Q: Where did the idea of the ornithopter originate?

chcukThis question stems from a commonly depicted mode of transportation, the ornithopter. It is the primary flight tool in the latest Dune movie as well as seen in Black Panther and in several books I've been reading. My question is where did the idea for this flying machine first stem from as it ...

Q: What short story has a future bicycle shop owner surprised when two parents actually visit the shop?

user22873I am looking for a sci-fi story that I read in the 80's. It was a story about the future and I am sorry but the only vivid detail I remember was that parents had actually gone to a store to purchase a gift (a bicycle I believe), and the person at the store thought it was strange to have people ac...

@Marvin I'm more and more wondering if we want/need for these?
There's very sightly different things needed, but it's also got enough questions we might have a split in tag experts/watchers

If you want to get rid of altogether sure. Splitting it for one is a slippery slope for splitting it for all

Q: Why were they called the Corsairs of Umbar?

BatpersonIn Tolkein's Middle-earth, the region of Umbar is some distance almost due south of Gondor. If they don't live outright b...

Q: Short story about ice racing on glaciers or gletschers

Sara PhinaYears ago, I read a short story in an anthology, (a collection of SF-shorts), which was about ice-racing. Does this really read better with the extra ellipses? scifi.stackexchange.com/posts/256280/revisions
I mean, I pretty much started with that, but then I decided it read better as separate blocks.
Huh. Introspecting, I'm probably reacting more strongly to the edit comment of "fixing" it than the change itself. :-P
I'd still appreciate some feedback if it really was "broken" though, so I can do it the other way next time.

I'm not a fan of the separate blocks myself, especially with the first two having been from the same paragraph. I'd have probably done something similarish to the edit
Not to say either or is right though, I think it's mostly a style thing

@Marvin @Randal'Thor I haven't seen the show, but isn't this a significant departure from the book? Emond's Field wasn't destroyed, was it? Just attacked.
@TheLethalCarrot Fair enough; I probably wouldn't really have been bothered had it been you making the change anyway. But some low-rep user who just happens to have a diamond? It rankled a bit.

I get that; obviously I checked who it was.

I'm just saying, it's not like they're completely new to the network and was already relatively established in it before getting the job

@DavidW If the edit wasn't fixing anything, there'd be no reason to make it. ;-)

@NapoleonWilson Thank you! If I ever needed extra justification, you've just provided it! :D

I'm mainly here so people will know who I am when B5 reboots

7:04 PM
@JourneymanGeek raises hand I know who you are.

Will you be rebooting with orange boots? ;)

Also, reboot? I thought they were just redoing the video quality or something?

aH APPARENTLY...
there's some WB exec who hated B5
and kept sabotaging it
he's gone

@JourneymanGeek Is it supposed to?

then CW called warner brothers and went "We want to do a B5 show"
and JMS was like "half my cast is dead, if I'm going to do it again, I want to do it right"
so its a reboot
@NapoleonWilson yes

7:06 PM
But but ...

I think next fall

Yeah, that. Half the cast is dead and irreplaceable.

and it won't be a 'straight' retelling I think
but I think/hope we'll get all 5 seasons

I suppose they could have more stories set in the same universe?
Like picking up on some of the things we glimpsed in the Deconstruction of Falling Stars.

@Randal'Thor what JMS is saying on twitter is its a reboot
and honestly

7:08 PM
Mehhh.

If it was anyone else, I'd be teed off
But I think I'd like to see what he'll do decades on

But well, I mean ... if JMS thinks he can do it and do it well, who are we to carp?
It's not like he'll be crapping on his own legacy, surely.

yup
and CW seems more enthusiastic

Unless it's a cheap cash-in on a beloved franchise.
But again, surely he cares too much about his show (and/or is rich enough already) to do that.

I think part of the issues he had with WB was they wouldn't give him the budget to do things right

Q: Are the Poems of Rydra Wong in Babel-17 based on the real works of Marilyn Hacker

David SiegelIn the novel Babel-17 the protagonist Rydra Wong is both a space captain and a poet. I have seen it asserted that Wong's poems are to some extent based on those of Marilyn Hacker. Hacker was married to Samuel R. Delany when Delaney wrote Babel-17 and they edited Quark: A Quarterly of Speculative ...

