Q: Would a Muggle Show Up on the Marauders Map?

SlytherincessI did a cursory scan of some of the Harry Potter questions dealing with the Marauders Map and I didn't find exactly what I'm wondering about, but feel free to VTC this if it turns out to be a dupe. Okay, my question involves the Marauders Map. Would a non-magical individual (i.e a Muggle or a Squ...

Q: Man is in jail where family of murder victims kill murderer?

lcb0407Ok I think this was a short story I read, but it may have been a novel or even a tv show or movie. There is a man in jail and he is like a real psychopath and a lady is there asking him to write in a journal or something and show regret for killing his victim(s)? And he doesn’t show regret so the...

Q: Old school sci-fi: Robot escapes planet by riding on the outside of a space ship, and Jurists for the galaxy

AnytusI'm sure the book was from a well known old-school sci-fi writer. [1] The only thing I remember about the first book is that a Robot escapes a planet magnetically [I think] attaching itself to the outside of a space ship. [2] The only thing I remember about the second book is that the galaxy had ...

@Marvin So, we've discussed what kinds of questions we can't refer to other stacks. Any way we can encourage Worldbuilding to have the same discussion about us?

12:16 PM
@DavidW I'm on it

I should revisit that at some point, I might just go with the lazy way and post an answer linking to the various other metas
Only takes someone to take the initiative for either posting to their meta what we'd like or collating stuff on ours and then posting to theirs though

Q: Farewell 2 Arms - When Is A Person A Person? When Are They Not?

DominicMy first post here was a desperate plea to find a certain stop motion episode that was fascinating due to the question it begged as to human identity. I found it. An episode from Bump In The Night. Now I have found it, I was wondering what you sci-fi folks think of it? (link below). As the charac...

@TheLethalCarrot The last starred messages hint at something
but I'm not going to get into that

I mean I'm quietly confident I know why from the date Mith said, that comment wasn't a serious "Wonder why"

@TheLethalCarrot I thought you might be hinting at that

Huh. If someone wants a project less daunting than "enter image description here" I just noticed there are well over a hundred posts that misspell "Millennium Falcon." :)

Q: What does Satu refer to?

PhilippIn S3E6: "Scavengers" of Discovery, we see the following exchange: Burnham: Captain, the federation can not stabilize while the cause of the Burn remains a question. And there's a man's life at stake. Satu: There are many lives. Today, I saw how vulnerable Federation has become. The admiral woul...

@DavidW how do they spell it?

Mostly "millenium" though I did find a couple of "millennum." I obviously haven't checked all possible misspellings though.

Q: Is A Chinese Dragon Technically A Drake?

FirestrykeSo I'm kinda obsessed with dragons. I have been researching them like crazy, and one thing I noticed is the definition of a Drake (Any dragon with four legs and is wingless) matches up with the physical description of a Chinese Dragon which has a long serpentine body, is wingless, and has four le...

Q: Do standard definitions exist for dragon, drake, wyrm and wyvern?

DustinDavisIn many different books including Dragonlance, Tales from the Sword Coast, Magic: The Gathering and other similar fantasy series, I've seen references to dragons, drakes, wyrms and wyvern (which may be plural version of wyrm?). Is there a standard definition of each; and if so, what are the diffe...

@AncientSwordRage It is a bit of a mess. I'm not sure if I learned anything or not, reading it. :) Reading the comments it was apparently a bit controversial back in the day too.
Heh. Looking at the timeline it's been a lot more controversial recently. It looks like you and Rand can arm wrestle over whether it should be open or not. :)

Q: A story where everyone is programmed (or bred) to be non-violent and non-confrontational except for one

chasly - supports MonicaI vaguely remember reading a story where everyone is programmed (or bred) to be non-violent and non-confrontational. Only one man escapes this and he goes on a trail of robbery and intimidation. I can remember very little else except that I'm pretty sure it was a well-known author. Also it was b...

@Marvin Nope, it's not what I thought from the question title.
@AncientSwordRage Ah yes, the eternal question of wurms, worms, and wyrms.

7:39 PM
I dunno if I don't take a bit of umbrage at the characterization of SF&F being poor reviewers. Most stuff that actually goes through review gets pretty much knocked into shape. It's all the rest of the stuff that someone has to actually go and look at that causes problems.

Q: Is the Super Hero Genre Considered to be Sci-fi or Fantasy?

FirestrykeSo in superhero comics or tv shows (like DC or Marvel), there are sci-fi elements and fantasy elements as well. Examples: Superman comes from the planet Krypton which has futuristic tech, which is sci-fi. Wonder Woman's equipment is magical, which is fantasy. So which is it? Sci-fi or Fantasy?

8:16 PM
@DavidW it’s not just that either, most newer stuff is knocked into shape straight away. It’s the stuff that’s a decade old that’s not as good. Also we have more content and traffic so of course it’s easier for stuff to get missed
And in any case I agree, I don’t think that’s a fair assessment

Q: Where Did The Myths of Dragons Come From?

The Greeks told of Dragons inhabiting the ocean, Germans told of mighty flying dragons that breathed fire, the Chinese and Japanese told of Dragons with spiritual powers, the English and French told of scaled beasts capturing maidens and guarding hoards of...

@Marvin I'm torn on this one... it's kind of somewhere halfway between "what's the first story?" which we allow and "What's the scientific explanation?" which is not.

Q: Help identifying a SF novel about an alien world where the people worship death

Q: Why Was My Question Asking For Theories Downvoted? Why Was My Answer for Same Question Downvoted As Well?

FirestrykeSo in a question, I asked recently on the regular sci-fi fantasy stack exchange site Where Did The Myths of Dragons Come From? The answer I wrote was a heavily researched theory I came up with. And the thing is, the question (which I wrote) was asking for theories. And I presented my theory and p...
