Q: Name of movie about a little girl and her mom fighting cyborg

nanogoatsI remember seeing this movie as a kid in the 90s. I think it's a 90s film but could be 80s, and I think the word cyborg is in the title. The premise as I remember it is a little girl and her mom are being hunted by some robot or cyborg in a post apocalyptic desert setting. I remember scenes of th...

Q: What does "the same" refer to?

Ken JerichoLockhart says to Harry Potter and Ron: Lockhart: I'm rather gifted with Memory Charms. Otherwise, all those wizards would have gone blabbing. I'd never have sold another book. In fact, I'm going to have to do the same to you. What does "the same" refer to?

Q: In Project Hail Mary, why wasn't nitrogen in the normal human atmosphere a problem for the taumeba?

wogslandIn Andy Weir's Project Hail Mary, nitrogen in the atmosphere is lethal for the astrophage predator taumeba. In part of the story they are trying to breed taumeba that can live in a few percent nitrogen. This taumeba escapes and kills all the astrophage, but why didn't the 70% nitrogen in the norm...

@Himarm, Yes, anything from a (as you put it) noticing looks upwards. I was wondering if he'd shown any interest in anyone else really, however fleeting that interest turned out to be. — The Dark Lord Apr 21 '16 at 15:35
That makes the question basically "what's every time Harry notices a woman or a girl?" which is overly wide.

That does push it but if the answers are exhaustive the list isn't that long and even then some of the examples given have been contested

9:32 AM
It's certainly not a great, or well worded (including the comment), question though

SQB
He noted Rosmerta as "curvy and attractive", even though it was Ron who had the soft spot for her. He blushed when Fleur Delacour kissed him. He was clearly stunned by Hermione at the Yule Ball, suddenly seeing her as woman for the first time. Possibly the Veelas, although that was a magical effect.
I'd argue that "noticing looks", what most other instances are, is not showing interest, not even fleeting.

Q: What comic book characters stayed dead?

WadeAccording to Wikipedia, there was once a common expression that "the only people who stay dead in comics are Bucky, Jason Todd, and Uncle Ben." By now, the first two were also resurrected. On the other hand, as far as I know, Gwen Stacy (of Earth 616) remained dead for good. Of course, I'm sure t...

I agree, I think the main problem here is from that comment which does contradict the question as written
@Marvin That feels very listy

And dupey?
Feels like I've seen it before, although maybe I'm just thinking of one of those you linked in comments.

9:52 AM
I'm sure we've had it before
@SQB I'd argue the same

Q: Horror novel from the 1990s involving vampires, the cult of Kali, and thuggees

medusawinkI purchased this book second-hand in the late 90's, so it was probably published somewhere between 1989-1998. I'm basing this on the fact that the book was near new condition when I bought it. The book was definitely classified as 'horror'. The story is set in Victorian London. It features some f...

Q: Who wrote which comments in the 2001 edition of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

AncientSwordRageI couldn't find a good answer anywhere else, and I can't find my copy of the 2001 edition either to confirm or cross reference handwriting. The 2001 edition contains diegetic scribbled notes from characters in the series, namely Harry, Ron and Hermione. One of which is initialled by Ron (in the s...

Q: In Project Hail Mary, how did Eridians make sensors for electromagnetic radiation without understanding radiation?

louischIn Andy Weir's Project Hail Mary, on page 224, we get the following conversation between Rocky and Grace: I try another approach. "Space has very very very fast hydrogen atoms. They move almost the speed of light. They were created by stars long long long ago." "No. No mass in space. Space is em...

@AncientSwordRage the first one? Yeah. Second one looks great, though.

@SQB most oneboxing is borked and has been for years

SQB
Yeah, I know.

@SQB If you're tagging with you probably at least want the tag as well I think

SQB
@TheLethalCarrot we have that one for the films, right?

There's also but that doesn't seem necessary
is for the FB franchise/series so presumably it covers tie in material

12:59 PM
@TheLethalCarrot the book in question ties in with hp not the film AFAIK

SQB
Yeah, but this is a tie-in to Harry Potter, not to the Fantastic Beasts series.

Oh okay, misunderstood

What SQB said

SQB
That name is seriously overloaded. It's
a) An in-universe book
b) A spin off book(let), purporting to be a)
c) A film
d) The name of the series c) started.

I looked at the release year and didn't even realise, that should've twigged it for me

SQB
1:01 PM
And possibly e) the novelisation / screenplay of c).

At least e) is c)
For the most part anyway I guess

My head may have exploded

Watch your edit count @SQB

SQB
Don't worry, I am.
I'm now adding the tag info for the other two, then will let it rest for a bit.

