @ name syntax.

2:22 AM
Huh.
That is an interesting factoid

Well, actually the name will show up, but I think it's stripped out before the comment is committed to the page.

I'll bear that in mind.

I guess the theory is that if you cared enough to edit it, you probably want to know about comments and answers too.
Of course, if the comment gets deleted before you respond to the ping in your inbox, the line in the inbox is also deleted, and you'd never know it happened.

That makes sense

It's amazing the amount of work, and functionality, that's hidden behind the nice user interface they've developed here.
I wouldn't even be surprised to learn that some of the dev team don't know everything that it can do. :/

2:39 AM
I would be shocked if they did. I can barely keep track of code that I wrote three days ago, let alone code that a team of other people created 6 years ago.

Are you on a reliably powered system now?

... ish
Also, I'm heading to bed shortly.
I was barely able to keep up with the site today. I take that as a good sign - our baby is growing up!

I think I'll try my hand at the idea of encouraging best practices in student works.

Oh - that explains why today felt so breakneck. Our visitors/day doubled today.

Once they've seen gay Paris, how can you keep them on the farm?
Last check we still had two HNQs

2:45 AM
None of us have access to check the 90% from search engines metric yet, though I think it's safe to assume that that is not happening yet
I imagine we're getting virtually all of the activity from HNQs

Did you notice that Alfred Thompson has joined us?

@BenI. Yeah, we can also check quantcast

Good point

@GypsySpellweaver who is that?

I did. Exciting, right?

Oooooo

What he modestly leaves out of his profile is that he's also a former Microsoft employee.

Oooooooooooooooooo

Getting him to join SE just to join us is really neat :D

He's been getting a fair number of upvotes from me
So far, I believe it would be one upvote per post.
And I've learned a few really neat classroom ideas already from him!

3:01 AM
It would be wonderful to get him as a mod. But I know he don't have the time. He is supposedly retired. but you couldn't tell. He even does speaking engagements.
For what it's worth, the CS2013 .org in his profile is part of the continuation of the CS1/CS2 that started decades ago. (The paper that's been linked in here a couple times)

This is always a quiet period on the site, and then I go to bed, wake up 6 hours later, and there will have been 200 messages on this chat, 3 new questions, 6 comments/notifications for me, 6 first posts, and 8 suggested edits.

See what happens when you live in the wrong timezone.
51 to choose from, and this is the one you picked. ;P

Also, Gypsy never sleeps :)

It just looks that way.
With all the cats in this house, I have to do my best to protect the mouse.

3:17 AM
Perhaps when you sleep, the cats come and type sardonic things?

I secure the kbd when I'm not in control of it.
Though, on occasion, one will still do some typing from my lap.

That's adorable :)
I'm more of a dog person myself, but I appreciate cats from time to time
I think I'm off to bed - have a great night

Good luck ;P

1 hour later…
4:45 AM
Just got caught up on the day. Didn't have much of a free moment at all today. I should tomorrow though. Such great signs of growth!

Most excellent, Dude.

Now I need to put together some answers to some good questions

6 hours later…

The help center is useless for what is "on topic"

Q: Help center might need a few additions

Itamar GreenNow that we're in public beta, it might be a good time to think about expanding parts of the help center. For example the what's on topic page isn't as helpful to new users as it can be. Additionally, the text here: (The above section was adapted from MetaFilter’s FAQ.) that suggests that...

1:00 PM
Oh, thanks

2 hours later…
3:00 PM
I don't really know how to encourage more questions on the site, other than trying to reach out to new users
I don't know that we'll ever get to 10

@BenI., I think it will increase with time.
Just a thought I had - should we create tags like , , , etc?
(there's precedent for that - think academia.SE)

3:40 PM
We may see an uptick in questions once AP trainings kick in and more teachers prep for the school year in August

3:55 PM

Q: Area 51 Statistics

heather Let's go through this from best to worst: 100% answered - excellent: Need I say more? We've answered every question. Around 4.2 answers a question - excellent. So we're kind of rocking the answers. 48 avid users, 1,255 total users - okay (on pace for 80 200+ rep users, 3 2000+, and 3 3000+)....

