Q: Story with a character called "the Haitian"?

Logan ClarkThis was somewhere in the 2008-2009 time frame. I'm pretty sure my dad gave me this book after he read it, and he read a lot of Clive Cussler-esque books (i.e., adventure possibly including sci-fi elements). The main thing I remember is that there was a scene where some characters were either wai...

Q: Manga/Manhwa/Manhua where the a girl was reincarnated as a princess and wants to live her limited life peacefully

MimiThere was a cancer patient girl who was reincarnated as a baby princess with a hourglass tattoo in hand which means she will die in 21 years or so. She was a neglected princess of a powerful king of sword in the story the girl read but after she reincarnated she tried to change her fate by making...

Q: Short story, no later than early 60s, alien (unthahorst?) finishes/abandons project, children disappear after figuring out how to manipulate toy

rwniebuhrRead this story in at least one anthology back in the 60s. I want to say it was called The Children's Hour, but that title has been way over used so it's probably just something similar.

@DavidW MHA and DiD have both caught my attention but I haven't sat down to look at either yet. I've been watching Kaiju No.8 as it comes out and we're caught up on Solo Levelling. My wife and are watching some Isekai anime as well but the proper names escape me (maybe 'Banished Hero relaxes in another world' and 'Level 2 with infinite skill' ?)
I finished Eragon which was alright at the end, but not as good as I thought people were saying it was...
I'm all caught up on Rivers of London, so I'm trying to read the comic from the Library app but there's gaps
and I'm reading/listening to Blood of the Mantis (Book three in Shadows of the Apt)

@AncientSwordRage I read Solo Levelling, but haven't checked out the anime. Is it any good?

I'm currently on Gibson's Agency and Hansen's Rampaging Fuckers of Everything on the Crazy Shitting Planet of the Vomit Atmosphere.

That last one is... hilarious.

@SQB I liked Agency, but it wasn't quite as good as The Peripheral. Perhaps just not having as much worldbuilding in it (and being set closer to the present), it seemed a bit more pedestrian.

I enjoy reading Gibson and then realising how much he predicted correctly.
Hmm. Gibson tends to write novels in groups of three related (but not sequel) stories; the Blue Ant trilogy, the Bridge trilogy, etc. I wonder if there will be a third novel in the "stub" universe.
@SQB But it's also depressing considering how dystopian a lot of his stories are... Now every time I'm watching the news I'm thinking "this looks like the start of the Jackpot..."
SQB
SQB
Yeah, it does, doesn't it?
Hmm... I went to search for reviews of RFoE... and duckduckgo gives me 11 amazon links before goodreads finally comes up. Google may be evil now, but its search is still better than that, sadly.

But also, influencers in Pattern Recognition, and kind of the direction of AI in Idoru.

@SQB True, but again, I really wish he'd been wrong...

Oh, absolutely. His middle name should be Cassandra.
If you like those, you might give Walter Jon Williams' Dagmar Shaw books a shot.
Leans a little bit more thriller than Gibson, but also very good IMO. Most like the Blue Ant books.

Q: Sci-fi about soldiers, one of which can gender-bend

Christian_JohannsenI once read a description of a story in which the protagonist was in a military/mercenary group. By the end of the story, he was retired, and was visited by his former comrade who can change sex (at will?), becoming female at that point.

Q: Short story about soldiers who are fighting against an enemy which turns out to be themselves

Richard TibbittsThe closer they get to a boundary which returns their own fire, the shorter their names get. The soldier in question goes by H, Had, Hadolaris, and Hadolaristan (this last when he's on leave). As he returns to the front, he faces a wall of firepower which crescendoes into light and heat and energy.

Q: Short story about a soldier whose unit's assault is reflected by a dimensional curtain

Richard TibbittsThe closer they get to a boundary which returns their own fire, the shorter their names get. The soldier in question goes by H, Had, Hadolaris, and Hadolaristan (this last when he's on leave), depending on his distance from the battle. The farther away he is, the more relaxed his life becomes. As...

Q: In mainstream post-Crisis continuity, when did Luthor boast to Lois about how he could end cancer and famine?

user10063In Action Comics #837, the second issue of the 2006 storyline "Up, Up, and Away!", Lois alludes to a past conversation with Lex Luthor. "He once told me that he believed he had the ability to cure cancer, to eliminate famine. But Superman was always in his way." What comic issues did this talk ...