Jolly good :)

SQB
1:08 PM
I still think we could use tags for the individual works in the main Harry Potter series, both the books and the films.

Well if you want a tag per book/film, it'd be best (imo) to have one that covers both and then add [books] or [movie] to distinguish, like what is already done for HP. That is something for meta though

@SQB and there's two versions of b.)

SQB
@Mithical there are?

1:47 PM
Though, c) would precisely be Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. So not necessarily the same as d).

Since about when does the question timeline/history page record if the qusetion goes HNQ (hot network question)?

A: Now you can know if a question really hit the HNQ

CatijaOh, hey, someone noticed! Indeed, you're correct. We've added a history event to both the edit history and the timeline to indicate when a question first appears on the Hot Network Questions list. This was made possible by the work Adam did recently to move where we house the HNQ list in our c...

@TheLethalCarrot 2019, thank you
I was trying to look if some of my questions or answers that have high votes have benefited from HNQ.
But most of my activity on Sci Fi SE is from before 2019, so the timeline won't help.

I don't know if there's a search modifier to check but you could try something like: user:4918 created:2019-02-28... score:5...

@TheLethalCarrot I could, but I'm mostly interested in my highest voted questions, and they're old.

2:43 PM
But yeah you don't have many posts after the feature was implemented

scifi.stackexchange.com/q/132557/4918 especially, which has a very highly voted answer.

With that many votes I can't imagine it didn't enter the HNQ

My highest voted question scifi.stackexchange.com/q/157559/4918 at least has an obviously clickbait-worthy title, so that one I understand. Not the most clickbaity, which is scifi.stackexchange.com/q/145632/4918 , but still.

Q: Have the Wachowskis explained what significance they intended for the character name "Trinity"?

NullMany of the characters in The Matrix have meaningful names which relate to the role the character plays. For example: "Neo" is an anagram of "One" (for The One). Also, one of the many references to Neo as a Christ figure is his surname (Anderson), which means "son of man" -- one of the titles Je...

Anyone know any good communities for digital easter eggs? For those who don't know - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easter_egg_(media)
I requested for it on area52, but the proposal was rejected

I imagine there's gotta be a subreddit along those lines

@TheLethalCarrot, true, but most people there don't know what they are talking about
😅

You could probably argue that for just about everywhere :P
5

@TheLethalCarrot, true
But I found a good community for SF here, although I had a similar perspective before.
An internet search shows nothing but news websites saying that the hide tabs button on the bottom right of windows machines are Easter Eggs :p
(BTW it is not)

SQB
@InfinityMilestone possibly Arqade or Retrocomputing.

3:06 PM
(the URL is gaming.se)

SQB
Yeah, I just noticed.

If the work is SFF-nal you could ask on here as well (forgot to mention that)
But I wouldn't spam self answers or questions on them

migrates @TheLethalCarrot's diamond to Reddit :-P

@SQB, true, but Arquade is mostly about gaming and not all easter eggs are in games. Retrocomputing, though, will need to be checked out.
@TheLethalCarrot, just as a confirmation, can I ask whether or not something is an easter egg here? Even if it is on a platform like Google?

3:17 PM
You mean the actual website Google? I doubt that would be on-topic.

@NapoleonWilson yes

That might be something for meta, and of course assuming the Easter Egg is to something SFF-nal

That's what I was asking
@TheLethalCarrot, point.

However, I'm also not quite sure what you mean with the concept of "ask whether something is an easter egg".

It's a bit more of a grey area and I can't recall anything similar off the top of my head

3:18 PM
@NapoleonWilson, I mean that there is a lot of confusion that some people have as to whether or not something can be considered an easter egg.

You might have to come up with an example question to see exactly what you mean

Understandably, as that could be a rather fuzzy definition.

@TheLethalCarrot, agreed.

I don't think there are remotely hard rules that govern what is an "Easter Egg". I mean, the term itself is already largely informal and naturally improvised.

SQB
We do have a tag .

3:22 PM
And that's not for stories surrounding the Easter Bunny?

@NapoleonWilson, no. It seems that the tag is largely for things like references to other franchises and things that people think are nods to other things in the same franchise that are not supposed to be there.

@InfinityMilestone I figured. ;-)

Some examples of easter eggs can be found on my blog. (Please consider this only as an example and not as promotion)

Q: How come Tom Bombadil didn't appear in the Lord Of The Rings trilogy?

Razar MackhamTom Bombadil has been shown to be a powerful and significant figure in Middle Earth. However, in Peter Jackson's adaption of J. R. R. Hello!