The Bioinformatics.SE moderators has been selected isn't that great?

Q: Please welcome your pro tem moderators!

[Congrats @BenI. ,@thesecretmaster and @Peter for]: becoming a moderator on CSeducator.SE

Thanks!

Thanks!!
Craziness!!

Yep
@GypsySpellweaver Sorry dude. :(

4:36 PM
Kewl. I wasn't expecting it anyway. :)

@BenI. Try reselecting CSeducators.SE as your main chat community.

Gratz to @BenI. @Peter and @thesecretmaster

Maybe that will update his chat account.

I upvoted everyone on that page (except myself, obviously), because I would have been happy to work with any of the main people from this community.

4:38 PM
There are great people in this community

I'll always be around, but I expect that it's not too much longer before this site out grows my usefulness.

So the chat diamond will be here soon.

I Didn't upvote Peter. I wasn't allowed to.

Why?
I really thought that Gypsy Spellweaver was going to be selected.
He's such a nice guy.

4:41 PM
I couldn't upvote his nomination because it was my own post, can't upvote your own answers. :/

@HenryWHHackv2.0 Don't forget, my educational arena experience is very dated, and I'm not active in that anymore. So my SE skills might by up to par, I'm still likely to be less effective than others for this site.

Don't mean I can't still lend a hand when needed :D
Let's not overwork the new mods either. We can still do the reviews and monitor things to keep their tasks easier. They do have jobs IRL too, after all.
@Peter @thesecretmaster @BenI. Y'all now own the Question help room as promised.
Caching hasn't caught up in chat yet, but the diamonds are on posts now at least.

5:06 PM
Wow, binding votes suck.

And so ends the party :(
Now you know what it's like for Thor to drive home a small finishing nail.

@thesecretmaster Deal with it!

I will. I'll just have to be much more careful

Have to more careful in comments too. That ♦ carries a lot of weight

5:10 PM
Yep
I accidentally removed the stars on a post.

This is going to be very interesting. I don't know about the Peter and BenI., but I'll be leaning pretty heavily on this room, at least for a while.

Of course when you say "welcome" in a comment it means more too.
They should have given, or will give, you access to a mod-only chat room where you can as questions of others with more experience.

@thesecretmaster is now blue!

@heather I just saw your tag wiki edits. They're good, but you should make sure to not define what a tag is in the usage guidance. That belongs in the wiki. Just FYI, one of the rejection reasons is "lacks usage guidance - Simply defining what a [tag] is rarely helps those using it unless the tag's name itself is ambiguous. Excerpts should describe why and when a tag should be used. See the help center for more guidance."

And I've got my new suit on for the new mods :)

5:14 PM
@GypsySpellweaver You look as majestic as ever :)

Is my computer being weird, or is it everyone? Ben hasn't turned blue yet for me.

So far just you. The ♦s are on the posts now though, and in the profiles.
Caching does weird things in chat.
They may not change until they actually chat again. Never sure.
Takes a while for my ava to update in chat too. Even longer for some of the flash to update.

@BenI. Is now blue!

Had to reload for to change, and Peter's still not.

5:24 PM
He'll turn blue eventually

After holding his breath and biting his tongue enough, yea, he'll turn blue alright.

Also, just a trick: I've noticed that when we leave "welcome" comments, we usually type "CSE" or "CS Educators". There is a shortcut for our full name, which I recommend everyone use: [cseducators.se] turns into Computer Science Educators.

Does it auto convert in comments?
Or just in chat posts?

5:27 PM
@Aurora0001 Hi! :)
Our moderators are here!

Welcome @Aurora0001, in time to see the new ♦s we've got
One has even graced us with his presence in chat :)

Hi all

Hi
Now say congrats

@HenryWHHackv2.0 ;P

@GypsySpellweaver It converts in comments also.

