Q: Why isn't the whole world inside a suitcase?

AlexWe see on various occasions that magic can expand space. For instance, in Chapter Five of Chamber of Secrets: "Not a word to Molly," he whispered to Harry as he opened the trunk and showed him how it had been magically expanded so that the luggage fitted easily. And Chapter of Deathly Hallo...

I wonder if we should become just a little bit more proactive in closing ID questions as too broad. I know there's a good point to be made (and often is made by user14111) that even a very short description may provide unique identification for a single story, and for that reason we don't often close ID questions as too broad. But maybe in some cases we should.
I've noticed a couple of questions recently where several answers have been provided that seem to fit the description perfectly well, and none of them are confirmed correct.

Q: Old sci fi story about a ship that arrives on an alien planet and watches evolution from bacteria to whatever comes after man

Joao LoboI've been trying to remember a short story which I read in the 1980s in a sci-fi anthology. I recall a ship arriving an alien planet and watching as evolution from bacteria to fish, reptile, mammal, human, ...took only a couple of days. If I remember correctly, it ended with the creature that ev...

Q: Old cartoon late 70s early tv show about a time travel?

JJ RossI am trying to find the name of a old cartoon on Saturday mornings where I think a professor pulled the handle on a time machine and showcased historical times like dinosaurs, the western migration across America and like?

If I wasn't a mod, I'd definitely vote to close them, but I don't want to unilaterally hammer them. Anyone else agree with my feeling here?

@Randal'Thor Too Broad doesn't exist anymore.

7:46 AM
@Alex Well, whatever they call it now. It's still the old Too Broad in new clothing.

@Randal'Thor Yeah. Though the new subtext doesn't indicate that at all.
This question currently includes multiple questions in one. It should focus on one problem only.

Yeah, but ... what can we do :-/

@Randal'Thor this one doesn't seem too broad.

On Puzzling they have a custom off-topic close reason for "too many possible answers", but we don't have that here.

Generally speaking, I think we do close the too broad ones efficiently.

7:49 AM
@Jenayah Seems to be a very generic description, and there's three different answers which look like they fit?
Ditto with the other one.
You probably know the story-ID tag better than I by now, but I just noticed two questions like this in two days and thought I'd mention it.

(what pisses me off in story-id curation is people who edit them but leave the title as "what was this manga", but that's another matter)

It's easy to overlook editing the title when you're focused on the body box.
I think I've done that a few times.

@Randal'Thor I can't speak about short stories. I don't read much of them and am not by no way knowledgeable about them
@Randal'Thor those are a year old, do you mean new ones?
@Randal'Thor not really an excuse; either you're committing fully to the janitorial work you're doing, or... I mean, just make sure you're not leaving work for others to do. It's just reading one line

@Jenayah The first one I linked to was asked yesterday. The second one is a year old, true; I just noticed it because of some new activity/flags today.

@Randal'Thor for this particular cartoon, had it not had the 70s date, I may have VTCed. But the date here quite limited the possibilities, hence on the fly, I wouldn't think it's too broad.
After seeing the three answers, maybe. But we're drifting into the territory of closing the questions because of the answers. I mean I you don't know either of the 3 cartoons, would you have thought at first it'd be too broad?
@Randal'Thor duh, I can't read today.

8:01 AM
@Jenayah They're definitely both the type of question I routinely downvote because I think they're not uniquely enough described.
You make a good point about closing questions because of answers. The point user14111 usually makes when people VTC as too broad is "if you think there are many stories matching this, can you show me at least two?" I guess I was sort of thinking of applying that idea in converse.

@Randal'Thor oh, downvote is another matter entirely :) I DV a bunch of those as well.
@Randal'Thor yes, it's a sane comment to make.

I very rarely close ID questions (except as dupes), but that's because I have binding votes. Can't remember what my pre-mod policy on close-voting them was.

The amount and kind of story-id questions may have shifted since then.

Q: Why didn't Shikaku and Inoichi flee to safety?

William R. EbenezerWhen the HQ came to know about the biju bombs that were headed for them, why didn't they try to flee? It's possible to outrun a biju bomb's blast, as shinobi do cover distances real fast. They could have been a valuable asset in the war.

Q: What is the magazine advert on Dennis Nedry desktop in Jurassic Park?

Max RichirI wondered if someone may help me to identify the advert of the open magazine on Nedry's desktop in Jurassic Park. It looks like a computer advert with purple 3D mesh and some graphs. It's possible to see a pyramidal logo brand but I'm not able to recognize it. Thank you

Q: Please idenfity: movie with a living bio-engineered fur coat collar that would purr when stroked

user128442My mother and I both vividly remember a particular scene of an old Science-Fiction movie but neither of us remembers anything else about that movie. In the scene a woman was wearing a kind of fur coat collar that was actually a living bio engineered organism. The collar did not have eyes or any...

Q: Why, in Silmarillion, does Melkor disappear forever and leaves Sauron to reign as some kind of "Melkor copy"?

WoodyMelkor is many times driven back and trapped and whatnot after being defeated. At some point, the "Valar"/gods banish him to some kind of existence from which he cannot come back. Or can he? Why not? I don't understand why Sauron gets to continue the evil deeds as if he is Melkor. Wasn't he just ...

To whoever voted to close as too broad, WTF? How many movies fitting that scenario can you quote? oO — Jenayah 1 min ago

I guess you could say I have a similar relationship on "closing story-IDs as too broad" as @Alex does with "closing HP stuff as POB" :D

Q: Was fighter pilot training part of a Jedi Padawan's training during the times of the Galactic Republic?

user255577I am wondering if during the times of the Galactic Republic that it was a requirement that all Jedi Padawans had to learn how to pilot a fighter ship and learn fundamental dog-fighting skills in order to achieve the rank of Jedi Knight. If so, it makes me wonder if all the Jedi Masters were capa...

What is up with all the old clearly non-POB questions in the close queue as POB lately?

I haven't checked the queues recently. But now you have unleashed a beast!

Like... how is this POB?

And my question became Hot Network. I guess that explains the three upvotes in a matter of seconds.

(And why isn't my VTRO registering?)
Disabled userscripts and I am still unable to VTRO.

@Mithical Works for me.

Q: Have Muggles ever credibly harmed or threatened to harm Wizards & Witches?

More generally, has Rowling indicated any ...

Q: Did J. R. R. Tolkien actually use to say that "Middle-earth was really the ancient history of the real planet Earth"?

Safal There was the also the fact that Tolkien, in later years, apparently gave up the conceit that Middle-earth was really the ancient history of the real planet Earth. This was said in a comment/answer on SE. I had never heard of this before. Is it true? Did he mean that Silmarillion is literall...

Q: Spaceship on Planet with No Government

Q: Baseship question

dean1957In the 1978 Battlestar Galactica series the main Cylon ship was always called a baseship. In what episode was it ever called a basestar in 1978? The basestar name was used in the 2004 series only that I can recall.

Q: Movie ID: I only remember one scene of 2 girls saving their dad

Q: a book forgotten from my elementary school days about shapeshifting

CeliaI probably read this young adult series (possibly a trilogy?) in 2015-ish. I don't remember much of the plot, but there was a girl who could shapeshift. I remember one scene when she transformed into a hyena but when she transformed back she was naked (because clothes go away when you shapeshift)...
