Only 4 questions tagged total, worth a meta post or would it be okay to just clear them out?
I don't want to be too hasty
It's one of those tags where I don't know how one could be an expert in "plot."
"Oh, I recognize that, it's a plot!"
Which, TBF, seeing the state of modern publishing, sadly isn't a given anymore...
16:13
@Laurel Y'know, if we were having discussions about types of plots, or comparing the way tragic plots are written in science fiction as opposed to fantasy, it might make sense.
But this is not that site.
Fwiw, I agree with you but am drawn to chaos
3
is only ever used for "plot explanation" which isn't really a generalizable thing.
16:27
[plot-explanation] is the most popular tag on movies & TV SE, but I think it's used inconsistently and just not needed on the site. I just ignore it
It's a free gold tag badge if you're active over there though
17:09
@fez If there are fewer than like, 15, I usually don't bother with a meta post.
There we go, only 3 now. That question didn't actually have anything to do with the plot, it was a question about casting.

Q: Western isekai novel; boy and girl receive fantastic items for a legend-like quest

HAEMI just started wondering about the name of a novel I read in elementary school, in Finland in the 90s. It might have been the first fantasy novel I ever read, so my recollection of the elements of the story is fairly hazy. The story starts when a boy and a girl are separately isekai'd. They end u...

Q: A SF novel with a woman who likes to sit on the floor

AlfredI read this SF novel at least 20 years ago and probably it is even much older. I remember almost nothing. I vaguely believe that I remember it is one novel in a series, but I am not sure. @xkcd yeesh that is bad

Someone recently posted an answer to a story-ID question which doesn't contain any science fiction or fantasy elements, according to the answerer. What, if anything, should be done in this situation? I thought about flagging the answer as low quality for deletion, but if it is the correct answer, we can only confirm that the question itself is off-topic by allowing the OP to acknowledge the answer as being correct.
21:41
@LogicDictates "Betrayed the crown" plus the website's description of the story in the answer as "romantic fantasy" puts it into the category of fantasy.
There are a lot of fantasy novels that are merely in a medieval setting that isn't a historical one.
22:07
@Spencer But it's not "fantasy" as we judge such here. It's "historical fantasy" like a story set in Ruritania.
Fantasy novels set in a mediaeval setting with magic.
...or time-travel technology, or psionics...
Otherwise Pillars of the Earth is fantasy.
And likewise Robinson Crusoe.

Q: Children's TV series where kid gets a computer and is accepted to some institution

maqpWhat I remember is the show was Live action Sci-fi'ish In English At earliest late 80s, most likely 90s, definitely not more recent than early 2000s. One crucial early plot device was a portable computer, roughly suit-case sized, that a younger wiz kid receives, (possibly wins at a computer rel...

23:10
@Spencer I am aware that these types of stories frequently do involve fantasy elements. However, it being labelled as "fantasy" on a website isn't enough to satisfy me that it genuinely qualifies as fantasy as per our usage of the term around here. I specifically asked the answerer whether the story involves any sci-fi or fantasy elements, and they said there were none in the chapters released so far.
23:22
I agree, but we do allow alternate history stories. Alternate history can start at any point in time.
So anything with major historical divergences as a plot point has to count. If a story is just set in some vague, unspecified historical setting, that does not count, but if the story takes place in a world with a completely different history and this is plot-relevant, it has to be allowed.
If we decide to disallow blatantly alternate universes and alternate timelines because they do not have any fantastical or speculative elements, fine, but we would have to cut out any alternate history without some type of speculative inciting incident (time travel, aliens).
From what I can tell, the story could easily be set in some historical period in Germany. But if it turns out that it takes place, say, on a world with a single continent where real-world cultures do not even exist, it should qualify.
23:41
Tapas also has "Romance" as a genre. The category "Romance Fantasy" was recently added to categorize stories which have elements of both genres
I would just assume the fantasy elements exist but aren't relevant in the first couple chapters
@DavidW I doubt we'll ever find a hard and fast line. I naively posted a meta question about this a couple of years back and it was nor received well.