5:29 PM
It's a joke I wasn't trying to be rude you know.

@HenryWHHackv2.0 Hate to be the one to steal your thunder, but now we have our moderators it might be best to hand over room ownership to them, as agreed.
But congratulations to our moderators

I already done that for the question room.

@Aurora0001 Ok
@Aurora0001 How about our moderators vote to keep me as RO or not.
If you want to keep me as RO say yes if not say no.

If more room owners are needed, I'm sure a meta post can be started; just seems fair to have moderators as the owners for now

5:32 PM
Ok I am removing my RO access now
Can I keep it for a bit?

@Aurora0001 Thank you

@HenryWHHackv2.0 You can always have your own room where you're a RO, but the main room probably should be given to mods. Sorry to take RO away from you, but it's the fairest way.

GoodBye to my RO access although I didn't have time to use it so long. Until whenever.

I suspect that @thesecretmaster ought to keep a regular presence in the CS Educators Question Help room as well, now that he's a living, breathing ♦mod♦.

Yes, thanks for the reminder. I'll be in all the rooms more now.

5:35 PM
@Aurora0001 You do it.
It's hard for me to do.

Thanks, @Henry.

I've still got a lot of learning about the SE'verse to do. I'm getting there though.
Now I can't wait for the panda to join us :)
I'm not the only one anymore.

6:01 PM
@GypsySpellweaver May I speak to you?
Anyone?

Or, since this is an educators' site, should I say Present.

I am feeling a little sad at the moment. (It's hard to explain but its feels bad.)
My Area51.SE proposal is still moving kind of slow.
:(
sad

6:08 PM
Slow can be good. Imagine getting the critical mass for beta, then not being able to get enough to go public.
Slow lets you build a solid foundation, and the building will survive longer.

That's why I am hosting a meeting in Weapons Discussion Center sometime.
@GypsySpellweaver Yes but two-three months to go.
Greetings Aurora0001 brother.

Congratulations on being moderators now, @thesecretmaster, @BenI and @Peter!
Hello guys

waving at the little penguin

waving back at the little... ummm... red panda?

I can't be rude to Aurora0001.

@Aurora0001 I didn't sign anything to prove that I agreed.

Q: Two answers for one question

Gypsy SpellweaverIn reviewing the answers to How can I show the value of best practices? I developed, and wrote up, an answer that I think is good. Which isn't saying that the other answers are not. Then, when I went to post it (draft written locally), I realized one of the other answers was mine. (Oops.) The new...

6:23 PM
@CSEducatorsMeta Sometimes I really hate that feed :(
Every time I go meta it ends up in here almost as fast as I do.

I just wanted to bring this meta question up:
2
Q: Area 51 Statistics

heather Let's go through this from best to worst: 100% answered - excellent: Need I say more? We've answered every question. Around 4.2 answers a question - excellent. So we're kind of rocking the answers. 48 avid users, 1,255 total users - okay (on pace for 80 200+ rep users, 3 2000+, and 3 3000+)....

Since when do we have the quality ratings on the given information (like visitor count, answer ratio)?

Every beta does.

But the "Excellent" or "Okay" ratings are rather new (they weren't there when I checked for the last time, which is probably about 3-4 days ago)
Does this have something to do with the pro-tem mod elections?

They were there, you just didn't notice them. Probably because the Big Blue Squares had your attention instead.

Then it was probably I browser bug or something like this because I've explicitely searched for them the last time I visited the page (and compared it to other betas)

6:31 PM
My error XD
they weren't always there
They were a day or two ago, but not much longer

Ah, great :)
This was also my impression.
It could also be related to the fact that CSE.SE has now been in beta for 30 days

Or, it might have switched when we got our first 3K user?

We could try asking @Aurora0001 if they return back online.

I noticed the switch when I was used to seeing how many users were in each level, then it was "on track for..."