@Slytherincess Greetings!
(Arriving and greeting the room suddenly makes me realize it's been several days since Ser McLean has popped in.)

I always mean to visit the chatroom, but sometimes time gets away from me, or the chatroom is empty/dead.
@Mithrandir24601 - 24601! Do you like Les Mis? It's one of my most favorite novels. I also like the musical. I also use 24601 for a variety of things online. My alternate online handle is from Les Mis. Not to go on and on . . .
@SQB - Hey you :)

A wild @Slytherincess appears! How're things?
Gosh it's been a while

8:10 PM
@AncientSwordRage - HI! :) It's been a while. I thought I would stop in for a chat (meaning I'm doing everything I can to avoid housework). I'm doing well. How are you?

@Slytherincess also avoiding house work 😅

Hi @Slytherincess! :-)

I just started watching Downton Abbey. It was either that or Midsomer Murders, which has like a thousand seasons. What are you watching/reading?

@DavidW I saw on the news that there's a computer glitch with the Hubble Space Telescope. I imagine he's very busy.

@Randal'Thor - Hey there!
Are you talking about @Donald.McLean re: the Hubble? Yeah, I've been reading that it's kind of on the blink.

8:21 PM
Yeah, I think he actually works on the computer systems of the Hubble.
Hopefully he wasn't responsible for the part that broke :-P

Sometimes things just run their course, though. Most things, really.
@AncientSwordRage - Yeah, I have to shampoo my dining room rug. Almost anything would be better than having to do that, ugh!

@Randal'Thor Oh, indeed. I haven't been paying attention and didn't realize that was still ongoing. I'm so used to the Hubble team getting it back on its feet fairly quickly.

SQB
@Slytherincess hey you! How have you been?
@Slytherincess but it really ties the room together, doesn't it?
@Randal'Thor he's in hiding.

@Slytherincess oh goodness, why would you do that? Has it been to the hair dressers?

@SQB To be honest it's been a tough year (which, I know, a lot of people have had a hard time over the last year) but things are better now - more of an even keel. What are you up to?
@AncientSwordRage Yes! Next up: curlers!

8:37 PM
Glad to hear things are looking up for you @Slytherincess

SQB
Same same. Kids are (becoming) teens now and all that that entails.
How are your kids?

@Slytherincess empty chairs at empty tables

8:54 PM
@Mithical: For the wretched of the earth, there is a flame that never dies - even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise :) So much love for Les Mis. I saw it in New York when it was still running on Broadway.
@SQB - Hopefully your kids will be great teens. Both mine were really awesome when they were teens. Conversely, I was an awful, terrible teen. Ugh, lol! My kids are doing well. Both are working and are stable and great fun. I'm lucky.

Pro Effects MAXIn this shot, a fellow prisoner is seemingly disintegrated or something. I'm wondering what that was. Was he being killed or was it a portal or something?

Who was I chatting to about AEDs?

Defibs? Me and @b_jonas

9:49 PM
Well that's a good video on them I think

10:15 PM
@Slytherincess :D Who doesn't love Les Mis? :D
We did it in school and it was so obvious that this was just a cut above nearly everything else, I just got a bit obsessed for a few years

10:31 PM
@TheLethalCarrot It should be pretty exhaustive. I searched every instance of “pretty”, “beautiful”, and “attractive” in all seven books.

10:51 PM
And “good looking” for that matter.

Q: Post-apocalyptic book; apocalypse caused by dinosaurs, people live underground

user143051It was probably a YA novel. I’m pretty sure the plot went something like this: Scientists created dinosaurs, which created an apocalypse Society lives underground, in factions the main character’s father is… missing? Doing something somewhere else? I’m not sure, I just know that she had to sneak...

@Alex and "handsome"?

11:03 PM
Ugh. TIL that "dinosaur apocalypse" is actually a (sub-)genre. :-P

@b_jonas That word is used surprisingly often, though the only female it is used for is Madame Maxime, who is arguably not a full human.

Q: What is Gandalf's Westron name, and why does he sign with a "G" rune?

Kerrek SBGandalf signs his letter to the bartender in Bree with a "G" rune: But "Gandalf" is the English rendition of what's presumably meant to be Westron in-universe. What then is Gandalf's real Westron name, and does it also start with "G"?

@Randal'Thor I work on the archive, so I'm not working the operational issue. I don't know any more than what's reported in the news.

Q: Harry Potter fanfiction abandoned in an orphanage

The huge potato Is backI remember that Harry has long hair and he has a different name like Indy or something. He was raised in an orphanage where he was abused and neglected. When he goes in Hogwart he is sorted in slytherin. He is really powerful and decide to go with Tom Riddle.
