Q: Identify the author of a story in a high school textbook called "Ask Minnie"

AndrewIn the early 1980s, my wife read a story during a science fiction "mini-course" in high school, titled "Ask Minnie" - which she describes as "like With Folded Hands, but awful." I'd like to be able to tell her the author's name, if I can.

Q: I am looking for the title of a science fiction anthology that contains stories about food

RonThe only thing that I can remember about this anthology of science fiction stories that were about food is that one of the stories was about a creature similar to a lobster called a "malaprop" that did not want to be cooked.

Q: Name of short story about girl surviving winter

ElizabethI read this story maybe ten years ago? It was in pioneer times (?) and a girl, her brother and father were going through a mountain pass to reach a town to sell their wares. They went in the autumn, and her family was killed by some sort of accident. The young girl was unable to go any further, s...

Q: Sci-fi book with humanoid aliens disabling modern starships, dross, and a picture of Tobruk being destroyed

Andrea JensI'm looking for a sci-fi book I read in Italy in the early '90s but looked much older (70s or 80s would be my guess) and had a non-Italian author name. I don't remember the cover, only that it was a large hardcover volume and that maybe it featured more than one story. The plot of the part I reme...

I have never watched any Star Trek ever and I would like to remedy the situation! Is it a "from the beginning unto the end" type of series or is there a starting spot peeps recommend before heading back in time? I see the suggested order question we have seems to be start with TNG, but that's over a decade old at this point, and things might have changed

Since I saw it happening on an answer yesterday, I thought it would be a good idea to mention it on chat: if you intend to include a short Youtube embedded link with a timpestand in a post (a youtu.be link), remember to remove the "si=thingamajig&" before posting and leave only the "?s=50" part. Otherwise, for some reasons, Stack Exchange doesn't understand and the timestamp only works if you open the video in another tab
For example, here's the revisions for yesterday's answer: scifi.stackexchange.com/posts/284436/revisions

Q: A sci fi movie aired on discovery where robots are sent to an exoplanet

alpha_N1618I vaguely remember watching a movie or an episode on the Discovery Channel where humans sent a few robots to an exoplanet. This exoplanet had dinosaur-like animals and a very greenish atmosphere. There were 3 robots/vehicles sent from which the first crashed and the other two made it by gathering...

@Clockwork YouTube seems to only include the "si=thingything" when using the share option, but not when right-clicking and selecting "copy video URL at current time"
@fez I wrote the answer on mobile, so I didn't have much choice
SE should really improve the parsing of URLs but I doubt development time would be spent on that
@Laurel package it as a Teams FR
Does Teams even support video embeds?

Q: Movie about a team of people drilling to the center of the Earth to save humanity

RobertoI remember watching a movie that the whole premise of it was that the Earth was dying, so the U.S. government assigned a team to drill down to the Earth's core with a huge drill vehicle and explode a bomb in it. I remember one scene in which the drill goes into a huge cave full of crystals, and I...

@fez I missed most of TOS and basically started with TNG, but even the TOS movies mostly made sense. (Subject of course to things like IV not making much sense without III.)
I wasn't terribly interested in VOY, but ENT still made sense... My impression is that the series (counting the original movies as a series and the reboot movies as a new series) mostly stand on their own and you can pick up whichever grab you best.
Sure there are occasional spoilers, and maybe some cameos/easter eggs you'll miss if you haven't seen all the earlier stuff, but I can't think of any cases where it's been crucial to the plot.
I've still never watched DS9; it just left me cold and I've never bothered.
All that said, in this modern era of streaming I haven't bothered trying to track down most of the current stuff. I'm not going to sign up for a streaming service just to watch a single new show.

Q: A Plot detail from The Borrowers (1952, 1953) by Mary Norton

M. A. GoldingToday in a discussion about ferrets I wrote: I don't doubt anyone who says ferrets make good pets. However, I sort of think that ferrets are rather sinister ever since reading Mary Norton's The Borrowers (1952,1953), about a family of tiny people called "Borrowers" who live inside the walls and ...

Q: A short story from the 1960s where Martian (?) authorities wear purple togas

M. A. GoldingI read this story in a science fiction magazine, possibly if, Galaxy, or Tomorrow, sometime in the period of 1963 to 1968. It was a short story, or at least shorter than a novel. The protagonist and his two assistants operated a time machine or a spaceship or a combination. I don't remember whet...

fezIn Ready Player One all of the Sixers are contractually obligated to hand over their winnings to IOI once they found the Easter egg: To become a Sixer, you had to sign a contract stipulating, among other things, that if you found Halliday’s egg, the prize would become the sole property of your e...