Yes, I also saw this

6:35 PM
Now I'll have to watch the next beta launch, just to see "what's up"

Hey guys, thoughts on this post which I accidentally binding reopened?
Did I made a whoopsie, or was that that OK?

I personally think it should remain closed (and would vote to close it again if I could), but it's not worth losing any sleep over

I'd say the last comment is a good clue.

@TuringTux I think they appear at 30 days

@Aurora0001 Okay, thanks :)

6:44 PM
But, it's worth stressing: don't worry about them too much. They'll naturally grow, and staring at them too often can just make you worried. SE commits to keep all public betas alive as long as moderation is still functioning, so this site is safe. In other words: enjoy!

@Aurora0001 Encouraging, thanks

We'll do :)

@GypsySpellweaver Well, RC commented after I reopened. Oh well, not much I can do now.

I gave it a new CV

I'm just comparing some of the beta sites to CSE to provide an answer to the meta question I've linked here a few minutes ago.

6:46 PM
@TuringTux The summary report is ...?

I wonder if there are enough active close voters to close the question again now

I can close it

Can You?

It'd make for a weird history, but if this room thinks I should, I will.

@Gypsy I'm yet making my way through all the data

6:48 PM
The comment from RC is insightful, and telling.
Ben said the same thin, in a nicer way as well.

I feel like this is a pretty clear question through: "I am unsure of how to explain the difference between deterministic randomization and non-deterministic randomization using the above example."

It is clear what is being asked, just not clear that it's a CS Educator problem rather than a problem with that person's understanding

It's basically "How can I explain the difference between deterministic and non-deterministic randomization"

I can't really tell if the asker knows the difference themselves
And it's asking for a complete example from a two line prompt; seems overly broad

Soo... I've (manually) entered the statistics from the first site of proposals in beta of Area 51 in a spreadsheet.
Let's do some calculations with it \o/

6:56 PM
Could you copy it to a google sheet so we all can have a look?

I'd probably have share my real name then - I'd like to avoid this...

Oh, OK

If someone of you opens an editable sheet, I could (however) edit my values in

Could you convert to CSV and put it in pastebin?

Good idea. I'm planning to write an answer to this meta question - I'll include it as code snippet

6:59 PM
OK, thanks!

There it is, have fun ;)

A: Area 51 Statistics

TuringTuxI'm planning to do a basic comparison of some Area 51 statistics, so I've put the information of the first 15 sites in public beta into a small spreadsheet. As asked in chat, I'll provide the data as a CSV dump in a community wiki answer here. Feel free to edit in more sites or updated statistic...

I've made it community wiki so everybody can improve the data
I'll add another answer with an interpretation of mine later...

Thank you

You're welcome :)

7:26 PM
Also, now that we have mods, what do we think about starting a help center meta question?

Great idea!
I'd love to see one.
+1

OK, I'll write it up

Nice, thanks :)

Congratulations to @thesecretmaster, @BenI. And @Peter!! I only saw it now. Well done!

@thesecretmaster I'd write it up and get the discussion rolling, but might be nice to wait a little longer before filling anything in

7:32 PM
Yeah, of course. I'd wait for as near to consensus as we can get.

Consensus is difficult to sense, but giving it a couple of weeks wouldn't do any harm
2

Kewl, I just got my first "robot" challenge when posting an answer.

:D
I've now posted a basic interpretation of the site statistic comparison:
0
A: Area 51 Statistics

TuringTuxI've done some (very basic) comparsion of 15 beta sites using this data dump to find out how good our statistics are compared to the ones of other sites. Number of questions per day: We're above the average amount and in the top 3 sites. No site in the dump reaches the "Excellent" threshold tho...

I'm not a statistician though, so it's of course possible it's not very good.

I suspect that if all values reach "Excellent" the beta ends.
Can you include past data from recent graduates?

7:39 PM
It's mostly a human judgement, but the factor that SE say is most important is 10 questions/day to graduate
Low percentage answer rates, or not enough users with high rep would probably hold things up, but the 10 questions/day is the big factor

Well, answers are what sell. And you need questions to get answers.