@steelersquirrel I was born in the party.... Moulded by it....etc.

I don't even know the...dead action one.

dead action might be the manga

All the books I never read are getting shows, and all the shows I never watched are getting reboots.... 🙃

lol
I'm waiting on reviews to give WOT a shot
slowly working through the expanse too (I love space opera, but the expanse is both good and heavy)

Right, that WoT thing is out, too. I haven't even yet watched the last season of Bosch, though.
@JourneymanGeek I finally finished that at least (as far as it goes for now).

7:28 PM
A Pizza
i want a pizza
it will do that
how much ?

@AncientSwordRage At this point I'm not certain it's a bad thing that the books I love aren't getting made into shows. The only book->show I've enjoyed as much in the form of a show is Dirk Gently's and that's mostly because they basically ignored the book and made an equivalently weird show that worked with the medium.
Though Good Omens was still worth watching.

I find that the only book -> show conversions I've liked are where I found the book OK-to-good but not something so special for me.
LotR and WoT are out because they're so amazing that no screen thing could do justice to them.
But, on the other end of the scale, I've been burned a few times by thinking "eh, the books were crap, the films can't be much worse" and finding out that they were.

@DavidW I enjoyed most of the Discworld tv-movies
@Randal'Thor lotr is done really well for a movie, as it didn't get stretched out like the Hobbit

7:40 PM
@AncientSwordRage Those were okay, but I still thought the books were better. Partly because Pratchett's writing is just that good.

If you can take it as its own thing @Randal'Thor
2

Meh.

@DavidW that's a given

Well, it might indeed be a good series of films if taken stand-alone, but as an adaptation of one of the greatest pieces of literature, that's a tough act to follow.

This is true.

7:46 PM
Do people genuinely think LotR has standalone value as literature, in addition to its significance as a great and seminal piece of fantasy writing?

@Randal'Thor I think our opinion on lotr might differ there, it's really good, and it is/was groundbreaking but I wouldn't consider it as one of the greatest (at least not off the top of my head)
@NapoleonWilson I see it more as a vehicle for Tolkien's world building, which drew on a lot of disparate sources in an engaging way

That's what I thought, too (and how it was originally conceived afterall).

@NapoleonWilson TBF, I read "fantasy" into his statement. But I don't know how much weight I'd put on "great work of literature" anyway.

Isn't the worldbuilding a large part of what makes LotR such a literary achievement?
You can't really separate the story from the worldbuilding, it's part of it.

@DavidW I do think to remember Rand genuinely likes Tolkien's writing, though.

8:11 PM
@NapoleonWilson I'm certainly not trying to disparage Tolkien. I'm more down on "literature" (by which one means "serious literature") much of which I have found variously unreadable.
The first time I read LoTR, I read the entire trilogy in a weekend; I couldn't put it down.
(I admit I skipped the appendices, though.)

Oh, they were awesome. (Or at least very helpful.)
Actually, I ordered a 3 book version and kinda forgot the appendices as they weren't directly sold together (which is really stupid). So I was kinda confused until I realized my mistake. ;-)

@Randal'Thor I think of them as separate, but then again I am thinking of literature and writing as synonymous which misses a lot of nuance

Q: How many times were there "Klingons on/off the starboard bow"?

J. MiniThere two excellent parodies contain either the phrase "Klingons on the starboard bow" or "Klingons off the starboard bow". How many times, if ever, did this exact phrase occur in The Original Series? I can't help but wonder if, like "beam me up Scotty", it was zero.

Q: Why does Moraine act this way around the whitecloaks?

dspyzFrom watching the Wheel of Time TV show, I got a pretty confused interpretation of who and what the children of the light/whitecloaks are and what they do (as you can see in this question). There's a scene in episode 2 where the heroes encounter a contingent of whitecloaks and Moraine Sedai hides...
