Q: Animated movie with a train that visits planets?

Sarah_UKI saw this in the late 80s, so it's not newer than that. All I can remember is that this train went to different planets, and then the train had to leave by a certain time, otherwise everyone would turn to stone.

Q: On what basis do the Borg number the species?

kesarling He-HimWell, the question is practically self-explanatory, but still, I will elaborate. The Borg queen says in Voyager, that she herself came from species 129, which means, she must not have been the first, or she would have called her species as species 1 (or even species 0, like unimatrix 0) assuming ...

Q: Why did Michael Crichton write that the T. rex can’t see you if you don’t move?

Grant CurellI’ve never read the actual book before now but for the most part and certainly based on the contents of the book thus far it is very clear the man had a knack for scientific depth. He reminds me a lot of Andy Weir. This made it odd that when I reached the iconic scene where the T. rex escapes it ...

Q: A (probably) short fiction where a Babylonian potter’s wheel turned out to be the earliest cylinder phonograph

AlfredI read this one long ago, probably more than 20 years. I’m not sure whether it was a short story or one component of a novelette or a novella. I don’t think it was an element of a whole novel, but I am not sure. The idea is that when a potter works at his wheel, the sounds produced all around (in...

Q: Why don't the Eridians in Project Hail Mary have radiation from the ground?

FiredestroyerNew poster here, so any feedback is appreciated. In Project Hail Mary, it's stated that the Eridians don't know about radiation, and they are very susceptible to cancer because of it. However, on Earth, radiation doesn't just come from space, it comes from the ground, too. How come the Eridians w...

I'm not native English speaking, I hardly ever go abroad (now with the pandemic that's actually never), but I do read in English and sometimes read an ebook in English ;-)

I'd like to keep in touch with new books appearing on the s-f/fantasy market and learn about new trends in the genre. Learn that a new POV on how to write fantasy has appeared and such and such books were published.

I do follow NYT Bestsellers as they have an API I can use with IFTTT. I try not to read reviews, because I'm not interested in opinions per se.

Well, you have to keep in mind Sturgeon's Law; new is not necessarily good. That said, I tend to find newer authors from the "Best of XXXX"-type books.
It's harder now that Dozois is no longer; I found I did fairly well with the stories he picked. Obviously I didn't like all of them, but even the ones I didn't like I mostly didn't feel I'd wasted my time.
And short stories tend to be how a lot of authors get started.
It's also a smaller investment in getting to know a new author.
(I don't look for trends, I look to follow authors. I find that authors I really like write stories I enjoy even if they're not necessarily something I would have jumped into otherwise. I probably wouldn't have picked up The Raven Tower were it not written by Ann Leckie, but I really enjoyed it.)
Bacigalupi is an example the other way; I read a few of his shorts and hated them. He's got some very creative ideas, but I couldn't read them.

I have a (probably bad) habit of judging a book by its cover, thinking that if the publisher was going to invest in good cover art for a new author, the book is good enough to be worth the marketing expense.
@Spencer That doesn't work for me anymore; even on major releases most new covers seem to be photoshop (Agency) or computer art (Surface Detail), so it's hard to judge based on the cost.
Actually, thinking about it, even when cover art was mostly painted, there were Whelan covers on books I didn't like (Swords of Mars) and Sweet covers on books I really liked (The Riddle-Master of Hed).
(I came to a negative associate with Sweet via Chalker, Donaldson and Anthony, which is undoubtedly unfair, but for example it kept me from picking up Drew's Erthring Cycle.)

Eh, I've had mixed results with Patricia McKillip.
But I don't think I've read The Riddle-Master of Hed. - 1980 was about when I started buying books for myself
The Riddle-Master of Hed is what got me started reading her books; I'm luke-warm on some of her early work (The House on Parchment Street for example) but everything she's written since the late 1980s has been very good. She's one of my go-to recommends for people who like fantasy.

Q: What is the origin of the trope of enslaved wizards/witches?

spardyI have been reading The Wheel of Time books, and found the Seanchan Damanes to be very similar to The Tethered Mage books, where magic is rare and strictly controlled (even with minders that use devices to control the magic). I also saw a very similar control of magic in The Fifth Season where Gu...

Q: Fantasy book with a young male transported to another world; giants and strange sexual themes?

KatThis is going to be a tough one. I read this book as a preteen and I distinctly remember it being uncomfortable and inappropriate for my reading age. It was a fantasy book involving a young male protagonist who is transported to another world (possibly through a portal on a beach). In this world,...

Q: What is the meaning of the text in the ancient books?

AdamantIn S02E08 of The Dragon Prince, Viren searches some ancient texts for information about an individual or entity that he met.