Statistics for Stack Overflow en Español are here: area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/42810/…
They left the beta with an "okay" question number and a "needs work" answer percentage

The international SO sites are a bit special and they pretty much get a dedicated CM for their site

Quantitative Finance had only an "okay" amount of questions

I migrated the question that @thesecretmaster accidentally reopened. I figured RC's encouragement was sufficient
I haven't had time to catch up to anything yet, but when I get home tonight (and am off my darned phone) I will be reading a lot.

7:45 PM
Where did you migrate it to?

Does anyone know whether there is some API like SEDE for Area 51? I couldn't find Area 51 on SEDE.

CS

We should edit it too then, right?
Also, if it gets closed over there it comes back here :)

@Aurora0001 Do you know if there's something like SEDE for Area 51?

I don't think there is. Pretty sure someone invented an arcane way of querying multiple sites, though

7:53 PM

Oh, hi @heather

hello =)

I've provided an answer to your question on Area 51 statistics ;)
Just sayin', if you want to have a look at it or so :)
Soo... I've got to go now
See you all o/

@thesecretmaster okay, i'll go back over those! i haven't done a ton of tag wiki edits before, so that's good to know.
@Aurora0001 see you! thanks for the answer, i'm looking at it with interest =)

8:07 PM
@heather I'm guessing you pinged the wrong penguin ;)

@heather Wrong ping? Or did you mean an answer of Aurora?
@Aurora0001 :)
Okay, bye o/

Aurora, you are always the right penguin.

wrong penguin, yep =P

8:23 PM
what would your thoughts be of creating a for questions asking what background is necessary for teaching a particular topic?

Seems overboard, and potentially to localized to answer.

i've seen multiple questions it'd apply to.

Q: Making the help center more helpful

@thesecretmaster just commented =)

@heather Don't know if this is what you're doing, but we're not purging yet. (Based on your edit)

8:28 PM
I guess you only need two things: 1) Know it before you teach it, and 2) A license from the state to teach.

i was going through the edits here

Yeah, we aren't doing those yet
We were waiting for further discussion

@GypsySpellweaver oh, no, i meant for a topic someone was teaching - like what background was necessary to explain HTML to someone, or something.
@thesecretmaster i'm sorry!
i can stop making edits then.

I kinda want to approve them, but I also kinda wait to reject and wait. Thoughts?

treat them as you would if the debate wasn't happening.
do they improve the question?
was the tag necessary in the first place on that question?
are the tags added (if any) better?

8:32 PM
@thesecretmaster If you don't want them do go through, and dont' want to reject, accept and improve, then add the objected to correction

of course, it's up to you what to do.

But that's the debate. Not sure if we have enough consensus yet.

i don't mind if you reject them.

I just don't know if I should leave introductory programming on or not.
So I'm asking the room.

8:35 PM
Since I don't see it in the queue, I can't say. Judgment call on your part.

OK. I'll take them as part of the purge. And I'll add a note to the doc to not do the edits

Also @heather generally for tag purges users who don't have the editing privilege shouldn't help because it clogs the queues.

BTW @heather, have you been updating the Spreadsheet as you edit?

@thesecretmaster okay, I will stop doing them then.
@Gypsy no, I'll do so now.

1 hour later…
10:00 PM
@HenryWHHackv2.0 How do I do that?

10:14 PM
@BenI. Click on your room avatar, click on user profile, in the box about you on new page look for [change] after your name, click on that and type the new site name in the box.
Wait, it's already done.

@TuringTux Great analysis. Thank you!!
That made me feel a lot better :)

10:38 PM
I'm finally caught up on chat. Whew!

Is your head spinning now?

Yes. Yes it is, quite a lot
I have not even remotely caught up to the main site, let alone the meta, let alone the giant email that was sent to me with links to guides upon guides upon guides to being a mod

I think the email might be priority one
