Q: looking for an old film

mattI saw a movie on TV sometime around 1982 or something like that -- it looked like it was filmed in the 60's or 70's. I remember it was set in renaissance era europe and there was a boy that worked as an apprentice in a printing press shop... he had this mysterious friend from another world/star ...

Q: An Asimov story where the fact that "committee" has three double letters plays a role

AlfredThis is not really an SF question, but about a short story by Isaac Asimov, so I think it fits. In one of his many "mysteries", someone asks for a rather short word with three double letters in it, and the fact that the answer is "committee" plays a role. I don't remember anything else, whether i...

Q: Why Did Commander Appo try to kill Senator Organa?

HelloZero005Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith - in the the Jedi Temple, Commander Appo aim his gun at Senator Organa and trying to kill him, why is this?

10:08
@DavidW yes, I liked it
@AncientSwordRage markdown should always be preferred over HTML I believe
If that's what you mean
@TheLethalCarrot I agree, where there is a good alternative. Let me dig out the post I was talking about
Although when imgur borked a while back I used HTML image resizing for a while

A: Opt-in alpha test for a new Stacks editor

Franck Dernoncourtfeature-request status-review Fine-tuning images: resizing or adding links to sources or full-sized images will need Markdown mode. That'd be convenient to have a way to resize images in the non-Markdown mode, as I've seen many people resizing images by lowering the resolution instead of using...

@Catija thanks the issue with these links is that they have images with lower resolution. — Franck Dernoncourt Jan 27 at 23:30
@FranckDernoncourt Personally, anyway, this is why I always default the linked image to the full-size image. This is simple in our current scheme - I copy the image URL and add it to the list at the bottom a second time. Then I change the number for the second one, add an m to the first link, and then change the reference link in the post body to refer to the second link as the image link... if that all makes sense. :D If we implemented this well, that would all be automatic when uploading, say - I upload, pick a size and the MD automatically links to the full size image. — Catija ♦ Jan 27 at 23:33
@Catija thanks, got it, makes sense but I think it is preferable to display the image with the highest resolution but rescaled to a lower dimension — Franck Dernoncourt Jan 27 at 23:39
Good to know - I guess I've been lucky. I don't tend to have issues with the resized images being legible on my end but I think I have heard that some do have issues with it. I don't have a great solution - but, as the person who's written our internal guide on using HTML to resize images on our Team - I know it can be janky to try and do manually. :D — Catija ♦ Jan 27 at 23:41
In particular @catija's bit about hearing people have issues with low res images
@AncientSwordRage That's what I always do, works well and pretty easy to do
I don't know what the solution is
@TheLethalCarrot yes should be easy now, but they still talk about htmling it, and resizing as 'preferable', even if it might not be
Guess we'll see what they come up with... I've not really been following the upcoming changes TBH
@TheLethalCarrot I think Franck is talking about what they prefer currently
Oh, I don't really know what imgur does with the resizing and haven't seen a problem with it myself so not really sure what he means
11:05
@TheLethalCarrot So the imgur version resizes server-side so it sends fewer pixels. If you do it with the img html tags, it sends all the pixels, but the browser only shows some of them, resizing the picture. That means on a screen twice the size, or when zooming in to twice the size, you get twice the pixels, and it still looks just as good
I took a conference with someone who had visual issues, and they had something like jewellers loupe to magnify the screen for them enough. I imagine having the high-res version would be extremely handy for them in that scenario
Oh right I see what you mean, having the click through go to the full size/original image (what Catija was saying and my general practice) gives a good enough solution though
So you still have the full size easily available, just the version in the post is smaller so it doesn't take up the full screen... I think that essentially replicates the img HTML anyway
11:50
It's an ok stop gap until it's easier to do it 'properly' but ideally users with accessibility issues shouldn't be relegated to second class citizens (clicking through is a small thing, but they add up)
Well in a lot of cases clicking through is needed to see the image properly anyway, or you make the image take up the entire screen which is worse in my opinion
but it doesn't take up the entire screen
it's resized by the browser
I mean when doing it the markdown/imgur way... when doing the img tags though you're setting the size anyway right? Won't it always be that size until clicking to the larger image? I've not done enough web stuff to know the ins and outs
@TheLethalCarrot Hmmm, I didn't think so. I thought it would just look that size?
I might be getting confused
Or I just don't know enough about how it all works and am confusing things up ahha

Q: Binary Byte? 1980s Anti-Computer Novel

Lee EckhardtI have never read this book, although I did read a long review in the LA Times during the '80s. Q: What stops the Prefects and Head Boy (or Head Girl) from misusing the points system?

ShreedharLooking at the answers to the question asked here, the Prefects, Head Boy and Head Girl are allowed to take and give points (just not from fellow Prefects).
